Semitt Falls – I Know Bear Heads

Like a great many we were impressed and excited by Monkey See, Monkey Do Doo, the debut album from UK band Semitt Falls. It was an unpredictable and inventive twisting of flavours and imagination which marked out a band with the potential to rise to major things. It also set a high benchmark for the band to follow but for the only time they meet expectations the Stockport quartet easily take that plateau and lose it in the wake of their scintillating new EP I Know Bear Heads. The four track release is a tremendous weave of captivating invention and busily flavoured enterprise which makes the earlier album look like mere foreplay to the main event. Fusing electro metal with more of its muscular cousins and then aligning them with a breath-taking web of genres such as drum and bass, hip-hop, dub, reggae, and dubstep, the band conjures a kaleidoscope of sound which tantalises and seduces whilst sparking a riot in the passions.

Semitt Falls was formed in 2012 by Paul Kendrick (guitar, vocals and programming) and Jay Kane (vocals, synths) after the demise of their previous band Halt Under Heavy Fire. Linking up with ex-Fortune Favours Nothing member Danny Houghton (drums) who since the EP release has left the band, and subsequently ex- Son of Shinobi Craig Gilroy (bass , vocals) after a few line-up changes, the quartet evolved an initially post-hardcore sound into a more electronic rock sculpted persuasion, a sound which has continued to move and change with every song and release. The release of Monkey See, Monkey Do Doo in May of last year thrust the band into a wider focus of attention with its intensive diversity and mouthwatering adventure but as mentioned it now seems just an appetiser for greater things from the band, a mightier exploration starting to confidently flex its muscle and invention upon I Know Bear Heads. With a line-up for the EP seeing bassist Sidge Rushton replacing the departed Gilroy, Semitt Falls have unveiled a riotous temptation which just will not take no for an answer.

The EP seizes ears, imagination, and passion right away with opener FIRE!FIRE!FIRE!, a track also featuring G.R.I.M. Folderfrontman Lance Hargreaves. Funnelling through a distantly starting corridor, riffs and vocals emerge in a flood of energy and transfixing sonic confrontation. Once fully exposed and immediately into its rampant stride the song sees mixed vocal squalls igniting the senses whilst resourceful riffery and a rhythmic cage sculpt compelling narratives to secure a swiftly brewed appetite for the song’s presence. Ripe with swipes of hip hop vocals, dubstep conjuring, and a metal bred antagonism the track is an irresistible rampage merging the electronic addictiveness of Pendulum with the punk metal of The Prodigy and Skindred. It is a thrilling introduction to the release breeding a keen hunger and greed for what is to come.

The following We Be Dinosaur takes little time in offering something different, a quality repeated from their previous album, every song a unique and individual character and proposition to the next. Opening with an evocative electronic caress with shards of crystalline causticity, the track at first has an Enter Shikari like coaxing to its offering though it is soon evolved into a stomp of ska and reggae fusion guided by excellent darker vocals and a delicious trombone croon from Rushton and Andy Jones. Adding some punk rapaciousness and electronic teasing to the impressive spread of vocals and exhilarating invention, the track roams and incites the passions like a mix of King Prawn, Hadouken, and Daft Punk with adding essences of Dizraeli and the Small Gods. It a glorious landscape of pleasure and imagination which takes the impressive start of the release up another notch or two in thought and creative wantonness.

The title track brings a less urgent presence to tempt the senses, vocals and guitars showing a more deliberate restraint to their enticement which the keys and vocals wrap in an evocation of sound and absorbing soak of emotion. With samples also adding their unique touch to the flowing musical narrative it is a strong and engaging encounter but one just failing to match the heady heights and quality of its predecessors. Nevertheless the song embraces focus and appetite tightly warming them up for the closing exploits of Global Warning. The final track retains the smouldering charms of the previous song whilst inviting the more predacious energy and snarl of the first two tracks, the result another incitement to launch a fresh breath of ardour for band and release even if again despite its glowing elegance and magnetic craft it just misses hitting those early plateaus.

Immediately a gripping and entrancing tempest of imaginative excitement, the EP just gets better and stronger with every traverse of its easily impressive body. Semitt Falls has all the potential and promise to be the next big thing in electro rock experimentation, something rigorously confirmed by I Know Bear Heads.

faltered – Fortune Favours

Not for the first time it seems this year, we are offering a comparison for an emerging band to one of the UK’s finest aggressive rock bands Reuben. Sadly no more, though as so many we still have dreams of that to be reunited announcement, it seems the Surrey trio is inciting and influencing more and more new bands. Northern Wales alternative rock duo faltered is another appearing to reap those seeds for their own distinctive and adventurous idea. Consisting of brothers Daniel (guitars, vocals) and Conor Cahalane (drums, percussion, lead vocals), the band release their new mini-album Fortune Favours September 2nd, a collection of songs which challenge, tease, and at times disappoint, but all come with a depth of promise and imagination which leaves you recruited to and eager to watch their evolution and future creations.

Taking inspirations from the likes of Biffy Clyro, Muse, Hundred Reasons, Vex Red, Fightstar, of course Reuben and more, the pair from deciding to form a band took little time in moving forward by rehearsing, writing, and releasing their debut EP Victorian Post Mortem Photography last year. With its full of promise presence well received as also have been their live performances, a growing fan base was instigated as they began working on new songs which have emerged as Fortune Favours. It is a release which is guaranteed to grab attention, yes it has flaws, some loud in the ear, but there is never a moment that you want slip away quietly from its offering or lose focus.

Opening instrumental Leave It Out makes a potent entrance, crisp beats soon joined by a funk drenched dance of guitar and throaty Faltered-Cover Artworkbass before it is all intensified with a blaze of sinew driven energy and adventure. Courting the senses with its swagger the piece is a magnetic lure to the album and immediately shows the prowess and skill of faltered in creating imaginative and addictive sounds. It’s relatively gentle temptation is then pushed aside by the muscular Fortune Favours The Needy. Again drums lead in the charge with discord lit almost post punk like slashes of guitar and noise rock rapaciousness assaulting the ear. Instantly thoughts of Reuben make their call but the brothers then keep the listener off guard by slipping into a melodic alternative rock restraint which they swiftly shift between and entwine into a pleasing and intriguing emotive narrative. It makes for a strong and rewarding start to the album which has the appetite hungry for the next song.

Worth The Wait coaxes the ear with guitar before expelling a blaze of sonic and acidic might which again only reminds of the previously mention now demised band. With the guitars raising the temperature of the air and the rhythms caging song and thoughts in a provocative mesh, the track is an exciting and perpetually twisting persuasion expanding the already strong pleasure reaped so far.

The following Pulled Over emerges as an intensive emotive reflection which without reaching the heights of the previous songs inspires ear and imagination to embrace its temptation hungrily. Slow tender wraps of melodic caresses intermittently punctuated with hard strikes of rhythmic prodding and scything riffs make a full suasion which is lifted further when the song slips into a delicious reined in stomp which is ingenious and irresistible before subsequently unleashing another furnace of emotional and sonic intensity. Unfortunately for the track to temper its success there are moments where barely hinted at previously, the vocals go astray at times with their notes and quality. The continual changes and erupting fire of sound for the main prevents any real damage but it is a portent of things to come on the album.

     Please Don’t Take This The Wrong Way makes a dramatic and stunning entrance to emphasise the rich talent in songwriting and sound the band has. The almost eighties like, think ABC, guitars are met hand in hand buy a glorious sax croon which takes mere seconds to spark the passions before merging with towering riffs and rhythms. Settling into smouldering intent and melodic warmth with invention and refined enterprise, the song musically paints a colour rich evocation though the vocals again strain against their limits a little. Another good romp of a stroll breaks out to energise things for the fiery finale which simultaneously thrills and deflates appreciation.

Its successor If This Is A Joke Then I’m Not Laughing is another strong moment on the album; caustic guitar swipes and cantankerous riffs initially scorching the senses before a jazzy breath creates another eager vaunt. Once more you think Reuben though as ever faltered twist it into their potent style. The song is an abrasive treat which leaps around with numerous turns and unpredictability but still at times those vocals rub the ear the wrong way, which is openly a problem in the closing Thanks A Million. A soft rock bred track with pressuring intensity giving it depth from the start, the song musically is another accomplished draw on the ear but vocally…well let us just say that the guys seem in a constant quarrel with their notes and the listener’s satisfaction. It is a shame as the song has like the others, the charm and persuasion to light the passions especially with the wonderful addition of strings.

It is hard to resist suggesting the band looks at bringing in a dedicated vocalist and concentrating on the music, which already they are making very impressive waves with. Despite that it has to be said Fortune Favours makes for an enjoyable encounter with some moments of massive quality and incredible promise, so much so that keeping a close eye on faltered is a definite.

Ascending Northern Wales Alternative duo ‘faltered’ nationally release their debut mini-album ‘Fortune Favours’ through all digital outlets on Monday 2nd September.
 
From a small, unassuming village in Wales, come ‘faltered’. United by a love of alternative and post hardcore bands, blood brothers Daniel (Guitars, Vocals) and Conor Cahalane (Drums, Percussion and lead Vocals) fuse the heavy aggression of early Nirvana meshed with the twisted groove of Biffy Clyro; yet the dynamo duo make their own mark, evidenced in the shape of their brand new hotly-tipped mini-album, ‘Fortune Favours’.

Having scoured the local vicinity for suitable band members, all to no avail, brothers Conor and Dan Cahalane decided to form the band as a duo and swiftly went about rehearsing and recording their debut EP in 2012 called ‘Victorian Post Mortem Photography’. Well received shows throughout the North West and a growing fan base soon followed as the assiduous combo continued to pen further songs for their next release.
Now the band have completed work on their new mini-album ‘Fortune Favours’ and it’s the perfect soundtrack for the Summer; that’s assuming you like the idea of Biffy Clyro handling the BBQ, Hundred Reasons cleaning the pool, and Reuben manning the bar! From the intriguing math-rock rhythms of their opener ‘Leave It Out’, to the off kilter hard-hitting riffage of ‘Fortune Favours The Needy’, to the abundantly melodic ‘Thanks A Million’, faltered have proven themselves inventive and accessible, and have amalgamated a sound that is poignant and ambitious. The post-hardcore crew have assembled a live line up and have UK dates in the pipeline for later this year; just watch them climb.
