Syztem 7 – Evolving

Though new album Evolving is the first time we have come across US rockers Syztem 7, it is a proposition which immediately felt like an old friend back to eagerly stir things up. That is because the Seattle hailing outfit openly aligns familiar rock, industrial, and metal textures to their own just as bold imagination. It is the distinctiveness of the latter though which fuels and drives their rousing sound and makes their new album one highly enjoyable encounter.

The multi-flavouring adventure of their industrial rock sound has allowed Syztem 7 to share stages with and find support amongst the fans of bands as varied as Zakk Wylde, The Genitorturers, One-Eyed Doll, Thrill Kill Kult, Lords of Acid, King’s X, The Dreaming, and many others. It now provides a gripping incitement within Evolving which needed mere seconds to ignite attention and appetite as album opener No Regrets erupts to kick things off.

An initial lure of guitar makes for a potent coaxing, one swiftly ignited as the rolling rhythms of drummer Ed Rhoads add their ear grabbing bait to the great dirty grumble escaping Nathan Raynes’ bass. With keys keenly bursting into the already rousing mix, the track had us swiftly bouncing before relaxing into an infectious stroll alongside the enticing tones of vocalist Jason Ames. Rhythms continue to pick their spot with military precision, accelerating their strikes as the track’s anthemic chorus erupts upon the increasingly intense sonic hookery of guitarists Jaymz Kennedy and Shane Scot. Like a blend of Gravity Kills, Powerman 5000, and Rammstein, it is a gripping and highly manipulative start to the album and a persuasion only matched and twisted to greater temptation thereon in.

This Disguise is next up, the song laying down an electronic misting from which sonic tendrils wrap the imagination and a thick fusion of rock and metal spirals. As with the first, a certain familiarity in its voice and moves only entraps eager participation while fresh enterprise and individual imagination breeds the overall uniqueness which fuels the Syztem 7 sound. It swiftly had body and ears engaged passing them over to the just as easily persuasive Eternita Divina. Emerging as one of if not our favourite moment within Evolving, the song has a great touch of Breed 77 to its cosmopolitan web of melody and rhythmic animation, it all making the passage under our skin fluid and swift.

Proving just as captivating, Forgive and Forgets raises its anthemic hand upon the equally magnetic croon of Ames, the song with a Mudvayne meets Stabbing Westward air swiftly irresistible while The Worst sizzles on the senses straight after to match the virulence and captivation previously on offer. From guitars to rhythms, vocals to electronics, the track is a rapacious dance of varied rock enterprise designed to and succeeding in enticing full participation from its willing victims.

The following Skintag captures a 16 Volt/Celldweller hued temptation to its breath-taking enticement, the song another with a firm grip on best album moment as it nags eager and complete involvement in its arousing endeavours. Unsurprisingly it cast a web of tantalising flavours lined with varied and recognisable yet freshly individual threads in its energetic and inspiring weave and no shock, it too had us hook, line, and sinker.

Evolving closes out with firstly the physically intoxicating Godsend and finally the spiralling tempest of its title track. The first of the pair stalks the senses as it seduces ears with its melodic yet more carnal traits; its electronic elements inciting the bite of its rock and metal nurtured essences whilst equally breeding richer harmonic tempting in sound and vocals. Its successor aligns sonic turbulence and emotional intimacy with melodic intimation and ravening electronic contagion resulting in a final slice of inimitable Syztem 7 enterprise and audacity.

With every second, from its first lungful of sound to last, hitting the spot, Evolving easily rose as one of the year’s most arousing moments and Syztem 7 a band we can only anticipate much bigger attention rising up for.

Ensnaring The Snarl: Dirty ol’ Crow Interview

Hi and thank you for sparing time to chat with us.

Filippo Monticelli (guitar): no problemo, thanks for having us.

Could you first introduce the band and tell us how it came to be?

We are a five piece hard rock band; we have Liud Carter on drums, Dom on bass, Michi and me on guitars and Vikki Totten on lead vocals. We formed in spring 2017 in London and we released our debut EP early this year.

How would you define not only your sound but the creative character of the band?

Raspy and direct. However, we do work quite a while on each song, until we are all pretty much happy on every part and on the overall feel and sound.

Are there any previous musical experiences for band members and how have they been embraced in what you do now?

Most of us where in various bands prior to this one. All the experience accumulated through the years now is at the service of Dirty ol’ Crow

Is there a particular process to the band’s songwriting?

Most of the times some of us would present a complete or nearly finished song idea, after which we try to find the right arrangement for all the instruments and the right melodies for the vocals. Other times however songs were born just out of jam sessions in the rehearsal room… either way we try to take our time to refine every aspect of the song before we play it live.

Would you tell us about your latest release?

Our latest release is also our first. It’s a six song EP basically containing all our originals until that point. It’s raw and fast-paced, and it quite well reflects the identity of the band during our first year and a half together. The name “Strangers’ Nest” came from the realization that we all were a bunch of strangers to pretty much each other, and then we got together in the same band and also in the same house for a while.

What are the major inspirations to its heart and themes?

Musically, the inspirations are surely our influences, and how they shape our musicality. Lyrically, the themes revolve around life experiences and struggles, but the “have a good time” theme is also very prominent.

I am always intrigued as to how artists choose track order on albums and EP’s and whether in hindsight they would change that. What has been the deciding factor for you or do songs or the main do that organically?

Yeah, the track order on the EP has been topic of discussion, if you know what I mean. First we were thinking of copying the order of our live sets. However, we realized that it wasn’t necessarily the best option. We decided to open the EP with what was our newest song at the time (which live was usually towards the end of the set) as we recognized it had a great opening riff, catchy and driving. This was “Mistress of Sin”. Funny enough, our live set opener (“Johnny Boy”) became the second last song in our EP. The main idea was to start the EP powerful and catchy, keep it groovy with the second song (“Old Man’s Hatchet), go into the single/sing-along with “Sex Dictator”, then slow down the pace a tiny bit with the bluesy vibes of “Dirt Stained” and finishing off with two in-your-face tracks (“Johnny Boy” and “Queen of Rats”). In the end I think that’s a pretty effective track order.

What do you find the most enjoyable part of being in a band and similarly the most cathartic?

Well for me is just being able to create new music and play it live to people. It’s always a thrill. Especially when you have a good day, the sound is great and you really get “in the zone”, it’s just an amazing feeling. Doesn’t matter if it’s in rehearsal or live when you really get those notes just right together with your band mates, it feels so good.

For anyone contemplating checking you out live give some teasers as to what they can expect.

Expect energy! You can never quite tell what’s gonna happen as things tend to get unpredictable at times, our singer might decide to half-strip, I might jump in the audience, you never know… But you can expect an energy-charged show.

What has been your most thrilling moment on stage to date?

Oh that’s a tough one. Sometimes it’s just thrilling to play a brand new song you know… But I can say that when we played our biggest stage yet (The Dome, in London UK) that was pretty thrilling. But the same when we played a smaller venue for our EP launch party: the place was so packed and the audience responded so good to our music; that was a thrilling experience too. I guess the next step I’m looking forward too is playing an outdoor festival stage!

What else can we expect in the near future?

We have a few gigs before the year is over (you can stay up to date by following us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/dirtyolcrow/ ), after which we will focus on finishing off the demos for our first full length album and getting into a studio to record them properly. We plan to release to album at some point next year. Also we are planning to do some dates abroad next year; Germany and Italy are definitely on the radar.

What are the major inspirations to you sound wise and as a musician?

Personally speaking, my strongest guitar influences are probably Slash and Zakk Wylde. However I find inspiration in many different styles, such as blues, country, flamenco, folk music (just to mention a few).

And finally what song or release would you say was the spark to your passion for music?

Well, for me it all kinda started with Michael Jackson, I would say the albums “Bad” and “Dangerous” really hit me deep.

Beauty In Chaos – Beauty Re-Envisioned

With their debut album, Finding Beauty in Chaos, an acclaimed release last year, Beauty In Chaos has returned to its contagious adventure for their second full-length, Beauty Re-Envisioned. Revisiting those earlier tracks though does not mean that the new release is simply an easy echo of songs which have already enticed keen attention, indeed what we found was a whole fresh exploration based around a mix of dramatic remixes, bold new visions and alternative versions of those original encounters.

Beauty in Chaos is a LA-based collective led/curated by guitarist Michael Ciravolo (Human Drama/ Michael Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel) featuring a host of renowned luminaries and unsurprisingly Beauty Re-Envisioned is littered with them. For the album Ciravolo admitted “I basically handed the keys to the car over to an amazingly talented cast of producers, engineers, re-mixers, DJs and artists… giving them near total autonomy to throw the puzzle of ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’ on the floor and reassemble it as they hear it.” What has emerged is a proposition in its own right aside of that first offering, one bringing new bold characters and potency to songs which over past months had already become good friends.

 Beauty Re-Envisioned opens with a snarling MGT Remix of the Beauty In Chaos take on the T-Rex classic, 20th Century Boy. With Al Jourgensen’s rapacious tones enticingly scowling across its infectious electronic bounce and harmonica scorched canter, the track reveals itself  as virulent as it is feral and proving an immediate impossible to refuse invitation into the album which swiftly further rewards with the glorious embrace of Man of Faith. The Preacher Man Mix again has the ever potent tones of the Mission’s Wayne Hussey, one of our all-time favourite vocalists, and The Cure bassist Simon Gallup at its heart, the track a quickly addictive slice of shadow wrapped melodic rock as seductive as it is voraciously rousing.

Canadian duo Ummagma add their creative touch to Look Up next, the band’s instinctive atmospheric craft and radiance soaking the inescapably absorbing song around the temptation of vocalist Tish Ciravolo while the Collide Mix of Un-Natural Disaster springs even stronger alternative /industrial metal ferocity and intensity into the dUg Pinnick, Zakk Wylde and Ice-T embracing track. Both songs had us fully and greedily hooked as too the acoustic version of Storm with Ashton Nyte at its vocal helm. Written by The Awakening frontman and Michael Ciravolo, the song finds a new earthier intimacy and emotive depth without losing a sense of the catchy virulence in the original’s veins.

The alluring beauty of I Will Follow You featuring Evi Vine and the mutually fascinating draw of the Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) and Michael Anthony (Van Halen) contained Drifting Away in their respective Cotton Socks and High Water mixes only entangled pleasure and imagination, each making a less striking impact initially but only more hungrily consumed by the listen while the Kitty Lectro Mix of Man of Faith offered up a more eighties post punk/electro pop energy and enterprise to the already devoured encounter with similar force of appetite involved.

The enjoyment of Mr Hussey’s voice did not stop there as immediately his tones infused power and emotion to The Long Goodbye (Au Revoir), the track not exactly stripped back to its core but certainly exposing its melancholic heart with greater clarity as emotive piano, evocative strings, and sonic intimation wrapped intense vocals.

I Will Follow You returns with its IVaD Mix as in turn does Storm via the Vampyre Mix, again offerings which left pleasure full before another slice of 20th Century Boy sees Rolan Bolan and Wayne Hussey united in a great southern kissed, glam nurtured funk ‘n’ roll arousing which just had us bouncing.

Beauty Re-Envisioned is completed by the crepuscular Eclipse Mix of I Will Follow You and the compelling Fall & Sway Mix of the Ashton Nyte featuring Finding Beauty in Chaos, another two tracks which had little difficulty entrapping ears and enjoyment.

We will admit we are not naturally drawn to remixes and especially releases based on such collections but such the quality of the songwriting behind the tracks here and the rich imagination in their evolutions Beauty In Chaos have again simply enslaved.

Hollywood Heads – Self Titled EP

Sauntering out of Moscow, Hollywood Heads is a band with a swagger to their presence and lustful intention to their heavy metal exploit. Formed in 2011, the quartet has powerfully awoken the eager attention of their local underground scene but now with the help of their self-titled debut EP, the band is ready to break out into a wider spotlight. Inspired by the likes of Aerosmith, Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, and Zakk Wylde, their sound is not one bursting with startling originality but it offers boisterous and dirty rock ‘n’ roll which easily lights ears and appetite.

Line-ups changes, as with many bands, has been part of Hollywood Head’s emergence but the EP finds the band at its strongest yet with founding members in bassist Yeti and drummer Dan Mark alongside vocalist Gine King and guitarist Cross_Cover_Hollywood_HeadsFox. The successor to the well-received single Blood City, the EP rocks without any thought of respect or restraint from its first rousing track, the feisty Hollywood Heads. It does not make the most dramatic start but with riffs stirring up air and rhythms prowling with predacious intent, the song makes a strong enough invitation before exploding into a fiery slab of rowdy rock ‘n’ roll with glam rock urges. The slightly wayward tendencies of vocals only add to the energy and excitement brewed in the track whilst guitars unveil a potent craft of sonic endeavour to add fuel to the fire. There are no surprises with the song but plenty to get feet and ears rigorously engaged.

The following Aerogrill is the same, not making shocking statements but igniting body and thoughts with its excellent punkish twang and feverish vivacity around more of those addictive unique vocals. The best track on the release it shows a riveting twist of adventure to the band’s sound. Hooks seduce and grooves bind the senses whilst the virulent stroll of the song takes a hold of the passions. It is not ground-breaking but wholly addictive as it awakens a greedy hunger for the band’s creative brawl.

The EP comes to a close with Game, a proposition showing yet another side to the band’s invention. It is the heaviest track on the release; riffs prowling with weighty enticement as rhythms crisply spear their intensity as vocals roar with lusty relish across their canvas. Lit with an additional blues hue, the song is an accomplished and magnetic close to a fine release.

Hollywood Heads are at the start of a potentially dramatic ascent and success. They have still to evolve their own distinct voice but the EP makes a highly satisfying and pleasing base to start from.

Godsized – Time

Godsized

    Time, the self–released debut album from UK rockers Godsized, quite simply slams the senses from pillar to post with massively chunky riffs and tight enslaving rhythms. It is a heavy handed storm of satisfaction veined with sonic enterprise and classic rock energy which admittedly does not rewrite the pages of rock music but does add an invigorating chapter.

Since its formation in 2009, the band has built an impressive reputation for their high octane sound and live performances with shows alongside bands such as Life of Agony and My Ruin included, as well as two extremely well received EPs, especially Brothers in Arms. That EP secured the London quartet the main support slot for Black Label Society on their 2011 tour, Zakk Wylde hearing and loving the release. Acclaimed appearances at festivals such as Bloodstock, Hammerfest, Bulldog Bash, Download Festival, and numerous other festivals across Europe have done their standing no harm either, the strength of all over the past years making the anticipation for their first full length release more than merely eager.

With a strong breath of southern rock riding their intense riffs and melodic tones, the band in Time has created an album which Time_Coverimmediately lights up the senses before working on the passions. Opener Soul Taker instantly makes its entrance upon a fire of inviting riffs and punchy rhythms before reinforcing it with further rhythmic sinews and muscular riffing. The vocals of Glen Korner are an easy persuasion upon the ear, his rich expressive swagger holding a snarl and equally potent cleanly delivered persuasion, whilst the guitar craft of he and Neil Fish chew and entrance the ear with sheer accomplishment and inventive intensity. The band has had comparisons to the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Black Label Society, Clutch, and Alter Bridge, and this track instantly tells why. Admittedly it and subsequent tracks are not pushing existing boundaries but deeply satisfying riots of sound and pleasure they certainly are.

The following Through to You and latest single Heavy Load continue the strong start though for personal tastes their predecessor holds sway, both songs again soaked in addictive riffs whilst the bass of Gavin Kerrigan finds a growl, especially in the first of the pair, which sends tingles and intimidation ripping across the senses. A less intensive encounter but still bringing a towering stance to its pressing, the song is a flame of melodic strength and aggressive insistence whilst its successor is a cliff face of treacherous beats from drummer Dan Kavanagh, the attack restrained and controlled but with an edge which threatens to break out as upon other tracks. As mentioned it is the lead single from the release and it is easy to understand why the choice with the impressive sonic display within its heart but again it has a slightly less irresistible impact compared to the first song which would have been our choice.

As the likes of It’s a Hanging, a great track with a grunge lilt to its rock stance placing the song in the territory of Alice In Chains as much as say a Down area of sound, the stunning Mother, and the excellent Final Act, bring their varied and captivating presences the album continues to light the fuse to greater passion for itself. The second of the trio of songs is a continually shifting and unpredictable triumph; its slow stroll with rises of adrenaline powered enterprise is wholly magnetic with the guitars and vocals bewitching the ear upon the hungry prowl of the bass and punchy rhythms. It is also a song which slowly burns greater passion for its glory across each and every encounter, it is easily the most imaginative and impossible to predict track on Time. The latter of the three like the opener is a contagious brute of riveting riffing and melodic seduction, a song which plays with and recruits the listener into an infectious stomp of thoughtful yet unchained passion soaked rock n roll.

Around and between these songs the likes of No Reprieve with its heaving chest of muscular creative energy, the carnivorous Perfect Moment with its predatory intensity, and the equally intensive track The Bounty Hunter, inspire further submission to the cause. The songs fluctuate in their heights with none quite slapping the plateaus of the previously mentioned tracks, but neither do any leave anything but a pleasing lingering taste of expertise and rampant pleasure.

Ending on another forceful highlight in the cantankerous shape of Still Waiting, the album is a thoroughly satisfying brawl of rock n roll. The nagging thought that Godsized are on the brink of major things is rife upon Time and even if the album is not the trigger it is only a horizon away one suspects.

The Unripes: This Is Not America

    This Is Not America is an album which wraps hard rock, punk, and sleaze up into a pleasing ball of energetic rock n roll which easily captures the imagination, a release which knows what it is good at and presents those elements with a confidence and swagger which is quite magnetic. Released by Italian rockers The Unripes, the Street Symphonies Records released album has all you wish for in a rock album brought with style and accomplished craft.

Formed in 2005, the Modena based band made strong impressions locally early on and though The Unripes went through line-ups changes as a young band has continued to evolve into an impressive and accomplished band. The quartet of original members vocalist AxiA and guitarist Mike Pelillo alongside new members bassist Uncle Sappa (Midnite Sun and Sutuana), and drummer Sevens (a.k.a. Luke Setti of Trick Or Treat), have delivered a debut album which is bursting with hungry rhythms, assertive riffs, and infectious melodies and hooks which light up the ear.

Opener Track No. 1 is the immediate proof as it instantly engages on its appearance through an electronic breath and shadowed theunripes-thisisnotamerica-covervocals which pull one into the following storm of energy and passion. Into its full stride the song is a thumping stomp of fiery riffs and vociferous vocals over firm beats from Sevens. Its chorus is as anthemic and catchy as you could ask for and the bass of Uncle Sappa a growling beast which is impossible not to be fully enamoured with. It is a straight forward song but like the album knows how to make the strongest persuasion and give a comprehensive pleasure.

Next up Reload is the biggest highlight on the album, an impossible to refuse contagious lure to voice and limbs to join its aggressive and energy driven feast of sound and passion. The lead track from the album which also was chosen as the official soundtrack to the 2012 main event of Italian wrestling company IWC, the song is a fiery charge of rampant riffs and sonic flames upon firmly jabbing rhythms and a real muscular treat to party with.

Arguably the strength of the song ensures that the following songs like Get On This Rollercoaster and You Are The One fail to reach its heady heights but to dismiss them or any song on the album would be irresponsible as all are potent and highly agreeable slabs of rock n roll. The first of this pair is a feast of sturdy riffs and raptorial basslines behind strong vocal harmonies and inspiring melodic craft whilst the second is a power ballad which shows an emotive depth and diversity to band and the fine vocals of AxiA. Again the cantankerous bass sound steals the show but every aspect of the song is highly satisfying.

Throughout the album there are loud whispers of bands such as Motley Crue, Steel Panther, Black Stone Cherry, Zakk Wylde, and more and if there is any real negative about the album it is a lack of a distinct and unique voice to the obvious creative craft and invention of the band, not that it makes the enjoyment of the album suffer. With further highlights coming with songs like the voracious My Muse Is Called Rock’n’Roll, the sinewy  Damned Electric with its open heart and enterprise, and the irresistible Scream If You Wanna Go Faster, easily one of the favourites on the album, This Is Not America hits the right spot from start to finish.

The Italians are a band on the move and their debut album the perfect way to join their ascending rise. The release offers honest prime rock n roll for the masses courtesy of a band you will hear more of, The Unripes.
