The Bottom Line – I Still Hate You

With the British outfit just finishing off a successful tour of China and still reaping high praise for their I Still Hate You EP released this past January pop punkers The Bottom Line spark off another seriously busy period by uncaging its title track as their new single.

The London quartet is poised to hit Canada and the US on tour alongside Simple Plan before undertaking a set of already sold out UK dates with US outfit Waterparks, all over the next month and a half. It is a period echoing an eight week period last year which, again with the Canadian band on their World Tour, saw The Bottom Line travel across 14 countries. I Still Hate You is the perfect spark to set things off, an attention grabbing slice of what is making the band one of the most potent propositions on the independent scene.

Unerringly catchy but with an irritability which swiftly gets its claws into the imagination, the single instantly has the hips swinging and body bouncing in tandem with its own aural animation. Spiky riffs infest the imagination as they spring from the initial melodic glaze cast by lead guitarist Tom Newton, their almost grouchy presence backed by the biting beats of Matt Bicker. The throaty grumble of Max Ellis’ bass adds to the pleasure and a predacious edge tempered nicely by the infectious vocal presence of guitarist Callum Amies, his inviting tones backed by the equally warm tones of Ellis.

As the track continues to boisterously stroll, offering plenty of enticing twists and turns along the way, a Hagfish like hue roars as a Blink 182 scent teases; flavouring when added to the band’s own creative tenacity has the body leaping and an appetite for move slavering.

As the last, this year has been and continues to be a busy one for The Bottom Line, I Still Hate You showing why it is also being a highly successful one.

The Bottom Line – Pull Me Out

Ahead of their new EP, I Still Hate You due for release at the beginning of 2017, British pop punksters The Bottom Line have released a rousing teaser in the shape of their new single. Pull Me Out is a seriously catchy and boisterous affair which tops off a rather eventful and successful year for the London band.

Formed in 2011, The Bottom Line has increasingly made their presence known within the UK pop punk scene with the past year seeing the outfit release two well received singles in Insecure and the-bottom-line-i-still-hate-you-art _RingMasterReviewPlaylist, open for Bowling For Soup in Ireland, play Facedown, be part of sold shows as main support to Room 94, and venture through fourteen countries alongside Simple Plan. Now to end the year on a high, we have Pull Me Out, a track which takes no time in accosting ears with spirit raising enterprise.

From its first breath, melody bound riffs and rampant rhythms enjoyably impose, their instant catchiness just the prelude to the song’s broader body of feisty textures and inescapable infectiousness. With strong vocals egging on and potently sharing the eager heart of the song, it is soon a tenacious union of sinewy basslines, swinging beats, and a host of tempting hooks and biting riffs.

It is probably fair to say that the song weaves its body with familiar spices and textures, their recent French-Canadian tour mates springing to mind with ease, but there is a freshness and distinctive zeal to the encounter which reeks of more distinctive promise and simply sparks an inquisitively hungry appetite for the band’s sound and future propositions, starting with the upcoming I Still Hate You EP.

A foot to the floor rocker of a track, the single is the sign that 2017 may very well exceed this in the band’s rise.

If I Die Today – Cursed

There is a torment in the heart of the new album from Italian post-hardcore band If I Die Today, and a tempestuous air which lives up to any ideas inspired by the name Cursed. There is also an invasive and at times punishing darkness and emotional trespass coursing through the veins of the encounter but equally an imagination loaded, gripping enterprise which ensures it easily stands out against any other similarly sculpted and bred offerings. Cursed is destined not to be for everyone, and will frighten many off with its searing intensity and emotion  but there is no escaping that it announces If I Die Today as one of the more fascinating incitements in the post and hardcore scene.

If I Die Today emerged in Mondovì in 2007 and by the early months of the following year had released their self-titled debut album through Wynona Records. The release enabled the quintet to tour their homeland and share stages with numerous bands, that success reinforced by the You Are Alone EP in 2009, again unveiled to strong and positive reactions. It was the same with second album Liars the following year, its potent presence luring greater attention and acclaim cross Europe, the band following it with shows across Italy, Hungary, France, and the UK as well as playing alongside artists such as Sum 41, Offspring, No Use For A Name, Simple Plan, Face To Face, Taking Back Sunday at Bologna’s Independent Days Festival. The band’s workload and reputation continued to grow as 2012 saw the release of the Postcards From The Abyss EP and If I Die Today playing with bands like Every Time I Die, Good Riddance, and H2O as well as going on a tour taking in Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and venues back home. Since then more venues and countries have been scorched by the band’s sound, before and after the recording of Cursed last year, which with its worldwide release through Sliptrick Records sets a new chapter in the rise of If I Die Today.

image1_RingMaster Review     It’s opening handful of seconds are an inviting temptation but in no time Jesus becomes a searing sonic wind blowing over thickly jabbing rhythms and coming loaded with spicy hook lined enterprise from the guitars. Vocalist Marco Fresia roars just as swiftly and intensely in the tempest whilst the caustic breath and heart of the track is perfectly tempered by the magnetic lure of the throaty bassline from Morgan Ferrua and the controlled rhythmic dance cast by drummer Davide Gallo. There is no escape from the sheer energy and emotional turmoil of the song though or its flesh scarring sound with its virulent onslaught as gripping as it is intimidating.

In the sheer wind tunnel like delivery of the song there are essences of bands like Kabul Golf Club, KEN mode, and Statues in its creative adventure and tenacity, a potent mix continuing in Adams which is another instant arousal of attention and appetite with thumping bold beats and bracing vocals. Settling down a touch once established, though still a bruising confrontation, the guitars of Antonio Aresu and Michele Testa spin a web of raw aggression and intricate sonic seducing whilst the bass creates another deliciously alluring and individual line of bait. As its predecessor, the song is an epidemic of punishing and invigorating incitement, pure abrasive adventure to get your teeth into and drool over before it fluidly flows into Lucifer and its own exhausting tempest of scarring emotion and increasingly volatile and creative ferocity.

Through Patrick and Elisabeth, band and album continues to wither flesh and create emotional tension but again with plenty of fresh twists and adventure to their canvases. The first of the enthralling pair comes in a hostility lit slow shuffle with numerous expulsions of energy and vocal angst but also tendrils of flirtatious grooves and addiction breeding rhythms. There is no compromising with an If I Die Today proposal and no chance of being subjected to anything mundane or predictable as shown by this and its successor. Elisabeth maybe offers less uniqueness within the album than other tracks but it too is ripe with seriously enticing slithers and caresses of sonic ingenuity and melodic seducing, all resulting in less than two minutes of exciting violation.

Faustus borders on barbarous with its bestial weight of sound and energy but counters it with a tapestry of punkish hooks and twisted sonic imagination that simply whips the passions into a maelstrom of lust whilst The Ancient Mariner prowls the psyche and taunts ears with its fusion of noise rock and punk in stormy hardcore antagonism. Both tracks are glorious, adding their full thrilling and inventive weight to the unrelenting persuasion of the album.

An even fiercer punk venom courses through Vincent, the song openly revealing the inspirations of the band with its Every Time I Die meets Converge like onslaught. There is plenty more in the depths and brutish body of the song of course, lots to get greedy over before the album’s title track gives Cursed a whole new climate to explore. The band is tagged as post-hardcore but the closer is the one song which perfectly fits that billing, the rest a wonderful bedlam of styles and flavours. With a blackened and frosty air to its invasive ambience over hauntingly cold scenery, the track is an inhospitable drift through a dark and emotionally tortuous landscape compellingly bringing the album to a highly provocative and startling end.

Instantly gripping, Cursed only gets more powerful, persuasive, and emotionally penetrating with very listen. It certainly lingers and leaves scars in its wake too, but only to please and make demanding reasons to go back into its merciless majesty. If I Die Today is one of the truly exciting bands in the post and neat hardcore scene, Cursed shows exactly why.

This Legend – It’s In The Streets

With the pedigree of its members, expectations for the debut album from This Legend were demanding but also wanting to be seriously surprised. After a strong but underwhelming start, the LA quartet not only fed all wants whilst utilising familiar pop punk ingredients in a series of relentlessly contagious encounters, but sculpted a continuous adventure of unique and gripping twists across the release. The result is an album which, like an old friend instinctively and continually ignites the sweet spot of desires of the genre whilst creating brand new and captivating temptations. It’s In The Streets is a gem of a proposition which does surprise and find its own character but also provides that recognisable essence which turns every song into an instantaneously bordering on anthemic lure.

Formed by ex- Yellowcard members Longineu Parsons III (drums) and Ben Harper (guitar), the former leaving the band earlier this year and reuniting with his friend who left their former outfit nine years earlier, This Legend was soon bulging with experience and talent as the pair brought in vocalist/guitarist Chris Castillo (Stanley and the Search), and bassist Steven Neufeld (Hey Mike!) to complete the line-up. Signing with Cyber Tracks, an LA based record label owned by El Hefe (of NOFX) and his wife Jen Abeyta, the band soon set about recording their debut with producer Sam Pura (The Story So Far, State Champs). In what has already been a busy year for the new band, This Legend now unveil its opening shot and you can only surmised that the attention and workload is only going to get more hectic as its virulent charms spreads their pleasure.

As mentioned the album did not exactly blow ears and thoughts away at first though opener Lyrics With My Pen certainly strides in on a rhythmic temptation which instantly grips attention. It is a dramatic start which loses its potency ruffas the song relaxes into an accomplished and confident stroll of warm riffs and spicy hooks stroked by the excellent vocals of Castillo. The track does little wrong to be fair but equally just provides what so many other genre offerings seem to, something enjoyable and engaging but nothing out of the ordinary, even with the impressive craft of Parsons III pounding away throughout. Subsequently though the track turns out to be an appetiser for greater things which are hinted at by the following Feeling Like I Should and fully triggered from Holiday From Crazy onwards. The first of the pair is a warm and radiant persuasion, a lively croon where vocals and guitar provide a colourful emotive portrait from which the chorus finds a rich infection to spark the imagination. It is the little twists of chords and hooks though which intrigue and ignite the song; elements explored even more from hereon in as its successor takes over. The third song flies at ears with melodies and rhythms pumped and creative tenacity aflame. There is a spicy mix of early Green Day and Simple Plan to the song but the rich hues of sonic adventure and rhythmic drama are the riveting and ear exciting endeavour which makes a great song into something special.

The album’s title track with its emotive depth and vocal expression thrills next, rhythms intimidating bait within the rawer but no less seductive landscape of the energetic and controlled blaze. Again there is a dramatic edge to vocals and sound which elevates every syllable and note into something unpredictable, fresh, and exhilarating; the track a swift peak emulating its predecessor but in turn matched and exceeded by the volatile stomp that is My City. Wonderfully exhausting and inescapably contagious, the track is a highly charged punk antagonist flooded with fiery melodic hooks and teases within another knee weakening, passions lighting rhythmic assault. To seal its dominance on the album, it also provides a mouth-watering change of gait and hook clad predation, a twist which actually rings a bell of undefined influences but puts the icing on a flavoursome chunk of pop punk.

     Skin & Bones comes next and provides an impassioned stroll within bracing riff laced scenery speared by again perfectly barbed hooks, Castillo especially impressive and engrossing vocally, whilst Life Pushes Hard dances with ears through tangy melodies over a feisty shuffle of rhythms and bass temptation. Both tracks keep ears and appetite greedy, the first especially raising a new hunger before the pair of I Deserve Better and Moving On add their creative spoils to the feverish revelry. The first of the two excels with its spiky riffs and wiry grooves and the second through its tantalising weave of emotive melodies and vocal reflection. Though it lacks the extra something to flirt with the passions, the song’s fresh enterprise and skilled structure only leaves satisfaction grinning.

A highly agreeable if safe offering comes next with Regrets, a song which does not venture too far from pop punk limits, unlike other songs on the album, but with vocals and rhythms especially finding essences of the distinct hues veining previous songs it unreservedly pleases before the urgently catchy Get Fast takes over to cast its own feet inciting contagion. Its rawer tone makes a tasty complement to the breezier breath of the previous song and sets up the aural theatre of final track Josh Lights A Fire perfectly, the closing song if not quite in sound definitely having that dramatic essence which Fall Out Boy embrace.

The song is a terrific end to an excellent encounter, a release which stands fully alone from the past adventures of This Legend’s personnel. Actually It’s In The Streets suggests that the band has the potential to eclipse their band’s previous endeavours, time will tell but more treats like this will go down nicely.

A New Day – Forever Tonight

Though a bit of a mixed bag, Forever Tonight the second EP from UK melodic rock band A New Day, offers more than enough to ensure the quartet is well worth keeping a close eye on. Consisting of three tracks which vary in success but all showing a potent promise to healthily flirt with the imagination, the release is a solid and intriguing encounter. It is not going to set the melodic rock/pop punk world alight but does give it something new to contemplate and take a determined interest in.

Hailing from Basildon, A New Day formed in 2013 taking inspirations from the likes of Blink 182, All Time Low, Simple Plan, and Jimmy Eat World into their own evolving sound. Honing their sound, the band took its time before hitting stages and subsequently lighting up a torrent of venues across the South East of the UK. Debut EP Now It’s Our Turn made a swift impression with fans and the underground scene which Forever Tonight can only reinforce. Made up of Chris Tunnicliffe (vocals/rhythm guitar), Glen Hearn (lead guitar), and brothers Scott (backing vocals/bass) and Sam Johnson (drums), A New Day is at that point where they are ready to catch the ears of the country, though whether the new EP is the key is arguable but you sense it is on the cards at some point.

Forever Tonight opens with its lead track, which is accompanied by a video, but also its weakest proposition. Boyfriend opens with a coaxing melodic guitar expression which instantly engage ears but in many ways that is as good as it A New Day Cover Artworkgets, its reoccurring lure the potent call within an otherwise limping song. From a dull production to unsure vocals, muted rhythms to a relatively lifeless breath, the song fails to find its ignition in presence and colour. It is surprising in many ways as the guitar weaves of Hearn are inventive and the craft of the band open but there is little which sparks and up against the stronger more vibrant songs which follow, the track is underwhelming.

That disappointment is soon forgotten as Faith In Me swiftly romps in ears. From a vocal draw, the song is soon a punchy stride of pop punk energy and melodic enterprise with eager rhythms and engagingly spiky hooks. The song is like night and day to its predecessor, though again the production is a dulled touch to the life and potency of the song. Harmonies add promising hues to the track as it strolls engagingly whilst rhythms and a deliciously shadowed bassline flirt with the imagination. It is a strong and rampant slice of pop rock which pushes the potential of the band to the fore as it excites ears, though it too is left in the shadow of final track Call You Mine (I Don’t Want To).

Starting with a blaze of guitar and a potent rhythmic lure as the strong tones of Tunnicliffe croon out the narrative, the track makes an impressive entrance elevated by another rich and throaty bass roaming. The song does not have the fevered urgency of the previous song but feels livelier and melodically hungry at its core. The guitar weaves of Hearn again impress with their enterprise whilst vocally Tunnicliffe and the band find their strongest blend and suasion yet. The best track on the release, it is a highly satisfying end to an encounter which at its start left more doubts than answers about its promise.

Whether A New Day is able to grab the UK in its melodic hands with Forever Tonight is debatable but taking the last pair of songs and especially Call You Mine (I Don’t Want To) as suggestive evidence, it is hard not to expect the four-piece to set tongues wagging far and wide some when ahead. They certainly know how to keep ears happy with a resourceful blend of pop punk/rock and that is always a good base to grow from.

Ascending Brit-rock foursome, ‘A New Day’, unveil their mouth-watering new EP ‘Forever Tonight’, out Monday 4th August through all national stores.
