Battalion Zośka – Self Titled

Like all instinctive punk fans seventies punk and eighties hardcore will always fuel the passions no matter what major moments which have and will continue to follow that defining moment in time. There is no doubting that it is the same for Philadelphia hailing Battalion Zośka; all the evidence raising and roaring aggressive irritation within the band’s self-titled debut album. But there is no mistaking that its 13 slices of sonic and defiant belligerence are far more than echoes of inspirations and other’s glories. The album is a fresh breath and striking protagonist embracing the seeds which fired up us all decades past.

Formed in 2018, Battalion Zośka features members of hardcore punk outfits Violent Society and Combat Crisis and their sound provides a politically charged trespass as aggressively catchy as it is emotionally dissonant. Rhythms unapologetically bite as riffs harass and curse alongside similarly tetchy vocals, the hooks and enterprise conjured just as fractious and irresistible within one magnificent, rousing debut.

The quintet of Pat, Jim, Johnny, Jonas, and Milo set down the tone and character of the album from its first breath, opener A Country Divided rhythmically teasing attention before being entwined in alluring wires of guitar. The song soon hits its stride, threat and disobedience lining every note and subsequent syllable as inbred catchiness equally shapes its rousing incitement. With a great whiff of Angelic Upstarts meets The Lurkers to it and featuring the first of two guest appearance from Black Flag/ Misfits guitarist Dez Cadena, the track lone tells you all you need to know about the band’s sound and album, both swiftly compelling assaults.

Arm Everyone follows bringing an even thicker dissent and trespass to the senses; its hardcore breeding hungry and ill-tempered in its uprising while the album’s title track thrusts forward with rampant muscle and uncompromising resistance as an Exploited meets UK Subs hued subversion arouses. It is fair to say that together the three tracks had ears and appetite enslaved but the third truly sealed the deal.

Next up, Heather was no light weight in that union either, its strands of melodic wiring a delicious itch in the rich infectious nagging of the track. The song brings another guest to the release in the ever potent craft of Neil Newton, the Angelic Upstarts guitarist also giving fiercer flaming to Moral Coward two encounters later, that song a dirtily cantankerous seventies ripe invasion. In between the equally outstanding Island of the Lost Souls stamped its commanding authority on ears, every rhythmic swing an enticing bitch slap and chord a caustic tempting as it builds towards a chorus which just had body and throat bounding forward.

The subsequent assails of Oi! By Numbers and Sold & Bought did nothing to lessen the album’s grip; the first, an undisguised attack within a familiar yet unique sonic pillory with its successor a virulent Crisis-esque transgression. Each simply pummelled the spot before being rapaciously matched by the esurient assault and arousing of 80’s Kid, the song sharing the second ear grabbing appearance of Cadena.

A pop punk essence helps blossom even greater temptation within Once Again, its untamed Vibrators meets Adicts breeding an anthemic tonic for the spirit while the equally galvanic rallying of No More and Scum of the Streets with its feral indeed predacious stalking and sonic hounding only accentuated the impressive and inspiring body and disagreement of the album.

Completed by the carousing punk ‘n’ roll of The Beer Song, the Battalion Zośka album is simply punk rock at its most honest, uncomplicated yet imaginatively bred best. Expect to hear a lot more of the band as once its full-length stirs up a punk uprising of attention and lusty support they will have little choice but to submit to demand.

Füneral Käb – Self Titled EP

A noise fuelled collision with the senses from which only a hunger for more can be the outcome, the self-titled EP from US punk rockers Füneral Käb is one of those treats which no matter the warnings your parents ingrained, you ignore and give your soul to. Unashamedly hostile and cantankerous, enthusiastically abrasing and ravenous, the release as the band’s presence, is a delicious effrontery on senses and common decency. If punk rock with the swagger and devilry of dirty rock ‘n’ roll is your recipe to filth encrusted bliss, then Füneral Käb and their raw and sonically dishevelled release is a must.

Füneral Käb was the inspiration of vocalist Derek Krisitan Nordlof (bassist with Confuzatron and Orange Platypus) who with bassist Mark Vance Arroyo (ex-The Moistboyz) started up the band around 2011. The pair swiftly brought in guitarist/vocalist David Rangel (bassist of Black Earth and guitarist/vocalist of Orange Platypus) next, before after a few drummers completing the line-up with Ben Scott (Vermicous Canids). Most of the band already had connections through their previous exploits at some time or other, a kinship which if we take their debut as evidence, seems to fire up the antagonistic mischief and fury of their sound with relish.

Straight away the EP is crawling over the psyche and stirring up the imagination with opener Church Maus. It coaxes attention with a rugged mix of guitar and bass predation bound in a further sonic lure as beats jab with simple venom. It is a slow crawl of an entrance which is almost leering at its target before exploding into a caustic and fiery rampage of punk riffs and heavy footed provocation guided by an excellent blend of raw vocals from Derek K backed by Rangel. Ridiculously contagious and intimidatingly testing with sharper hooks than found in abattoir, and with a similar blood lust, the track is punk rock at its feverish best, an inescapable toxicity for all genre fans.

The following Christian Sheep is steeped in even richer old school punk animosity and flavouring. It is a sneering blaze of pungent riffs and searing grooves riddled with inhospitable rhythmic provocation, and again another virulent persuasion. There is a definite English punk breeding to the Texan’s sound which is certainly evident on the second song but also loudly whispering in the dirty rock ’ n’ roll song of the next up . . . And Now You’re Shit. Flaming with bluesy enterprise and heavy rock tenacity but equally equipped with punk spawned bait, it is a romantic primal assault to get feet and vocal chords engaged, though just a taster of the bigger anthemic temptation to come with 1717 17th Street. Rolling in on a devilish rhythmic saunter and sonic tempting, the song is soon spewing its melodic acidity around like aural confetti before settling into another impossibly addictive stomp which is as much a rage vocally and sonically as it an epidemic persuasion. Addressing issue of drugs with its title taken from the address of the high school where 15 kids overdosed on a bad batch of heroin, the track is a funked up, hard rock punk shuffle and quite irresistible.

The release closes with the grouchy, dirt smothered HEY Hollywood, a track with a healthy essence of Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 to its unpolished and infectiously unsavoury beauty. It is a brute of a final track revealing another twist to the varied punk and heavy rock sound the band toys with and twists into their own severe and thrilling trespass on the senses.

Füneral Käb has a sound which embraces the punk ages; it has the unbridled spite of a Sex Pistols or The Adicts, the confrontational hunger of a Suicidal Tendencies or Exploited, and the warped devilry of a Melvins or Dope Body. If any of those tick your boxes or punk at its abrasive best in general, then why are you still here… go explore this great band.

The Old-timers – Be Reconciled

Hailing from South Africa, punk band The Old-timers has forged themselves a quite potent spotlight not only in Christian punk but the punk underground as a whole with their releases. Now the trio return with their finest moment yet, the Be Reconciled EP. With a broader sound and inventive nature, the release catches the imagination with infectious slices of raw and organic punk rock and a premise which asks questions of thoughts. The band’s fourth release, the EP is simply another open step forward in the presence and sound of The Old-timers.

The band was formed in 2011 by Cape Town vocalist Dave Emerson and Port Elizabeth guitarist/bassist Donovan de Necker, its seeds first sown when they met whilst the latter visited the home town of the former whilst on holiday. From the pair’s unplanned meeting they found plenty to connect over, punk rock being one big love for both. Writing and sharing songs over the vast distances between them through technology, the band emerged with a demo Punk’s Not Dead! Nor Are We!, which brought them to the attention of Christian Punk label Thumper Punk Records. Soon after its release the duo recruited Californian drummer Matt Lagusis whilst Thumper Records released the band’s following impressive releases, the 2012 album Soli Deo Gloria and the Spiritus Sanctus at the end of last year. Both releases showed the continuing growth in sound and songwriting, an evolution pushed again by Be Reconciled.

The new EP is a concept release, its premise following the story of a life finding the light from a dark destructive place, “from sinner to repentance to reconciliation through Jesus.” That journey can be translated into a search we all embrace at some point in our lives within or outside of religion, and in its infusing of keys, a capella harmonies, and spoken poetry within old school fuelled punk rampages, Be Reconciled is a masterfully riveting encounter which works on ears and emotions. It starts with Hole in My Heart, a track which instantly lights ears with its rising persistence of riffs and stomping rhythms. The song, as the vocals, roars with a rapacious intensity and air as the guitar of de Necker expels caustic riffs and enticing hooks whilst his bass prowls the song with a devilish intent. It is an outstanding start to the release, the song’s NOFX like raucousness and Exploited like intensity bound in grooves and hooks which simply infests the imagination, whilst the inventive pounding from Lagusis and vocal demand of Emerson round off the potent lure of the song.

The spoken poetry of Blessings Out of Buffetings is next, voice and haunting keys the protagonist accompanied by percussive taunting. It is a track which alone you would say is for those of faith but within the narrative of the EP and linking the opener and the following Hope for the Rejected, it works well in the context of the story and unimposingly. The third track flies at ears with a raw scrub of riffs and bass driven by rabid beats. With group vocals which works a treat the track at times reminds of early Shelter, its grazing breath veined by a contagious groove which simply entices the appetite further and without reserve. Another highlight of the release, the track provokes, incites, and thrills in equal urgency and strength.

The bruising sounds of Father God I Wonder excites and challenges senses next, the track recruiting the incendiary essences which grabbed attention within previous releases and loading them with a richer infectious bait and instinctive ferocity. It is one minute of prime punk rock which thrusts its sound and narrative irresistibly through ears into thoughts and emotions. Its triumph is matched by the riveting The Joy of Reconciliation. The song starts with that a capella offering mentioned before, a striking union of the band’s voices which works so well you almost throw a sigh of disappointment when the song erupts into its punk rapacity. It soon has those thoughts forgotten though as it squalls and stomps aggressively across the senses for another hunger feeding slab of punk passion.

The closing Ambassadors as the second track is a spoken word within a keys embrace, a conclusion to the narrative which also like the earlier song links in well when taken as part of the journey but for those without a feeling for the religious side of things you sense it may not get the chance too often to make its suasion in being the final track. It has to be reinforced though that as all their releases, The Old-timers presents an encounter which is for all punk fans, just this time it is the band at its most adventurous and dynamic sounding to date which is reason enough to spend plenty of time with Be Reconciled.
