Ghosts of Social Networks – Outside The Wheel

From impressing with their debut AA-sided single Love Potion/ Mockingbirds last year, UK band Ghosts of Social Networks has gone from strength to strength in writing, sound, and attention. Earlier this year, No Going Back left its predecessor and the band’s second single Comeback Kid in the shade, a feat replicated now by Outside The Wheel, easily the outfit’s finest moment to date.

Created by and based around the craft and music of Manchester based Nathan Till, Ghosts of Social Networks create musical and emotional drama within their songs and no more striking than the suggestive theatre shaping Outside the Wheel. Again a song produced by Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Robert Plant, The Sherlocks), the new single winds a spicy groove around ears first, it’s tempting persona soon backed by tenaciously prowling rhythms the warm and expressive vocals of Till. At the same time, a haunting air rises and flows across the song, bringing a sense of The Mission to the brooding, politically charged encounter.

Building crescendos which erupt into a fiery chorus soaked in its own espionage of drama and creatively flirtatious escapades, moments with a touch of Bond to them; the song simply ignites ears and imagination not forgetting real pleasure.

There are some songs which leave a lingering mark on thoughts and emotions; Outside The Wheel one of them leaving Till and Ghosts of Social Networks a real task to match its majesty next time around.

Dirty Jane – Boogie Monster

There is a new hypnotic rumble brewing in the belly of the Birmingham underground scene and it goes by the name of Dirty Jane. This salaciously flirtatious garage punk ‘n’ roll filly is not exactly brand new, the British trio emerging in 2014 but they have just made their national introduction with debut single Boogie Monster, a track with a primal swagger which simply infests body and spirit.

Consisting of vocalist/guitarist Jack Brown, bassist John Beadsmore, and drummer Elliot Morris, Dirty Jane has become an eagerly supported and talked about proposition within the Midlands music scene; earning a fine reputation for their energetic live presence amidst shows alongside the likes of The Strypes, The Sherlocks, The Computers, The Dirty Nil and most recently Hvmm. As mentioned, Boogie Monster is the band’s first fingering of national attention and surely lustful reactions such the infectious devilry breeding the single.

Fusing garage punk and punk rock with fifties rock ‘n’ roll, the Dirty Jane sound prowls ears and psyche like a fusion of The Cramps, The Phantom, Dick Venom and The Terrortones, and Eighteen Nightmares At the Lux; a creative breed of temptation which instantly has ears and appetite inflamed as the single sonically and vocally shatters the silence. Within another breath, rhythms are prowling the senses with a lively almost predacious gait casting catchy menace for Brown to vocally embrace. With insatiable hooks equally grabbing ears all along his guitar’s swarthy grooves, a delicious grumble to Beadsmore’s bass alongside, and the whole of the band courting thick involvement with their vocal roars, the song demands lusty participation, Morris’ tenaciously swinging beats extra incentive.

Produced by Gavin Monaghan, Boogie Monster is quite simply irresistible; its psych rock essences icing on the diablerie escaping the band and if a sign of things to come, the beginning of major mischief and adventure for and from Dirty Jane.

Of Kings and Captains – Ain’t Got The Heart

Swiftly proving they are no one hit wonders, British pop rockers Of Kings and Captains follow up the rousing exploits and success of recent single Jack My Boy with another spirit stoking, body exciting exploit going by the name of Ain’t Got The Heart. As its predecessor, the new single is taken from the equally impressing Give ‘Em Hell Son EP, itself evidence that the Stourbridge outfit’s sound is loaded with infectious hooks and instinctive imagination.

Sprung and driven by the enterprise of lead vocalist/guitarist Luke Wassell, guitarist JD Lomas, and bassist Dean Greatbatch, Ain’t Got The Heart quickly entangles ears in its opening melody, it the seed to an energetic and accomplished stroll ripe with power pop energy and indie pop hookery. Recorded with producers Gavin Monaghan (The Twang, Editors, Nizlopi) and Joseph Murray, the song swiftly has feet shuffling, hips swinging, and ears hungry as its Fall Out Boy meets The Fratellis revelry consumes all before.

The song continues to infest and thrill body and spirit, cementing the promise and growing uniqueness of a sound which has quickly come over as a freshly discovered old friend with each and every song, especially in the two singles from Of Kings and Captains providing 2016 with two of its brightest moments.

With new sounds in the works and an appearance at Glastonbudget   2017 confirmed, it is easy to suggest that Of Kings and Captains are about to really explode upon the Uk rock scene.

Tess of the Circle – I’m Not Ashamed

With their outstanding album Amplify, released earlier this year, still drawing attention and acclaim the way of Tess of the Circle, the UK band’s new single just confirms its irresistible qualities and caps a major ground-breaking year for the Oxford hailing outfit.

Formed by and based around the songwriting singer/guitarist Tess Jones, Tess of the Circle is a collective of musical and creative talent which has really caught the wider imagination with second album Amplify, the striking successor to the equally well-received debut Thorns. With lead guitarist Lee Clifton, bassist Ben Drummond, and drummer Paul Stone alongside Jones on the Gavin Monaghan produced full-length and now the new single which comes from the, Tess of the Circle is awakening broader waves of eager appetites for their melody rich rock ‘n’ roll, something I’m Not Ashamed can only add impetus to.

There is a Numan-esque glaze to the initial feel of sound escaping the speakers and Jones’ emotively delivered vocals, a spice remaining to appeal as the track blossoms into a fiery blaze of blues kissed, grunge toned rock ‘n’ roll. Subsequent dips into mellow climes are built on the same eventful melodically suggestive enterprise which shapes the whole of the song, while the bolder feistier body of invention around them provides hazier almost psych rock spun waves of imagination to eagerly surf.

I’m Not Ashamed is one of the numerous treats making up Amplify and alone as their new single, a potent lure for newcomers to explore the increasingly impressive creative world of Tess of the Circle.

Of Kings and Captains – Jack My Boy

Ahead of their new EP Give ’em Hell Son, British pop rockers Of Kings and Captains have released new single Jack My Boy, a mercilessly infectious slice of robust rock ‘n’ roll lying somewhere between The Pirates, Eddie and the Hot Rods, and The Wildhearts. It is hard to imagine that the Black Country hailing band could have found a more rousing teaser for their new EP, the new single taken from it one of those proposals which instinctively grips ears, voice, and bodies easily enlisting their eager involvement in short time.

Stourbridge bred, Of Kings and Captains released their debut album in 2015 to eager reactions; its success backed up by a potent live reputation which has seen the band share stages with the likes of McFly and Kids in Glass Houses among many and recently undertake a five date stadium tour with Bon Jovi. The foursome of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Luke Wassell, lead guitarist Joshua Lomas, bassist Dean Greatbatch, and drummer Kieran Lock linked up with producer Gavin Monaghan (The Twang, Editors, Niplozi) and Joseph Murray for Give ’em Hell Son and if Jack My Boy is anything to go by, with thrilling success.

A song according to Wassell which is “…about self-confidence and defying people who doubt you! it’s all about sticking to your guns and being yourself regardless of how people might put you down. It’s about being individual and kicking back against the norm“, Jack My Boy has all attention leaning its way from the initial lure of drum enticement. Lock’s magnetic rhythms are quickly joined by an anthemic bassline and eager twang loaded riffs, they in turn turning to an array of fifties seeded hooks as Wassell’s tones whips up even more infectious bait to the already catchy encounter. From there the track continues to lead the listener, drawing them towards seriously virulent choruses, they irresistible peaks in one, from start to finish, spirit arousing stomp.

It takes just one listen to be firmly involved in the song with every encounter after drawing keen and full participation. If Jack My Body is a sign of things to come with Give ’em Hell Son, the EP is a must.

The Sun Hotel – A Quest For Knowledge

With the recently released A Quest For Knowledge EP already luring stronger and keener attention the way of The Sun Hotel, the British alternative rock trio is poised to pile on the temptation with a new single July 1st. The song is the title track from their current EP, a song which bounces along with devilment in its adventure and pure magnetism in its boisterous attitude and character.

With members hailing from Shropshire and North Wales, The Sun Hotel began on 2014 as a folk duo of guitarist/vocalist Jon Hamer and drummer Ed Brown. As its line-up evolved with the addition of vocalist/bassist Joe Warham in the February of 2015, so the band’s sound grew into the striking and fiercely engaging proposal offered by the new single inspired by classic and modern rock influences. Last year also saw the release of a self-titled and self-produced EP in August, a collection of demos backing up an acclaim earning live presence. This past March, the threesome recorded their new EP with producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Sherlocks, Robert Plant) at Magic Garden Studios UK, an encounter which leaps at ears with creative relish, and in no more persuasive form than in forthcoming single, A Quest For Knowledge.

The track instantly engages ears with its guitar clang and rhythmic clash yet the hearty melodic warmth and endeavour which soon blossoms is already there laying its initial bait. Quite quickly the song has thoughts dipping into some nostalgic comparisons, the track carrying a scent of seventies/eighties power pop/new wave which simply sparks the imagination. In some ways there is an element of The Might Lemon Drops and Purple Hearts to the song but similarly, while creating its own individual character, current bands like The Jacques and The Sherlocks are hues in the mix.

There is also a great fiery edge to A Quest for Knowledge which simply adds to the enthralling theatre of the song and if new to The Sun Hotel, there is no better way to approach them than through this irresistible single.

A Quest for Knowledge, the single, is released July 1st.

Tess of the Circle – Amplify

Though a trio of exceptional singles have already provided a powerful and thrilling insight into the new album from British band Tess of the Circle, it still has not stopped Amplify from surprising and impressing beyond expectations. The eleven tracks making up the band’s second full-length offers virulent roars and irresistible croons, and a collection of rock ‘n’ roll fuelled songs which leap with zeal and passion at ears and imagination.

Rising in 2013 within the British Independent Collective, an artistic union of friends and talent in various mediums formed by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tess Jones, Tess Of The Circle soon sparked potent attention from fans and media alike with debut album Thorns. Jones’ songs soon found regular airplay which has continued since, especially with those recent singles. The past couple of years have been especially busy and successful for the band; that national radio support leading to a double figure amount of live sessions backed by a stage presence which has seen the band play five shows at Glastonbury, sub-headline the 2015 Acoustic Festival of Britain’s second stage, and headline Bear Gryll’s Festival in London. Such the might and majesty of the Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Robert Planet, Lemmy, Ryan Adams, Grace Jones) produced Amplify, all before seems like just being the prelude to bigger and bolder things for the Oxford hailing band; bigger success sparked by a release which it would not surprise if it emerged as an album of the year contender for a great many come December.

With guitarist Lee Clifton, bassist Ben Drummond, and drummer Paul Stone, alongside Jones, Tess Of The Circle get right down to business with opener Love Is the Drug That You Crave. As potent and contagious as first time heard as a single, the song is soon filling ears with the distinctive voice of Jones and scythes of guitar within an electronic shimmer. The relatively controlled start soon erupts into a feisty burst of energy and bait soaked hooks; a two prong coaxing repeated before the track hits a tenacious and rousing stroll. It is quite simply a blaze of melodic and rhythmic infectiousness; a bracing stomp only given greater depth by the great backing vocals around fiery textures cast by guitars and keys.

It takes little time for the variety within Amplify to emerge; from The Cars meets John Butler Trio feel of the first song, a Gary Numan air colours the following I’m Not Ashamed, though it is a spice predominantly cast by the vocal tone of Jones. Nevertheless, a great range of emotive and rhythmic shadows wrap the energetic canter of the song, adding weight and intrigue to the hazier lures of guitars and harmonies. As its predecessor, it takes little time to get fully involved with the grungy encounter, a swift persuasion matched by You Take Me Out of My Head and its thumping slice of bullish hard rock and anthemic rock ‘n’ roll. From its fiery jangle and imposing rhythms, the song demands attention, rewarding the submission with addictive hooks and beguiling grooves courted by the delicious throb of Drummond’s bass. Riffs are equally as formidable and persuasive; the track the perfect blend of aggression and seduction with blues enterprise for further drama.

A chance to relax is provided by the emotive croon of Believe (Into Her Arms), though ears and imagination are as busy as ever in being beguiled by the outstanding encounter. With blues hues lacing the guitars and a gravelly texture enjoyably coating Jones’ vocals, the song mesmerises as skittish rhythms entice. Even in its balladry, the track offers a catchiness which is impossible to resist as our hips and throats can attest to before they are given an even greater workout by the Nirvana-esque incitement of Mother Daughter Son. The track leaps and pokes with matching intensity; stirring up appetite and spirit with its slightly volatile revelry in a persuasion more than matched by Digging At My Bones. Like a tango, the song twists and turns, ebbs and flows in its unpredictable drama and enterprise. Emotionally more than physically tempestuous, the track uncages a theatre of sound and invention which gets right under the skin, tapping into the instincts for heart rousing rock ‘n’ roll.

The excellent Face the Changes flirts with a REM scented adventure next, its rock pop contagion a gentle but inescapable tempting, whilst Drowning Without You as good as steals the whole show with its dark and swampy rock ‘n’ roll. The brooding twang of the guitar is manna for the ear with extra spice provided by the provocative mystique infested melodies. The song nags the senses, seduces the imagination, and flirts with body and soul from start to finish, standing as album favourite with consummate ease even in the company of seriously impressing companions.

The heart blues serenade of Summer Rain is next, holding ears and enjoyment firm before allowing The Waves Break Us Down to share its intimate ballad wrapped in emotive strings and vocal melancholy. Both songs make compelling persuasions whilst adding fresh shades of creative colour to Amplify; one final hue offered by the closing beauty of This Higher Ground and its folk rock embrace of intimate sentiment and lively endeavour.

Amplify is quite sensational, not only living up to the promise of its temptation laying singles but revealing numerous more sides and imagination to the songwriting and sound of Tess of the Circle. It is not a must check out album recommendation we offer but  a must have suggestion.
