Kill The Ideal – Heritage

Ferociously melodic and raucously captivating, it is fair to say that our introduction to UK alternative rockers Kill The Ideal has been a fiercely enjoyable infestation of ears and appetite. It came through the band’s debut EP Heritage, an invigorating four song ride of anthemic proportions cast with intimate passion and explosive energy. It is an encounter which roars and croons with equal tenacity, very often simultaneously, and leaves a real hunger for more of its fresh invention and warm familiarity.

Formed in 2010, the Boston quartet release Heritage off a highly successful 2014 which saw the band light up stages alongside the likes of Lost Alone, Lonely The Brave, and Hawthorne Heights, shows adding to their CV of playing with bands such as Nine Black Alps, The First, Climates, and Emp!re. The foursome also left a mark on BBC Introducing in East Midlands before heading into the studio to create their first EP. Recorded with producer Lee Batiuk (Deaf Havana), Heritage is the potential spark to broader national awareness, and such its impressive body there is no doubting fires will be lit in a great many.

The EP’s title track stokes attention first, a raw stroke of guitar licking at ears initially before it all boils up into a pleasingly fiery stroll littered by the jabbing beats of drummer Jordan Bell and veined with a great dark bassline from Luke Farmer. Though the edge to the riffs is still slightly caustic there is a sharper and spicier tone to the subsequent melodies and hooks of guitarists Ross Gallagher and Ash Wilson hereon in, whilst the latter’s vocals bring an expressive and potent heart to the increasingly compelling encounter. The track is seemingly always on the precipice of a riot yet manages to bind its unbridled passion for a controlled yet incendiary anthem of a proposition. The song is a gem of a start to the release, an offering unleashing the addictive lure of a Lower Than Atlantis with the melodic fire of a Thirty Seconds to Mars and the impassioned angst of a Billy Talent.

Kill The Ideal - Heritage (EP Artwork)   There is no lessening of pleasure with its successor either. Higher again enters on a single caress of guitar though this time Wilson is there with the first breath to begin unveiling the song’s narrative. Once more it is an engaging start which swiftly becomes a contagion as Bell’s swings thump away with addictive bait whilst hooks and harmonies flame within the striking frame of his incitement. Fluid moments of melodic seducing only accentuate the potency and aggression of the band’s explosive tenacity, the anthemic virulence reminding of Always The Quiet Ones as the ability of Kill The Ideal to entwine tempestuous musical bellowing with gentle melody rich reflections simply impresses.

It would be fair to say that after two tracks the band had thoughts and emotions won over, leaving the remaining temptations of The Fire and My Friend an easier persuasion to make. Both though take nothing for granted and uncage their own individual inventive storms of sound and imagination. The first of the two probably feels the most recognisable of all the songs, offering more expected elements but still forcibly convinces with great jagged riffs and an excellent vocal union across the band whilst its successor is a slice of seriously catchy and similarly impassioned melody soaked rock ‘n’ roll with a roar to its heart and ruggedness to its energy.

Both tracks complete in fine and riveting style one outstanding release; in fact it is hard to imagine that Kill The Ideal could have made a better entrance into the wider spotlight of the British music scene than Heritage but easy to suggest even bigger and bolder things are destined to come from the exciting band.

Death Kindly Waits For Me – Wire Iron Blood

Let us cut to the chase right away and suggest that Wire Iron Blood might just be the best and certainly one of the most exciting post hardcore debut in recent times. An introduction to UK quartet Death Kindly Waits For Me, the three track release is a striking and dramatically captivating protagonist for ears and imagination, and the fact that it suggests there is plenty more in the creative tank of the band yet to be explored and developed only increases its impact. Expressively provocative with a sound coming from the At The Drive In/Fall Of Troy end of an ever broadening genre, Death Kindly Waits For Me is a dramatic fresh breath in the British post hardcore scene.

Northamptonshire bred, Death Kindly Waits For Me began towards the beginning of 2014, taking inspirations from the likes of Thursday, Being As An Ocean, Finch, and Taking Back Sunday into their emerging invention. Their melody rich and aggressive sound was soon drawing potent attention locally and even further afield as their increasing live presence saw the foursome sharing stages with bands such as Decade, Light You Up, Devil Sold His Soul, Terraform, Emp!re, Our Hollow Our Home, Hey Vanity, Attention Thieves and Flood Of Red. Now a national attention is on the radar as Wire Iron Blood is uncaged, and it is fair to say that expectations are already confident in the band’s success in luring a wider spotlight.

The EP opens with the outstanding Cutting Room Floor, a sonic lure swiftly thrusting ears into the impassioned vocals of Adam Fitch, his clean and earnest tones instantly magnetic. Alongside him the guitar of Max Freeston slowly spreads a coarsely melodic lure whilst the heavy bass tones of Adam Cator, just as quickly adds dark haunting shadows. Pierced by the controlled and reserved but rapier like strikes of drummer Josh Miller, it is not a dramatic start yet thoroughly intriguing and awakening an appetite to hear more. Soon into a steady stride and still employing the creative weave which set things off, the song increasingly impresses as it expands its presence musically and vocally, Fitch superb with his distinctive angst fuelled tones whilst the DEath KIndly...more punkish offering of Freeston is a potent backing and the raw roars of Cator nicely caustic. An additional anthemic strength emerges in the song and though musically maybe it does not blaze with startling originality there is nothing but freshness and adventure to the opener.

The same strengths flows though the following Best Friends. It character is shadowed and emotionally dark yet it flames with a contagious energy and a rigorously exciting imagination. Vocally once more the track shines whilst riffs and melodies create an infectious proposal which, as the EP, becomes more addictively enjoyable over time. That Fall Of Troy feel is a bright whisper across the song, whilst other elements hint at the more experimental adventure of The Mai Shi at times, but as the song evolves from a raging stomp into a melancholic croon in its finale, the track is thrillingly individual to Death Kindly Waits For Me.

The closing Decade Of War continues the excellent temptation, its emotionally sober but energetically impassioned heart a canvas for great rhythmic enterprise and colourful guitar endeavour to wrap with craft and tenacity. Vocally of course the song continues a weighty persuasion amidst impressive sonic imagination and by its end it is hard not to sigh in disappointment that there is no more and to swiftly go back to the beginning again and ensure there is.

As mentioned at the beginning, Wire Iron Blood is a starting point for the band which shows that they have plenty to discover and push within themselves. There is little nothing to shade the potency of the release though, with no reflection on Cator, personal tastes would like to see a diminishing or loss of the aggressive vocal squalls as they often feel at odds with the rest of the vocal delivery and at times songs. It is a very minor thing of course in a potential drenched start by Death Kindly Waits For Me, a band hard not to get rather excited over.

I, The Lion – Run

With a creative roar to their music to match the suggestiveness of their name, UK rock band I, The Lion have earned the reputation for not only being one of the hardest working live bands around right now but for creating tracks which increasingly captivate attention. The Cheltenham trio are doing it again with the release of new EP Run, a four-track stomp which pleases on the first listen and continues to impress from thereon in. Tagged as post punk but with a sound more like a raw breed of alternative rock, with a healthy edge and whisper of Reuben to it, band and new release come flushed with potential and a fiery enterprise showing why the strong buzz around the band.

Formed in 2011, I, The Lion as mentioned have made a potent mark on the British rock live scene, undertaking numerous tours and sharing stages with the likes of Gallows, DZ Deathrays, Three Trapped Tigers, Talons, and Emp!re amongst many. Through releases too the band has made a steadily increasing mark, their first single released barely a month after the band emerged, stirring up over a thousand downloads whilst debut EP Tides and Tales emulated and surpassed its success soon after. Now the band is unleashing the Run EP, a proposition recorded with Jason Wilson (You Me At Six, Reuben, Fightstar) at Stakeout Studios in London. I, The Lion have already sparked up potent anticipation for its unveiling through lead single Hold Strong, a track debuted it at the 2000 Trees Festival where they it gave out for free, all of its copies going in under 30 seconds after their successful performance.

With song lyrics built around a central theme “of trying to get away and create something new and real”, as marked by the EP’s title, the encounter opens with that recent single. Hold Strong Run EP Cover - FINALswiftly lures in ears and focus through its laid back but jabbing rhythmic opening, increasing the bait as the almost dirty riffs of Elliot Withers add to the broadening shadowed scenery of the song. Vocalist Chris Evans brings his strong tones to the emerging narrative of the song next, as well as a great dark bassline which sparks another twinge of appetite for the already intriguing encounter. Harmonies across the band spread additional spice but cannot help the song find the spark it needs which leaves it a little flat initially. This is resolved once an unexpected lull triggers a new invention in the song though, vocals and melodies a melancholic yet vibrant lure leading to a raging enterprise of aggression and tenacity. From here on in the swinging rhythms of drummer Nathan Priday are virulently contagious as is the delicious hook which repeats with insatiable strength across the remainder of the EPs excellent start.

Not to be outdone, the following Icarus reveals its own addictive lure from its first breath, the hook inescapable bait setting up ears and imagination perfectly for the feisty endeavour of the song. That opening temptation expands its call with a more flouncy enterprise but without losing its potency as a grizzly bassline and expressive vocals joins its magnetic persuasion. Never really relaxing or exploding, though it too offers a tantalising respite mid-way, the song makes a good first impression but simply grows in weight and success with subsequent listens, that Reuben essence mentioned earlier a definite plus.

Man Made of Mice strolls along with a pop punk melodic colouring to its sturdy and imposing stride, bass and guitar aligning for a reserved but voracious proposal within the muscular frame of Priday’s rhythms and the straight talking vocals. Flushed with another infectious groove, the track again is one which maybe does not erupt as it hints at but leaves ears and appetite seriously contented before Bonny Island brings it all to a heftily satisfying close. As with all the songs, its first touch is a decisive and persuasive tempting, riffs and ragged hooks courting a dramatic rhythmic coaxing which immediately holds attention and intrigue. Arguably again the band let the potency of the start slip slightly but are soon building a commanding and fascinating web of sonic and rhythmic adventure with unpredictable and melodically soaked twists.

Bottom-line is, Run is a thoroughly enjoyable and persistently enticing encounter from a band with the potential to light up the British rock scene like a Reuben or Biffy Clyro.
