InAir – Dreamful

There are many aspects to the sound and songs of British trio InAir but the ones which impress most is the almost nagging quality which effortlessly entices swift returns and then the increasing temptation which rewards every listen. The evidence is most ripe within new EP Dreamful, a handful of tracks which immediately made a strong case for continued attention but truly blossomed in ears and appetite with that incessant curiosity.

Hailing from Reading, InAir introduced themselves with a praise gathering debut EP in 2017, A Different Light revealing the rich flavouring to their alternative/electro rock nurtured sound. Equally live the threesome of lead vocalist/bassist Joe Conneely, guitarist/vocalist Aaron Iley, and drummer/vocalist Connor Shortt has drawn potent acclaim, sharing stages with the likes of Arcane Roots, Defences, Chasing Cadence, Junior, Veridian, From Inside and Death Remains. It is easy to expect the band to again entice eager support for Dreamful such its contagious enterprise. Whether it is their breakthrough moment time will tell but it is hard to deny that point is on the cards at some moment in time.

Control kicks things off, its calm melodic invitation soon engulfed in a fiery eruption. As swiftly though it relaxes into a reserved but catchy stroll as Conneely’s tones proceed to share the song’s heart. All the while that volatile edge still simmers, boiling up with rhythms a tenacious enticement throughout as guitar sparked flames ignite the drama of the encounter. It is an absorbing mix of sound and imagination, fresh and familiar flavours woven into one powerful body.

The following Chemicals is similarly bred, electronic enterprise colluding with rock and metal inspired hues to create a dramatic proposition further enhanced by the emotive strength of vocals. Each though carries an infectious lining which increasingly got under the skin, the dynamics of rhythms adding to this tempting as intimacy fuels the narrative and melodic breath of the song. Eclipsing the opener, it too is maybe just a tad outshone by its successor, Talk To You. It is only slight if it is as together the outstanding pair provides the pinnacle of the EP, the latter an impassioned and lively slice of melancholy draped contagion with potent crescendos and searing eruptions.

The release is completed by firstly Regress, an equally combustible slab of electronic and melodic intensity as anthemic as it is thickly emotive, and finally Life Finds A Way. The closer like those before it simply grew in persuasion and stature by the listen, its unassuming yet enticing beginning breeding some of the EP’s most riveting and rousing flumes of sound and contagion to erupt.

Dreamful is a release which commands attention once given the opportunity, whether it demands it enough will determine if now or in the future InAir really make their mark on the UK rock scene but it is easy to feel they will.

Pretty Little Enemy – Bitch PLEase!

2012 and ’13 saw the release of The Treatment EP and the album Save As I Save respectively from UK melodic metallers Zoltar Speaks. Both encounters seriously impressed so it was with disappointment that the band subsequently folded. Out of its ashes in 2015 though, came Pretty Little Enemy, a quartet formed by vocalist Louise Body, bassist Jason Coles, and drummer Ben Dean.  Completing their line-up with guitarist Georgia Bell, Pretty Little Enemy quickly stirred up attention on the live scene, taking in shows supporting the likes of Syren City, Embers of Eden, and Chasing Cadence amongst their own stage firing shows. Now they are grabbing attention with the Bitch PLEase! EP, three tracks of muscular yet siren-esque alternative rock leading ears into a mix of contagion and danger.

As opener Myles grumbles on the senses with its metal scented invitation, a swift appetite is bred but soon taken aback by the sudden slip into an almost pop rock moment with the appearance of Body’s distinctive  voice. Reminding a touch of eighties band The Photos, the band soon re-establishes its hold especially as the song blossoms into a more Skunk Anansie inspired snarl. Bell’s grooves dances on the ear in no time, her sonic enterprise skirted by the grouchier lure of Cole’s bass and the firmly landing beats of Dean. Continuing to blend aggression and melodic endeavour, the song makes for a potent start to the release though it is soon eclipsed by successor Vertebreak.

The second song is a roar which instantly grips ears and attention, Body sharing her powerful and skilful vocal range to bring back memories of her previous band, a spicing backed up by the track’s irritable yet beguiling character in sound and imagination. Their new single, it is a striking and forcibly magnetic proposal stealing best song honours while confirming an already brewing appetite for the Pretty Little Enemy invention.

What Makes You completes the trio of tracks; it also quickly enticing rich focus with a spidery web of grooves around the ever impressing drama of Body’s vocals. Rhythmically it is the least dramatic but both Coles and Dean perfectly back up the leading elements of the song without ever feeling like they are just supporting textures.

With Bitch PLEase!, Pretty Little Enemy are not yet at a place to rival Zoltar Speaks but already the hints are there that it is a potential in the making and something to eagerly await while thoroughly enjoying the band’s debut proposition.

Cardinal Bay – Answers EP

Making a potent introduction with their debut EP last year, UK post hardcore band Cardinal Bay have upped their game with its successor Answers. It is a five track proposal which growls as it dances on the ear, all of its tracks being as seriously catchy as they are emotively and aggressively forceful.

The strength of the band’s 2015 debut EP Way Back Home, released in their second year together, suggested that the Bridgwater quintet had the potential to make some big musical statements ahead and Answers certainly lives up to that promise in many ways. It comes after a year, since that first release, where the band undertook many UK tours, playing around the country alongside Amaryllis, Lost Atlanta, Chasing Cadence, and Breathe in the Silence and supported Funeral for a Friend before playing main stage at the UK’s biggest youth music festival, Butserfest. The early months of 2016 have been no different in business and success, the five-piece having made a recently acclaimed appearance on the main stage at Teddy Rocks. Now it is time for the Jonny Renshaw (Devil Sold His Soul) recorded Answers to lay down a marker for what many are calling the most exciting band to recently emerge in the post hardcore scene.

art_RingMasterReviewFrom its first moments, the Answers EP certainly does little to dismiss that type of claim, its title track slipping into ears with a melodic jangle as feisty sounds flirt with its background. Pretty soon rhythms and riffs are jostling for attention too as the strong harmonic cries of Josh Rogers colour the song’s air. It is not an over striking start but the song easily has attention held, especially once Roger’s strong vocals stroll with a throaty bassline from Jonny Dibble for company as beats jab and skirt their tempting. As the guitars of George Hill and Dave Small cast a web of melodic suggestiveness, the song simmers nicely with the occasion eruption of raw vocal growls matched by an increase in energy led by the lively beats of Matt Ward.

A strong start to the EP, the song is a sign of things to come with bigger and bolder things waiting to really spark the imagination starting with Out Of Sight. The second track has a far more imposing air to it straight away, swinging beats hitting with a heavier hand as again raw vocal squalls court the impressing melodic tones of Rogers. The band does have a flare with creating infectious pop seeded enterprise too and that also blossoms within the tenacious encounter, almost so well that its make the rawest hues of the track seem unnecessary.

Its feisty presence is matched and eclipsed by the outstanding roar of the following #Shotgun. Instantly it has a virulence and fiery edge which seduces and ignites the imagination and appetite to their strongest reactions yet. There is something familiar to the song, an indefinable essence which only adds to its drama and magnetism built on shadowy rhythms, melodic adventure, and a rampant catchiness more than conducted by Roger’s powerful delivery.

Masquerade makes a more tempered impact next though from its initial grouchy attack amidst a spiral of sonic enterprise, the track easily engages and increasingly pleases ears. It lacks the spark of its predecessors musically, the ear grabbing bite which chains attention but certainly makes up for it with the now expected great vocal quality of the band.

The EP comes to a close with There Are No Flames In Hell, a track which slowly burned itself into the passions. By its end though, and helped by round after round of its infection loaded chorus, it emerged as another strong and lingering favourite. The track contains every impressive element of the band and its sound, giving plenty more reasons why so many are waxing lyrical about Cardinal Bay. With the Answers EP to the fore, 2016 is looking like being a big year for the Somerset band.

The Rooz – Fairweather EP

Whilst we might not be too taken with the name, their music is something to eagerly welcome as proven by Fairweather, the new EP from UK rock band The Rooz. The release is a slice of mature and rousing alternative rock which gives little hint of the band’s tender years, all aged between 16 and 19, but loudly declares the reasons why they are making a bit of a stir right now.

Hailing from Telford in Shropshire, The Rooz since forming has been crowned in their first year, Live Band Of The Year 2013, though no idea who by, been awarded the special Award For Innovation from Music For Youth in 2014, and found themselves invited to perform at the Brit Awards Big Music Project Final at London’s Indigo2 at O2 Arena. Alongside that and an increasing reputation for their highly energetic live shows, the band has supported the likes of Lawson, Union J, Boyzone, Alesha Dixon, and Fyfe Dangerfield as well as played the Royal Albert Hall. Fair to say it has been a lively emergence for the band supported by a trio of well-received singles and the Caught In The Sun EP. Now we have Fairweather to cement their place as one exciting prospect in British rock whilst enticing more new and eager appetites the way of The Rooz.

cover170x170_RingMaster Review     It opens with the mighty Sixpence and a brewing sonic tempting as shadowy as it is intriguing. Quickly it arrives in a burst of stirring brass and rampant rhythms before just as swiftly settling into a gentle but lively stroll with melodies from the guitar of Ralph Porrett and the piano of Louis Coupe aligning around the quickly impressing vocals of the latter. The bass of Peter Davis keeps darker hues around with its grizzly growl whilst the beats of Tom Russell are unobtrusive but firm to frame the freely flowing magnetic melodies. It is a powerful start to the EP which only increases weight and persuasion as crescendos erupt, invention flows, and the songwriting of Coupe, as his voice, enthrals.

Theatre in the speakers, the outstanding song finally takes its leave for the arrival of Sirens and its blues rock ‘n’ roll. Again there is an entrance to light ears and appetite, followed by a just as flavoursome canter of riffs and grooves entangled in anthemic rhythms. Across its infectious body, a harmonica sizzles and sonic enterprise blazes and though it does not have the level of invention as its predecessor, the track is pure rock ‘n’ roll to get very greedy and possessive over, as too its successor, the excellent Out On A Limb. More controlled but no less impassioned and fiery than the previous stomp, the song roars and charms with equal captivation whilst taking the listener on a heady ride which just gets more tenacious and boisterous with each passing rally of rhythms and flame of melodic adventure from Porrett within the inescapable vocal rebel rousing of Coupe.

The band’s recent single is next and if you want a teaser before diving headlong into The Rooz, Violins + Animals is the perfect tempting. Its first steps are less than spectacular compared to the songs before it, but soon its radiant lures in sound and voice are coaxing full attention as they lead ears into the brewing and ultimately dynamic catchiness of the chorus. Everything about the track is infection; the guitars a smiling incitement as the rhythms provide their beckoning shuffle, whilst vocally, Coupe is a blaze of expression and passion; it all rich bait for the fire of that incendiary chorus.

The release closes with Cold, though the CD version of Fairweather does also include the two tracks making up last single Lowlife. Coupe’s piano and voice open up the song, his inviting balladry the appetiser to an eventually arising swing of sound. After the first listen or two we would have said the track was a bit too show tune for personal tastes but over time there is no escaping the call of the orchestral roars, soulful rise and falls of melodies, and indeed the drama in the vocal delivery of Coupe as it ends the release in highly enjoyable style.

Fairweather is a big treat of a proposition, and an invigorating declaration of something rather special growing in the shape of The Rooz and easy to recommend.
