Echotape – This Could Be Anything

The successor to their well-received debut album, Wicked Way of 2016, UK quartet Echotape has just released the This Could Be Anything, an EP already sparking keen attention and success. It is a flavoursome dose of the band’s increasingly flourishing indie pop/alternative rock blended sound led by a single which in swift time was selected for Topman store UK coverage last month and featured by BBC Introducing.

Linking up with James Lewis (Clean Bandit/ Arctic Monkeys/ Rudimental) for the EP, Echotape have tapped into a fresh new breath in their music hand in hand with greater maturity in songwriting and sound. The EP has an air of confidence which in turn gives even greater energy and boldness to its body in relation to its impressing predecessor. It is an undisguised essence which fuels the striking presence and imagination of opener Forget It, that aforementioned lead single.

Straightaway jangling guitars and the rumbling tones of the bass coax attention; skittish beats dancing alongside as vocals provide their own potent lure within the track’s melodic breath. There is a touch of Skellums to the song as it continues to boldly stroll through ears with a creative swagger and vibrant air. The infectiousness which equally soaks the song seals what is pretty soon an already done deal, its instinctive catchiness gripping feet and spirit in no time for a party in the imagination.

The following Out Of Love similarly makes a fully enticing entrance, its harmonic start breeding another eagerly infectious canter with sultry sighs to its sonic winds and atmospheric suggestion to its melody rich and harmonically glowing skies. Keys and guitars again weave a captivating enticement exploited by the outstanding vocal unity within the band; it all kept relatively earthbound by the grounded but no less tenacious rhythms.

Don’t Want Anyone keeps up the anthemic might of the EP with its own rousing roar. It does not quite have the weight and virulence of the previous pair of songs but easily has feet shuffling and energies sparked with its animated craft and invention before leaving for 4AM to close up the release.

The final song is an emotively honed ballad accentuating the impressive vocal qualities and strengths within the band. It is another moment of captivation which only grows minute by minute into another highly enjoyable and memorable experience. Certainly, Forget It is the jewel in the EP’s crown but every song within its walls suggests that Echotape is ready to embrace far bigger attention.

Diamond Days – Love Struck Kids/I Rewind

UK alternative rockers Diamond Days released their new single a matter of days ago and already have its successor eagerly waiting for release in a few short weeks, so we thought we would look at both Love Struck Kids and I Rewind in one clean swoop.

Diamond Days hail from the Northwest of the UK and have already impressed and drawn good praise with their We’ve Come A Long Way EP which came out last November. Even before then debut single, Start It From The End had given a potent introduction to the Liverpool quartet, receiving over 60,000 views on YouTube and sparking over 20,000 followers for Diamond Days across the social media. As mentioned We’ve Come A Long Way ignited even stronger and eager attention from fans and indeed media, as well as a live presence which has seen the band supporting the likes of The Blackout, William Control, and Verses, and now it is the turn of their two new singles to stir up more welcome fuss.

cover_RingMaster Review   First, and released a number of days back, is the Seb Berrios and Arthur Indrikovs (Florence & the Machine, Foxes, Jon Newman, Clean Bandit) produced Love Struck Kids. Immediately hefty rhythms and keenly eager riffs are rapping ears but equally a melody built sonic persuasion is there coaxing ears too before the strong voice of Alex Fearn erupts with equal colour. It is a powerful and thickly enticing start which only grips a little tighter as the guitars of Tom Shepherd and Fearn flirt with open enterprise and the commanding rhythmic bait of bassist Tom Jack Jackson and drummer Mark Highdale sets to work.

The song soon shows a familiarity in its surging stride of sound and energy yet has a freshness and invention which turns that to merely another spice in its resourceful adventure, which subsequently brings in mellow keys around an additional reflective vocal piece portraying a deeper emotion fuelled drama. The track is soon roaring as before though to leave ears and appetite just that little greedier and without doubt more energetically pleasured.

It is an invigorating proposition understandably already getting rave responses; a result forthcoming single I Rewind will surely match. In fact it has already drawn great praise as part of the We’ve Come A Long Way EP from where it comes. Featuring Yashin vocalist Harry Radford, the song ‘tickles’ ears and expectations with an initial lure of smiling guitar, this in turn sparking healthy beats and a throaty bassline as the guitars broaden their tapestry and the vocals of Fearn, backed again impressively across band and guest, unfurl the narrative and its emotion.

With a great vocal ‘spitting’ midway and a greater snarl to its heart and nature compared to the first single, I Rewind is a formidable and anthemic incitement and remains, if not arguably the best Diamond Days song to date, certainly the biggest favourite.

Both singles only reinforce and push the reputation and growing stature of Diamond Days, a band it is easy to suspect as it evolves a richer distinct identity to its right now You Me At Six meets Lower Than Atlantis meets Fall Out Boy sound, will only get bigger and better.

Villiers – The Dancer

    The Dancer is the new single from UK rock band Villiers, a song which embraces sounds of the eighties in modern evocative textures. It is a striking if not startling introduction to the Lancashire trio, one which strengthens its magnetism and fascination over each play whilst parading a rich potential and potent craft which only engages thoughts and an early appetite for the band’s horizons.

Villiers came to be in 2011, taking influences from the likes of New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen into their ideation with lyrical inspirations come from dystopian writers such as J.G Ballard and George Orwell. A trio of EPs, Light the Fuse, Into the Haze, and VLRS have drawn acclaim and attention the way of the band whilst live Villiers has equally enhanced their statue and reputation in support and headlining shows as well as a successful appearance at BeatHerder alongside Clean Bandit, TOY, Temples, Chic ft Nile Rodgers and Groove Armada last year. The Dancer makes the next intriguing step in the ascent of Dan Earnshaw (vocals/bass/synths), Ben Earnshaw (vocals/guitar/synths), and Daniel Buckle (drums/percussion), one sure to draw new fans and voices their way.

Shadows and moody textures wrap around ears from the first breath of the song, their dark caress instantly reminding of John Foxx and in villiers covermany ways OMD. It is a strongly emotive electronic mist which envelops the imagination, sparking emotions as it persists in charming and provoking the senses through the heart of the song. Vocally the band is expressive singularly and with choice harmonies but it is the slowly swirling electronic wash and tender guitar temptation which steals the passions most potently.

The track does not ignite at times as you expect or delve into the darkest melancholic depths as also assumed occasionally, but glides gracefully on an even keel across its poetic landscape. To be honest a twist into one of the more extreme premises would have stirred up a welcome fire but with a wonderful resonance to the rhythms and drama to the track as a whole it is hard to be critical or any more demanding

Also holding essences of Editors and The Cure in its provocative body, The Dancer is another promising and appealing step in the emergence of Villiers, one of many more to come we are sure.
