Slipping through the Plastic Barricades

Just recently we had the fun of exploring Mechanics of Life, the new album from London alt indie trio Plastic Barricades, finding it a ‘collection of melody spun songs which entice with craft and warmth’. Offered the chance to get to the core of album and band we had the pleasure of quizzing Dan Kert, the Plastic Barricades vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist and one of the band’s founders, exploring the heart of their writing, sound, and album amongst many things…

Hi Dan, can you first introduce the band and give us some background to how it all started?

I had several different line-ups under Plastic Barricades moniker over the good part of the last decade, the current line up with Daniele Borgato on bass and Frazer James Webster on drums is active for 4 years. We’ve met through mutual friends at the ICMP (Institute of Contemporary Music Performance) in North-West London and dived straight into gigging and recording.

Have you been or are involved in other bands before? If so has how has that impacted on what you are doing now?

We’ve all played in different bands before, still mainly rock music. All those experiences definitely find their way into our current sounds, helping us to explore new territories.

What inspired the band name?

We’ve once built a fort out of plastic cups in the studio, the rest is history….

Was there any specific idea behind the forming of the band and also in what you wanted it and your sound to offer?

[The] Desperate need to write, record, and perform music. You cannot really do it on your own, unless you are called Ed.

Do the same things and desires still drive the band from when it was fresh-faced or have they evolved over time?

Pretty much…We are in a band because we always wanted to be in a band. But we’ve learned a lot of life lessons along the way and try to find fresh angles to approach certain things, like tour booking, recording or songwriting, for example.

Since those early days, how would you say your sound has evolved?

This is very hard for us to judge. But if you go to our website (http://www.plasticbarricades.eu/ ) you can hear everything we’ve ever released over the last 10 years, there is a lot of diversity in there.

Would you say your sound organically grows and evolves or moves more because the band deliberately goes out to try new things?

I would say it’s both. We all tend to get bored very quickly, so we do like to experiment. At the same time we are growing as musicians and people, so that reflects in the music for sure.

Presumably across the band there is a wide range of inspirations; are there any in particular which have impacted not only on the band’s music but your personal approach and ideas to creating?

Kurt Cobain and his sincerity definitely had a big impact on me personally and on PB as a band. But also the staggering emotional intent of The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, Razorlight, Coldplay, Muse, Biffy Clyro and others.

How does the songwriting process work within the band?

There are two main approaches…record the jam, then edit the bits we like and rework them into a song. This is how several songs on Mechanics of Life LP were conceived. But most of the time it is a chord progression and a vocal melody with lyrics. The song has a title and the meaning well before it is finished musically.

Where do you, more often than not, draw the inspirations to the lyrical side of your songs?

The world around us has so many inspiring and thought-provoking stories, that all you have to do is just let them in, absorb and breathe them into songs. But some songs of the Mechanics of Life album have been inspired by the genius of Hemingway, Orwell, Huxley, Murakami and others.

Could you give us some background to your new album?

Mechanics of Life, released digitally worldwide on the 14th of September, is a culmination of about 3 years of work in our backyard Shed Studio. It is a collection of 11 stories that take the listeners through the world we live in today, gently poke them and ask them to step up their game, go out and make a difference. Like our dear Dani (bass guitar) once said – “Humans didn’t come with a manual, so we came up with one“.

How about a closer insight to the themes behind it and its songs?

The album starts with the song we usually end our gigs with called How Goldfish Grow. It is based on a simple fact that if you take a goldfish and you find a big tank for it – it will grow BIG! The environment affects the size of the goldfish, the same way as our environment affect our own growth. There is a funny animated music video for this song on our YouTube channel. Then we sing about artificial intelligence helping humans get their s**** together (Singularity-2045), being able to reinvent yourselves again and again (Our Favourite Delusions), caring about the environment and throwing all the mindless consumerism away (Be the Change), looking back and overthinking it instead of moving forward (Around the Sun), searching for meaning (Needles in Haystacks), shining a light to show others the way (Shine!), finding the one intended for you (Half of your Soul), Big pharma conspiracy (Medicine Man) and mental illness (Voices). The last song of the LP – Masterminds – kind of summarises the whole experience, reminding everyone that they are the ones responsible for the things happening around them – and they can take back control!

Are you a band which goes into the studio with songs pretty much in their final state or prefer to develop them as you record?

We usually have basic parts in place (guitars, bass, drums, vocals) but we do add textures and layers on the go, depending on what the actual song needs. It is interesting how different the same song can sound live vs. recorded. We try to work with the recording, giving the song everything it deserves. Sometimes it is pretty hard to figure those things out, so this arrangement process can take months.

Tell us about the live side to the band, presumably a favourite aspect to the band?

We try to gig as much as we can, playing shows all around the country. I believe that any band needs to go through a lot of Level 1 gigs before they will be capable of playing bigger stages and appreciating the unique opportunities they are getting. It is like building a structurally solid house from the ground up – you can only start working on interior design when the rest is in place. Unlike so many other bands, each gig we tell stories, because we want our audience to think about certain things, then come home, go to sleep and wake up with this brilliant idea, maybe a purpose, maybe just a promise to oneself. Our gigs are less about drinking and jumping around and more about the inner dialogue.

It is not easy for any new band to make an impact regionally let alone nationally and further afield. How have you found it? Are there definitely the opportunities to make a mark if the drive is there for new bands?

I do believe that nothing worth doing in life is ever easy. Music needs to come from the heart. You also need people around you with big hearts and bright shining eyes. Then even if you are lost in the dark, they will illuminate the way. It is not easy at all – but it is still the best job in the world!

How has the internet and social media impacted on the band to date? Do you see it as something key to increasing success with those which fail to make it work are simply lacking the knowledge and desire to keep it working to their advantage or is it ultimately more of a curse?

Knowledge is key obviously. My friend was recently talking to me about SEO (Search engine optimization). For years I thought that is all about putting the right keywords to the right articles. It is so so so much more than that. Internet is a vice and a virtue, and it all depends on whether a band can accept that all that social media work is part of the deal. You can write brilliant songs and even record them nicely, but if you need to share them with the world – you have to work very hard for it.

Plastic Barricades – Mechanics of Life

Plastic Barricades is an alternative indie rock band from the UK which has just released their new album Mechanics of Life. It is a collection of melody spun songs which entice with craft and warmth whilst strolling through a landscape of emotions embracing the beauty of romance, hope, melancholy and more.  Musically its venture is just as welcoming of varied flavours as country, rock, and indie bred essences unite in ear pleasing enterprise.

London based, Plastic Barricades consists of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Dan Kert, bassist Daniele Borgato, and drummer Frazer Webster. Its beginnings though came in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia in 2007. Their well-received Tree of Ideas EP of 2012 was followed by Kert and original bassist, Jan Laan, relocating to the UK. A few additional members came and went before Laan left to be replaced by Italian Borgato in 2013. It was also a year which sadly saw the band’s Rome bred drummer Matteo Ippolito passed away bringing things to a standstill. In time a replacement was sought and found in Webster and the band pushed again to build on their already rising success. Numerous award nominations and successes have come with the increasing reputation of the outfit and a sound embracing the inspirations of artists such as Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay, Muse, Keane, Razorlight, and Nirvana. Mechanics of Life is their next step in luring attention and a tempting easy to see those with an appetite for gentle yet emotionally stirring massages of melody will find very palatable.

How Goldfish Grow gets things rolling, its eager stroll and boisterous jangle instantly catchy and tempting. The song continues to tease before relaxing to cradle Kert’s vocals, though soon its lively heart jumps to its feet again with each following cycle becoming increasingly infectious. Melodies shimmer across the darker tones of the bass whilst Kert’s sonic flames add to the track’s controlled but open drama. It is a great start well backed by the slightly sturdier body of Singularity 2045 though it too is woven from warm melodies and electrified tendrils across spirited rhythms. As with its predecessor feet are a willing involvement just as ears are to the imaginative air of the song which at times has a XTC like essence.

The summery caress of Our Favourite Delusions is next, its warm simmer welcoming blues lined flames throughout; heat which matches the lyrical punches before Be the Change entices with its own radiant charm and social nurtured melancholy. It is a song which comes alive when energy and intensity erupts in voice and sound but certainly more than satisfies from its first reflective touch with the enterprise of Kert’s guitar a potent spice in it all.

As the individual melodic weaves of Around the Sun and Needles in Haystacks intrigue and award ears with their proposals, Mechanics of Life keeps unwavering attention in its hands, the pair if without quite matching the persuasive levels of those before only pleasing that focus. It is a success Shine! builds upon with its sultry climate and melodic glaze over a understated but firmly catchy gait and personality while Half of Your Soul straight after features the bewitching sigh of female vocals alongside Kert which only adds to its fascination; a lure with also just a hint of country warmth in its infectiousness.

The album finishes off with firstly the highly enjoyable and bubbly rock ‘n’ roll of Medicine Man, a boisterous canter of sound and creative drama which is followed by the similarly engaging and tempting Voices. Together both tracks establish the pinnacle of the release, the second taking favourite song honours before leaving Masterminds to close things up with its catchy folkish sortie through ears wrapped in blues kissed guitar and melody smiling keys.

There are times when there is a wish Plastic Barricades were a touch bolder in their imaginative adventures and put more of a bite into their arousing eruptions but there is no denying that Mechanics of Life more than delivers on enjoyment and enterprise.

Matinée – Empty

With the melodic charms of debut album, These Days, still luring attention over a year later, backed by subsequent singles, the Italy hailing, London based Matinée are poised to unveil a new magnetic encounter posing as a single. Empty is a warm kiss on the senses, a melodic blush of elegance and catchy enterprise which equally is a rousing adventure hard to stop feet and enjoyment showing eager reactions to. The single in many ways echoes the creative exploits of that first album but at the same time pushes the invention and rich weave of flavours to new captivating heights.

Since emerging a handful of years back, Matinée has persistently impressed and fascinated a growing following of fans and attention. The success of their album has been matched and backed by a live presence which has drawn its own praise with the quartet sharing stages with the likes of Razorlight, Mystery Jets, Futureheads, The Wombats, Pete and the Pirates, British Sea Power and many more along the way. Empty sees the band linking up with Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Carl Barat, Glasvegas) again, the producer repeating his part of These Days, alongside Chris Geddes art_RingMasterReviewfrom Belle and Sebastian this time around.

Empty opens on a gentle rhythmic pulse and a charming drizzle of melodic rain, each synth cast drop a golden burst of warmth and enticement. The vocals of synth/guitarist Luigi Tiberio only adds to the attraction, his Italian accent bringing a touch of the Mediterranean and further infectiousness. Once the bolder, darker hues of Alfredo Ioannone’s bass and Alessio Palizzi’s lively beats join the affair on ears, the song is an enthralling blend of light and shadows amidst darker emotion and creative festivity.

Just as impressive in the song as the sounds offered, is the way sometimes the keys seem to lead the way, in other moments the guitar of Giuseppe Cantoli do or the vocals of Tiberio potently backed by those of Ioannone. The reality is that everything is equal yet the ebb and flow of the song, its rich crescendos provides a deceptive and very pleasing drama which consumes attention.

If you have yet to enjoy a Matinée performance, Empty is the perfect moment and adventure to spend your ticket on.

Token Joker – Just Part of the System

If you are looking for a tasty slab of rock ‘n’ roll to take around with you in the heat of summer this year, then lock in your mp3 players, grab the Just Part of the System EP from UK rockers Token Joker, and unite the two. The four track encounter is a magnetic and invigorating slice of sonic enterprise to while away the day with whilst revealing exactly why the Devon quintet is beginning to create a stir in the UK rock scene.

Not much more than a year since the band emerged, Token Joker has been on a determined course and potent rise reaching a first pinnacle with the forthcoming release of their debut EP. Before its creation though, the Dawlish hailing band has grabbed plenty of attention for the melody rich, hook loaded songs of lead vocalist Leon Welsh and rhythm guitarist/vocalist Matt Coleman. Within weeks of stepping from the shadows, the band found itself courted by a London promotion company which led to their playing the O2 Academy Islington. This was followed by shows with bands such as of The Tricks, The Others, and The Beaches as well as appearances at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, Teignmouth Carnival, and the Oxjam Exeter Takeover. It was a busy and successful 2014 for the band, global radio play another emerging success, and it has continued into this year. Recorded with producer Paul Reeve (Muse, Razorlight, Supergrass) this past March and mastered by Simon Heyworth (Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells), the eagerly anticipated Just Part of the System is now set to awaken a new spotlight on the band, a focus sure to be reinforced by the excellent song Ride the Train which is taken from the EP and firing up radio shows and stations through Token Joker linking up with renowned UK radio plugging company Pluggin’ Baby.

11096726_932257790127827_9070900460185589201_nThe EP opens with 10,000 Angels, a short atmospheric instrumental which sparks the imagination if not the ears to the same degree. It does lure in an attentive intrigue though, the piece like a dawning of bigger things, which turn out to be arriving in the shape of Green. The first track evolves seamlessly into its successor; tendrils of spicy coaxing from the guitar emerging from the previous sonic haze as thumping rhythms also add their invitation. That flavoursome enterprise turns into fiery grooves and hearty riffs from Chris Dearing and Matt Coleman respectively soon after, whilst the rhythmic side of the song gains greater weight and voice through the muscular swings of drummer Rupert Waldron and throaty basslines of Michael Jackson. It is an aggressive yet respectful enticing enhanced by the expressive vocals of Leon Welsh. Cross its length the song continues to endear itself to ears and thoughts, never quite exploding as it hints at, but feeding an awakening appetite to sparkling hooks and feisty textures.

Things kick up another gear with Rookie, a great busy stomp of dirt clad rock ‘n’ roll with an almost volatile character to its persuasion and a combative energy to its gait and persuasion. Within this formidable tempting, blues lined melodies colour the dramatic landscape, adding even more alluring hues to the gripping roar of the increasingly impressive song.

The EP is completed by the outstanding Ride the Train, a track swiftly taking ears and emotions on a feisty and heady course of provocative grooves and fiery melodies. Alongside this, hooks almost leap at ears as rhythms jab and flirt simultaneously with the senses whilst the voice of Welsh again creates an attention grabbing roar with range and diversity. An incendiary stomp to light up any mood, it is no wonder that the song alone is raising keen awareness upon the band and now supported by the rest of the EP, sure to be a leading lure across the year.

The band has already found the support of Matt Bellamy of Muse on their side, with many more soon to join the fold once Just Part of the System is unleashed on the nation. The bluesy, heat enriched summer of rock starts here.

Matinée – These Days

Taken from their acclaimed debut album, Matinée confirm themselves as one of the UK’s best emerging melodically magnetic propositions with new single These Days. Now it is the turn of their single to bring another wave of keen interest their way and from its opening moments These Days shows a potency to do just that. The opening tangle of guitar and synth bred melodies is an immediate inescapable invitation, especially once the warm tones of Tibeiro join the enchanting start. The song is soon showing bigger muscles though as a dark bassline colludes with punchy beats, their union an imposing yet respectful frame around the emerging weave of melodic revelry and harmonic temptation. It is a lively and invigorating mix, not explosive but a captivating festivity of voice and sound gripping feet and thoughts as easily as ears and emotions.

The song is pure rock pop for a summer day but similarly a warming romp for colder and darker moments. The perfect doorway into the arms of their album, though not the greatest moment on said release, which with the single’s impressive proposition will only excite newcomers, These Days is a heartily and thoroughly recommended encounter, album or single.

The Reverse – No, I Don’t Want to See Your Stupid F**king Band

Hailing from London, UK band The Reverse showed themselves quite handy at crafting strongly persuasive and magnetic songs with the release of their Kind Words For Cruel Times album around a year ago. Merging the drama of folk with indie inventiveness, the band’s sound is a gentle and welcoming tempting which does not startle but certainly entices keen attention. Now the band returns with new single, No, I Don’t Want to See Your Stupid F**king Band, providing more of the same charming enterprise which lit their full-length but with even greater colour and potency to its creative flame.

Formed by vocalist/guitarist Nathan Loughran and drummer Jason Moran, The Reverse was eventually completed by guitarist/backing vocalist Sam Hartley and after a previous bassist, James McKeown (ex-lead singer of The Great Divide and The Colours). A triplet of well-received EPs from debut A Clean Incision in 2006 through to Shutterspeed the following year, and in 2008 My Lifelong Psychological Experiment, reinforced the band’s emerging live reputation. It was the Graham Dominy (The Rifles, Razorlight, Ray Davies, Supergrass) recorded and mixed Kind Words For Cruel Times which opened up a broader attention, its success matched by shows with the likes of Klaxons, The Wave Pictures, Lupen Crook, Sgt Buzfuz, and Carina Round. The new single shows another engaging step forward for the quartet and you suspect with a similarly blossoming reaction.fucking_band_front

No, I Don’t Want to See Your Stupid F**king Band opens on a coaxing acoustic strum, the guitar casting a welcoming melody as Loughran begins the narrative bred from experiences and obstacles all emerging bands come up against. With lively yet controlled beats courting magnetic keys and harmonies, the song shuffles and tempts with a radiant weave of melodic prowess as bass and guitar lay down their own highly persuasive bait, the whole mix a gentle and unassuming song musically, compared to the lyrical altercation, but textured with refined and resourceful enterprise to spark the senses.

No, I Don’t Want to See Your Stupid F**king Band is a soothing seduction with a snapping title and lyrical premise, a song which reconfirms The Reverse as a band to keep good attention upon. It is not going to set your world on fire but the track is certainly going to give it a satisfying glow.

Matinée – These Days

A release radiating melodic smiles and mischievous energy from start to finish, These Days from UK indie rockers Matinée is one of those encounters which lingers and niggles away at the psyche in and away from its magnetic presence. The album tantalises and flirts with constant imagination and revelry so that whilst it does not exactly light a fire in the passions it is a persistent and refreshing incitement for ears and emotions. There has been an eagerly growing buzz around the East London quartet and the release of their debut full-length reveals exactly why.

Taking their name from the Franz Ferdinand song of the same name, Matinée has earned acclaim and support through their lively stage presence and vivacious sounds. The band has supported the Scottish band on shows in Italy, that leading Matinée to be invited to play numerous major venues in the country whilst receiving strong radio support. With the sharing of stages with the likes of Razorlight, Mystery Jets, Futureheads, The Wombats, Pete and the Pirates, British Sea Power amongst many also under their belts, the band is on a feisty rise, an ascent already reinforced by their singles starting with the acclaimed City Lifestyle. The Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Carl Barat, Glasvegas) produced These Days is the next potent slice of persuasion from the band, a festival of pop rock sure to awaken a broader and keener spotlight upon the foursome of Luigi Tiberio (vocals, synth, guitar), Alfredo Ioannone (vocals , bass), Giuseppe Cantoli (guitars), and Alessio Palizzi (drums).

Opener Bigger Picture instantly grips ears and imagination as an electro pulsing is swiftly joined by heavy resonating rhythms. It is a compelling entrance which only increases in potency as vocals bring their effect wrapped presence into an almost post punk temptation. Choppy riffs link up next as the song shifts into a synth pop/ electro rock stroll complete with imposing shadows and melodic provocation. There is also an eighties feel to the song which only adds to the evocative colour and air of the bewitching and inventively intriguing encounter.

The captivating start is followed by the mellower White Lies, keys bringing a gentle caress initially which is cored by a dark roaming bassline. Energy is raised as a catchy and harmonic chorus grasps ears, the vocals of Tiberio and cover170x170Ioannone an engaging blend which filters through into the surrounding crystalline sounds. The feistiness of the chorus leaves a spark from which the rest of the song also finds greater urgency in its presence, blooming into a controlled yet rampant charge of contagion before the album’s title track and recent single unveils its similarly infectious parade of enterprise. The track is a transfixing shuffle of elegant melodies and emotively expressive vocals within another pungent rhythmic frame, an easy addiction and thoroughly enthralling slice of creative revelry.

Both Said I and City Lifestyle keep attention and appetite bound, the first a smouldering coaxing with wiry grooves and hooks around the persistently heavy footed and thrilling bass lure from Ioannone giving greater depth to songs. There is a touch of Futureheads to the song, especially in its more agitated moments as a whispering eccentricity provides richer intrigue and sonic radiance. The song pulsates as does its successor with its flirty swagger and fleet footed shuffle. It is a treat of a persuasion, an insatiable dance of Arctic Monkey like musical and vocal hooks aligned to Editors bred melodic mischief, and one of the major pinnacles of the album.

     All The Good Fella’s is no slouch at exciting ears and feet either, its slower pace still a bubbling stroll as acidic melodies and spicy vocal harmonies play and tease over a punchy rhythmic stepping. The bass again brings the perfect contrast and compliment to the creative flames provided by Cantili and the warm keys of Tiberio. It is a template for all the songs yet not one sounds like another as proven again by Nobody Like Me and its sinew guided vibrant prowl through a raw and fiery sonic weave. The heaviest track on the album but still a virulent infection to ignite feet and emotions, the song provides another side to the character of the album and Matinée’s songwriting, even if maybe it lacks the spark of some if its predecessors.

New single Missing Pieces of a Jigsaw is next and straight away spreads a masterful cloak of contagion and melodic luster across the senses, sweeping the imagination and emotions up in its lively sunshine before passing them onto If You’re Gone. Featuring Mike Cook and Chris Geddes, past and present of Belle and Sebastian, the track is a thick and enthralling ball of impassioned melodies and expression enriched by the brass flames of Cook and rampant keys of Geddes.

The album comes to a close with 40 Years Old, a sultry and slow burning song which fails to excite as most of its companions on the album but still ensures the album leaves on a potent tempting.

From a strong first impression These Days just gets bigger and stronger with time, as mentioned never setting a fire but inducing a romance in thoughts and emotions through its presence and sound which most bands can only dream of. Matinée is heading towards very healthy and exciting horizons if the potential and majesty of their first album is anything to go by.
