Buster Shuffle – I’ll Take What I Want

As you shiver over the winter months, body and energy needs something to keep the cold at bay and spirit stomping and Buster Shuffle have just the right tonic in the shape of their new album, I’ll Take What I Want. Bursting with their most virulent and imaginative sound yet, the UK quartet’s fourth full-length mischievously swings and devilishly strolls as it grabs limbs and soul like a rascal puppeteer.

I’ll Take What I Want casts more of the fusion of ska, pop, and rock ‘n roll Buster Shuffle has increasingly pushed and established since emerging back in 2007. Each of their previous albums has added a fresh lick of enterprise and adventure but the street carnival of their latest offering is a whole new ball game and easily the band’s most unique and thrilling proposal yet. Debut album Our Night Out of 2010 swiftly lured acclaim and attention the way of the London outfit subsequently backed by a live success soon seeing the band share stages with the likes of The Holloways, The Wombats, Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Chas ‘n’ Dave, a list which Buster Shuffle over the years has added artists such as Lee Scratch Perry, Frank Turner, Drop Kick Murphys, Madness, The Blockheads, The Rifles, and Flogging Molly. The albums Do Nothing and especially Naked has increased their presence and reputation with unerring fun and craft something I’ll Take What I Want can only vigorously escalate.

With their street wise/reflective lyrics and multi-flavoured sound, Buster Shuffle instantly infest ears and appetite with album opener I Don’t Trust a Word You Say. Straight away a rousing wave of vocal and musical temptation surges through ears, vocalist Jet Baker leading the way with his tones and equally potent piano revelry as rhythms swing. Hitting an impossibly contagious stroll part ska, part old school punk with a dash of fellow Brits The Tuesday Club to it, the song instantly has the body bouncing and passions greedy with its boisterous antics.

The forcibly captivating start only continues as We Fall to Pieces steps in with its folk ska rascality, the song like a fusion of Blur and Tankus The Henge around the throbbing lure of Tim Connell’s double bass and the crisp beats of Terry Mascall. Again Baker’s piano and James Stickley’s guitar collude in creative chicanery as the former’s tones and words tantalise across two minutes of instinctively bold rock ‘n’ roll before Pretty Boy swaggers in with its own infectious dynamics and enterprise. Imagine Television Personalities and again Blur bursting in on Bad Manners and you get a flavour of the track’s gorgeous recipe of enticement.

There is no escaping a rich Madness spice within next up See You Next Week, its determinedly infectious canter pure instruction to the body to dance and ears to greedily devour before The Estate takes the listener into the danger and shadows of modern city life with its spunk pop manipulations. Set across two stages, the day light vivacity of its initial stomp is a darkened night lit rush by its departure, song and imagination running with instinctive eagerness to only increase the already rich impact of the release.

I’ll Be in Peckham has a touch of gypsy to its virulent amble next, its seductive yet off-kilter street  waltz manna to these ears as pretty much the whole of I’ll Take What I Want to be honest but especially manipulating as it sets up the warm gallop of the album’s madness soaked title track. It is ska pop to get frisky with, hips getting a keen workout as melodies and hooks unite in an irresistible web of catchy temptation.

With a throbbing tuba-esque hook to swing from, Your Mommy Is So Hot for Me is simply ska impishness so easy to devour, the band’s constant humour as virulent as their sound as too their lyrical prowess as shown yet again in the predacious flirtation of The Tables Have Now Turned and the indie punk pop jangle of Take Them All. Both songs tease and tempt with their creative twists and unpredictable turns, all lined with the never relinquishing infectiousness of the Buster Shuffle sound.

The album is completed by the folk littered contagion of Banana Thief, its ska spun carnival also embracing a country twang as tasty as its other infectious ingredients, and finally the instrumental skanking and harmonic seduction of the Outro Song. With its sixties espionage/sci-fi TV theme tune air and not for the first time, the golden hues of backing vocalist Carrie Griffiths radiating, the track is a masterful end to a real treat of an album. Also featuring the keyboard and vocal enterprise of Pete Oag, I’ll Take What I Want is sheer pleasure and addiction in one; quite simply another year high for music.

Matinée – Empty

With the melodic charms of debut album, These Days, still luring attention over a year later, backed by subsequent singles, the Italy hailing, London based Matinée are poised to unveil a new magnetic encounter posing as a single. Empty is a warm kiss on the senses, a melodic blush of elegance and catchy enterprise which equally is a rousing adventure hard to stop feet and enjoyment showing eager reactions to. The single in many ways echoes the creative exploits of that first album but at the same time pushes the invention and rich weave of flavours to new captivating heights.

Since emerging a handful of years back, Matinée has persistently impressed and fascinated a growing following of fans and attention. The success of their album has been matched and backed by a live presence which has drawn its own praise with the quartet sharing stages with the likes of Razorlight, Mystery Jets, Futureheads, The Wombats, Pete and the Pirates, British Sea Power and many more along the way. Empty sees the band linking up with Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Carl Barat, Glasvegas) again, the producer repeating his part of These Days, alongside Chris Geddes art_RingMasterReviewfrom Belle and Sebastian this time around.

Empty opens on a gentle rhythmic pulse and a charming drizzle of melodic rain, each synth cast drop a golden burst of warmth and enticement. The vocals of synth/guitarist Luigi Tiberio only adds to the attraction, his Italian accent bringing a touch of the Mediterranean and further infectiousness. Once the bolder, darker hues of Alfredo Ioannone’s bass and Alessio Palizzi’s lively beats join the affair on ears, the song is an enthralling blend of light and shadows amidst darker emotion and creative festivity.

Just as impressive in the song as the sounds offered, is the way sometimes the keys seem to lead the way, in other moments the guitar of Giuseppe Cantoli do or the vocals of Tiberio potently backed by those of Ioannone. The reality is that everything is equal yet the ebb and flow of the song, its rich crescendos provides a deceptive and very pleasing drama which consumes attention.

If you have yet to enjoy a Matinée performance, Empty is the perfect moment and adventure to spend your ticket on.

Now it is the turn of their single to bring another wave of keen interest their way and from its opening moments These Days shows a potency to do just that. The opening tangle of guitar and synth bred melodies is an immediate inescapable invitation, especially once the warm tones of Tibeiro join the enchanting start. The song is soon showing bigger muscles though as a dark bassline colludes with punchy beats, their union an imposing yet respectful frame around the emerging weave of melodic revelry and harmonic temptation. It is a lively and invigorating mix, not explosive but a captivating festivity of voice and sound gripping feet and thoughts as easily as ears and emotions.

The song is pure rock pop for a summer day but similarly a warming romp for colder and darker moments. The perfect doorway into the arms of their album, though not the greatest moment on said release, which with the single’s impressive proposition will only excite newcomers, These Days is a heartily and thoroughly recommended encounter, album or single.

Matinée – These Days

A release radiating melodic smiles and mischievous energy from start to finish, These Days from UK indie rockers Matinée is one of those encounters which lingers and niggles away at the psyche in and away from its magnetic presence. The album tantalises and flirts with constant imagination and revelry so that whilst it does not exactly light a fire in the passions it is a persistent and refreshing incitement for ears and emotions. There has been an eagerly growing buzz around the East London quartet and the release of their debut full-length reveals exactly why.

Taking their name from the Franz Ferdinand song of the same name, Matinée has earned acclaim and support through their lively stage presence and vivacious sounds. The band has supported the Scottish band on shows in Italy, that leading Matinée to be invited to play numerous major venues in the country whilst receiving strong radio support. With the sharing of stages with the likes of Razorlight, Mystery Jets, Futureheads, The Wombats, Pete and the Pirates, British Sea Power amongst many also under their belts, the band is on a feisty rise, an ascent already reinforced by their singles starting with the acclaimed City Lifestyle. The Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Carl Barat, Glasvegas) produced These Days is the next potent slice of persuasion from the band, a festival of pop rock sure to awaken a broader and keener spotlight upon the foursome of Luigi Tiberio (vocals, synth, guitar), Alfredo Ioannone (vocals , bass), Giuseppe Cantoli (guitars), and Alessio Palizzi (drums).

Opener Bigger Picture instantly grips ears and imagination as an electro pulsing is swiftly joined by heavy resonating rhythms. It is a compelling entrance which only increases in potency as vocals bring their effect wrapped presence into an almost post punk temptation. Choppy riffs link up next as the song shifts into a synth pop/ electro rock stroll complete with imposing shadows and melodic provocation. There is also an eighties feel to the song which only adds to the evocative colour and air of the bewitching and inventively intriguing encounter.

The captivating start is followed by the mellower White Lies, keys bringing a gentle caress initially which is cored by a dark roaming bassline. Energy is raised as a catchy and harmonic chorus grasps ears, the vocals of Tiberio and cover170x170Ioannone an engaging blend which filters through into the surrounding crystalline sounds. The feistiness of the chorus leaves a spark from which the rest of the song also finds greater urgency in its presence, blooming into a controlled yet rampant charge of contagion before the album’s title track and recent single unveils its similarly infectious parade of enterprise. The track is a transfixing shuffle of elegant melodies and emotively expressive vocals within another pungent rhythmic frame, an easy addiction and thoroughly enthralling slice of creative revelry.

Both Said I and City Lifestyle keep attention and appetite bound, the first a smouldering coaxing with wiry grooves and hooks around the persistently heavy footed and thrilling bass lure from Ioannone giving greater depth to songs. There is a touch of Futureheads to the song, especially in its more agitated moments as a whispering eccentricity provides richer intrigue and sonic radiance. The song pulsates as does its successor with its flirty swagger and fleet footed shuffle. It is a treat of a persuasion, an insatiable dance of Arctic Monkey like musical and vocal hooks aligned to Editors bred melodic mischief, and one of the major pinnacles of the album.

     All The Good Fella’s is no slouch at exciting ears and feet either, its slower pace still a bubbling stroll as acidic melodies and spicy vocal harmonies play and tease over a punchy rhythmic stepping. The bass again brings the perfect contrast and compliment to the creative flames provided by Cantili and the warm keys of Tiberio. It is a template for all the songs yet not one sounds like another as proven again by Nobody Like Me and its sinew guided vibrant prowl through a raw and fiery sonic weave. The heaviest track on the album but still a virulent infection to ignite feet and emotions, the song provides another side to the character of the album and Matinée’s songwriting, even if maybe it lacks the spark of some if its predecessors.

New single Missing Pieces of a Jigsaw is next and straight away spreads a masterful cloak of contagion and melodic luster across the senses, sweeping the imagination and emotions up in its lively sunshine before passing them onto If You’re Gone. Featuring Mike Cook and Chris Geddes, past and present of Belle and Sebastian, the track is a thick and enthralling ball of impassioned melodies and expression enriched by the brass flames of Cook and rampant keys of Geddes.

The album comes to a close with 40 Years Old, a sultry and slow burning song which fails to excite as most of its companions on the album but still ensures the album leaves on a potent tempting.

From a strong first impression These Days just gets bigger and stronger with time, as mentioned never setting a fire but inducing a romance in thoughts and emotions through its presence and sound which most bands can only dream of. Matinée is heading towards very healthy and exciting horizons if the potential and majesty of their first album is anything to go by.

Arcade Parade – Grace

Hailing from Shropshire, UK band Arcade Parade instantly made a mark with their debut single Cave of Swimmers last year, the song taken from their recently released EP of the same name. Grace is the second single from the four track EP and again shows why there is plenty of excitement and expectations for the quartet. The song is a vibrant and enticing piece of indie rock where melodies and rhythmic temptation go hand in hand with fiery enterprise.

Consisting of brothers Ollie (guitar and vocals) and Elliot Scott (bass), Jacob Ferguson (guitar and vocals), and Dan Byrne (drums), Arcade Parade since forming a little over two years ago have made a strong and potently growing impression on fans and UK rock. As well as the releases the band has impressed with their live performances, their own shows as well as successful shows at the likes of Osfest (twice) alongside Example, Razorlight and Hard-Fi, and Shrewsbury Fields Forever Festival with The Wombats, The Sunshine Underground and Simon & Oscar from Ocan Colour Scene bringing acclaim. The band recorded the Cave of Swimmers EP with producer Gavin Monaghan with the results sure to make 2013 a landmark moment for them one feels.

A gentle brewing and underwhelming start to the song raises eyebrows slightly but soon a strong vein of sonic guitar temptation scythes through the slight distant skies of the song whilst the vocals cast their impressive narrative and delivery within the emotive atmosphere. The song is a shining example where less is more, its elements allowed to make a call of clarity before combining for an ear thrilling climatic chorus. Though arguably not as instant as their first single the song is a coaxing and devilish persuasion which gets better and more contagious with each listen. Further highlights of the song come with the emotive bass tones throughout and the unpredictable and exciting production which has the song seemingly drift around the senses which only adds to the experience.

It is fair to say whilst listening to Grace you get the feeling there is much more within the band which is either not yet discovered or held back but it only accentuates the promise which is rife as the song dances and pleasures the appetite. Arcade Parade is genuinely a band to watch out for as they evolve into an even more enterprising encounter.

Candidate23 – Recurring Dreams EP

Having strongly impressed with their previous EP Stay Awake, UK indie band Candidate23 has just unleashed their new offering to again show how exciting a band they are whilst bringing a vibrant evolution in their already thrilling creativity. As with their other releases the quintet from the North West of the country have sculpted a sound of undefined familiarity but one which employs it in an encounter which leaves the passions gasping and imagination fiery through open originality and carefully honed craft.

Formed in 2010, the Liverpool based Candidate23 have only made good impressions, their allure and temptation growing more potent with each release and live performance which has seen the band alongside the likes of Funeral for a Friend, Young Guns and The King Blues. There breakthrough to the widest national awareness is overdue and deserved but still biding its time, teasing us and them but with Recurring Dreams that lock just might and should have the right key finally. With references to the likes of The Wombats and Foals upon them, to which we would add Placebo, Mind Museum, and in some ways Doves, and sewn within their own distinct sound anticipation of a big year for the band from this EP alone is unavoidable.

The title track is a brief brewing ambient beckoning to introduce the release and draw one into the following mighty temptress of a song in Float Away. The track is a sparkling explosion of melodic colour and winding expressive atmospheres veined by rolling rhythms which cage the ear for the vocals of Will Hayes to gentle stroke forth the lyrical heart of the song. The singer instantly impresses, as he has on previous releases, his words and delivery seductively dancing across the vibrant mingling of tantalising enterprise from guitarists Alex McIntyre and Andy Perrin and those still energetic rhythms of drummer Jono Tringham side by side with the rumbling basslines of Ryan Dennett. The emotive lure of the song is never far away or lost in the energy and steps forward most potently for the closing breath of the track as it passes over to next up Until It’s Cold.

From a gentle wash of emotional keys and the soaring tones of Hayes the song rises to its feet with again the beats of Tringham framing the warmth with rich firm persuasion which invites limbs into the affair as much as the emotions. Though the song does not explode with the same intensity as its predecessor it packs a colourful punch in its superbly crafted melodies and equally compelling harmonies to leave extra hunger in the keen appetite already encouraged by the EP.

I’ve Been Here Before is a slow burning delight, a song which took time to make its full declaration before the senses but emerged as one of the most powerful and lingering gems on Recurring Dreams. A smouldering lullaby for the heart with a rising intensity to its breath and enveloping heat, the track offers familiarity in a brand new guise which covers the senses like an old friend which will never lack a welcome but equally intrigues with an undiscovered emotional depth. As with the whole EP, there is nothing not to love about the song as the band show they are as adept and imaginative in slowly crooning the passions as they are igniting them with an infectious anthemic fuse.

The final pair of songs confirms an already done deal between release and ardour, the outstanding I Want You a stirring almost riotous slice of aural contagion, the virulent call of the chorus the perfect climax to the magnetic verse and the call of vocals and sound which rage with invention and lush beauty. The closing First Steps matches what came before with elegant sonic caresses within its enthralling fascination of energy and rhythmic keenness. Though arguably not the most dynamically capturing song on the release it makes a final declaration of just how impressive and thoroughly pleasing Recurring Dreams is.

Available as a free download by a band generous in sound and invention, their new EP has all the weaponry and class to be the trigger for national domination before taking on the world. Candidate23 has provided the mighty tools for all to enjoy and spread the word.

Arcade Parade: Cave Of Swimmers (Radio Edit)

Since forming in 2010, it is fair to say UK indie rock band Arcade Parade has not let any dust settle on their vibrant presence as they have performed at some of the notable venues around the UK, such as O2 Academy 2 & 3 in Birmingham and The Sugarmill in Stoke. They have also played Osfest twice matching their strong sounds to artists such as Example, Razorlight and Hard-Fi and the Shrewsbury Fields Forever Festival with The Wombats, The Sunshine Underground, and Simon & Oscar from Ocan Colour Scene. Their live reputation has certainly risen at the same time and as nationwide recognition is waiting to be persuaded, the release of their debut single should make an initial  strong impression to set things off.

The band recently recorded their first EP with acclaimed producer Gavin Monaghan, which will get its release early next year but 557768_10151140260428691_534556431_nfirst comes single and video Cave Of Swimmers. The Shropshire quartet of Ollie (guitar and vocals) and Elliot Scott (bass), Jacob Ferguson (guitar and vocals) and Dan Byrne (drums), create a sound which layers precise inviting hooks and melodies over unpredictable and inventive beats alongside rich compelling basslines. As the single proves the quartet know how to shape a song into something enticing and thoughtful without resorting to obvious lures. The track is openly infectious nevertheless and makes a strong taster for their forthcoming release. Not exactly rich in originality yet fresh in its breath and energy, the song from its opening summery caresses around sultry and a winding tight melody catches the imagination with ease. The vocals are as warm as the sounds with an expression which balances nicely with the enthused energy and sinewy melodic enterprise veining the pleasing engagement with the ear.

You can never be completely sure of a band from one song alone but certainly Cave Of Swimmers has ensured the release of the EP next year will not go without intriguing attention.
