Kobadelta – The Metaphysical

It is fair to say that their quartet of previous EPs have established Kobadelta as one of the most intriguing and captivating prospects to emerge on the British music scene in recent years and also that listening to the evolution of their seriously tantalising sound has captivated almost as much as the noise itself. October sees the release of the Newcastle bred outfit’s new encounter and another growth in songwriting, music, and temptation.

Their five-track EP, The Metaphysical, sees the band’s psych rock spiced sound reveal its richest and most adventurous landscape yet with an even greater weave of textures and flavours. Melodies are imposing, harmonies bewitching yet both offering magnetic warmth which shimmers and radiates against the instinctive dark tones and emotive shadows which breed the band’s songs. It is a tapestry which lays the Kobadelta sound somewhere between Echo and The Bunnymen and The Doors with an almost gothic Nick Cave essence for extra flavouring.

Formed in 2010, the quintet soon built a potent live reputation locally, nudging on wider recognition with the release of debut EP Ritual (Time Flies) three years later. 2014 saw the band make bigger strides towards national awareness and in sound through both the Hidden Door and Remain Distracted EPs, their success subsequently eclipsed by the Open Visions EP last year. It was a dark and compelling encounter pushing the band’s sound to another level which now The Metaphysical cements and takes on again while still showing the potential of even more adventures to be discovered and explored within the band. With shows alongside the likes of Temples, Allusondrugs, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Demob Happy, Splashh, The Temperance Movement, The Weeks, Lola Colt, and The Voyeurs among many more, and those aforementioned releases, sparking a real appetite for the band’s sound, The Metaphysical might just be the moment Kobadelta hits the broadest spotlights.

The EP swiftly captures ears and imagination with opener Hold Yr’self, the track seducing initially with the caress of suggested pipes before the song tumbles into view with tangy grooves and swinging rhythms. There is no escaping The Doors scenting to any of the band’s song, though Ian McCulloch and co are probably a stronger spicing to what soon shows itself to be distinctly Kobadelta. With the synths of Jordan Robson dancing around the magnetic melodic weave cast by guitarist Alex Malliris, the imagination is soon hooked, gripped tighter as the potent vocals of Dom Noble bring a darker edge in collusion with the rapier swings of drummer Jon Marley and Chris Malliris’ brooding basslines.

It is a compelling start matched by the infectious stroll of the similarly shadow rich and sonically fiery Ride By The Light. Mixing mellower seducing with those dynamic flames of sound and energy, the song is a whirlpool of adventure and drama. There are moments which remind of early   but again as keys wrap the predacious tone of the bass in just one of the track’s major attractions, Kobadelta unveil something unique to themselves.

Bathsheba raises the energy and sultriness of the band’s sound next; its raw mystique and fuzzy climate a feisty wrapping to the tenacious rhythms driving yet another irresistible proposal from the EP. As lyrics and vocals tell a story so does the music, both colluding in a spirit rousing incitement which seems to become darker and more volatile with every enjoyable listen; a potency emulated in the following Is This The Start Of Something Beautiful? and its ferine adventure. So easy to get physically and mentally sucked into its suggestive kaleidoscope of sound, the song trespasses and transfixes the senses as each band member unleashes their fiery enterprise.

Bringing the EP to a magnificent close is You Don’t Need To Ask…, a slow prowl of a headily dark song which borders on demonic even with its theatre of catchy charm, spellbinding melodies, and predacious rhythms. There is a definite occult rock air to the track and its dark romance with the minimal but powerful presence of piano icing on another mighty and increasingly tempestuous highlight of the release.

There are a few bands which have emerged in recent years for which it is hard not to find a touch of real excitement to go along with anticipation upon word of a new proposition from them. The Metaphysical is the perfect example as to why Kobadelta is firmly one of them.

The Metaphysical EP is released in October with its launch show on Friday 4th November in Newcastle at Think Tank – Underground with support from local bands Hazels and FOTO.

The Sons of Bido Lito – Avalanche

Some songs just frisk ears with their creative tenacity; finger the imagination and fondle the psyche with a tempting which almost seems like it has been engineered just to fit personal tastes. One such irresistible enticement for us is Avalanche, the new thrill laden single from UK garage/psych rockers The Sons of Bido Lito. The two track encounter is pure addiction on 7” vinyl courtesy of Dirty Water Records; a pair of songs which from different directions unite to create aural manna for swerving bodies and lusty thoughts.

Taking its name from the Los Angeles hangout of the Sunderland band’s musical heroes such as The Doors, Love, and Captain Beefheart, the seeds of The Sons Of Bido Lito began in the summer of 2011. Inspired by the sixties garage rock sound and equally its psychedelic seduction, the quintet began weaving those essences into their own shadow rich imagination and dark toned invention. The years since emerging have seen the band support the likes of Jacco Gardner and James Skelly & the Intenders, share stages with bands such as Primal Scream, and the release of their well-received debut EP Bido Music in the April of 2013. The following Gamma Ray! single again awoke new and greater amounts of eager appetites as well as finding itself being used by Fifa for their YouTube goal of the month video, ensuring the song there alone was heard over one million times, whilst the track Coco Bongo was taken up by Heineken for their Champions league coverage with Ruud Gullit bringing another 2,000,000 YouTube hits in touch with the band. Now it is the turn of the brilliant Avalanche to stir up more attention, a success quickly assumed as a given once the title song sets to work on ears and imagination.

Cover_RingMaster Review     For us it took barely a handful of seconds to be enthralled to Avalanche, the song winding a juicy flirtatious guitar groove around ears, it almost instantly joined by the bulging muscle of commanding and enticing beats. Another breath sees further guitar shimmering seducing the senses and a rumbling dark bassline whipping up the emotions. Fair to say already every aspect of the song comes with an addictive virulence which only grows and intensifies over time. The garage rock stomping spawned by riffs and rhythms alone just dangles impossible not to take a bite at bait in the lure of the song, that incessant tempting leading to a host of keen and imposingly gripping hooks, juicy grooves, and the great effect wrapped vocals of guitarist Phill Houghton.

Surf rock hues soak the melodic enterprise whilst bass and beats taunt with a tone and infectiousness lying somewhere between The Cramps and Bo Diddley. Overall the song, drawing as much on the flavourings of artists like The Sonics and Dave Edmunds as it does those like Reverend Horton Heat and Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers, finds a unique spot in a bordering on psychotic landscape which is quite simply sixties spawned rock ‘n’ roll alchemy perfect for any era.

The accompanying 12 Commandments emerges with a character more coloured by the psychedelic influences of the band. From within a wash of waves on an imagination assuming midnight lit shore, another heavily alluring bassline from Lem grips attention. A matching rhythmic coaxing from drummer Dodsy quickly joins the affair and a sultry embrace of guitar from Paddy Pickering too, once more a surf rock seducing working away through his and the string exploits of Phill Houghton whose vocals sway in ears like a magnetic flame, the keys and percussive enticing of Chris Houghton completing the palette of sonic colour in the psych rock temptation. The collusion of all hues maybe inevitably suggests The Doors but equally the likes of The Byrds and fellow UK band Kobadelta come to mind across the encounter too.

Though the lead track steals the show, 12 Commandments is sheer bewitchment and together both tracks make Avalanche one majestic virus of sound and reveal The Sons of Bido Lito as one musical infestation everyone needs in their life.

Cave Mouth – Deep Water

Devon is not renowned for its swamps but they must be there as only that kind of landscape could have bred the deliciously sinister and addictively magnetic hues soaking the new single from UK band Cave Mouth. Quite simply Deep Water is a glorious slice of dark rock ‘n’ roll; swamp meets delta blues in the arms of instinctive funk swing and knowledgeable seduction of century old sirens.

cover_RingMaster Review   Influences to Cave Mouth (or CaveMouth, both used by band and all) come from the likes of Prince, ESG, Busta Rhymes, Leadbelly, Jack White, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Jethro Tull, with lyrical inspirations found in the world around the band from politics and religion to nature, and we would suggest the darkest delights to be found anywhere. There are so many potent attributes to the almost primal air and spellbinding invention of the band’s sound, from the bewitching dual vocal union of guitarist Sketchy Lex and bassist Ms. Mo to the primal rhythms stomped down by she and drummer Wreckless Richie, and equally the psyche twisting web of salacious coaxing cast by the flaming saxophone of Mr. Duncan ‘The Hook’ Hook and Lex’s guitar, everything smoulders with temptation. Deep Water is the darkest and most thrilling proposal from the band to date, but one in a line of simply spellbinding traps laid by the band’s mix of blues, funk, and African music infused adventures which includes last year’s excellent Pagan Blues EP.

Bass and beats instantly grab ears, as too the smoky breath of guitar and sultry caress of sax with their almost immediate evocation of the senses. The slight snarl to the voice of Lex perfectly colludes with the rich texture of Ms. Mo’s, whilst in the irresistible chorus a gnarly additional voice evokes dark bordering on demonic mischief from the heart of the song. Like My Baby meets Kobadelta in a coven lorded over by Old House Playground, the song swaggers from chord to thick chord and beat to wicked beat with the instinctive knowledge that it will have the listener enslaved and in rapture from its first touch, and fair to say it does with its melodic tonic and darkly hued resourcefulness, and especially that incendiary chorus and vocal union.

We have many lusts going on at The RR, and Cave Mouth has just become the cause of another.

Kobadelta – Open Visions

Blending the rousing elements of their second EP and the mesmeric seducing of their last, UK psyche rockers Kobadelta unleash their finest moment yet in the hauntingly irresistible shape of Open Visions. The EP provides a feast for ears and imagination to contemplate and devour in their individual ways, its clutch of songs almost hex like in their immersion and seduction of both. Within its arcane charm the band also reveals a greater maturity and inventive lust in songwriting and sonic explorations, Open Visions the simply irresistible dark side of the band’s creativity and the listener’s psyche.

Newcastle bred and formed in 2010, Kobadelta did not take long to arouse a potent following and local clamour for their sonic swelter of a sound and matching live presence. 2013 Debut EP Ritual (Time Flies) lit more than a few fires in ears and thoughts, which the following year its successors Hidden Door and Remain Distracted, took to stronger and broader levels with their compelling sounds. It is fair to say that 2014 was a big year for the band in general. The release of the two EPs surrounded by further successes with Kobadelta being invited to perform a live session for BBC Introducing, headlining the Tanners stage at Evolution Emerging Festival in Newcastle, and playing events like Stockton Weekender alongside artists such as Peter Hook, Public Enemy, and the Happy Mondays as well as the Split Festival with the likes of The Cribs, Maximo Park, and Dizzee Rascal. Support slots for bands such as Temples, Allusondrugs, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Demob Happy, Splashh, The Temperance Movement, The Weeks, Lola Colt, and The Voyeurs, amongst many more has only increased their reputation and stature too. Now it is the turn of the Open Visions EP to push the Kobadelta cause and as we say, it is irresistible.

a0352850419_10   Even The Odds (They Mean You No Harm) is the first track on the release and immediately brings a raw and fiery proposition to bear on ears and thoughts. Guitars and rhythms make a formidable invitation which is easily accepted, even more so when an underlying melodic lure is given clarity as the initial tempest relaxes and the expressive tones of Dom Noble come in. There is still a muggy air to the song, and a siren-esque shadowing to the track which with the exotic enterprise arising from the guitar of Alex Malliris and the keys of Jordan Robson, entices like The Doors meets The Birthday Party. The song continues to immerse and swallow the senses with its sultry almost erosive beauty, increasing its glamour as it heads towards the moment it slips seamlessly into the following Blame It All On Me.

The second track is simple bewitchment from its first caress, smouldering melodies flirting with ears whilst being stalked by the throaty bassline of Jon Marley. The ticking percussive framing and rhythmic probing of drummer Chris Malliris adds intimidation to the dark premise of the song but it is the flowing melodic seducing of the keys and more unsettling designs cast by the guitars which shape the compelling drama emotively coloured by the distinct tones of Noble. There is a touch of Bauhaus to the post punk essences swimming within the psyche rock contagion whilst the gothic rock shading again springs hints of Nick Cave and co.

A fresh shimmer flows across Maskirovka next, keys and guitars a floating haze of sonic suggestiveness whilst bass and drums create a more formidable incitement which erupts with greater intensity around the climatic crescendos posing as choruses. There is something occult like in the dark rock toxicity oozing from the walls of the song and imagination of the band, an essence breeding encroaching shadows which infest and linger in ears and psyche.

The infectiousness kicks up another level with Watch What You’re Doing, its open caress of guitar the seeds for another compelling bassline and crisply landed beats to work their addictiveness as vocals and keys bring a haunting colour. Once into its magnetic stroll, the song shows itself to be as much pop rock as it is dark rock ‘n’ roll, its catchiness as captivatingly accessible as its soaring sonic enterprise is celestially provocative and darkly fascinating.

Ithaca ventures into an even heavier soundscape but swiftly tempers some of its daunting air with an echoing effect on the ever alluring vocals and backing harmonies, whilst guitars and keys sway and smother the rhythmic spine of the song with the dance of a sonic temptress. The song is pure mesmerism but with an underlying danger which seems to incite richer flames and piercing textures to emerge in the invention of Alex Malliris and Robson.

Final track Black Pyramid, like the first, accosts ears with a slightly caustic and hazy roar of sound but is soon casting an invasive exotic atmosphere through guitars and keys. Eruptions of energy and intensity only add to the sweltering air and impact of the song, whilst melodically and vocally, there is again no escaping a reference to the Jim Morrison’s led band.

If like us you fell in love with Kobadelta’s last EPs, then lust is the outcome with Open Visions, the pinnacle of the band’s sound and invention to date. If new to the transfixing world of the band, then a wealth of dark sultry treats await.

Bernaccia – Light//-//Dark

Having gripped the imagination and transfixed ears with their Cinema EP earlier this year, UK rock band Bernaccia rigorously enslave both again with new encounter, the Light//-//Dark EP. Consisting of four tracks which immerse the listener in hazy and invigorating fusions of blues and folk rock with a rugged rock ‘n’ roll tenacity, the band’s latest release not only reinforces all the impressive things discovered in the band previously but opens up new tantalising depths to their invention and attention grabbing enterprise.

Formed in 2010, the Gateshead quartet of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jonny Noble, lead guitarist Stew Falkous, drummer Chris Cox, and bassist Kieran Healy took little time in garnering a potent local spotlight and fan base though their live performances, which has seen them play with the likes of Royal Blood, Twisted Wheel, and Wolf People over time, and first single The Keeper. Its appetite raising presence was emulated by its successor No Club but it has been the Cinema EP which ignited a nationwide spotlight, a success which Light//-//Dark can only spark to a new level.

Opener Street Life warms up ears with a suggestive glaze of keys but it is once the pulsating bassline colludes with spicy blues kissed guitar endeavour that thoughts and appetite are really stoked into attention. The rhythmic slavery which gripped on the last EP is instant potent bait again on the first track, Cox’s jabs and prods luring instinctive submission as Noble’s expressive vocals align with sultry melodies to craft a provocative colour to it all. Aided by similarly vibrant hues of keys, psychedelic atmospherics flirt with the senses, The Doors inescapable references to what otherwise is a distinctly unique presence. Flames of harmonica only add to the enthralling and anthemic start to the release, an immediate peak matched by its successor.

Darkness Walks groans throatily initially before sonic enterprise emerges to intrigue and guide the imagination into the tempestuous shadows and heavy emotion of is broadening persuasion. A hollow effect on the vocals add to the light darkcavernous yet thick texture and breath of the smouldering intensity building within the track. There are similarities to fellow Geordie blues rockers Kobadelta in the song, the exploration of rich shadows and imposing drama an immersive incitement which with the sizzling sonic roar around them only engrosses and thrills.

Third song Manifest is the first of two featuring Ellen Chetcuti, though it is a gentle caress of keys and a vocal whistle which makes initial contact before a feisty stroll of riffs and great badgering rhythms ignites a hungry response in thoughts and emotions. It is not long before the seductive tones of Chetcuti join those of Noble, their union as potent as the relentless monosyllabic rhythmic dance and equally single-minded but delicious riffs and hooks. The track is scintillating, especially when a jazzy breeze of invention and sonic humidity plays with the imagination.

The EP closes with the blues croon of Blue Man, vocal harmonies straight away bringing a dramatic temptation which the atmospheric expansion of the song accentuates through a triple vocal seduction. Chetcuti is the perfect foil and incitement to the darker tones of Noble and band, whilst the slim but grippingly expressive melodic enterprise, as every note and syllable comes in a melancholic wrap; its blues lament a rich balm on emotions and fire for the passions.

Bernaccia undoubtedly impressed with Cinema but Light//-//Dark opens up an even stronger ‘lustful’ reaction with its growth from the last encounter, employing all that made its predecessor a focus grabbing offering and infusing them in an even more incendiary proposition of ears, emotions, and attention. Bernaccia are going to have an important say in the direction of British rock if they carry on like this.

Kobadelta – Remain Distracted EP

Having been enthralled by their rousing EP, The Hidden Door earlier this year, there was keen anticipation waiting for the release of its successor Remain Distracted. Both EPs come from the creative minds and resourceful imagination of UK band Kobadelta, and each provides a fascinating climate of sound and excitement to greedily immerse within. Remain Distracted takes the strengths and potency of its predecessor into new emotive and adventurous sonic flights, pushing the potential and emerging presence of the band into riveting and sultry landscapes. In some ways it is a slow burner compared to the last release but through a quartet of fiery and seductive songs, sets down the most potent and heady pinnacle from the band yet.

The release of Remain Distracted comes in a potent year for the Newcastle quintet which has seen them chosen to play Newcastle’s Evolution Emerging festival, as well as Stockton Weekender (with Happy Mondays and Public Enemy headlining) and Split Festival (with Maximo Park, The Cribs and Dizzee Rascal). Added to that there has also been a live session for BBC Introducing as well as numerous successful shows with bands like Allusondrugs. The new release adds another strong moment in the band’s year and one more irresistible enticement to develop a rich hunger over.

As soon as the sultry stroke of guitar from Alex Malliris opens up first track Siam, there is a potent temptation at work, its smouldering yet ripe lure a swift caress and announcement of the dark psychedelic invention the band is already acclaimed for. Another breath sees the hypnotic throaty basslines of Jon Marley join the evolving enticement of the guitar and the enterprising rhythmic framing of Chris Malliris. It is a glorious flame brought further to life by the mellow yet nicely raw tones of vocalist Dom Noble, all this against the already tantalising weave of melodic expression cast by the keys of Jordan Robson. It is a stunning track, elements of The Doors colluding with other whispers of bands like early The Horrors, 13th Floor Elevators, and Thee Exciters in an original fire of sound equipped with infectiously imposing hooks and grooves.

Repetition steps up next and instantly finds a heavier growl to its riffs, though that weight is not quite transferred to the crisp beats and elegant bassline. That restraint on some aspects and the mix of dark and light within the song works kobadelta epa treat all the same; its steady but feisty canter evolving through a sultry slow flight of immersive keys before breaking back with increasing tenacity in energy and attack. The Birthday Party like song is an intriguing shadow blessed proposition, not as dramatically gripping as its predecessor but growing into another absorbing and incendiary involvement of the imagination and emotions.

Its successor is less slow in gripping the passions, They Can’t Hurt Me floating in on another delicious almost sinister bassline. Its dark tone inspires a haunting essence to the minimalistic melody of the guitar and vocal croon of Noble, the merger offering a noir wrapped sultriness in presence and sound. There is a definite Cramps essence to the song as well as that of Jim Morrison and co, as well as hints of Damn Vandals and The Dropper’s Neck, but with an ingenious addiction sparking bait from bass and guitar aligned to similarly anthemic beats, the track is a slice of brilliance distinct to Kobadelta and their greatest song yet since forming.

The EP is closed by The Heretic, a sizzling sway of sonic causticity and melodic temptation driven by a swaggering rhythmic and riff crafted enterprise. As in other songs there is a prime hook which is inescapable for ears and passions, its coaxing leading the senses into the scorching haze of guitar and atmospheric heat of the keys. With the delivery of Noble again parading the song’s narrative with an unfussy but magnetically expressive texture, the song is a mesmeric consumption of the senses and a fine end to another impressive release from Kobadelta.

The band just gets better and better as evidenced by Remain Distracted ensuring whatever comes next from Kobadelta will be met with greedy anticipation.
