British neo-psych rockers Bernaccia has perpetually caught ears and expectations by surprise with their insistently magnetic fusion of psychedelic mystery and desert blues atmospherics driven by tribalistic rhythms. Indeed across EPs and singles, the Newcastle band has grown into one of the UK’s most compelling propositions, beguiling and seducing with their dark and often cinematic rock ‘n’ roll. New single Awake though has arguably provided the biggest and admittedly most flavoursome twist yet with the ear catching addition of vocalist Ellen Chetcuti to the band’s ranks.

From their 2014 released Cinema EP, the foursome of vocalist/guitarist Jonny Noble, synthist Stew Falkous, bassist Kieran Healy, and drummer Chris Cox has persistently and increasingly lured attention and acclaim with their fascinating darkly lit psych/melodic rock explorations. Equally their live presence has only reinforced the potency of their emergence as shows with the likes of Royal Blood, Lola Colt, Alabama 3, The Fall, Twisted Wheel, CUD, and Wolf People have come and successfully passed alongside the release of impressive proposals like the heftily acclaimed Light//-//Dark EP and last single Power To The Hills. The well-received track was the band’s most intense and dark tapestry of sound and imagination yet and now more than matched by the brighter lit but just as rousing and immersive Awake.

Keys caress ears initially as a percussive shuffle dances with the imagination. Swiftly the unexpected and quickly embraced voice of Chetcuti slips in. Listening to a release before doing research, especially in regard to a band already well known, can often catch expectations out, and here the presence of the band’s newest member certainly provided a rewarding surprise. In no time, Noble’s familiar dark tones step forwards alongside Chetcuti’s, synths rising with suggestive and exotic flames around their alternating and merging persuasions as ears and thoughts are quickly entangled in the song’s thick and shadowed drama. Drenched in similarly immersive atmospheric smog, the track reveals great blues and at times eighties new wave enterprise, playing like a mix of My Baby, Jingo, and King Trigger whilst emerging as another unique Bernaccia adventure.

Increasingly anthemic and spirit rousing with each one of its inciting minutes, Awake is a new step in the gripping rise of Bernaccia. Why the band’s dark and often sinister romances of body and imagination have not made then a name on the lips of multitudes it is hard to understand but maybe Awake will be the spark to tempt the broadest spotlights that the band deserves.

For their darkest exploration yet, Newcastle neo-psych rockers Bernaccia release new single Power To The Hills which again confirms them as one of the most fascinating and exciting incitements on the British rock scene. Bred from the band’s now renowned fusion of psychedelic mystery, tribal rhythms, and desert blues beauty, the new song transports ears and imagination into the shadowed world of sinister atmospheric romances and sultrily surreal drama, a rich, dark adventure to immerse in.

Since the release of their Cinema EP in 2014, the quartet of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jonny Noble, lead guitarist Stew Falkous, bassist Kieran Healy, and drummer Chris Cox has bewitched attention with their warmly intrusive and hazily lingering sound. To be fair even before that they were enticing loyal fans and strong awareness their way through a potent live presence around the Northeast and further afield. Forming in 2010, the band over time has shared stages with the likes of Royal Blood, Twisted Wheel, and Wolf People whilst this year alone they have opened for Lola Colt, Alabama 3, and The Fall as well as play Tramlines 2015. Musically that period has also seen their sound become darker and more diversely involved; kaleidoscopic in flavour as the acclaimed Light//-//Dark EP, also of 2014, revealed. Confirmation comes again within Power To The Hills, arguably the most intense and dark tapestry from the band yet.

The song swiftly has ears lined-up before a rhythmic enticing which quickly works on the body too as keys gently but imposingly swarm the senses with a suggestive ambience and haunting melodic spicing. Pretty soon these elements align with a bordering on shamanic rhythmic stroll and an even sultrier mesh of spicy guitar tenacity and keys spawned dark seducing. Over these the recognisable tones of Noble spill drama and shadowed lined expression, his presence like a narrator to the theatre of words and the increasingly fiery and tenacious sounds.

There is an essence of the darkest delta blues tones to the song, an acidic almost dangerous lining to the inflamed psychedelic hues and the increasingly addictive lure of the frenetic rhythms. The track is superb, perpetually eventful and unpredictable leaving the listener on an aural cliff hanger with its sudden halt.

Bernaccia continue to bewitch with their musical hex simultaneously growing in deserved stature and acclaim. The first single from the band’s debut album (Growl, Peace, Belief its working title), Power To The Hills confirms that not only this year has been a big and important time for the band but that 2016 will be the year of Bernaccia.

Power To The Hills will be self-released on September 26th.

The Sherlocks – Escapade

Bursting with bulging rhythms and just as rigorously captivating sonic invention, new single Escapade reveals exactly what Sheffield has been shouting about for quite a while; that The Sherlocks is one rather exciting band.

The UK rockers is bred from family and friendship, emerging in 2010 after brothers Josh and Andy Davidson, guitar and bass respectively, moved in next to the grandparents of vocalist/guitarist Kiaran Crook and his drummer brother Brandon. The quartet were soon bonding over football and music, uniting over favourite artists such as Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Libertines, Oasis, and The Jam. This led to jamming sessions where they discovered, explored, and honed their sound, and subsequently gave birth to The Sherlocks. Since then the quartet has played over 500 gigs, sharing stages with the likes of The Enemy, Simple Minds, Scouting For Girls, Reverend and The Makers, The Buzzcocks, Twisted Wheel, Tom Hingley, and Steve Cradock thesherlocksescapadeartworkalong the way, and in 2013 released debut EP First Bite Of The Apple.

The well-received EP, as their following top 100 single Live For The Moment, set down a marker in sound and adventure which Escapade now runs with in fine anthemic style. From the first spicy breath of guitar, the song has ears and emotions leaping to attention, especially once potently jabbing beats and a flush of riffs add to the initial coaxing. The lure of the song then just gets stronger and more virulent as a gripping hook emerges from the start and swiftly binds imagination and emotions in its wine of a temptation. The strong vocals also add appealing expression and energy to the song, never imposing but just helping increase the catchiness of the track.

A great throaty bassline flirts across the song too, but it is the overall contagion of the encounter and its inventive dance which most enthrals and has feet and voice seriously involved in the creative commotion. Ground-breaking the song is not but certainly it is invigorating revelry of the irresistible kind and a reason alone to keep The Sherlocks under a tight spotlight.

Bernaccia – Light//-//Dark

Having gripped the imagination and transfixed ears with their Cinema EP earlier this year, UK rock band Bernaccia rigorously enslave both again with new encounter, the Light//-//Dark EP. Consisting of four tracks which immerse the listener in hazy and invigorating fusions of blues and folk rock with a rugged rock ‘n’ roll tenacity, the band’s latest release not only reinforces all the impressive things discovered in the band previously but opens up new tantalising depths to their invention and attention grabbing enterprise.

Formed in 2010, the Gateshead quartet of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jonny Noble, lead guitarist Stew Falkous, drummer Chris Cox, and bassist Kieran Healy took little time in garnering a potent local spotlight and fan base though their live performances, which has seen them play with the likes of Royal Blood, Twisted Wheel, and Wolf People over time, and first single The Keeper. Its appetite raising presence was emulated by its successor No Club but it has been the Cinema EP which ignited a nationwide spotlight, a success which Light//-//Dark can only spark to a new level.

Opener Street Life warms up ears with a suggestive glaze of keys but it is once the pulsating bassline colludes with spicy blues kissed guitar endeavour that thoughts and appetite are really stoked into attention. The rhythmic slavery which gripped on the last EP is instant potent bait again on the first track, Cox’s jabs and prods luring instinctive submission as Noble’s expressive vocals align with sultry melodies to craft a provocative colour to it all. Aided by similarly vibrant hues of keys, psychedelic atmospherics flirt with the senses, The Doors inescapable references to what otherwise is a distinctly unique presence. Flames of harmonica only add to the enthralling and anthemic start to the release, an immediate peak matched by its successor.

Darkness Walks groans throatily initially before sonic enterprise emerges to intrigue and guide the imagination into the tempestuous shadows and heavy emotion of is broadening persuasion. A hollow effect on the vocals add to the light darkcavernous yet thick texture and breath of the smouldering intensity building within the track. There are similarities to fellow Geordie blues rockers Kobadelta in the song, the exploration of rich shadows and imposing drama an immersive incitement which with the sizzling sonic roar around them only engrosses and thrills.

Third song Manifest is the first of two featuring Ellen Chetcuti, though it is a gentle caress of keys and a vocal whistle which makes initial contact before a feisty stroll of riffs and great badgering rhythms ignites a hungry response in thoughts and emotions. It is not long before the seductive tones of Chetcuti join those of Noble, their union as potent as the relentless monosyllabic rhythmic dance and equally single-minded but delicious riffs and hooks. The track is scintillating, especially when a jazzy breeze of invention and sonic humidity plays with the imagination.

The EP closes with the blues croon of Blue Man, vocal harmonies straight away bringing a dramatic temptation which the atmospheric expansion of the song accentuates through a triple vocal seduction. Chetcuti is the perfect foil and incitement to the darker tones of Noble and band, whilst the slim but grippingly expressive melodic enterprise, as every note and syllable comes in a melancholic wrap; its blues lament a rich balm on emotions and fire for the passions.

Bernaccia undoubtedly impressed with Cinema but Light//-//Dark opens up an even stronger ‘lustful’ reaction with its growth from the last encounter, employing all that made its predecessor a focus grabbing offering and infusing them in an even more incendiary proposition of ears, emotions, and attention. Bernaccia are going to have an important say in the direction of British rock if they carry on like this.

Mary Joanna & The Southern Electrikk – Wasted

Sinisterly seductive, Wasted is one of those songs which gets under the skin and leaves an inescapable temptation to persistently tease thoughts and emotions. The track is the debut single from UK band Mary Joanna & The Southern Electrikk, and easy to suggest possibly the beginning of a big affair between artist and British hearts.

Hailing from Manchester, Mary Joanna & The Southern Electrikk is fronted by actress and chanteuse Mary Joanna Coogan. Behind her comes a wealth of experience and talent provided by guitarists Zack Davies and Stephen Evans (Twisted Wheel), bassist Steven Tatji (Paris Angels, Rude Club), drummer Spencer Birtwhistle (Interstella, The Fall), and Rikki Turner (Paris Angels) on keys. Together they cast a weave of sound which binds essences of post punk, shoegaze, psychedelia, and electronic ingenuity into something which is as unique as it is warmly familiar. As evidenced by the single, it is a heady mix from the band and with the siren-esque tones of Coogan quite irresistible.MJ&TSE WASTED COVER ART

From a virulently coaxing of tempting beats from Birtwhistle, the song soon casts a shadowed emotion over its entrance through a riveting bass tone and the vocal croon of Coogan. Radiant shards of guitar ignite the developing landscape whilst a darker breath of keys only adds to the sultry climate of the encounter. It is a compelling adventure which is as hauntingly mesmeric as it is virulently infectious, the hypnotic rhythms and expressive sounds creating a flavoursome canvas for the stunning voice of Coogan to colour and soak in tantalising expression.

Backed by the similarly engaging You Knew You Knew, the single is a stunning entrance by the band. The second song drifts in on a warm breeze of a melody courted by a shadow kissed bassline. It is another irresistible enticement which expels further mesmeric heat with the gentle but full temptation of Coogan’s voice and harmonies. Binding ears and imagination in a persistent echo like persuasion of guitar and keys enterprise, the track smoulders with suggestive elegance, its sonic fascination not quite matching Wasted but certainly give it a thrilling run for its money.

One release is never really enough to suggest greatness ahead but Wasted definitely has thoughts and passions veering in that direction…outstanding stuff.

Bernaccia – Cinema EP

    Triggering that gut instinct that you are witnessing the birth of something special, the Cinema EP from UK neo-psychedelic blues rockers Bernaccia is one of those magnificent surprises which has you catching your breath in excitement. Hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, the band has already reaped an eager attention with a pair of previously released songs. As good as they certainly were though, there is something extra and exceptional about this new release in presence and quality. Bernaccia casts a fusion of blues, folk, and rock which is deliriously captivating; a riveting sculpting of atmospheres, rhythmic slavery, and melodic seduction which is simultaneously expansive and intimate, and simply irresistible.

     The quartet of Jonny Noble, Stew Falkous, Chris Cox, and Kieran Healy drew great critical responses and success last year with the release of the track The Keeper, a song followed and equalled in strength and success by No Club. The second track pushed the band into a greater spotlight, helping pave the way for the band to support slots bands such as Wolf People, Twisted Wheel, and Royal Blood, but it is Armada and its two companions making up the new EP that look destined to dramatically push and accelerate the emergence of Bernaccia such their riveting temptations

     From its opening breath Armada has intrigue soaking senses and imagination as a sonic whisper brews into a breeze as the a1189779621_2distinct tones of Noble begins the expressive narrative. As anthemic beats from Cox join the richly coaxing emergence of the song, its atmosphere and seduction intensifies becoming irresistible as the striding dark bass tones delivered by Healy and the equally eager guitar strokes from Falkous and Noble join the transfixing suasion. The song transports the imagination into imagery of chain gangs, passionate resistance in the face of oppression, and simply lives making their way through unavoidable trouble and suffocation, the power of the song inspiring thoughts to go beyond its own theme and intent. The song is a delicious blaze of sultry, smouldering drama punctuated by those striding rhythms, a bold drama soon matched by its successor.

     Circuit Ryder takes the sinewed rhythms of its predecessor and pushes them into bigger bulging enslavement, their towering call supported just as loftily by a pulsating bass beckoning and the guitar shaped emotive hues of the song. There is a western ambience embracing the track, more Native American than Morricone like and enthrallingly magnetic amongst the folk and rock seeded blues exploit. Essences of The Doors play with thoughts but equally that of Helldorado and the Dennis Hopper Choppers with more than a whisper of The Verve too at times. Accompanied by a new video from Melting Point Media, the song is simply sublime, bordering heroic and apocalyptic.

   Final song No Home For The Buffalo reaps the same climate as the previous track, its body bringing an even more potent blues flame as a scuzz kissed edge excitingly teases through the guitars. As across the other songs there is an unrelenting anthemic call to its determined yet controlled stroll, the track spawning a shamanic/ soulful drone which envelops and takes over it’s recipient like an epidemic. It is another outstanding venture standing side by side with its fellow protagonists to ignite and invigorate thoughts and passions, a union of tracks which as mentioned thrusts the band into a whole new realm of success and expectations.

   Armada is the first of a single a month sequence from Bernaccia which will make up the Cinema trilogy, each track connected to a piece of exclusive artwork which will be available as an early bird exclusive to the debut download Armada. It is a little confusing to our simple minds especially with this release already being called Cinema, but whether by that name or using Armada in your search, this is an evocative adventure which simply must not be missed.
