Model Depose – Damage Control

Bred from the seeds of eighties post punk and synth pop, the Model Depose sound has only nurtured and forged its own identity since the Netherland band’s first release back in 2013 and within new album, Damage Control, has cast its richest individuality and temptation yet.

The Groningen hailing outfit openly bear their inspirations on their creative sleeves with maybe a Depeche Mode influence the strongest yet they have increasingly been woven into the commanding imagination of the band. Damage Control though is most unique offering from the quartet yet. Certainly across its tapestry of flavours embracing dark and new wave, indie pop and post rock among many to that post punk/electro pop core certain shadow wrapped moments and electronic breaths sparked thoughts of the likes of Marc Almond, Editors, Modern English, Dead Register and the original Human League alongside Dave Gahan and co, yet every track rose to share its own rare presence of familiarity and uniqueness.

Damage Control opens up with Wights and quickly had attention secured as the rich vocals of Roeland van der Velde stepped forward within an electronic shimmering. An emotive lining to his tones are echoed in the synth shared melodies of Mariët Gast and the almost nagging jingle of Jobbe Holtes’ guitar, the song in no time an eager captivation. Their warm lures though are courted by dark shadows, bassist David Bos prowling their intimation as thicker and increasing drama marries every note and syllable. It is an enthralling almost haunting beginning to the album, its grip on the imagination already in place and only tightened thereon in.

Stranger follows and equally has melancholy for company as van der Velde again immediately impresses. There is a fire in the song’s dark belly though which without truly igniting gives it energy and intensity, the former ensnaring hips and the latter an emotive engagement. By its finale, its Depeche Mode-esque catchiness is in full swing yet without defusing its darkened breath.

The album’s title track follows and immediately had the body bouncing with its eager bold rhythms and the scything strikes of guitar behind again the rich invitation of vocals. The song is pure esurient contagion getting under the skin in no time and using body and spirit like a puppet as electronic and indie rock textures collude and roar in defiance. A definite favourite song contender it is quickly matched by the darkly lit virulence of Red Alert. There is a Muse like tint to the song, its evocative almost dissonant thoughts and breath united with instinctive rock ‘n’ roll catchiness which itself has something of She Wants Revenge to it.

Through the crepuscular but inflamed serenade of Blackstar and the light of magnetism that is Cold War, there was no loosening of the album’s hold on ear and pleasure. The second of the two features the guest vocals of Groningen-based singer/songwriter FENN and her duet with van der Velde is worth the admission fee alone while their successor, Drawing the Line, brings an electro rock incitement which again had body and imagination doing its contagious bidding. It is another which makes a firm claim for favourite album moment, the track sheer temptation from first to last second.

 #Dancelikenooneiswatching has an electro punk sneer to its synth pop calling, the track predominately a slice of rock dexterity smouldering with a host of other spices and quite addictive while the riveting Yesterday’s Gloom is a tenebrific croon with tempestuousness in its heart and intensity. Both tracks epitomise the diversity of sound within Damage Control but equally the unity of the Model Depose breath and craft to ear catching enterprise.

The album concludes with the pair of 03:00Am and bonus track Bombs Are Falling, the first an atmospherically evocative seduction within a sunless yet beguiling landscape and the second a gripping post-traumatic stress themed expression of power, intensity and magnetic craft.

Together they provide a potent end to a striking release, one which with its influences fits in with the eighties scene many of those inspirations come from but is firmly as fresh and adventurous as anything within the electronic /indie rock landscape Damage Control now lights up.

Black Orchid Empire – Yugen

With a critically acclaimed debut album already under their belt and a strong reputation earned for their energy surging live side, Black Orchid Empire look at even greater attention with new full-length Yugen. With eleven tracks of adventurous heavy weight alternative rock embracing the familiar and individual whilst unleashing hooks so easy to get snagged upon and lithe grooves to swing from, the UK outfit’s second album is a rather tasty proposition with regular moments of imposing captivation.

Since emerging in 2011, the London hailing trio has drawn increasing attention with their fiery yet resourcefully and carefully woven sound. That well-praised first album, Archetype, put them solidly on the radar of media and new fans alike, its release in 2016 the ignition to their continuing ascent within the British rock scene sure to be escalated by Yugen. Alongside the former’s success, Black Orchid Empire has been a potent live presence, making numerous much-lauded festival appearances at the likes of Standon Calling, Planet Rockstock, Camden Rocks, and Germany’s Taubertal Festival and sharing stages with artists such as Biffy Clyro, Editors, Skunk Anansie, and Hed P.E who the threesome supported on a UK tour.

Now the band is ready to stir up fresh fuss around themselves, success which even from the boisterous persuasion of opening track of Yugen you get the feeling is close to being a done deal. My Favourite Stranger is also the new single from Black Orchid Empire, a song stirring from a distant sonic squall with a great grumbling rusty bass lure quickly bound in the wiry tendrils of Paul Visser’s guitar. As the song settles without losing those tempting elements, his equally enticing vocals step forward backed by the just as melodically fine tones of bassist David Ferguson. The band has been regularly likened to Biffy Clyro and Muse but for us and certainly with this start, their sound sits somewhere between Reuben, Sick Puppies, and Foo Fighters in varying degrees across each song.

The equally magnetic Burn follows; bass and guitar again setting an enticing canvas for vocals to spring from and the firm manipulative beats of drummer Billy Freedom to shape. In that inviting and slightly imposing proposal, the track is an animated and unpredictable web of imagination and enterprise. Twists come and go; all delivering fresh adventure and bait while the song fluidly swings between teasing seduction and a full throated roar.

Previous single Celebrity Summer is next, the opening croon of Visser and his guitar a mischievous if emotive spark to the track’s ferocity and urgency as well as another trap of hooks and sonic dexterity. A tenacious slice of vociferous rock ‘n’ roll, the track also hit the spot dead centre before Wires entangled ears and appetite in its contagious aggression lined exploits. From vocals to rhythms, melody to sonic trespass, the song is a formidable and compelling incitement uniting a host of voracious flavours, all traits colouring Yugen from start to finish.

Blacklight Shadow makes its own mellow emotive entrance after the previous blaze, its elevated croon surrounded by sonic flames before settling down again to repeat the rich cycle. That earlier mentioned Australian band certainly comes to mind in the track but again the Black Orchid Empire sound soon establishes its own character with tempestuous power.

As the likes of the muscular and invasively magnetic Pray To The Creature with its weave of senses scorching tendrils and the heart spun atmospheric balladry of Vertigo rise, variety and pleasure go hand in hand. The second of the two wears an alluring country blues scent to its impassioned voice too, more of the broad flavours the album embraces while Mouth Of The Wolf takes essences of hard rock into its seriously catchy prowl.  Emerging as album favourite here, the song nags and jabs, teases and taunts with its controlled but hungry imagination and touch, pretty much living up to the snarling intimation of its title.

A more straightforward proposal comes with Pins And Needles, maybe the album’s least bold song but another which just grips attention and pleases as Toru’s Maze waits to uncage its infectious wares; that grizzled tone of Ferguson’s bass again licking at personal pleasure here though the whole of band and song manages to stoke things up.

Ending with the quite captivating roar of Years, a track erupting from a potently alluring ballad cry into a heart unleashing blaze, Yugen is one thoroughly enjoyable and so often striking release. is there any other reason to check it and Black Orchid Empire out?

Ghost Of Social Networks – If This Isn’t Love

Though being captivated by UK outfit Ghost Of Social Networks is becoming predictable there is nothing feeding expectations when it comes to the songs and invention crafting their appeal. It is a trait just as rampant in new single If This Isn’t Love; a song which holds no surprises in eagerly hungry ears but is a fresh escapade in the adventurous enterprise which has captured the imagination song after song so far.

Ghosts Of Social Networks is the one man project of Manchester based musician/songwriter Nathan Till, though a proposition which expands with the full-time assistance of drummer Ben Dargue and bassist Andrea Gobbi for shows. Early last year, Till released the debut GOSN single in the attention and acclaim grabbing shape of Love Potion/ Mockingbirds; a potent introduction only reinforced and built upon by subsequent singles Comeback Kid, No Going Back, and earlier this year the truly outstanding Outside The Wheel. The last of the releases laid down a new plateau for the sound and imagination of Till, one now magnetically courted by If This Isn’t Love.

Again seeing Till link up with producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Robert Plant, The Sherlocks), If This Isn’t Love instantly entices ears with a keen melodic jangle and swiftly entangles them in the following gnarly welcoming hook. As rich bait as they are though, they are the mere key to a surge of infectious temptation driven by boisterous rhythms and the ever alluring tones of Till. Quickly an eighties new wave scented hue emerges; a Paul Haig meets Lloyd Cole air adding extra spice to the track’s tenacious swing. Till is never one to keep things restricted to one line of persuasion though, adding imaginative twists and turns of energy which just add to the song’s boisterous appetite stoking adventure.

Whereas previous single Outside The Wheel slept with darker shadows, If This Isn’t Love sees Till play with openly warmer textures and a pop bred boldness which has hips and feet lustfully engaged even as a lyrical edge teases thoughts. It all makes for another outing with GOSN which leaves pleasure and a hunger for more, rampant…time for an album?

Ghosts of Social Networks – Outside The Wheel

From impressing with their debut AA-sided single Love Potion/ Mockingbirds last year, UK band Ghosts of Social Networks has gone from strength to strength in writing, sound, and attention. Earlier this year, No Going Back left its predecessor and the band’s second single Comeback Kid in the shade, a feat replicated now by Outside The Wheel, easily the outfit’s finest moment to date.

Created by and based around the craft and music of Manchester based Nathan Till, Ghosts of Social Networks create musical and emotional drama within their songs and no more striking than the suggestive theatre shaping Outside the Wheel. Again a song produced by Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Robert Plant, The Sherlocks), the new single winds a spicy groove around ears first, it’s tempting persona soon backed by tenaciously prowling rhythms the warm and expressive vocals of Till. At the same time, a haunting air rises and flows across the song, bringing a sense of The Mission to the brooding, politically charged encounter.

Building crescendos which erupt into a fiery chorus soaked in its own espionage of drama and creatively flirtatious escapades, moments with a touch of Bond to them; the song simply ignites ears and imagination not forgetting real pleasure.

There are some songs which leave a lingering mark on thoughts and emotions; Outside The Wheel one of them leaving Till and Ghosts of Social Networks a real task to match its majesty next time around.

Of Kings and Captains – Ain’t Got The Heart

Swiftly proving they are no one hit wonders, British pop rockers Of Kings and Captains follow up the rousing exploits and success of recent single Jack My Boy with another spirit stoking, body exciting exploit going by the name of Ain’t Got The Heart. As its predecessor, the new single is taken from the equally impressing Give ‘Em Hell Son EP, itself evidence that the Stourbridge outfit’s sound is loaded with infectious hooks and instinctive imagination.

Sprung and driven by the enterprise of lead vocalist/guitarist Luke Wassell, guitarist JD Lomas, and bassist Dean Greatbatch, Ain’t Got The Heart quickly entangles ears in its opening melody, it the seed to an energetic and accomplished stroll ripe with power pop energy and indie pop hookery. Recorded with producers Gavin Monaghan (The Twang, Editors, Nizlopi) and Joseph Murray, the song swiftly has feet shuffling, hips swinging, and ears hungry as its Fall Out Boy meets The Fratellis revelry consumes all before.

The song continues to infest and thrill body and spirit, cementing the promise and growing uniqueness of a sound which has quickly come over as a freshly discovered old friend with each and every song, especially in the two singles from Of Kings and Captains providing 2016 with two of its brightest moments.

With new sounds in the works and an appearance at Glastonbudget   2017 confirmed, it is easy to suggest that Of Kings and Captains are about to really explode upon the Uk rock scene.

Of Kings and Captains – Jack My Boy

Ahead of their new EP Give ’em Hell Son, British pop rockers Of Kings and Captains have released new single Jack My Boy, a mercilessly infectious slice of robust rock ‘n’ roll lying somewhere between The Pirates, Eddie and the Hot Rods, and The Wildhearts. It is hard to imagine that the Black Country hailing band could have found a more rousing teaser for their new EP, the new single taken from it one of those proposals which instinctively grips ears, voice, and bodies easily enlisting their eager involvement in short time.

Stourbridge bred, Of Kings and Captains released their debut album in 2015 to eager reactions; its success backed up by a potent live reputation which has seen the band share stages with the likes of McFly and Kids in Glass Houses among many and recently undertake a five date stadium tour with Bon Jovi. The foursome of vocalist/rhythm guitarist Luke Wassell, lead guitarist Joshua Lomas, bassist Dean Greatbatch, and drummer Kieran Lock linked up with producer Gavin Monaghan (The Twang, Editors, Niplozi) and Joseph Murray for Give ’em Hell Son and if Jack My Boy is anything to go by, with thrilling success.

A song according to Wassell which is “…about self-confidence and defying people who doubt you! it’s all about sticking to your guns and being yourself regardless of how people might put you down. It’s about being individual and kicking back against the norm“, Jack My Boy has all attention leaning its way from the initial lure of drum enticement. Lock’s magnetic rhythms are quickly joined by an anthemic bassline and eager twang loaded riffs, they in turn turning to an array of fifties seeded hooks as Wassell’s tones whips up even more infectious bait to the already catchy encounter. From there the track continues to lead the listener, drawing them towards seriously virulent choruses, they irresistible peaks in one, from start to finish, spirit arousing stomp.

It takes just one listen to be firmly involved in the song with every encounter after drawing keen and full participation. If Jack My Body is a sign of things to come with Give ’em Hell Son, the EP is a must.

The Sun Hotel – A Quest For Knowledge

With the recently released A Quest For Knowledge EP already luring stronger and keener attention the way of The Sun Hotel, the British alternative rock trio is poised to pile on the temptation with a new single July 1st. The song is the title track from their current EP, a song which bounces along with devilment in its adventure and pure magnetism in its boisterous attitude and character.

With members hailing from Shropshire and North Wales, The Sun Hotel began on 2014 as a folk duo of guitarist/vocalist Jon Hamer and drummer Ed Brown. As its line-up evolved with the addition of vocalist/bassist Joe Warham in the February of 2015, so the band’s sound grew into the striking and fiercely engaging proposal offered by the new single inspired by classic and modern rock influences. Last year also saw the release of a self-titled and self-produced EP in August, a collection of demos backing up an acclaim earning live presence. This past March, the threesome recorded their new EP with producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Sherlocks, Robert Plant) at Magic Garden Studios UK, an encounter which leaps at ears with creative relish, and in no more persuasive form than in forthcoming single, A Quest For Knowledge.

The track instantly engages ears with its guitar clang and rhythmic clash yet the hearty melodic warmth and endeavour which soon blossoms is already there laying its initial bait. Quite quickly the song has thoughts dipping into some nostalgic comparisons, the track carrying a scent of seventies/eighties power pop/new wave which simply sparks the imagination. In some ways there is an element of The Might Lemon Drops and Purple Hearts to the song but similarly, while creating its own individual character, current bands like The Jacques and The Sherlocks are hues in the mix.

There is also a great fiery edge to A Quest for Knowledge which simply adds to the enthralling theatre of the song and if new to The Sun Hotel, there is no better way to approach them than through this irresistible single.

A Quest for Knowledge, the single, is released July 1st.
