Greyhaven – State Of Mind

Finding an inventive and commanding middle ground between the raw intensity of metal and the anthemic infectiousness of alternative rock with a firm dash of post hardcore involved, British quintet Greyhaven recently uncaged their new EP State Of Mind. It is an encounter which roars and serenades ears and imagination in equal measure; bullying and seducing the senses with seven explosive and imposingly compelling proposals.

London based, Greyhaven formed early 2015 and soon earned a potent reputation for a live presence which has seen the band play alongside the likes of Create To Inspire, Idols Of Apathy, Vera Grace, and The Afterparty. Their first year also the release of debut EP The Flood, a well-received introduction which solidly set the band out as one to watch. State Of Mind suggests much more as it reveals Greyhaven taking new strides in songwriting and sound with riveting results.

Recorded with Dan Kerr (Shields, Create To Inspire, Despite my Deepest Fear), State Of Mind is a tempest of anthemic intensity and sound aligned to mellower moments of melodic intimacy. From opening suggestive instrumental Sinners a sense of creative and emotive drama blossoms in ears, the track growing in predacious shadows and poetic charm before it eventually drifts into the waiting jaws and rousing tempestuousness of Hexes. As guitarists Alex Hills and Jim White weave a tapestry of descriptive riffs and melodic tendrils in tandem with similarly potent keys, the raw throated growl of bassist Edd Kerton explodes to be subsequently replaced by the impressive clean and emotive tones of vocalist Sam Paterson. Tapestry is the best word for the song, so many elements across the band bred with imagination and interwoven in a proposal which never stops revealing new essences and shades of tone in every listen.

greyhaven_cover_artworkCopyright RingMaster: MyFreeCopyrightIt is a craft and prowess which applies to all songs within the release to be fair, the following Darkest Hour swift confirmation as a great growling bassline from Kerton and the merciless swings of drummer Connor Tate link up with the harmonious delivery of Paterson and the emotive melodies which embrace ears. A fiery solo only adds to the imposing yet captivating drama shaping the song, again each minute a cauldron of enterprise breeding new adventures with every encounter.

There are familiar elements to the Greyhaven sound which suggest inspirations from the likes of Architects and Alexisonfire, and maybe are most openly apparent within the excellent On & On, though they are spices quickly engulfed in the band’s own eager imagination. The source of the band’s new video, the track leaps around and burns like a sonic fire, the guitars licking at the senses with melodic heat as rhythms crackle at the core amidst vocally coloured flames.

From one powerful persuasion to another as the highly infectious Our Stand steps forward next, its proposal bruising and magnetic as Paterson shines within another storm of metallic predation and emotionally inflamed contagion as savage as it is rousing as it is pop lined infectious. That lighter air also frequents successor Brother, though again Greyhaven infuse it into a creative and musical ferocity which almost venomously snarls. The song adds another shade to the sound and songwriting of the band, its catchiness an inescapable lure perfectly courted by a barbarous intent headed by Kerton’s toxically grouchy growls.

Closed by a thoroughly enjoyable acoustic version of The Flood, the title track of that first EP, State Of Mind proves and further suggests that Greyhaven is heading towards becoming a potent part of the British heavy rock scene. Already they have provided two releases no one should ignore.

Elements – Make It Out Alive

As part of the exciting 2015 released Where We Once Begun EP, the track Make It Out Alive was an offering from UK alternative rockers Elements which took longer to spark the senses than many of its companions but alone left expectations of major things from the band. Fair to say it has also proven to be a track which has only grown in thoughts and enjoyment since that first outing, blossoming over persistent listens and now makes for a striking new video single for the Southampton hailing quintet.

Elements Cover Artwork_RingMasterReviewFormed towards the end of 2013, Elements have proceeding to forge a strong live reputation taking in shows with the likes of Bad Rabbits, The Afterparty, DEAD!, Ashes To Angels, The Hype Theory, and Public Service Broadcasting plus tours with They Say Fall, Elessar, As December Falls, and You Know The Drill along the way. The band’s aforementioned second EP, Where We Once Begun sparked eager attention and praise from Powerplay Magazine and Big Cheese among many, with the single Shaman from the Phil Gornell produced encounter leading the way. Continuing to make their name on the live circuit since, Elements now uncages Make It Out Alive on its own to stir up further attention.

The track opens on an alluring guitar jangle and the swiftly impressing voice of Graham Rogers, both quickly joined by a more maudlin bassline amid a sonic shimmer. The band’s rhythmic muscle is soon giving further depth and intensity to the song, the hefty swings of drummer Ash Martin uniting with the darker tones of Max Bakker’s bass as guitarists Ollie Butler and Robin Small cast a web of melodic imagination and dexterity. Captivating with increasing energy, as the backing vocal prowess of Bakker and Butler adds another further impressing texture to the adventurous and cleverly layered encounter, Make It Out Alive grabs ears and imagination alike.

As suggested the song is a grower; quickly pleasing on first listen and growing into a beaut of a proposition over time ensuring anticipation for Elements’ next step takes on certain eagerness.

Juno – Speed Won’t Cut It

Speed Won’t Cut It is a mighty roar to get you to your feet, incite a closed fisted punch of the air, and arouse the spirit to stand defiant and proud. It is also the new irresistible punk incitement from UK punks Juno, a band just bubbling under finding major attention for a while now but now giving it an almighty nudge with their latest four-track EP.

Formed in 2008, the Leeds band sparked keen interest with their debut release We are Juno. A trio initially, they expanded attention and their line-up by the time of second EP Set Sail in 2009. A short break followed before a new head of stream saw the band return with the acclaimed Counting Backwards Causes Explosions EP. It was six tracks of boisterous rock ‘n’ roll which with its 2012 unleashing, drew a host of new fans and led to the band signing with The Animal Farm and the release of its successor Answers a year later, a proposition which eclipsed its predecessor in sound, persuasion, and success. Aligned to a potent live presence and craft which has seen Juno share stages with the likes of Summerlin, ACiD DROP, The Roughneck Riot, Twenty Twenty, Blitz Kids, Forgotten Roots, Adelaide, The Afterparty, Page 44, Failsafe, The Headstart and many more, the foursome of lead vocalist/guitarist Rob Kirk, lead guitarist/vocalist James Duncan, bassist/vocalist Ben Rowe, and drummer Matt Grum are now ready to pounce on full nationwide recognition without stopping at those boundaries and it all starts with the highly tempting Speed Won’t Cut It.

speed_wont_cut_it_RingMasterReviewMerciless hooks and swinging melodies have always been a part of the band’s punk ‘n’ roll offerings but alongside the band’s energy, all have gone up the gears within the new EP. It opens up with new single/video Last Dance, a track which ensures its invitation is quickly taken by feet. It is pure contagious punk rock with a flavoursome touch of AFI to it, though it quickly enforces its own lively character upon ears and imagination. With busy rhythmic bait and fiery guitar enterprise backing up Rob’s anthemically leading vocals, it is gripping stuff and just the start of the voracious revelry to follow.

Will I Be Free steps up next, immediately offering attitude in its riffs and jabbing beats. That continues into the quickly established canvas of jagged guitar tempting and band harmonies, Rob’s voice the ringleader as Ben’s bass prowls deceptive calms before one incendiary chorus. As with the first track, you cannot claim that Juno are re-inventing punk rock but few songs and indeed bands have set ears and emotions alight as effortlessly and rousingly recently as Juno in their first two songs on the EP alone.

Across the tracks the luring of physical participation from voice and body is inevitable and continues with the swinging stroll of Sirens. An arguably less imposing encounter but no weak link in stirring up spirit and thick enjoyment, the song bounds along throwing hooks into a gripping sonic resourcefulness to, like the Pied Piper, tantalise and seduce ears and spirit.

Speed Won’t Cut It ends on its biggest high and the mighty call to arms of Face Our Demons. Like a melodic punk version of Stiff Little Fingers, the track makes thick nudges on thoughts and emotions as its web of guitar tenacity and rhythmic pugnacity aids the song’s inescapable rebel rousing. The track is glorious; an inflammatory slice of intense punk ‘n’ roll which by its unstoppable and virulent finale, is sure to have the listener standing tall and yelling enough is enough to those and things which have taken advantage and more. It certainly did here.

Juno songs have a social and emotionally political aspect to their words which seems to further fire up the sounds around them and in turn the listener. It is a balanced weave though, which makes Juno easily stand out from similarly intense propositions whilst providing a hell of a great time, as proven by the must have Speed Won’t Cut It.

The band’s bio states that this year a line-up change for UK alternative rockers Elements has coincided, maybe sparked, a new sound from the band. With their new EP Where We Once Begun our introduction to the Southampton hailing quintet, we cannot say if the shift is dramatic or subtle, but for sure thanks to five tracks of rousing rock ‘n’ roll, their new release shows it has been a potent one.

Formed in later 2013, Elements quickly made a mark locally with their self-titled debut EP and a live presence which has earned them a reputation as one powerful proposition and seen the band share stages with the likes of Bad Rabbits, The Afterparty, DEAD!, Ashestoangels, The Hype Theory, and Public Service Broadcasting. As mentioned the band has recently undergone a personnel change which, taking the Phil Gornell (While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon, Me Vs Hero) produced Where We Once Begun as our evidence, seems to have lit a fire in the creative belly of the five-piece.

Elements Cover Artwork_RingMaster Review   Once EP opener Shaman storms through ears, rapidly stirring up enjoyment and appetite, the band without being wholly unique, reveals freshness and adventure to their music which just grabs attention and sets them apart from the masses. Fair comparisons have been raised to bands such as early Biffy Clyro, YouMeAtSix, and Don Broco but there is plenty more rippling through songs suggesting something individual to Elements. The first track aligns winey blues wrapped tendrils of guitar with a flirtatious almost electro shuffle which is not too far away from the persuasion Blondie once blossomed. It blends well, the song brewing a virulent tempting to which the skittish beats of Ash Martin and the dark lures of Max Bakker’s bass add their own potent seduction. Vocalist Graham Rogers is just as vibrant and inviting, his powerful tones backed well by those of Bakker and guitarist Ollie Butler who alongside fellow string craftsmen Robin Small spins a web of hooks and melodic spicery to match. It is a contagious riot of sound and energy, and a quite irresistible start to the release.

High Time For Being Free comes next, emerging without a breath from its predecessor with its own brand of sinewy riffs and heavily coaxing grooves ridden by the vocal roar of Rogers. As the first track, it leaps on and bounces through ears with an infectiousness which is muscular and tenaciously anthemic, whilst showing a different shade of colour to the band’s sound. Major surprises, as across the EP, are not open bait yet there is again that fresh air and rich enterprise to it which only lures you in deeper before Plotting Treason Or Saving The World uncages its own chest beating anthem littered with blues honed grooves, merciless hooks, and a sultry air which dynamically ignites in a blaze of the chorus.

Up next is the melodic shimmer and emotive energy of Make It Out Alive which takes release and listener into another new landscape of sound and adventure. Again the imposing strength and sonic muscle of the band is a heady proposal but employed in a new strain of sonic fire and provocative drama. The track does take a little longer to grip but leaves a flavoursome and inventive taste in the mouth before Torchlight brings the EP to a fine close with captivating and aggressive melodies courted by tangy grooves and flaming vocals.

Where We Once Begun is not going to set the alternative rock world back on its heels but it does announce Elements as one of its more exciting emerging bands, so much so that already there is a tingle of anticipation for their future something akin to that felt when Jimmy Eat World first broke.

New Brit alt-rock outfit ‘Elements’ nationally unveil their spanking new EP ‘Where We Once Begun’, on Monday 17th August, through all digital stores.

The Afterparty – Distances

Distances the new mini album from UK rock band The Afterparty is one of those thrilling releases which makes a sizeable and instantly agreeable initial impression but over a brief time it has hooked the emotions, reeled them rigorously in, and locked them away in an inescapable cage of lustful appreciation. It is a formidable beast of an album fusing melodic and alternative rock into one exhilarating riot of sound and passion. It is also an encounter which suggests that The Afterparty is still a work in progress which only adds to the excitement generated by the six track tempestuous stomp.

There is little we can reveal about the band except they consist of vocalist Nic Matthews, guitarists Matt Semmens and Joe Roshier, bassist Dave Sheard, and drummer Matt Russell, were formed in 2010, and have just come off a successful UK tour with We Caught The Castle and Road To Horizon. To be honest their music does all of the talking and Distances certainly shouts loud and vivaciously for them. Produced by Matt O’Grady and bringing previously released singles into a healthy union with new tracks, the self-released album lights up the imagination from start to finish, suggesting that The Afterparty is more than ready to explode into an intensive spotlight; an attention it is not hard to expect coming their way sooner rather than later.

Lost Cause opens things up and is sooner thrusting melody fuelled riffs and grooves with a pleasingly abrasive edge through the ears, The Afterparty 'Distances'vocals smoothing their passage with strong harmonies and expressive intent. The bass of Sheard just as quickly as the guitars grabs attention; its throaty tones a riveting shadow to the scorching enterprise and adventure sculpted by Semmens and Roshier. The at times rumbling rhythms from Russell also steal their fair portion of the scenery; his athletic craft understanding restraint and aggression within a song perfectly. The track continues to leap upon and side step expectations with invention and exhausting endeavour as it provides a thoroughly contagious and invigorating start to the release.

The following Cover Up strides purposely as its makes its entrance before relaxing into a niggling persistence of guitar soon joined by a clean vocal narrative and framing beats courted by the ever dramatic voice of the bass. It is not long before the song is into the pungent stroll of the chorus, infectiousness and climactic emotions a crescendo of irresistible and slightly familiar if indefinable persuasion. Like the first track, it intrigues with its unpredictability within a well-defined body of sound and intent, and like every song a fascinating proposition to surprise and enthral.

By the end of each track you feel you know them as a close friend such their addictive prowess and easily accessible inventiveness, the next up Open Road being no exception. The song romps with sinews an open attraction from its first breath but reins them in as the band explores the emotive landscape cast leading to the ridiculously catchy chorus, another explosive anthemic temptation which this time has a definite Fleetwood Mac to its melodic lures. One of the first singles to draw people into the arms of The Afterparty it is clear to see why with its easy but potent bait.

The band’s latest single When The Lights Go Out initially is a gentle walk with elegant stroking melodies though that bass once more adds virulently tempting shadows. It is a strong if under whelming start but within a minute things turn into a furnace of passion and inflammatory energy which simply awakens the song, musically, vocally, and in heart. It is an absorbing and anthemic fire, guitars igniting the air and rhythms caging all of the passion of the vocals and sonic endeavour within their commanding presence masterfully.

The outstanding Liar Liar comes next, the track thrusting its almost antagonistic intent and muscular body at the ears with riffs barracking and grooves entwining the senses whilst rhythms lay down their own hungry bruising. It is a glorious start with Matthews roaring as he rides their charge, subsequently bringing a harmonic union with the band when the song nestles into a less forceful but similarly imposing stance. It along with its predecessor discovers the perfect union of reserve and ferocity, restraint and fiery emotive expulsions, both telling you all you need to know about The Afterparty and the reasons you should watch them closely. The closing Within The Looking Glass only adds to that evidence with its drama and intensive emotion not forgetting immense musical quality.

It is hard not to be excited by Distances, especially as despite how mighty it is the suggestion that The Afterparty is still in the earlier stages of their creative journey is strong. It is another step in their ascent to eagerly relish and breed a hunger over but easy to feel that it is just the beginning of many very notable and inspirational horizons ahead which only increases thrilled anticipation.
