Reverse Family: 365 days of songwriting

Last August we gave you a first look and insight into the epic new project from Reverse Family. Starting the following October, the plan with 365 was to release 52 EPs as one a week for a whole year, each of their songs representing a single day in the inspiring life of its creator.

Reverse Family is the solo project of Dermot Illogical, though you may know him as Andreas Vanderbraindrain, the frontman of British outfit The Tuesday Club. With its brainchild embracing the various talents of others, Reverse Family first grabbed keen attention with debut album My Songs About Life Mid Crisis in 2016. In so many ways 365 is a whole new ball game for the band, a project taking the listener into the heart and thoughts, not forgetting darkness, Dermot personally experienced as he came to terms with personal despair through the death of a great friend and band mate, going through divorce, dealing with the serious illness of both parents and other traumas taking Dermot to the edge.

Since that first collection of songs sent our way to announce the release of 365, the project has been in full swing with some more teasers sent for our ears to explore. So time to give you more insight into a collection of songs which we can say to date has grabbed the imagination and pleasured ears in varying persistently enjoyable ways by focusing on a few more which have recently been unveiled.

Day 20 provides The Suns rays are just like birthdays, an inviting stroll built around a great post punk bassline as crispy beats align to the distinctive tones of Dermot. Reflecting on the radiance of the weather as emotions rise and fall, the track is a thickly infectious affair nagging away at ears like a pleasurable itch.

There is great diversity to the sound and personas of songs with 365 too, Was I a good man (day 15) swinging along with a sixties garage pop hues as guitars offer their psych kissed jangle while No Reason to run (day 6) has the rhythmic shuffle of a King Trigger aligned to an off kilter twee/ indie pop croon. Hugging a melody which enthrals in its nagging simplicity, the track is simply mesmeric, almost shamanic in its virulent enterprise.

Equally irresistible is the bricks and mortar snarl of Sunshade City (day 21). It has a gnarly tone around the pulsating shadowy lure of the bass, both at the heart of its post punk/industrial examination while with matching success We Got It (day26) sees Reverse Family embrace early Adam and The Ants textures in its resourceful punk dance. With so many tracks unveiled already it is hard to pick a favourite but this always figures in any contemplation as too does  the twang lilted Keep Being the Good Guy (day 25). Its country punk tinge and another irresistible bass line and tone court the ever virulent vocal delivery of Dermot, it all uniting in one seriously catchy persuasion.

Seductive acoustic discord flirts from within Dark pop (day 7) and insatiable askew pop punk is bred through the rousing antics of Pay the price (day 3) while School gate politics (day 64) is a prowling harassment with menacing shadows and post punk intimation, kind of like a Bowie meets Artery contemplation. All three are additional pinnacles in the lofty landscape of tracks released to date and definite favourites with us among so many more.

It has to be said though that Movin’ forward (day 74) is the cream of the crop, its repetitious swing and hook lined lure simply irresistible; a real ear worm as dark as it is vibrant. There are numerous potent ways to get into 365, such as the delicious lithe tenebrific pop ‘n’ roll of Your wandering hands (day 82) but Movin’ forward is addiction in the waiting.

Bernaccia – Growl Peace Belief

Having followed with eagerness the progress of British band Bernaccia since the release of their debut EP in 2014, it has been a source of great enjoyment hearing the evolution in their striking sound. A proposition truly hard to pin down but openly flavoured by essences seeded in the likes of neo-psych rock, desert blues, and Eastern spices, the Newcastle band’s music has blossomed from the low key yet fully magnetic alternative/psych rock tempting of that first outing, the Cinema EP, to the rousingly haunting and spiritually anthemic soundscapes making up first album Growl Peace Belief. The nine track offering simply absorbs the senses, picking up the imagination with equal ease as tribal bred rhythms and melodic suggestiveness unite with harmonic flames and lyrical drama. It is one of those rare releases which comes and along and bewitches with aural alchemy; an album forcibly pushing the band to the fore of the UK rock scene.

Originally a quartet when forming in 2014 and more recently a quintet with the addition of vocalist Ellen Chetcuti’s charmed tones alongside the powerful delivery of vocalist/guitarist Jonny Noble, Bernaccia has increasingly drawn rich attention through a live presence taking in shows with the likes of Royal Blood, Lola Colt, Alabama 3, The Fall, Twisted Wheel, CUD, and Wolf People among many and releases like Cinema, its successor Light//-//Dark later that first year and singles such as Power To The Hills, Awake, and recently Angel. Each has revealed a new blossoming in the sound and imagination of the band, it all now coming to a head in the climactic Growl Peace Belief.

The album opens up with War Cry; a track emerging from an intriguing coastal sounding landscape as the listener is drawn by an exotic guitar melody with inviting tabla inspired beats courting the coaxing. Expanding its embrace with every passing second, an Echo and The Bunnymen feel caressing the imagination, Noble’s voice is the final pull into the shamanic bordering on erotic seducing of the senses. With the darker hues of Kieran Healy’s bass a brooding tone alongside the insistent repetition of Chris Cox’s drums, and the united roar of Noble and Chetcuti an inescapable engagement over their respective psyche entangling enterprise, the track is fiercely irresistible only imposing its persuasive weight further through the creative synth drama cast by Stew Falkous.

bernaccia_promo_photo_RingMasterReviewThe following Spiral is a slimmer proposal in terms of intensity, wrapping ears swiftly with an eighties synth pop welcome with just a touch of Bowie’s Heroes to it. As the synth bubbles and expels riveting mists of electronic enterprise into the air, guitar and bass begin weaving a tapestry of imagination which in turn seems to instigate a growing tempestuousness coming to a towering head as the vocalists expertly combine. Departing with the same masterful charm it started with, the song makes way for an equally thrilling proposal in Awake. Rhythms instantly trap attention with their tenacious dance, Chetcuti joining them with her firmly enticing voice backed by Noble soon after before the song drops into a mystique laden bellow of sound with the latter seizing ears as that shamanic prowess of the band again grips body and spirit. The imagination constantly has a field day with Bernaccia songs, this one like a flight across a cavernous and intimately spiritual soundscape.

Power To The Hills also provides eighties reminding hues, this time King Trigger with their similar rhythmic invention and Nick Cave through the song’s dark rock n’ roll graced theatre of word and tone suggested in thoughts. The track is another which builds dramatic crescendos which boldly ignite the senses, the build of melodic and rhythmic ingenuity leading to them just as rewarding and provocative as the fiery expulsions themselves.

As the ear enslaving captivation of Angel and the poppier shuffle of Vega come and go, band and album simply tighten their grip and further inflame an already discovered appetite for the Bernaccia invention. The first of the pair is arguably the least imposing of the band’s songs but just as virulent in its imagination and infectious psychedelically hued tempting while its successor has all the shadowy beauty and danger found in other songs but with a catchiness which infests the listener as a blues/psych flavouring similar to that conjured by My Baby arrests the imagination.

Every track within Growl Peace Belief is a treat with Murder one of the most thrilling next with its repetitive keys placed melody and volcanic intensity. Graced by another glorious vocal union between Noble and Chetcuti and the individual theatre of sound and suggestiveness crafted by all, the track is superb, it’s nagging quality alone manna for ears before Senorita consumes with its romancing Latin seduction and dramatic rhythms as keys and harmonies virtually swamp the senses.

Concluded by its invasively melodic and drama driven title track, another stunning pinnacle of the album deserving ears more than words to reflect its might, Growl Peace Belief is the realisation of the hard work, thick imagination, and spirited energy Bernaccia has spent and discovered these past two years. It is also the declaration of a band ready to have a big say on the British rock scene ahead.

Caesaria – Bring My Ears Back

Swinging from the heart of the French underground, Caesaria is a quartet creating electro-pop which refuses to be ignored, certainly on the evidence of new single Bring My Ears Back and their recent EP. Taken from that EP of the same name, the latest offering is a jungle of funk infested rhythms and electronic revelry primed to take ears and hips on a festival of feisty revelry.

Formed in 2013, Caesaria embrace English rock/pop seeded in the eighties. It flavours a new wave/dance funk escapade given an individual yet enjoyably accessible stamp by the quartet of Théo Chaumard, Dénis Donlic, Thomas Fariney, and Louis Arcens. Making a potent and increasing impression with their live prowess since day one, the band released debut EP, Sparks of Visions, in 2015, eclipsing its success with successor Bring My Ears Back.

Caesaria - art_RingMasterReviewThat EP’s title track reinforces its attention grabbing adventure within its first seconds; buoyant rhythms and inviting melodies, reminding a touch of eighties UK band King Trigger, laying the first invitation. Soon melodies dance as grooves spring around harmonically warm vocals; it all adding to an inescapable lure for body and enjoyment.

As keys swarm enticingly around the senses and the cleverly layered textures of the track, there is certainly a familiar air and touch to things but as mentioned earlier, with an individuality which plays like an old friend with fresh devilment in the heart.

Caesaria and Bring My Ears Back are a proposal no dance floor will be able to resist while equally carrying an indie jangle to spark the appetites of less eagerly mobile enthusiasts; simply an energetic treat for all.

Headsticks – Feather and Flame

Whichever angle you come at Feather and Flame, the new album from UK quartet Headsticks, it is a seriously rousing incitement. Offering eleven diverse and eventful slices bred in the band’s fusion of folk and punk rock, the release gets the body bouncing, thoughts sparking, and the spirit racing. The breeding of serious pleasure is not low on successes triggered either as Feather and Flame not only reinforces the reputation already earned by the band but confirms Headsticks as one of Britain’s most irresistible and essential punk ‘n’ roll adventures.

Formed late 2012 by former members of bands like Tower Struck Down, Jugopunch, and The Clay Faces, the Stoke on Trent hailing Headsticks quickly whipped up potent interest in their sound with a debut three-track E.P in 2013. Their live presence was just as rapid in stirring up of support and fans, the band over time playing shows across the UK as well as numerous festivals whilst sharing stages with a host of well-regarded names in both the folk and punk/alternative genres. The summer of 2014 saw the release of first album Muster, a proposition highly acclaimed by fan and media alike and again backed by the band’s persistent live hunger. Now it is Feather and Flame seriously stirring up ears and attention with its socially and politically charged and challenging songs fuelled by a delicious diversity of sound and dramatic adventure.

The album hits the ground running from its first second, jangling chords and beef rhythms grabbing ears as opener What Do You Want leaps into view. Vocalist Andrew Tranter quickly has the imagination hooked as he lyrically opens up an insight into the lives of the working man and the importance of and habit for things that possibly warrant neither. It is a provocative and swiftly contagious encounter, at times a thumping canter of sound and energy with moments of sweltering funk spice which only adds to its virulent drama.

featherandflame_RingMasterReviewThe thrilling anthemic start gets swiftly matched by the evocatively aired Cold Grey English Skies. Here the rhythms of bassist Nick Bayes and drummer Tom Carter hold a touch more reserve in their framing of a similarly reined urgency shared by Steven Dunn’s guitar, but all easily cast a catchiness which has hips swaying to their movement and the descriptive prowess of Tranter. With a gloriously melodic and addictive chorus, the song has a rich hint of Flogging Molly meets Violent Femmes meets Fatima Mansions to it, further flavouring to seduce ears and appetite before Go Move Shift uncages its own individual virulence. Straight away the song infuses country-esque revelry to its quickly tenacious folk honed rock ‘n’ roll, this time around thoughts picking out Midnight Oil as a hint to the hues working away within another forcibly persuasive track. The flavouring is just another example of the great variety within the album already showing its bold face across the first trio of treats.

The excellent Old Folk Songs has feet and voice soon involved with its punchy mix of folk and punk; a blending of sound around honest appraisal in some ways carrying a scent of Paranoid Visions to it whilst its successor Foxford Town brings a Pogues like lilt to its just as inescapable infectiousness and enthralling drama. Again an array of rock strains collude to create an emotive weave of sound around similarly nurtured syllables and once more Headsticks sculpt a chorus which demands eager participation. Tranter’s harmonica charms bring further colour to the proposal as they do in the traditional folk seeded Mississippi’s Burning where, as you might expect, bodies are induced to bounce and voices inspired to call out along with the band’s rousing croon.

Pay the Price matches it in persuasion and core sound, and subsequently success whilst Tomorrow’s History offers a more rugged affair with its anthemic arousal. The first of the two is an easy coaxing with its successor adding more boisterous attitude and energy to a shared quality of temptation, it bringing a tinge of bands like The Tossers into play before the compelling Every Single Day flirts with fifties rock ‘n’ roll for its power pop/folk punk romp. All three tracks leave the breath short and an appetite for more, greedier; that want more than fed by the outstanding Burn the Sun which follows. Creating a shuffle soaked in sultry seventies funk devilry and seventies new wave devilry, the track swings and flirts like a unique mix of King Trigger and New Model Army.

The album closes with the acoustic tempting and open heart of Falling Out of Love Song, a final folk caress to hungrily embrace before pressing play on Feather and Flame all over again. The album has that addictive quality, one listen leads to another or more almost every time whilst Headsticks is a band for punks, folksters, and rock ‘n’ rollers alike; for anyone who likes being aroused and provoked in equal measure by music that just gets under the skin.

Bernaccia – Awake

British neo-psych rockers Bernaccia has perpetually caught ears and expectations by surprise with their insistently magnetic fusion of psychedelic mystery and desert blues atmospherics driven by tribalistic rhythms. Indeed across EPs and singles, the Newcastle band has grown into one of the UK’s most compelling propositions, beguiling and seducing with their dark and often cinematic rock ‘n’ roll. New single Awake though has arguably provided the biggest and admittedly most flavoursome twist yet with the ear catching addition of vocalist Ellen Chetcuti to the band’s ranks.

From their 2014 released Cinema EP, the foursome of vocalist/guitarist Jonny Noble, synthist Stew Falkous, bassist Kieran Healy, and drummer Chris Cox has persistently and increasingly lured attention and acclaim with their fascinating darkly lit psych/melodic rock explorations. Equally their live presence has only reinforced the potency of their emergence as shows with the likes of Royal Blood, Lola Colt, Alabama 3, The Fall, Twisted Wheel, CUD, and Wolf People have come and successfully passed alongside the release of impressive proposals like the heftily acclaimed Light//-//Dark EP and last single Power To The Hills. The well-received track was the band’s most intense and dark tapestry of sound and imagination yet and now more than matched by the brighter lit but just as rousing and immersive Awake.

Keys caress ears initially as a percussive shuffle dances with the imagination. Swiftly the unexpected and quickly embraced voice of Chetcuti slips in. Listening to a release before doing research, especially in regard to a band already well known, can often catch expectations out, and here the presence of the band’s newest member certainly provided a rewarding surprise. In no time, Noble’s familiar dark tones step forwards alongside Chetcuti’s, synths rising with suggestive and exotic flames around their alternating and merging persuasions as ears and thoughts are quickly entangled in the song’s thick and shadowed drama. Drenched in similarly immersive atmospheric smog, the track reveals great blues and at times eighties new wave enterprise, playing like a mix of My Baby, Jingo, and King Trigger whilst emerging as another unique Bernaccia adventure.

Increasingly anthemic and spirit rousing with each one of its inciting minutes, Awake is a new step in the gripping rise of Bernaccia. Why the band’s dark and often sinister romances of body and imagination have not made then a name on the lips of multitudes it is hard to understand but maybe Awake will be the spark to tempt the broadest spotlights that the band deserves.

Lifecycle – Lino Cosmos

Listening to Lino Cosmos is like being locked in a creative frenzy brought with the most sublime resourcefulness and intricate control. The new album from UK rockers Lifecycle is a delicious weave of styles and imagination which defies description yet nestles perfectly in the appetite of any melodic and alternative rock fan. Strolling with bold exploration through rhythmic jungles, melodic dramas, and electronic emprises, Lino Cosmos is an insatiably adventurous flight driven by sultry tribal tenacity across diverse soundscapes beneath hazily psychedelic skies.

The London band consists of guitarist/vocalist Geoffrey Dent, bassist Letitia Austin, and drummer Nick Holder. The history of Dent and Austin goes back a fair way having met in the nineties. It was another fifteen years though before the pair met again and merged their skills in Lifecycle with Holder, having come across Dent in 2009, linking up a year later. With the album Luxury Condominium under its belt and a renowned live presence which is as much a trigger to mass bodily involvement in dance fans as rock, the trio release their most gripping and incendiary incitement yet. Lino Cosmos is a voracious flirtation and agitated seduction which just cannot be ignored, a tapestry of flavours and genres which converge into one inescapable psyche swamping sensation.

As soon as the opening rhythmic shuffle of Dissolve tantalises ears, band and album has attention and imagination in their palms. It is a teasing invitation which swiftly grows in stature as beats gain weight and Austin’s bass begins its primal flirtation. The instinctive dance only increases in temptation as Dents sandy tones courted by melodic intrigue add their colour to the creative revelry. There is a swagger and energy to the song which recalls the core of Happy Mondays whilst rhythmically the band brings thoughts of eighties band King Trigger to the fore. Never exploding into an outright rampage but wonderfully nagging away with anthemic potency across a net of magnetic beats wrapped in a warm electro ambience the track is insatiably hypnotic and warmly fascinating.

The powerful start is swiftly matched by the gorgeous beauty and infectiousness of Not Enough. Entering on another eighties seeded melodic and rhythmic dance, thoughts of Electric Guitars and Hey! Elastica swiftly in place, the song is soon breaking out its sinews with heavy bass courting and funk bred enterprise. Again it is all bound in an electro festivity and vocal excellence with radiant harmonies, the mix a full captivation to feet and imagination. Virulent in its energy, exhausting in its voracious persuasion, and incessant in its almost exotic charm, the song is scintillating and easily one of the best incitements heard this year.Lino Cosmos art SUPSYM004_4000

The rhythmic and melodic seducing shows no signs of relinquishing their addictive holds as both Patterns and Burst Your Bubble swarm over ears and emotions. The first has a slightly more restrained vivacity compared to the previous songs but with bewitching and increasingly feisty agitation to the rhythms and a Police like mellowness to vocals and melodies, it moves and flirts like a Caribbean temptress as radiance spills from every caress of keys and stroke of guitar. Its successor prowls with a shadowed smile to its presence and intriguing colour, the song as others carrying a melodic grin within a web of alluring rhythms, yet there is a bordering on sinister lilt to the heart and atmosphere of the emerging exploration too. At times the track has a whisper of Pop Will Eat Itself to it and in others an enticing of Vampire Weekend meets Silhouettes, and though it is more a smouldering tempting than the instantly enslaving stomps of its predecessors, the track evolves into an equally compelling treat.

Every song upon Line Cosmos has its own individual drama, the meaty scenery and scorched rock walls of The Big Picture next a riveting example. It spreads cunningly over the imagination, sparking new adventures with every climb of its broody and continually expanding narrative. Listening to the album is like being bound and held in the throes of sonic alchemy, the next up Rush Into This immersing senses and thoughts in a haunting melodic experiment as rock, pop, dub, and electronic majesty entwine in an extraordinary cinematic descent into dark realms and emotional shadows.

Change Tact also explores a haunted realm, melodies emotionally reflective whilst shards of guitars and breezes of keys paint the song’s canvas with crystaline and celestial hues respectively. The track is engrossing though it lacks something to spark the passions as the previous songs, similarly final song Greed. Nevertheless both leave ears satisfied and appetite full, the closing track springing a fiery stroll of rock pop with electronic spotting.

Lino Cosmos is an encounter which lingers longer than most and incites complete involvement of body and soul in its company. Lifecycle are sonic alchemists, centuries ago they would be burnt as witches but today we can only hungrily indulge and devour their creative majesty.
