Deference – False Awakening

Increasingly compelling, False Awakening is the new EP from British metallers Deference. A maelstrom of ravenous textures and flavours caught in an equally imposing web of emotion, the release not only forcibly pleases ears but also suggests this is a band with the potential to be a big part of the UK metal scene.

Coming from Southampton, Deference weave in inspirations from the likes of Architects, Northlane, Periphery, and Oh Sleeper into their tapestry of melody rich metalcore with djent and progressive metal tendencies. The quintet has been climbing the ladder with a rapid ascent in recent times, the release of 2015 debut EP XXXVII and live successes alongside bands such as Rolo Tomassi, Napoleon, The Hell, and Shields as well as a European Tour with True Lie all increasing their reputation. False Awakening is a creative echo of an outfit ready to break into national recognition, the next unavoidable step for a band beginning to make their potent mark.

The release opens with Scavengers. A steely shimmer initially coaxes ears, senses strapping riffs soon following as rhythms and guitars grumble around the plaintive vocal roar of Rob Lea. That djent styled essence is equally as swift infecting song and satisfaction, the guitars of Matt Dennison and Jonathan Prince creating a spiky attitude and touch in their emerging weave of enterprise. Strapped to the muscular grouch of Shaun Kirtland’s bass and the animosity loaded swings of drummer Mike Hill, the track is a formidable introduction to the EP; not necessarily unique but relentlessly exhilarating.

The might start slips away to be replaced by the instantly ravenous Insomnia; its immediate wall of sonic trespass the bed for melodic and technical dexterity to blossom. It is an intriguing mixture which takes longer to ignite the imagination than its predecessor’s tempest but grows into a rich captivation especially as raw and aggression vocal contemplations are joined by an impressive clean delivery from Lea, Dennison adding his potent vocal backing throughout. Persistently turbulent across its vociferous landscape, a tempestuous climate equally as open in the track’s mellower melancholy thick yet stark moments, the song has the imagination as gripped as ears throughout.

New single Departure follows, growing from another solemn but engaging melody equipped peace with keys colouring its atmospheric questioning before again vocal and sonic volatility takes hold and seize the moment. As another maze of sound and invention descends, Deference reinforce the potency of their  presence and creative dexterity, the song shifting through numerous cycles all capturing the imagination if again with increasing persuasion rather than an immediate one though indeed its first listen or two leaves pleasure alive.

The EP’s title track has an almost carnal air and character as it ravages the senses straight away, an antipathy which rather than diminishes simply expands its scope as clean vocals and melodic endeavour gets involved in the volcanic explosion. The track is superb, unpredictable yet with plenty of familiar spices only adding to its impressive blaze of sound and emotive exploration. Rabid and composed, vicious and seductive, the track is a collision of extremes and imagination breeding a mighty storm again fusing varied metal bred hues in its cataclysmic squall.

The release closes with Become Death Part 2, an initially gentle melodic romancing of the senses around a vocal sample. As destructive elements fall upon the calm, the song is fallout of corroded beauty, an epochal epilogue to the EP’s themes looking at “a man-made apocalyptic world.”

The buzz is that Deference is ready to take their place to the fore of the UK metal scene; whether it is sooner or later it is expected success backed up by False Awakening and its striking contents.

Abandcalledboy – George Best In Show / Paul Simon’s Daily Routine

You know when you are on to a winner when you realise your feet have already joined in the devilry before thoughts and emotions have caught on. In such cases there is an instinctive lure which digs into the primal essence of what incites personal tastes and musical passions, and so it is with the new single from Belfast noise/indie rock band Abandcalledboy. The two track bewitchment simply took over the body, then the imagination and emotions. It did not ask for permission or make an initial request but just stole its booty whilst providing a seriously compelling and contagious introduction to its creators.

Though our first meeting with them, Abandcalledboy has been making a stir in the Irish music scene for a while, spreading it around the UK at times. 2014 saw the release of their self-titled debut EP which earned the band keen attention across the Irish music press whilst the self-produced video for the song Cliff Richard captured strong interest and praise from Therapy? guitarist/vocalist Andy Cairns. Shows with the likes of Rolo Tomassi, And So I Watch You From Afar, and The Futureheads amongst many has only reinforced the emergence and growing stature of the band but now it is the turn of their new single to nudge a new and broader awareness and appetite for their sounds, and it is fair to say that already George Best In Show / Paul Simon’s Daily Routine has made one new conquest.

Abandcalledboy - George Best - Paul Simon - ABCB 2015 Promo 2The single is the first release from Abandcalledboy as a quartet and shows a shift in direction of sound from the foursome of Ryan Burrowes, Adam Smith, Mark Finnegan, and newest member Chris Ryan. George Best In Show is the first to step forward and in the matter of two breaths has ears and appetite enslaved with its almost voracious rhythmic shuffle. The swinging beats border on salacious and are irresistibly inviting as the surrounding tempting of guitar brings a B-52s like teasing to its melodic mischief. It is not the only thing worming away under the skin and into the psyche though, a sonic bluster erodes the senses with its caustic noise whilst a dark menacing bass tone simply adds to the addictive tempest. It sounds like it is a threatening start but it is the complete opposite, in fact it is a gloriously captivating stirring up of air and listener which levels out into a more stable though still agitated landscape once warm vocals join the affair. The song continues to impress and inescapably seduce, slowly raising its intensity and sonic causticity again towards a blistering finale. There seems to be hints of bands like XTC, Baddies, and Swound! in the song but spices in something predominantly unique.

Second track Paul Simon’s Daily Routine is a more emotionally and physically settled proposition, though again its rhythmic side comes with a volatile nature, especially in the drums. The raw radiance of keys and guitars is a flirtatious dance bridging the dark hues of bass and the agitated beats of Ryan to the harmonic caresses of the vocals and acidic melodies. Fuzzy and mesmeric, noisy and transfixing, the song explores a different kind of chaotic adventure compared to its openly twisted companion, a more temperate brew bristling with sonic enterprise within an imagination lit climate.

Abandcalledboy might have escaped attention from a great many of us until now but that slow awakening will surely change for everyone else with the unveiling of George Best In Show / Paul Simon’s Daily Routine. It thrusts the band onto the widest noise rock map with forceful energy and invention whilst suggesting there is even greater, template shaping things to come. We cannot wait!

Kill The Silence – Self Titled

Inspirations to UK band Kill The Silence are said to include the likes of Lower Than Atlantis, Bring Me The Horizon, and Reuben and it is the latter which most comes to mind as the band’s debut release sets about inciting an excited appetite for their sounds. The self-titled EP from the Leeds quartet is an explosive roar of imagination and fierce energy with potential oozing from every idea and twist whilst an already nurtured enterprise simply floods the four-track rampage. Release and band straight away stirred up a bloom of pleasure in ears and emotions but now after numerous excursions across its raging sonic rapids it is fair to say that responses offered now come with a healthy dose of lust.

Kill The Silence emerged in mid-2013 and it was not long before their ferocious mix of alternative rock, post-hardcore, and melodic metal was earning invites to play shows and appearances at festivals. The time since forming has seen the foursome of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jason Walsh, lead guitarist Sam Rickerby, bassist Jack Townend, and drummer Reece Cockayne play with bands such as Fearless Vampire Killers, Blitz Kids, Max Raptor, The Family Ruin, Attention Thieves, Ashestoangels, Yashin, Mallory Knox, The Defiled, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Rolo Tomassi across the north of the UK. Now the whole of Britain is their target and it is easy to suggest that their first EP just might be all it needs to push the band into the broadest national spotlight.

Kill The Silence Cover Art     The EP opens up with the band’s current single Get Out, Get Out! and swiftly has ears engaged in a blend of riffs and melodies. It is a raw introduction mellowing out with the clean vocals of Walsh who in turn reveals his prowess at offering raucous throat bred squalls and angst hued harmonies. His delivery is nothing less than impressive, something applying to all elements of the band to be fair. Bleeding addictive citric grooves and disorientating rhythms, the track continues to explore a widening expanse of rock music for a potent start to the EP, though the song is the ‘weakest’ on the EP for personal tastes with the major excitement and might of Kill The Silence coming in the following trio of tracks.

Darling is next and from a muffled rhythmic shuffle explodes into an intimidating blaze of sonic ferocity and vocal hostility, both soaked in instant anthemic persuasion. The track proceeds to lurch and scythe through the senses with its volatile animosity and virulent contagion, that Reuben spicing a loud whisper in the tempest of punk and metal with melodically lined rock ‘n’ roll. The searing and psyche seeded hooks of the song are irresistible on top of this whilst the sheer energy and passion of the band is fuel to its voracious fire and indeed ire.

The major inciting of ears and emotions continues just as forcibly with S.S.D.D, its opening prowl of low key but suggestive riffs courted by a nagging single-minded bait of beats. There is a menace and intensity to the track from its first breath too, one slowly brewing up a storm which erupts in a web of riffs and cantankerous rhythms driven by rawer but no less magnetic vocals. The muscularly swinging beats of Cockayne dominate the sound in some ways, a very small niggle over the production there, but it only adds to the confrontation and explosive character of the outstanding song. Though again openly infectious, the song is a predator, from voice to beats, riffs to barbarous hooks, it looks to challenge the senses as it takes the EP up another level.

It is a step soon outshone by the best song on the release in Chapter II. A waspish groove almost instantly emerges to seduce and bind ears and appetite, springing from a bracing bluster of guitar and bass aligned to again wickedly swung beats. It is a toxic and intoxicating lure buffeted by another strong variety of vocals and the tempestuous heart of the dirty and ravenous song. Drawing on the most metal honed and carnivorous aspects of the band’s sound, the track equally entangles catchy pop rock and melodic ferocity into its tempest, creating a song the Reuben boys would have been more than proud of.

The EP is a seriously exciting and attention stealing introduction to Kill The Silence, the first of many impressive and incendiary offerings ahead we suspect as they do indeed spark a pungent nationwide spotlight on their blistering sound and presence.

Taking from a collection of influences, spanning from Reuben and Lower Than Atlantis to Bring Me The Horizon, Kill The Silence come at you from Leeds and nationally release their self-titled debut EP on Monday 20th April through all digital stores.

Reece Cockayne (Drums), Kill The Silence were officially formed during the middle part of 2013. Show invites and festival appearances soon began to take shape. To date, the foursome have played extensively through the north, rounding up support slots and festival appearances with Fearless Vampire Killers, Blitz Kids, Max Raptor, The Family Ruin, Attention Thieves, Ashestoangels, Yashin, Mallory Knox, The Defiled, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Rolo Tomassi. The hi-octane rockers have also picked coverage from BBC Introducing and internet radio, and have been featured as Kerrang!’s Local Heroes.

The time is now ripe for Kill The Silence to step up and reach out to a national audience, and the band have the right tools in the shape of their new EP. The juggernaut rhythms and soaring chorus of their current single ‘Get Out! Get Out!’ start up the record, and it’s a perfect introduction for the wiry quartet. The punchy grimy hardcore of ‘Darling’ is next up and it’s an engrossing slab of adrenaline fuelled punkcore. The pounding onslaught of ‘S.S.D.D.’ continues to batter your eardrums before ‘Chapter II’ caps off the EP with its blistering riffage bonded with oft-kilter phrasing.
