Gravves – Rattle

There is no foreplay involved with Rattle the debut EP of British noise inciters Gravves. It is a release which, certainly for us, careered straight to lustful instincts from its very first roar of breath and sound, thereon in proceeding to entwine us around its little creative finger. Having an already well-established love for The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, an open inspiration to the North West hailing trio, certainly helped its persuasion but the four tracks making up Rattle soon established the band and its sound as something individual, unique, and quite irresistible.

Since forming, the threesome of bassist/vocalist Adam Hughes, guitarist/vocalist Dave Thomas, and drummer Tom Williams have persistently lured attention and a fine reputation with a stage show seeing Gravves play with bands such as Slaves, Nothing But Thieves, DZ Deathrays, God Damn, Heck, and Misty Miller, as well as impress with festival appearances at the likes of Focus Wales, Tramlines, and Threshold Festival. Radio has also eagerly embraced the band and its striking sound, a success easy to see expanding as Rattle takes the band towards a new broad tide of ears and fans.

gravves-cover-artwork_RingMasterReviewRecorded with Michael Whalley (Mums, Kong, Bipolar Sunshine), Rattle simply explodes on the senses as opener My Pet Rihanna unleashes its sonic tirade. Within the clamour though, a virulent groove is forming, escaping and driving the song from thereon in as vocals clash and collude in noisy emotion while guitars and bass flare up and seductively groan respectively alongside each other. There is an inner calm in the turbulence too, a magnetic lure which breeds monotone vocals alongside the established outcry in a reflection of the dark touch of bass. There is no escaping the air of the previously mention Brighton band and at times there is a touch of fellow Brit up ‘n’ comers like The Droppers Neck and The St Pierre Snake Invasion too, but the track swiftly breeds its own identity.

Heartbeats is just as impressive as it reveals another aspect to the Gravves character. It has a controlled hand on its tempest of noise; still offering a fuzzy infestation of ears but with a dark composed gait echoed in the vocals and rhythms. Thomas’ guitar certainly sears air and flesh, its scorching touch infused with sharp hooks and abrasive grooves which trap the passions with their intrusive infection. There is a slight scent of The Birthday Party to the song and of Mclusky too in some ways while Future of the Left also comes to mind but again as its predecessor what emerges is all Gravves.

From its opening rhythmic enticement aligned to melodic acidity which has a bit of early U2 to it, Tribes storms the barricades next; subsequently sonically and vocally raging around that persistently infectious first hook and another great blend of vocal persuasion. It is a virulent blaze as catchy and imposing as anything around right now, manna for hungry senses and appetites as too the following Hollow Bones.

The closing track also has a more stable energy and storm to its heart, its body prowling almost stalking the listener as melodic vocals and keys entwine with harsher textures. Though it hints at fiercer eruptions, the song retains its control to fine effect, providing a thrilling end to a stunning release.

Rattle is an introduction to stir things up and Gravves one of those propositions which quite simply re-ignites a lust for music.

Forever Cult – Antonio Banderas

Aligning the snarl of their previous single with a more uplifting parade of inescapable hooks and spicy grooves, indie rockers Forever Cult unleash new single Antonio Banderas, a release more than confirming what its impressive predecessor suggested, that they are one of the UK’s exciting new treats.

Hailing from Leeds, the 2012 formed Forever Cult has emerged as one of the more talked about prospects with their fiery mix of alternative rock and indie pop with other rich textures. Their sound is a blend of transfixing flavours which easily sparked acclaim and appetite through previous single Winter’s Glow and a live presence which has seen the band play both Leeds and Reading Festival, Tramlines, Live at Leeds, Long Division as well as share stages with the likes of Demob Happy, JAWS, Allusondrugs, Eagulls, Brawlers, Spring King, and DZ Deathrays. With one UK tour under their belts, the trio of Kieran Clarke, Aaron Snowdon, and Alex Greaves are setting out on a second this July with Antonio Banderas the thoroughly captivating teaser.

Antonio Banderas Artwork_RingMaster Review   The song opens on a scrub of guitar and the grizzly tone of the vocals, both aspects inescapably lined with an Arctic Monkeys twang which only adds to their appeal and coaxing. Swiftly rhythms are adding their invitation too, darker shadows of bass wantonly flirting with those feisty beats with an energy and swagger which only sparks the same in the varied vocals and the web of hooks and sonic tempting cast from the guitars. It is an irresistible mix increasing in seduction as effects clad voices at times and a psych rock breath washes over song and senses. Fair to say the contagion at large is bewitching, enticing feet and emotions to dance with the imagination and virulent enterprise of the song.

Whereas Winter’s Glow was a darker, grouchier prowl of a proposal, Antonio Banderas is a tenaciously livelier escapade, though still carrying intriguing shadows woven into one feisty stomp of a persuasion. The only thing wrong with the single is its short length; just as you are getting up a head of steam to indulge in its majesty, the two and half minutes are over, leaving a hunger for more and impatient anticipation for something even more substantial, like an album. Thanks to Antonio Banderas though, the summer just got steamier.

Peur – Future Architects EP

Only days in and June 2015 is proving to be the source of some striking and seriously exciting encounters across a wealth of styles and genres. Another to add to that potent list is the Future Architects EP from UK trio Peur. Uniting their past two attention grabbing singles with new imagination loaded tracks, the Manchester band easily and forcibly confirm their growing stature as one of the more mouth-watering prospects on the British music scene.

Formed in 2013, the threesome of guitarist/vocalist Joe Lomax, bassist Ryan Greenhalgh, and drummer Sam Tempest quickly sparked support and attention with first single Anarchy and following debut EP We Can Build Astronauts in their band’s first few months. Live they did not take long in making a strong, acclaim earning impression either, 2014 seeing the band sharing stages with Empty Yard Experiment, DZ Deathrays, Allusondrugs, and Dearly Beloved. It was a busy and successful year which has continued into this with the release of a trio of singles, including This Will Destroy You, and now the Neil Treppas produced Future Architects.

The band’s inspirations includes artists ranging from Biffy Clyro to Nine Inch Nails, essences amongst many which make a swift spicing in the EP once the atmospheric Intro lays down the almost dystopian air of the release. The brief sonic narrative slips into the following They Have Destroyed Everything, and immediately the guitar of Lomax is casting melodic veins of acidic expression through the encroaching shadow thick landscape of the instrumental. That oppressive ambience is an imposing hue over pungent rhythms and a striking electronic colouring but suddenly lifts as the music in turn seamlessly flows into the gripping stroll of Explosions.

FA_Reputation Radio/RingMaster Review   An open and immediately magnetic Queens Of the Stone Age bred groove ignites ears first, its swinging persuasion matched by the rhythmic tenacity of Greenhalgh and Tempest. Contagion is a quick infestation of the song whilst drama and emotion is as rich through the enjoyable vocal tones and delivery of Lomax. That Josh Homme like spicing is an on-going tempting but as it expands and proceeds, the song explores a Muse like croon in chorus and voice where the early dramatic quality enriches every irresistible hooks and addictive groove within the encounter; familiarity and originality aligning for one voracious roar of a proposition.

     It Ends Before It Starts steps up next and it too is quickly enslaving ears and thoughts with healthy grooves, the thick lure of the one conjured by the bass especially captivating. Though it does not quite have the consistent swagger of its predecessor the track ebbs and flows with powerful energy and evocative invention. At times it offers a reflective, angst hued sigh and in others a bellowing expulsion of passion and intensity with both contrasts as potent and alluring as the other. Once more a Matt Bellamy and co breath coats the adventure but fair to say that again both songwriting and sound only use such influences as colour to their own designs.

The release ends with Hollow Skies, and if atmospheres and emotional intensity was thick before, they combine here for a smothering seduction fuelled further by the harmonic richness and craft of Lomax’s voice. Once more shadows line the noir lit theatre of the guitars and the emerging depths of the song, its body almost cavernous in feel with jabbing beats and darkly toned bass enterprise. Fair to say this time though it is the songwriting and the voice of Lomax which steals the show, even if unavoidably you have to also offer Muse as a close but certainly not quality defusing comparison to his presence.

The EP is as compelling as Peur is openly inventive, every track blossoming from the technical and inventive canvas the band members skilfully craft. They may still be looking for their truly distinct sound but more treats like Future Architects will see few complaining as Peur continues their impressive emergence and exploration.

I, The Lion – Run

With a creative roar to their music to match the suggestiveness of their name, UK rock band I, The Lion have earned the reputation for not only being one of the hardest working live bands around right now but for creating tracks which increasingly captivate attention. The Cheltenham trio are doing it again with the release of new EP Run, a four-track stomp which pleases on the first listen and continues to impress from thereon in. Tagged as post punk but with a sound more like a raw breed of alternative rock, with a healthy edge and whisper of Reuben to it, band and new release come flushed with potential and a fiery enterprise showing why the strong buzz around the band.

Formed in 2011, I, The Lion as mentioned have made a potent mark on the British rock live scene, undertaking numerous tours and sharing stages with the likes of Gallows, DZ Deathrays, Three Trapped Tigers, Talons, and Emp!re amongst many. Through releases too the band has made a steadily increasing mark, their first single released barely a month after the band emerged, stirring up over a thousand downloads whilst debut EP Tides and Tales emulated and surpassed its success soon after. Now the band is unleashing the Run EP, a proposition recorded with Jason Wilson (You Me At Six, Reuben, Fightstar) at Stakeout Studios in London. I, The Lion have already sparked up potent anticipation for its unveiling through lead single Hold Strong, a track debuted it at the 2000 Trees Festival where they it gave out for free, all of its copies going in under 30 seconds after their successful performance.

With song lyrics built around a central theme “of trying to get away and create something new and real”, as marked by the EP’s title, the encounter opens with that recent single. Hold Strong Run EP Cover - FINALswiftly lures in ears and focus through its laid back but jabbing rhythmic opening, increasing the bait as the almost dirty riffs of Elliot Withers add to the broadening shadowed scenery of the song. Vocalist Chris Evans brings his strong tones to the emerging narrative of the song next, as well as a great dark bassline which sparks another twinge of appetite for the already intriguing encounter. Harmonies across the band spread additional spice but cannot help the song find the spark it needs which leaves it a little flat initially. This is resolved once an unexpected lull triggers a new invention in the song though, vocals and melodies a melancholic yet vibrant lure leading to a raging enterprise of aggression and tenacity. From here on in the swinging rhythms of drummer Nathan Priday are virulently contagious as is the delicious hook which repeats with insatiable strength across the remainder of the EPs excellent start.

Not to be outdone, the following Icarus reveals its own addictive lure from its first breath, the hook inescapable bait setting up ears and imagination perfectly for the feisty endeavour of the song. That opening temptation expands its call with a more flouncy enterprise but without losing its potency as a grizzly bassline and expressive vocals joins its magnetic persuasion. Never really relaxing or exploding, though it too offers a tantalising respite mid-way, the song makes a good first impression but simply grows in weight and success with subsequent listens, that Reuben essence mentioned earlier a definite plus.

Man Made of Mice strolls along with a pop punk melodic colouring to its sturdy and imposing stride, bass and guitar aligning for a reserved but voracious proposal within the muscular frame of Priday’s rhythms and the straight talking vocals. Flushed with another infectious groove, the track again is one which maybe does not erupt as it hints at but leaves ears and appetite seriously contented before Bonny Island brings it all to a heftily satisfying close. As with all the songs, its first touch is a decisive and persuasive tempting, riffs and ragged hooks courting a dramatic rhythmic coaxing which immediately holds attention and intrigue. Arguably again the band let the potency of the start slip slightly but are soon building a commanding and fascinating web of sonic and rhythmic adventure with unpredictable and melodically soaked twists.

Bottom-line is, Run is a thoroughly enjoyable and persistently enticing encounter from a band with the potential to light up the British rock scene like a Reuben or Biffy Clyro.
