Consisting of six cheery yet melancholic indie pop tracks, the Urban Glow EP from British noise popsters Trash is a captivating jangle of sound and enterprise quickly giving big hints as to why there is a buzz brewing around the band and indeed the reason that UK label Clue Records has taken them to their bosom. There is simplicity to the Trash sound yet sparkling invention which lies behind that deceptive quality, that union alone resulting in songs which dance with the senses as the band offer lyrical propositions which may wear an alluring smile but look into the shadows and disappointments of finding things are never as rosy as they seem.

The EP’s press release reveals more in its description of the theme behind the band’s new release; “The tone of Urban Glow encapsulates anxiety, breakdowns and a typical British summer; glimpses of hazy sunshine, optimism and hopes of neverending highs, brought back down to earth by a rain shower on the horizon and the realisation that work/school/college/uni/love/life isn’t quite what you’d hoped it would be.” It is an open melancholia which is as magnetic as the warmer hues of the Chesterfield quartet’s inviting and infectious sound. Fair to say Urban Glow does not take the listener by the scruff of the neck with its impact and presence but instead entices with a seductive prowess to its character that only leaves thick enjoyment as its legacy.

TRASH - Urban Glow[Artwork]_RingMaster Review     The opening Intro does its job right away, is forty odd second a charming coaxing which lays out the melodic foundations for the feistier stroll of the band’s latest single 4 Miles to spring from. The song instantly casts a rhythmic enticement to involve feet and ears, that lure teased and stroked by slithers of expressive guitar and less sparky but potently evocative vocals. It is a tempting mix which just blossoms as fresh adventure fuels the guitars and rhythms breed more tempting shadows, whispers of pop punk also joining their revelry as additional nostalgic hues recall an eighties/nineties lo fi/high essence.

It is a catchy proper start which continues with the excellent Drift, its mellow but keen swing feeding off essences to be found in bands likes the House Of Love and especially The Mighty Lemon Drops. It is an infectious shuffle of a song which smiles with melodic tenacity and atmospheric warmth yet again has that gloomier tinge to its lyrical and emotional underbelly; a combination of character which lights up the EP’s title track right after.

The EP just gets better with every passing song, its fourth offering aural magnetism that simply captivates as it spins a creative and inventive web of sound and ideation. Once more there is that simplicity to its hooks, harmonies, and fuzzier lining, but all aligned to each other with adept and imaginative prowess. Ending in a wonderfully rousing climax, the song departs to leave Sad Boys (All I Wanna Do) the opportunity to close the EP off in similarly fine style, which it does with ease though maybe the keenness for its predecessor remains slightly richer. As virulently contagious as anything on the EP but with its own individual festival of tangy grooves, spicy hooks, and infection loaded invention, the song gives Urban Glow an enthralling and fiercely enjoyable finale which alone lives up to the general sense of the EP’s title.

Just as each song seems in varying degrees to eclipse the one before, each listen of the Urban Glow EP impresses more than the one before. It is heavily enjoyable stuff and the fact that at the same time as getting involved in its success, you feel that the band is barely tapping into the potential of their creative depths only breeds real excitement bred for what is to come from the band.

A.C.O.D – Another Path…

Following two well-received albums, French metallers A.C.O.D have reinforced their impressive presence with another accomplished release in the tidy shape of the Another Path… EP. Consisting of five tracks which blend various styles and essences into its melody driven rapacity, the release without igniting an intensive fire in the belly leaves ears and emotions healthily satisfied.

Formed in 2006, the Marseille sextet first drew a wide attention with debut album Point Zero in 2009 backed even more potently by its successor First Earth Poison two years later. Earning a strong live reputation at home the band also found strong support across Italy and Japan. The new Shawter (Dagoba) produced EP pushes the stature and sound of A.C.O.D to a level that you suspect will lead the band to a new strength and expanse of support and recognition.

The release opens with its title track and needs little encouragement to unleash a persuasive torrent of riffs and grinding grooves amidst a commanding rhythmic coaxing. It is a concentrated tempest on the ear but soon discovers a new acod coverferocity which floods the senses with thrash bred hostility and blackened predation. The vocals bring a potent and varied causticity to the adventure too, the twin vocal assault as distinct as they are united in their abrasing narrative. The track continues to flare up with unpredictable twists and inventive colour though its core drive remains in control until it makes way for the following Black Wings. The track continues the immense start with its own enthralling offering, riffs and rhythms again consuming ears in a fierce mesh of intent and enterprise. Hooks and melodies again stir up the imagination within the turbulence of the song, essences of progressive and technical metal as impacting as the antagonistic passion of the track. There is an undefined spark missing to the track to leave it paler against its predecessor, something which in many ways applies to the EP, but it still ignites a keener appetite and impressed reaction for its fiery proposition.

Unleash The Fools steps up next, its immediate intimidation reminding a little of Killswitch Engage. There is a similarity to the previous track in its insurgent riffing and threatening rhythmic attack but soon unveils a richer vein of emotive melodic and sonic expression. The cleaner growled vocals on the song are a little unconvincing for the first time on the release but swiftly excused thanks to the strength of the pure clean delivery within a graceful and provocative melodic detour. Again it is a song which arguably should impress more than it does such the skill and imagination within in, but nevertheless leaves satisfaction full for next up Abuse Me to run with. That it does skilfully with an instantaneous stride of hostile intent within a predatory merger of rhythms and guitar. The darker toned vocals equally menace thoughts as the track with its turbulent and gripping drama returns the release to its opening plateau of adventure and creative enticement.

   Another Path… is brought to a thunderous conclusion by Words of War. Its initially heavy footed stalking gait subsequently entwined with a more urgent thrash seeded scourge of riffs and rhythmic intensity to which vocals add their venomous syllables and spiteful passion. The track took longer to persuade than others on the release but emerged with its discord kissed sonic bait and pleasingly niggling riffery as another striking highlight.

A.C.O.D has a sound which is refreshingly hard to pigeonhole, think of a style and there is probably a potent whiff of it in the superbly crafted passion driven songs within the EP. As said Another Path… is not an encounter to really set metal ablaze but certainly it gives it a flavoursome proposition to eagerly devour.

Various: We Love Trash The Best Of The Garage Punk Hideout Vol.7

Seemingly compilation albums and certainly a series of them is a rare thing these days. In the seventies/eighties they were a common occurrence as independent labels helped new bands find a platform to be heard. Possibly with the internet the need is not as strong as it was but there is nothing more thrilling than a compilation of unknown bands to trawl within and feast upon. One of the few and best series of compilations are the Hideout Comp Series. Released on GRGPNK Records, a label created by the GaragePunk Hideout trashy rock n roll social networking site to feature its members and bands, the series of releases to date have brought some of the best, exciting and openly distinct new artists around which fall within the spheres of punk, garage rock and punk, trash, psych and psycho edged sounds in their various outfits, basically anything that is wild and rock n roll.

We Love Trash is the seventh in the series and follows in aim and quality the previous sextet of releases. Each has brought an array of diverse bands and sounds to thrill and incite further investigation of to varying degrees and the latest is no different. What is good about the releases is even if a track does not ignite any burning eagerness to hear more you still recognise and respect the promise and unique breath of each band, undoubtedly the result of the good selection process at the label.

Consisting of twenty two tracks from bands around the globe the album is a full and rewarding chunk of schizo sounds and energy in their many shades. With a random selection we will mention a few of the treats to find on the release but each and every track is an eager and perfect irrepressible bedlam of ear blistering inciting sounds.

The album opens with Blackout from German band Trash Emperors, the track setting the release off with a fine brew of scuzzed garage punk and agitated energy. Leaving the senses in an awakened state of pleasure the song makes way for the excellent Ted from Brooklyn band The Amputees. Raw punk n roll at its best the song is a catchy middle finger piece of growling contempt to stir up the heart.

Swizz garage punks The Monofones and lo-fi fuzz duo The Happy Kids keep things brewing with pleasing variation and a persistent manic air with their respective tracks Alright and Seven Are The Horns of Satan. The first is an urgent psych punk grazing of hypnotic pulses and scraping discord with a sixties air of Cradle whilst the latter is a simpering electrified surge which treats every brain cell to an electrified sonic scratch, both songs further showing the diverse and enterprising talent within the ranks of the album and the series of releases as a whole.

With such a spread of styles and levels of production different parts of the album will thrill some more than others and vice versa but We Love Trash is never less than pleasing and insistently mischievous with songs like the irrepressible Cigarette from the Austrian garage punks The Shirley MacLaines and the sonic hip swaggering My Groupie from Thee Martian Boyfriends leading the ear and heart into a welcome wicked dance.

Favourite tracks from the release for us here come in the shape of the outstanding psychotically snaring Good Night, Sleep Tight from San Diego based The Bloody Hollies, the pissed blues punk Black Garage Door from The Chrome Cranks, and the Ramones infected contagion that is Turn That TV Off from Boris The Sprinkler. The trio of songs tick all the right boxes and ignite the fiercest sparks of satisfaction but there is something for everyone on what is an excellent album you just have to go and enjoy

Toxic Holocaust – Conjure And Command

Those wishing the intricacies of meandering progressive sounds or the hypnotic yet unsettling discordance of djent wizardry or even the vast array of deliberately confused but masterfully conjured intensity of a Coilguns or Retox then look away. Oregon metalers Toxic Holocaust return with new album Conjure And Command and simply aggressive straight from the hip brutal metal that does what says on the tin. Exploding via Relapse Records the album just bristles and aggravates within the ear with the finest and rawest of heavy metal, thrash and punk energy. You know what you are going to get from the very first fierce uncomplicated note of the opening track and it never lets one down in satisfaction or stirring intimidating quality. Straight forward exhilarating metal for straight forward eager tastes.

Formed in 1999 by Joel Grind merging his love of classic punk and metal into a distinct and crushing sound, the band has kicked up a sonic storm with their previous three full lengths and Conjure And Command continue in similar vein. The trio of Joel Grind, Phil Gnaast (Zeller), and Nicholas T. Rage (Bellmore) have unleashed an album that shrugs belligerence as its muscular riffs and threatening sounds come forth angrier, heavier and with more spite than before but still is unmistakably Toxic Holocaust.  They do not offer anything vastly different from their previous releases and to some extent other like veined bands but you always know who you are letting loose when one of their tracks is bombarding the ear. As venomous as ever Grind’s swipes and attacks, his disgust at this poisonous world and the evil of man never veiled in any way. Conjure And Command is a very welcome no holds barred merciless attack on the senses.

Musically the band once more bring echoes of bands like Bathory, Venom, Municipal Waste and the likes of Total Fucking Destruction and Slayer, all toned and fused to their own impressive ideas to create metal that though abrasive is a joy to suffer. Opening track is ‘Judgment Awaits You’ and the title sums up the album’s sound. It judges with tumultuous riffs and caustic guitars challenging throughout the experience and very easy to ‘suffer’ when it sounds this good. 

The tracks come thick and fast never leaving a moment throughout the album for a breather. Each song is a distinct entity that offers variation and eager intent to punish though overall there is a similarity across the album that works, the similarity simply being Toxic Holocaust’s distinct sound. Tracks like the immense violence of the lead track and irresistible ‘Bitch’, ‘Nowhere To Run’ with dark intimidating riffs and vocal delivery reminding of early Killing Joke,  the menacing poisonous ‘I Am Disease’, and the punk thrash glory of ‘The Liars Are Burning’ with a groove that incites reactions stand out most impressively. The last of the four reminding predominantly of early punks and though not specifically the likes of Discharge and Agnostic Front come to mind.

Ending on the call to arms intent of ‘Sound The Charge’ the album is an enterprising demand on the ear with blissful chunks of thrash/metal aggression and a must for all who loves to be battered and bruised musically. Toxic Holocaust has returned to once more ignite the senses and release the primal instincts within.
