THE MOONS OF JUPITER – ANGEL

With a self-titled debut album in the works, THE MOONS OF JUPITER have offered curiosity plenty to get worked up over with the release of the Angel EP. It is the successor to their keenly welcomed first EP, Ghosts, and like that encounter offers some rich teasers for the forthcoming full-length.

THE MOONS OF JUPITER is a British electronic duo consisting of Nicky Rowe and James Harris. They weave a sound that embraces synth and electro pop from across the decades, with a certain nod to the eighties, and marry it to ambience cast contemplation. As Ghosts revealed it makes for an enthralling proposal that is as instinctively catchy as it is evocatively haunting. Angel follows in the same vein of virulence and atmospheric intimation and indeed in weaving a keen sense of captivation.

The Angel EP opens with its title track, the song rising like electronic mist around ears as electro percussion lands like glass splattering snowflakes. Swiftly, the warm yet anxiety-edged tones of Harris open up the heart of the track as Rowe’s synths cast their own romance-sharing rumination. As the EP itself, the song is a love affair yet has a sense of otherworldly and many possibilities in its vision with a plaintive hue in voice and breath.

It is an imagination-pulling start to the release that Sanctuary soon takes to another plateau of temptation. Darker shadows court its realm and the moodier edge to keys but within a melodic globe of light and synth scintillation with Rowe’s inventive instincts creating a kaleidoscope of surprise and enterprise.

Beautiful Life is next up and from its cinematically atmospheric beginnings weaves a beguiling and seductive romance for ears with Harris again a harmonic pull within. There is an essence of bands like Blancmange and OMD to the song at times but again enveloped in the individuality of THE MOONS OF JUPITER and like its predecessors made for a rewarding haunting of the senses and imagination.

The ambiance prowess of the pair is richly shared within next up Göbekli Tepe, the instrumental an evocative companion for emotions and an eager spark for the imagination. Like exploring a new world within oneself or before eyes, the track simply grew in presence and possibilities by the moment with every listen offering a new interpretation.

The EP is completed by a trio of alternative versions of its first three songs. 天使 is a Japanese sung version of Angel and followed by the Sanctuary (Metis Remix) and Beautiful Life (Callisto Version). All three bring another shade and adventure to the release and each firmly held ears as equally our growing appetite for the multi-faceted sound of THE MOONS OF JUPITER.

We have no date yet for the release of the band’s first album but rest assured with pleasures like the Angel EP the anticipation of a great many will be keenly waiting.
