Emphatic – Another Life

Nestling potently and comfortably amongst the likes of Three Days Grace, Alterbridge, Chevelle, and Creed, US rock band Emphatic step forward once again to light up ears and thoughts with their new album Another Life. It is not a release which exactly sets down new markers or offers dramatically unique ventures within its eleven emotively powerful offerings but certainly it is one which leaves a strong canvas of infectious and richly rewarding musical narratives for senses and imagination to eagerly indulge in. The successor to the acclaimed Damage of 2011, the new album provides an appealing dose of heart sculpted highly accomplished rock intensity and passion.

Formed in 2004 by guitarist Justin McCain, Emphatic has had a steady and constantly ascending emergence, first leaving strong marks through their self-titled debut album of 2005 and three years later the Goodbye Girl EP. It was the release of Damage though which triggered a new depth of attention and awareness, not forgetting acclaim around the band. Live too with the sharing of stages with the likes of Stone Temple Pilots, Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin, Flyleaf, Five Finger Death Punch, Theory of a Deadman, Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry, and Adelitas Way, the band’s reputation has grown and brought an enthused audience to their excellently crafted and energetically honed sounds.

The release of the last album was followed by the departure of vocalist Patrick Wilson who suffered a career halting injury when he fractured his larynx, and with also rhythm guitarist Lance Dowdle and bassist Alan Larson leaving, Emphatic was facing uncertain times. Eventually though McCain and drummer Patrick Mussack enlisted Jesse Saint (Scum of the Earth/The Autumn Offering) on bass and Bill Hudson (Cellador) on guitar whilst the frontman spot was taken by Toryn Green, the former vocalist of Fuel and touring lead vocalist for Apocalyptica. The new blood and energy gave a new lease of life to the band it is fair to say and certainly has combined to create in Another Life, their finest moment yet and a thoroughly enjoyable and persistently satisfying encounter.

The Omaha, Nebraska based band immediately works on the senses with the opening persuasion of Life After Anger. The song is a keen Album Coverand emotional caress with the vocals of Green taking little time to impress amongst sturdy beats and sinew driven riffs. The melodic heat and expressive voice of the track equally lays a reflective enticing lure and with an element of Seether to it, the song makes an excellent lead into the heart of the release which is straight away backed up by Time is Running Out. Again there is a familiarity to the track, something which applies to the album as a whole, but equally there is a flourish and intensity which marks it as Emphatic bred. The addictive sonic groove and continuing to impress vocals and supportive harmonies capture the imagination alongside a solid resource of invention and enterprise which parades across the song to bring forth a strong appetite for album and band.

The following Lights makes a gentle coaxing with its first breath before adding a little more urgency to its still restrained and emotional beckoning. The song than settles into a provocative and intensive narrative which without matching the heights just set still draws thoughts and emotions into its embrace whilst stretching the variety within the album, a melodic diversity given another flame by next up Some Things Never Die. The song similarly misses previous plateaus set but with a melodramatic touch of keys and tenderly preying call of riffs and bass, emerges to give its share of strong satisfaction and another string to the album’s aural bow.

Both The Choice and the title track bring the album up to its earlier heights, the first with an expectation feeding slice of rock but one which ensures they have a skilled and potent meal whilst the second entwines a delicious groove around an imaginative and fiery melodic painting of contagious adventure and evocative craft. The best song on Another Life, it leads passions by the hand into a sweltering dance of reflection bred, melody soaked colour within captivating passionate scenery.

As tracks like the stylish I Don’t Need You and the ballad Louder Than Love unveil their varying temptations and the fevered Forbidden You provokes the imagination, Emphatic continue to provide a thoroughly engaging presence. The three songs again are slightly adrift of the biggest highlights of the release whilst being soaked in a sound which arguably many bands have explored previously, but each nevertheless creates a persuasion and invitation that is hard to refuse or not want to accompany again.

Closing with the greatly pleasing Take Your Place, a track like many with an anthemic lure to its chorus and skilled bait to its melodic craft, and the lead single from Another Life in the shape of the adrenaline fuelled Remember Me, the album at the end of the day is an absorbing and openly enjoyable encounter. Superbly crafted and impressively delivered, Emphatic has brought a proposition which leaves you fully satisfied and with an increased appetite for their offering, a meal you know and feel safe with but also one filled with little spices of invention that keeps it fresh and daring.

Interview with Comron Fouladi of Athel

Though there is a strong and decent wave of melodic punk bands around there are not many which stand out from the crowd consistently. One exception comes in the vibrant and unique shape of Chicago band Athel. Recently the band dropped their debut album Open Your Eyes To Society, its impressive tracks a blaze of vibrant and completely infectious rock/punk sounds. Needing to know about this aural contagion and the band itself we had the great fortune and opportunity to fire off questions to bassist Comron Fouladi to learn more.

Hi Comron and welcome to The Ringmaster Review, many thanks for talking to us,

How did you all meet and when did Athel emerge?

I met Cristian in middle school and Justin just from the local band scene we were in. I introduced the two.

Who are the biggest influences to you as a musician and maybe for the Athel sound?

My favorite band of all time and inspiration is CKY.

In our review of your great debut album Open Your Eyes To Society we said the band and release was one to stand out from what seems plenty of good new punk bands but generally uniformal in sound. What is it you have which you feel sets you apart?

The CD doesn’t stick to one mold. It’s not cookie cutter music. One song will be really punk or metal, then we have something like a classic rock song come then something like modern music mixed with 90s vocal melodies.

Did the band evolve into something more than maybe you expected or reach to where you exactly envisaged?

Definitely, we started working on some of these songs when we were first starting out. I was hoping to build a local following and have some fun with some small tours. I didn’t know we would later be signing a deal and releasing them in stores worldwide. I think my kids will all think I’m a liar with all the tour stories I will tell them.

As we have already mentioned it tell us about the album and your hopes going in to its creation?

I was hoping to put out something different, I don’t think there has been many good bands to come up in the past few years and I’ve just been really pissed about modern hits so we tried to create something different haha.

How long did Open Your Eyes To Society take to make?

We started writing this in 2009. We started recording in November 2010 and finished Feb 2012.

Was it already primarily composed and written before going into the studio or grew within those creative walls?

All the songs were done before the studio with multiple demos other then These are the Times, Kara’s Carousel, and Me, Myself, and I.

How does the songwriting work within the band?

Justin will write a guitar part and vocal melody, then bring it to the table and it evolves into a full song with many ideas front here.

What predominantly inspires your songs and lyrics?

Appreciation of life is something we always talk about in our music. So many people say they want to kill themselves all the time but really the chance of life happening is a trillion to 1. You’ve came this far and are now alive might as well try and make it the best you can.

The album is your first release since signing with Mortal Music. How did the link up with the label come about?

From building a local following of 500+ kids at every hometown show and then spending 300 dates on the road one year helped as well meant a few labels took attention to Athel but I felt Mortal was right and I’m extremely happy to work with those guys.

We called the album…Mildly aggressive, vaguely intrusive, and wholly infectious…fair comment?

Definitely! We wanted this album to be our angsty album.

You previously released a couple of EPs which drew strong acclaim too but how has your sound changed if at all since starting out?

Our sound hasn’t changed much just the writing sounds like it has matured.

The album marks the band as one which is intent on giving full pleasure and riotous fun, one imagines your live shows are exactly the same?

I’ve always been a fan of putting on the best show possible. If you ever come to an Athel show I promise you won’t be let down!

What makes a great show for you?

Seeing the people unite at a concert to have fun and enjoy life. It’s an escape from the modern bullshit we have to deal with.

You have shared stages with the likes of Chris Cornell, Gwar, CKY, and The Audition. Anyone you would sell your grannies to play with?

I would love to tour with Escape the Fate. They have always been so awesome and our fans love each other.

Any chance we might see you guys over this side of the big water in the near future?

I’m hoping in 2013. We need to be there soon!

What is next for Athel?

Rob Zombies guitar player Riggs has a new band called Scum of the Earth, we will be doing an East coast tour with them August 31st through almost all of September.

Cold Rush: Disclosing The Vicious Seeds

With an album imminent German industrial metalers Cold Rush have made a mightily firm case for great anticipation and impatience for the forthcoming release with their new maxi single Disclosing The Vicious Seeds. Varied, stirring, and infectious the two track single shows the returning band has evolved their sound into a harder and more addictive proposition which invites, entraps, and exhilarates the ear and beyond for a deep satisfaction.

Disclosing The Vicious Seeds is a fore taste for the new album AmoKKoma, the follow-up to debut The Illness of 2009. The years have seen Cold Rush sharing stages with the likes of Megadeth, Last Instance, Mono Inc., Debauchery, Equlibrium, and Suidakra across Germany and the band riling up Europe with a tour alongside Kreator, their sounds finding an easy fit to metal, rock, and industrial hearts. The two years since their first album has seen the sound of the Munich band as previously mentioned, expand into a more eagerly catchy and powerful beast, maybe inspired by the addition of new vocalist Matthias Kupka (Suidakra and Emergency Gate), who brings a fiercer and darker crunch to the vocals and energy. Their sound is grounded in the industrial bands from the nineties, addictive and challenging with a steely intent to provoke and melodically corrupt, the new single the first result.

Opening song Daily Crime (Second Edition) opens on sparkling synth melodies spotting the ear and an intrusive grind behind a sampled vocal. Intriguing from the off it soon breaks out into a wave of smothering density and metal forcefulness tempered with warm and compulsive melodies. The vocals of Kupka are harsh and intimidating backed up by sounds from guitarists K.L. and Wutzl that are incisive, and rhythms from bassist Ramirez and drummer Flo which steal away the breath with their dark command. The spreading electro synths sweep through and over every sense with the song overall a piece which carries an ominous atmospheric darkness.

Second song White Z is a fuller rock/metal track bringing a mix of the likes of Rammstein in league with Scum Of The Earth. The track stomps across the senses with a might and intensity that raises pulse rates and draws air punching fists. The bass of Ramirez growls and prowls the song wonderfully adding spite to an already formidable energy and attack from the guitars and the muscular vocals of Kupka.  The new aggressive yet contagious element to their sound has brought something new out of the band that is impressive, their craft at bringing their electro and melodic skills into a seamless meld with the harder intensity very rewarding for the ear.

Disclosing The Vicious Seeds is an excellent forerunner to the new full length release currently being completed by Cold Rush and if there is one complaint it is that this single has now made the wait for their album  even more impatient.
