Witterquick – Fire & Ice

With a sound which sits rather nicely yet individually among the likes of Brand New, Young Guns, and Mallory Knox, UK outfit Witterquick has been stirring up plenty of praise carrying attention their way over the past year or so which new EP Fire & Ice can only re-energise. Offering four slices of their melody rich, emotion thick, forceful rock ‘n’ roll, the release confirms the band’s rising presence in the British music rock scene.

With success and acclaim already stoked by their debut EP, Beneath the Spinning Lights, and a sold-out UK tour with Nothing But Thieves among their own shows, Witterquick linked up with producer Romesh Dodangoda (Bring Me the Horizon, Lower Than Atlantis, Twin Atlantic) for Fire & Ice. Straight away it hints at the reasons for the increased attention upon the band, opener Shattered Suns skipping in on a summery breeze before rhythms pounce and the voice of Will Alford impressively grabs ears. The simmer of keys flirt among the tide of riffs and rhythms, guitarists Ben Chanter and Sean Davey creating a web of melody and hooks which tempt infectiously within the invitingly imposing strikes of Andy Lewis’ drums and the brooding tones of Ollie Chanter’s bass. Swiftly infectious and increasingly so as Alford impressively leads the way with his potent voice, the song grips attention and appetite.

A single which has already earned the band eager radio play, Lie To Me follows with its gentle but catchy swing and warm melodic embrace. There is a more caustic edge to the song which swarms its shadows to add further depth to its presence, but it is the emotive tide and melodic dexterity of the band and songwriting which fuels its character to great effect. Though for these ears its predecessor is a mightier lure into the EP, there is no denying the track gets under the skin and into the hips with its accomplished heat and tenacious catchiness.

Hiding Place brings a rockier swagger with its robust presence next, rhythms almost assaulting the senses with their forceful nature. It is a pleasure emulated in the fiery textures erupting from the guitars as the harmonic strengths of Alford are matched by his enterprise on keys. Emotionally and musically anthemic, the track really hits the spot in swift time, it too a perfect lure into the creative heart of Witterquick.

The release is closed up by the gentle fires of I Need A Friend Tonight, a melancholic reflection with crescendos of intensity and emotion which really blossoms over listen. It epitomises the band’s intelligent songwriting and layered sounds, over time breeding the same kind of infectiousness its rowdier companions generate more quickly.

It would be wrong to say that Fire & Ice blew us off out feet yet every moment with it has brought thick pleasure and an intrigue flooded hunger for more and there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Dead Winter – My Only Home

The early weeks of 2014, saw UK post hardcore band Dead Winter make a rather potent introduction to themselves with debut EP Erasing Glaciers. It was a magnetic six track fury of melodic metal and hardcore ferocity soaked with open potential which had already aroused attention with its first outing a few months earlier. Its re-release four years ago though, sparked a more national awareness which the band fed with their impressive live presence. The past couple of years or so have seen the band seemingly quiet. Things were happening though with ideas and directions breeding line-up changes as the band headed into their next steps now marked by new single My Only Home.

Formed in 2011, the Blackpool hailing band soon lured loyal support and ears with their sound and in turn the successful Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral for A Friend, Twin Atlantic) produced Erasing Glaciers. Weaving inspirations from bands such as Bury Tomorrow, Bring Me The Horizon, and A Day To Remember into their sound, Dead Winter and EP were soon drawing acclaim from the likes of Rock Sound, Powerplay, and Big Cheese Magazine. That regrouping and defining of direction and intent followed but now, and ahead of their first album also called My Only Home, set for release this summer, Dead Winter ‘return’ with a bang in the shape of its title track and an equally gripping video.

With Dodangoda at the helm of album and single again, My Only Home swiftly descends on ears with rapier like rhythms and badgering riffs which soon reveal their own predacious intent and snarl. There is a great metalcore edge to the trespass but a hue soon matched by the melodic enterprise and warmth increasingly aflame in the song. In the first minute alone, the band shows themselves to have tapped into a new contagious and virulent quality in their music without defusing the emotive intensity and fire that marked out their earlier exploits.

As pop punk in many ways as it is melodic metal and post hardcore crafted, the song continues to stir up appetite and pleasure, It provides a compelling and at times almost hostile anthemic proposal further shaped by the guitar craft of Jamie Townsend and Adam Roberts whilst driven by Danny Dawkins’s addictive beats and led by Ant Jones’ outstanding clean and melodic tones. There is a real maturity to the song which hopefully is a big teaser to the heart of the album to come, and a bold adventure which simply whips up attention.

My Only Home, single, video, and album looks like the moment when Dead Winter reassert themselves as one of Britain’s most exciting and seriously promising propositions.

Silver Coast – Seasons

Breeding a loyal fan-base and earning a potent reputation for their sound and live presence in their home city of Inverness and beyond, Scottish quartet Silver Coast is now getting to grips with stirring up broader attention across the UK. Latest mini album Seasons is leading the persuasion, the release an emotive roar of alternative and melodic rock with an invitation for ears which commands to be taken notice of. It is an introduction to a wider spread audience which will certainly not stir any real surprise if and when it sparks a new flood of eager ears the way of Silver Coast.

Formed late 2012, Silver Coast was soon lighting up appetites on the local live scene with highlights including supporting the likes of Fatherson, lostAlone, and King Charles in the city. Over time they began sharing their presence and sound further afield, backed by the release of the highly praised 2014 single Believe. Last year saw the foursome of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Aaron Murray, guitarist Andrew Thomas, bassist Jason Simpson, and drummer Michael Cappie playing the main stage at Belladrum and end 2015 with a show at Glasgow’s King Tuts, and with Seasons already beginning to stir things up, this year looks like following suit in success and raising attention.

art_RingMasterReviewAs Seasons opens with Pictures, there is an immediate lure of popping guitar strings as a seductive melody wraps around ears. It is a swiftly engaging entrance to release and song reinforced by the strong melodic tones of Murray and subsequently the darker heavy hues of bass amidst crisp beats. As things evolve, a sultry country tinged twang escapes guitars, sparking brightly against the sombre yet warm atmospheric sky of the song. As it continues, ears are lured deeper into the song’s creative heart, every passing minute a discovery of subtle but openly inventive twists and elements which have laid in wait for their moment to please and intrigue. The band has cited inspirations as coming from bands such as Feeder, You Me at Six, and Twin Atlantic, and similar spices, if not direct comparisons, certainly colour the opener and its following companions.

Needing You Needing Me slips in next and instantly builds upon the great start with its magnetic coaxing of sonic enterprise and vocal prowess. Through never nearing an explosion of energy, the track is as catchy as hell, even in its quietest moments, and even more compelling when it raises its creative and emotional temperature. Again without exactly sounding like them, the song brings thoughts of The Mighty Lemon Drops to the fore and also frees a scent of Orange Juice to its jangling resourcefulness before making way for the similarly infectious Wake Up. Enticing ears into following its title, the song saunters along with a melodic smile and emotive edge; further feeding an already keen appetite for the band’s highly engaging rock ‘n’ roll.

A beefier intensity is uncaged by Taking Chances next, its tempestuous air thick drama around the emerging melodic and harmonic contagiousness of the song. Rhythms add a punch and imposing shadowing whilst Thomas spins a web of sonic expression with his fingers as Murray potently croons. It is fair to say that each Silver Coast song is a kaleidoscope of flavour and textures, here light and dark colliding and colluding for another arousal of air and ears before parting for the album’s title track. A calmer hug of emotive sound, the final song is a reflective serenade of voice and piano wrapped in the expressive arms of guitar. It too bares new sides to its inventive and emotive soul with rhythms building up a brooding atmosphere which becomes subsequently laced with the provocative romancing of keys and melodies.

It is a fine end to a release which is certainly thoroughly enjoyable on the first listen or two but really comes into its own over time and with further exploration. At times it feels like Silver Coast pull back on their boldness, hinting at losing any creative restraints but in the end keeping that final spark which anticipations wants under wraps. Nevertheless Seasons is a potent first look for a great many at a band really beginning to creatively blossom.

Day Old Hate – First Light

Recently Oliver Swift, vocalist of UK alternative rock band Day Old Hate said of their new release, “We wanted to write better songs then we ever had before,” going on to add that “Making brave decisions and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone was a must; it was an intense experience – we pushed ourselves to write the best Rock record we could. Overall, it feels like a more authentic representation of Day Old Hate than anything that’s come before.” It is fair to say that First Light more than backs up his words and the band’s intent with its quintet of rousing and dramatically dynamic songs. The EP simply hits the spot, fulfilling the band’s early potential whilst still suggesting there is plenty more to come and be discovered ahead.

Formed in 2012, the Leeds band made their first attention grabbing proposal with the Distances EP a year later. Recorded with Dan Lancaster (Don Broco, Lower Than Atlantis, Mallory Knox), the encounter was a well-received introduction backed by their potent live presence and subsequently the Dan Mizen (Twin Atlantic, Bring Me The Horizon) recorded single Tides in 2014. Last year saw Day Old Hate release the video to Tides and be premiered as BBC Introducing’s track of the week in the February before going on their first UK headlining tour in April and releasing second video for the single Living Without You, again to strong support. It is easy to sense though that things are going to get far busier for the band with the release of First Light which they recorded late last year with Romesh Dodangoda (Kids in Glass Houses, Funeral For A Friend, Motorhead); it an impressive declaration of a band growing fully into their sound and breaking open the imagination to new adventure and creative exploits.

First Light Artwork_RingMaster ReviewFirst Light hits ears with its title track first, enveloping them in a rich spicy guitar coaxing before pungent rhythms and attitude loaded riffs join the affair. It is a potent invitation which only blossoms further as the song relaxes into a muscular stroll graced by the quickly impressing tones of Swift and prowled by the deliciously dark, almost predatory bass line of Josh Flynn. With rapier like strikes from drummer Ed Dennis, there is no escaping the imposing nature of the song yet its forcefulness is tempered perfectly by the melodic and fiery enterprise of guitarists Ben Fletcher and Will Smith, from riffs to hooks and incisive grooves, their imagination as dynamic as rhythms are commanding and vocals highly persuasive.

There is a touch of Mallory Knox to the band’s sound in certainly the opener filtering through the EP and for less obvious reasons a Jimmy Eat World essence but Day Old Hate only allow them to flavour something which though maybe not boldly unique is certainly distinctly theirs, more evidence coming swiftly in second track Secrets. There is a less aggressive nature to the song than in its predecessor but it still provides a mighty punch on the senses and an inflamed roar on ears potently led by the strong vocal strains of Swift. The tapestry of sound and ideation is again unpredictable and skilfully woven whilst providing an easily accessible and boisterous proposal easy to get involved in, just as the following contagious canter that is Fifteen where jabbing hooks and spicy melodies collude in an addictive lure as the vocals add emotive tenacity. The relatively reserved beginning subsequently erupts into a virulently charged bellow before returning to start the brewing success all over again resulting in a thumping anthem of energy and captivation which almost alone makes First Light a must look at.

Minutes, Hours, Days dances on ears next with its driving riffs and eager revelry, coaxing the listener into another healthy involvement before Don’t Chase Me closes the EP with arguably its catchiest offering, though all qualify in some way. With mellow reflections around infectious strolls, the song is a magnetic slice of pop rock easy to see netting a fresh catch of new eager ears on its own.

Day Old Hate has grown as a band, founding new depths in all areas which only command attention as evidenced by First Light. As suggested it feels like the tap has only just been turned on though with the potential of even bolder and richer adventures to come as the band builds on the suspected big success of their latest heftily enjoyable encounter.

Conquer Rio – Be My Lady

Taken from their recently released self-titled EP, Be My Lady is a stirring and magnetic lure into the melodic prowess of UK band Conquer Rio. The new single is a blaze of pop rock as infectious as it is evocatively impassioned in sound and voice, the kind of back-up to an initial introduction sure to round up another horde of eager and happy fans.

Conquer Rio artwork_RingMaster Review     The seeds of the band in many ways go back to “a pair of children meeting in nursery for the first time.” They were Tom Jordan and Lewis Melia who linked up years later to form Conquer Rio in 2011. Taking inspirations from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic, The Script, The Killers, Foo Fighters, and Arcade Fire into their own invention, the Warrington hailing band has increasingly drawn attention and support over the past years. The playing of the Etihad Stadium Magic Weekend twice, the Old Trafford Super League Grand Final in 2013, and supporting Scouting for Girls at the Warrington Music Festival are amongst their highlights to date; the release of their EP and now new single sure to rank up there as moments sparking new spotlights upon the band.

With a line-up of Jake Bate, Dan Cobley, and Ben Roberts alongside Jordan and Melia, Conquer Rio swiftly have ears enticed through a great opening bassline, its throaty lure soon joined by a spicy blues web cast by guitars and emotively strong vocals. The potent start only intensifies through a quickly upon ears rousing chorus, its infectiousness spreading to other elements of the song as things blossom into  familiar yet unpredictable temptation. From a gentle but inviting start the track continues to grow and build towards a tenaciously anthemic roar of a climax, and fair to say if early on only ears are involved in the song by its end Be My Lady has the whole body rocking and roaring along.

It is true that there are no major surprises within Be My Lady but also that Conquer Rio offer a track which has their creative character all over it, attributes only confirmed by the EP spawning the single. This is a band heading towards another busy year in 2016 and with songs like Be My Lady a very successful one.

Bite The Shark -Tantrum EP

It is fair to say that the first Bite The Shark release, the three track First Blood, suggested that British rock ‘n’ roll had a new protagonist to breed some real excitement over. Now the Manchester trio return with the explosive Tantrum EP, a roaring, stomping encounter not only making that previous loud hint a reality but thrusting the band to the forefront of incendiary revelry. Consisting of five ferocious and mischievous punk ‘n’ roll anthems, Tantrum simply leaves bodies breathless and emotions blazing. Every exploit within its raucous walls is the host of volatile sounds, feisty imagination, and adrenaline soaked devilment; all providing a virulent contagion conducive to naughty habits and unbridled enjoyment.

Formed a couple of months past a year ago, Bite The Shark swiftly lit an eager and vocal local following which spread as potently and easily with the release of First Blood last year. Luring in acclaim and keen online radio attention with the Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Bullet For My Valentine, Twin Atlantic) recorded release, the threesome of brothers Adam and Edd Langmead alongside Rory O’Grady have been kicking up a storm on the live scene too, the weeks leading up to the release of Tantrum alone finding the band rampaging round the UK on tour with Drop Down Smiling and Fake The Attack. Again recorded with Dodangoda, Tantrum is the band’s next mighty temptation on the nation, one with the qualities and tunes to ignite the UK rock scene.

Rock & Roll in the Soul hits ears first and lives up to its title instantly. An opening guitar hook makes the first rich connection, matched within seconds by an equally tempting heavy bassline. The song soon hits its stride with raw riffs and punchy rhythms led by similarly feisty vocals, a mix alone enough to have feet and emotions bounding along with its persuasion. Add a ridiculously compelling chorus and the first anthem of the EP is stirring up imagination and thrills. Imagination and diversity are never far from the forefront of Bite The Shark songs, as well as lyrical provocation, and both are as rampant as the thick sounds within the tremendous opener.

10897961_327152687479870_8976137320647029148_n   Good rowdy times continue with Little Fishy which follows, guitars brewing up a voracious and abrasing blaze within which vocals romp and mischievous ideation plays. With its mid-point merely a glimpse in its future, the song suddenly twists around from its initial stampede and begins prowling, indeed stalking the senses with predatory invention before returning to a frantic onslaught which in turn slips into a catchy TV show theme tune finale. The track is just irresistible just like Shiny Shoes straight after. Soon showing a heavier ferocious nature of its own to its riffs and rhythms, the song reveals an essence of classic rock entwined with power pop in its punk romp. Once more grooves and hooks breed addictiveness whilst vocals and fierce melodies offer searing magnetic hues.

There is no chance of a breather at any point within Tantrum either, each song a full on tempest of infection fuelled incitement as evidenced again by the outstanding Killzone. From the opening twang of riffs, ears and body are ready to accept the suggestive rampage in waiting The track’s entrance is almost a limbering up before chest beating rhythms and fury lined riffs explode in a steamy onrush. It is not a hell for leather charge though, hooks and band harmonies a tasty tempering to the aggressive foot to the floor energy offered, but it is certainly a seriously rousing slab of rock ‘n’ roll.

The release closes with Sleep when You’re Dead, though the CD also includes Burn em to the ground and Burn and Gas & Air which made up the bulk of the previous release. Drawing on blues rock spicing for its melodic essences, the track as its predecessor, is a balls to the wall rocker leaving no room for abstinence from joining in with body, voice, and energies. It is a glorious end to a spectacular riot of punk ‘n’ roll tenacity, a song unafraid to explore new depths and areas of songwriting and sound whilst the release simply bellows that Bite The Shark is one of the bands with the potential to take British rock ‘n’ roll into a new heyday.

Oh Captive – Two Mirrors

It is hard to supress a roar of frustration and disappointment when after enjoying a new and thrilling encounter from a band with all the tools and sounds to be a major presence in British alternative rock, they announce ‘on the eve’ of its unveiling they are to be no more. That is what has happened with Bristol quartet Oh Captive. Just a couple or so weeks before new EP Two Mirrors is released to light up ears and appetites, the band announced it had called it a day, though it might emerge to be more an internal evolution resulting in a name change and new direction rather than a full departure. Time will tell but whatever the outcome, they leave behind two impressive releases and a collection of vibrant and inventive songs, their latest the most captivating yet.

Formed in 2012, Oh Captive swiftly lit their local music scene and subsequently set about the whole UK scene with their energetic live presence, playing with the likes of Sonic Boom Six, UK Subs, Straight Lines, Max Raptor, Sharks, Blitz Kids, I Divide, Fighting With Wire, and Scholars along the way. Their sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic, open and potent spices in the band’s debut EP Advance Creature, which was released in the March of 2013. It was a stirring and dynamic offering rippling with a potential which has been realised with sizeable success within Two Mirrors. The past year has seen Oh Captive supporting the likes of Marmozets and Arcane Roots, and make highly successful appearances at festivals such as Leopalooza and New Age, whilst media attention has grown as potently too. Now it may be over, but if so the band has gone out with a bang and ensured attention for their next exploits will be eagerly attentive.

Oh Captive - Cover Artwork   Two Mirrors opens with Recover, an instant ear grabbing proposition as vocalist Tim Kelly and a tangy rub of guitar combine a minimalistic but highly tempting bait to bring the song into view. It is not long before the heavy throated bassline of Tom Hitchins and the punchy beats of drummer Chris Hill leap in, accompanied by sonic flames cast by the guitars of Curtis King and Kelly. Immediately there is a drama to song and sound, light and dark textures colluding in an imposing but inviting web. Settling down a little for the continuation of the narrative from Kelly, the song increases its lure as it builds to energetic crescendos and an anthemic chorus. There are no major surprises in the melody soaked track but there is a bold invention to match its gait, which leaves expectations and predictability absent protagonists in the outstanding encounter.

The impressive start is backed with similar strength by Motion / No Motion. The second song is a rhythmically raucous stomp from its first breath with Hitchins offering a magnetic lure of a bassline. It is a dark coaxing surrounded by the concussive stick ability of Hill, a thick drawing of attention never wavering even as they are immersed in the sonic and melodic blaze of the guitars and the ever impressing tones of Kelly. There is something missing compared to its predecessor though, a small element just stopping it drawing the lustier satisfaction bred by Recover, but nevertheless the song has feet and imagination leaping in tandem with its resourceful enterprise.

Live Fast Don’t Last explores more of a croon for its creative shape and emotive intensity next. It has a slower flow and a more immersive canvas than the last songs with melodic tenacity and evocative expression from the vocals providing a deeper reflective colour and emotion to the encounter. It smoulders and tempts pleasingly as it shows another side and depth to the band’s songwriting and its creative realisation, though again cannot quite emulate the success of the first track and indeed its successor.

The EP’s title track brings it all to a lively and impressive close. Two Mirrors bounds along with another invitingly dark bassline aligned to eagerly swung beats, whilst their union is drenched in an anthemic energy and charm which the band seems to conjure at ease. Veined by richly enticing and tenacious guitar craft, the song makes a pungent end to a fine and enthralling release. If this is to be the end of Oh Captive, song and EP has seen them go out on a high and will leave fans saddened and newcomers kicking themselves for not discovering their promise and quality before.
