Canyons and Locusts – Buck Dharma’s Eyes

Urging thought and contemplation, as well as instinctive attention, Buck Dharma’s Eyes is the latest single from noise pop duo CANYONS AND LOCUSTS. Turbulence and chaos firmly have their arms around the world right now so another evocative call on better intentions is an urging to embrace especially when it is as rousing and compelling as the pair’s new track.

Boston based CANYONS AND LOCUSTS is the creation of Justin Keane (vocals, guitar) and Amy Young (drums) whose creative history together goes back to 1999 in NYC where they formed the indie rock pop trio JUMPING BOMB GIRLS. After the band’s return to action in 2021, bassist Ellen Keffer had to back out of the adventure but in turn came the spark to a new noise-fueled turn in their songwriting and sound which led to the creation of CANYONS AND LOCUSTS.

The pair’s new track comes from their The Red Angel EP, its title a reference to the recently departed Boston rocker Justine Covault, front person for the popular JUSTINE AND THE UNCLEAN and founder of indie label RED ON RED RECORDS which had released the previous CANYONS AND LOCUSTS EP, Roll the Dice in 2022.

Produced by Keane and Ethan Dussault, Buck Dharma’s Eyes initially leads with a fuzzy melodic tempting but soon reveals its garage punk instincts as Keane’s distinctive tones share their emotive contemplation. Already that pop catchiness is fuelling the track’s swing though, a listener involving courting simply adding greater potency to its aligning sonic discord and emotive anxiety.

As a whole, Buck Dharma’s Eyes is a track bound in thick infectiousness, its contagion of noise and melodic fire cast with a similarly organic trespass of enterprise which we for one were very quickly enamoured with.
