Making a potent introduction with their debut EP last year, UK post hardcore band Cardinal Bay have upped their game with its successor Answers. It is a five track proposal which growls as it dances on the ear, all of its tracks being as seriously catchy as they are emotively and aggressively forceful.

The strength of the band’s 2015 debut EP Way Back Home, released in their second year together, suggested that the Bridgwater quintet had the potential to make some big musical statements ahead and Answers certainly lives up to that promise in many ways. It comes after a year, since that first release, where the band undertook many UK tours, playing around the country alongside Amaryllis, Lost Atlanta, Chasing Cadence, and Breathe in the Silence and supported Funeral for a Friend before playing main stage at the UK’s biggest youth music festival, Butserfest. The early months of 2016 have been no different in business and success, the five-piece having made a recently acclaimed appearance on the main stage at Teddy Rocks. Now it is time for the Jonny Renshaw (Devil Sold His Soul) recorded Answers to lay down a marker for what many are calling the most exciting band to recently emerge in the post hardcore scene.

art_RingMasterReviewFrom its first moments, the Answers EP certainly does little to dismiss that type of claim, its title track slipping into ears with a melodic jangle as feisty sounds flirt with its background. Pretty soon rhythms and riffs are jostling for attention too as the strong harmonic cries of Josh Rogers colour the song’s air. It is not an over striking start but the song easily has attention held, especially once Roger’s strong vocals stroll with a throaty bassline from Jonny Dibble for company as beats jab and skirt their tempting. As the guitars of George Hill and Dave Small cast a web of melodic suggestiveness, the song simmers nicely with the occasion eruption of raw vocal growls matched by an increase in energy led by the lively beats of Matt Ward.

A strong start to the EP, the song is a sign of things to come with bigger and bolder things waiting to really spark the imagination starting with Out Of Sight. The second track has a far more imposing air to it straight away, swinging beats hitting with a heavier hand as again raw vocal squalls court the impressing melodic tones of Rogers. The band does have a flare with creating infectious pop seeded enterprise too and that also blossoms within the tenacious encounter, almost so well that its make the rawest hues of the track seem unnecessary.

Its feisty presence is matched and eclipsed by the outstanding roar of the following #Shotgun. Instantly it has a virulence and fiery edge which seduces and ignites the imagination and appetite to their strongest reactions yet. There is something familiar to the song, an indefinable essence which only adds to its drama and magnetism built on shadowy rhythms, melodic adventure, and a rampant catchiness more than conducted by Roger’s powerful delivery.

Masquerade makes a more tempered impact next though from its initial grouchy attack amidst a spiral of sonic enterprise, the track easily engages and increasingly pleases ears. It lacks the spark of its predecessors musically, the ear grabbing bite which chains attention but certainly makes up for it with the now expected great vocal quality of the band.

The EP comes to a close with There Are No Flames In Hell, a track which slowly burned itself into the passions. By its end though, and helped by round after round of its infection loaded chorus, it emerged as another strong and lingering favourite. The track contains every impressive element of the band and its sound, giving plenty more reasons why so many are waxing lyrical about Cardinal Bay. With the Answers EP to the fore, 2016 is looking like being a big year for the Somerset band.

Blood Youth – Closure EP

Blood Youth hold nothing back on their new EP; their passion, fury, and intensity is fuelled to the top and going for the jugular. To that, the UK metallers also add some imaginative invention and snarling contagiousness to create one attention grabbing incitement.

The Closure EP is four tracks of punk driven metal seemingly unleashing, lyrically and physically, a pent up heart and ire. The successor to the well-received Inside My Head EP of last year, it emotionally carries on from its predecessor with guitarist Chris Pritchard recently saying about the release, “Our debut was a lyrical meltdown. It expressed the issues Kaya (vocalist Kaya Tarsus) has had for the past six years in a way he hadn’t been able to show until the band started. With this new E.P – Closure – it’s about what he once felt coming to an end. And for all of us this EP is literally closure for the personal anxiety we all felt while writing Inside My Head. The whole thing was a recovery process…Full circle.” That unleashing of emotion is an open roar backed by a sound which equally builds on its predecessor and subsequently leaves it in the shade through its voracious and creative enterprise.

Its brief body is a melodic coaxing of guitar and keys with the potent vocal caresses of Tarsus laying out his emotive reflection. Around it though is a tension, an underlying almost portentously melancholic air which erupts in full rigour within the following 24/7. A vocal roar sparks a stalking of the senses by predatory beats and grievous yet buoyant riffs. They do carry some restraint which is quickly thrown off once Tarsus vents with impressive expression and vocal dexterity as the rest of the band spring an inescapable web of creative animosity and temptation. On the surface, the Blood Youth sound does not strike as being overtly unique yet from a salacious bassline and the irritability of vocals, which seem to transfer their spikiness into the hungry sonic enterprise, band and song show themselves to be something imaginatively distinct and pleasingly volatile.

The song continues to twist and turn, bruising and badgering the senses whilst gripping ears with a fierce engagement of bold ideation; qualities and success continuing in Mood Swing. Living up to its name, the track is a torrent of predacious grooves and lethal hooks aligned to barbarous rhythms yet at a slip of a note becomes a melodically catchy and warmly engaging enticement of seriously catchy rock ‘n’ roll. The track is superb, Blood Youth creating the kind of slavery ears long for and the type of song which pushes bands into major spotlights.

The EP closes with its title track, the song also the new single/video from the band. Bred from the same template as the last track, it offers a warm melodic hand initially with the voice of Tarsus again impressing with its mix of clean and hoarse deliveries. Though it is easy to see why it was chosen as the lead track with its anthemic roars, it does lack the extra creative spark of Mood Swing for personal tastes yet leaves ears and emotions invigorated and hungry for more.

Blood Youth have leapt on in style from their last highly enjoyable release. If In My Head was a call to arms, Closure is a declaration of war on dark times and thoughts announcing the Harrogate band as another potential soaked and exciting proposition to add to the watch very closely list.

The Closure EP is released March 11th physically and digitally via Rude Records.

From Her Eyes may be young in age, its members just slipping out of their teens, but there is a maturity to their sound which instantly impresses as it belies their youth and ensures the Welsh metalcore band is a thoroughly captivating proposition. The release of their debut EP Demons reinforces an already keen buzz for the band whilst taking their presence to a national level to, it is easy to expect, similarly eager but ultimately wider attention growing up around them.

Formed in 2012, the Bridgend consists of school friends Tom Owen (vocals), James Kearle (guitar), Jesse Simmonds (bass) and Gary Holley (drums). From Her Eyes since day one has been a rigorously active proposition, sharing stages with the likes of One Last Breath, Red Seas Fire, Continents, When We Were Wolves, Set to Break, and Reaper in Sicily amongst hordes of shows before settling down to create their first release. That saw the band linking up with Jonny Renshaw (Devil Sold His Soul) at Bandit Studios to record Demons with the resulting EP a compelling and gripping slice of voracious angst fuelled metal.

The EP opens up with brief instrumental Decay, a haunting piece with elegant guitar craft coaxing ears and imagination within a brooding air of portentous persuasion. More subtle than dramatic and beautifully crafted, the track is a From Her Eyes Cover Artworkmagnet into the release and the following Comatose. From its first breath the vocal delivery and narrative of Owen is an impassioned presence which roars within an immediately enticing web of sonic and rhythmic enterprise. There is ruggedness to the beats of Holley and riffs of Kearle whilst Simmonds unveils a heavy throated lure from his bass which only adds to the weight and presence of the track. To that muscular intent though the acidic melodies and sonic weaving brings a vibrant colour and strained charm which exposes the strength and invention of the band in songwriting and sound impressively.

From that mighty proposition the releaser grows another level with Porcelain, its gentle initial coaxing where again melodies seduce and intrigue with their emotive hues, leading into a tempestuous storm of heavily descending rhythms and abrasing riffs. An additional squall of anger to that offered by Owen makes an imposing and pleasing pressure whilst the song almost flirts with the antagonism that rages with every beat and chord. As in its predecessor though, in the wall of confrontation there is elegant veining which is as dramatic in its evocative presence as the brawling endeavours surrounding its beauty. The track is outstanding, easily the best on the release and another potent reason why From Her Eyes is being touted as a big event waiting to happen.

The next up Disillusionist is a rawer abrasion than the previous tracks, though it too is equipped with intelligent and intricate sonic suasion. It does lack the spark of those earlier songs with its hostile breath overpowering the previously perfect blend of rage and elegance but it still makes for a stirring and riveting incitement to keep the release firmly entrenched in attention and appetite.

Elysium with its post hardcore resonance is a brief respite from the rage of the last song but it too is lacking something to make it spark in the passions. Despite that its masterful sculpting is a draw in its own right to ready ears and emotions for the final evocative tide of the title track. The last song’s first touch is a controlled but turbulent wash of heavy swiping rhythms and vivacious sonic enticing which swiftly enslaves the senses before its finds a sturdier antipathy. It is a powerful and robust finale infused with the richly appealing melodic lacing and sonic colouring which sets the band apart from the majority of the metalcore crowd, though still not quite enough for the band to find its own distinct corner. The song also features Lucas Woodland, the vocalist from Falling With Style. His presence and excellent clean tones highlights the only wish to be had with the EP, a bolder variety to the vocals. Owen is impressive but as with seemingly the majority of metalcore seeded bands there is an aversion to temper or fuse the raging single minded roars of passion with something openly different. If there is one band which could do it to striking success though, on the evidence of the last song, it is From Her Eyes.

The song is an excellent end to a similarly impressive release. Demons will push From Her Eyes into a richer attentive spotlight and the country will embrace their debut with relish, that is surely a given so now it is up to the band to take it to the next highly anticipated level.

Mortdelamer – Words Within The Wires EP

In a recent review we commented that many of the emerging female fronted alternative rock bands as impressive as many of them are have a similarity and familiarity which locks them together. Occasionally there are exceptions and one band which certainly stands out from the crowd is UK rock trio Mortdelamer. It is a band which sizzles with invention and imagination as proven by their outstanding new EP Words Within The Wires. The release marks them as one of the most exciting bands to have arrived on the scene in recent years, its five delicious melodic yet feisty tracks a thrilling and inspiring pleasure.

From Swindon, Wiltshire and formed in 2008, the combined talent and invention of childhood friends Joe Bishop (Bass Guitar), Sean Ivens (Drums), and Claire Sutton (Guitar, Vocals, and Keyboards) has earned a strong respect and following. The band has toured relentlessly since beginning, their dynamic live shows alongside previous releases, The Man With Two Heads in 2010 and the Leech EP of last year, pulling in a continually growing eager attention. The band has shared the stages with the likes of with InMe and Supergrass already with recent months seeing them take their impressive sounds into Europe. With the release of the Jonny Renshaw (DevilSoldHisSoul, Evita, Deaf Havana) produced new EP on October 1st the last piece of ammunition to trigger wide recognition is surely in place, the release set to fully ignite the passions of melodic rock fans nationwide and further afield.

Mortdelamer top and tail the release with their two weak songs…though when we say weak we mean powerful, dramatic, and senses spoiling. It is just the towering presence and invention of what explodes out in between which leaves them a little in the shade, though they still leave most other tracks to be unleashed elsewhere this year floundering in awe.

The opener Pieces And Reasons steps out from behind a soundbite to stand tall with feisty bulging riffs and demanding rhythms. It is a restrained assault with the vocals of Sutton mesmerising whilst the glorious harmonies which frame her voice leave one smouldering in contentment. As it opens up to its full height the song offers blistering sonics to dazzle the senses and an intensity to weaken knees, all this though through a still controlled and even paced energy. The song is a great start if arguably unadventurous; though that realisation comes in hindsight after the following songs captivate ear, senses and thoughts into an addiction.

The following I’ve Got My Backbone lifts one to the feet within seconds, its vibrant breath and beckoning hooks a hypnotic tease to light plenty of fires within. The riffs and melodic strikes of Sutton have a weight and intimidation which is rare in the genre these days but never challenge in the harshest way to leave the wonderfully melodic presence fighting for survival or effect. The bass of Bishop is a muscular companion whilst Ivens raps the ear with skilled precision and not to be denied intent. The track is excellent, a keen riot to fall in league with.

Things step up yet another level with the stunning song Fade. The track is sheer contagion, its quizzical hook simply magnetic whilst Sutton oozes emotive class with her vocals within the evolving evocative sounds. The fluid change of breath is impressive and only adds further depth to the ingenuity in place, without doubt the best song on the release.

The Hide though makes a strong challenge for that claim with its haunting aural whispers around the enveloping shadows and brooding energy. There is a strong Deftones lilt to the song, its slightly progressive nature an intrusive pleasure and provocative taunt. The snarling bass is an excellent contrast to more golden vocal harmonies whilst the beats keep one caged within the expressive dark caresses of the song. It is magnificent and again shows the diversity of Mortdelamer and why they are so exciting.

The closing Searching For Safety returns to a more standard rock structure and sound though it still offers plenty to intrigue and entice nothing but respect its way, even if it pales against the previous three towering creations.

Mortdelamer is a band all should pay close attention to and Words Within The Wires one of the most thrilling releases this year. This band will make great strides in 2013, the sparks start here.
