Mosley Bar – Royalties

Following up their well-received debut EP, Another Record Sleeve, which sparked strong attention the way of the band and airplay from the likes of BBC 6 Music BBC Introducing, Mosley Bar uncage successor Royalities this month to show that the potency of the first was no flash in the pan. Offering four tracks with a fine line in instinctive catchiness and enterprise, the EP reinforces the British North West hailing quartet’s potential of making a real impression on the UK rock scene.

Formed in 2015, Mosley Bar draw on the inspiration of bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Two Door Cinema Club, and Circa Waves in a sound which has a certain familiarity to it but equally a freshness of youth and imagination. Certainly the first pair of artists in that selection of influences comes to mind easily with the band’s sound but infests without disguising the potential of bolder adventures ahead; a promise which is richer and already more imaginative in their new offering against the strong showing within Another Record Sleeve.

Royalties opens up with a song which has already lured praise carrying attention, Two Apart quickly enticing ears with its initial guitar jangle around the distinctive tones of vocalist/guitarist Ryan Ward. In no time, the swinging lure of Tim Williams’s bass and the melodic enticement of guitarist Adam Eccleston add to the song’s blossoming, the lively beats of Matthew Wright driving things with spirit. It is easy to see why the infectious exploits and dynamic prowess of the track has drawn keen plaudits, its boisterous exploits and web of melodic and sonic enterprise an accomplished and riveting proposal lined by that enjoyable Arctic Monkeys spicing.

With increasing drama and emotive intensity roaring through ears, the excellent opener makes way for the similarly instinctively catchy Wide Awake. Its own line in hooks and flirtatious industry is even swifter in persuasion than that of its virulent predecessor, Eccleston and Wards’ guitars infesting feet and hips as the latter continues to bring his magnetic voice to the rousing mix. For us, the track simply outshines the first and pretty much anything from the band to date; its body boisterous and character a fine blend of recognisable and new essences colluding in one irresistible incitement.

The punchy stroll of next up Philip is aligned to a melodic shimmer and psych pop flavouring, contrasting textures which unite with evocative imagination around the hearty stomp of a song erupting with persuasive zeal. It is another frisky and buoyant landscape of sound which grows listen by listen into a rousing temptation; a growing temptation also emulated in Chasing which brings things to a fine close. The slow burner of the bunch, though its breezy energy and playful nature is a quick success on ears and appetite, the song simmers and shines with increasing potency to provide another highly enjoyable outing with Mosley Bar.

Listening to Royalities, it feels like now is the time for Mosley Bar to add bolder, more unpredictable elements to their music. Their new release does have a whiff of that evolution to be fair and added to the band’s natural weaving of infectious music around insightful words, there is no reason that the journey ahead for band and fan will not be eventful and thoroughly enjoyable.

Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles – Always Something

A year after the release of their acclaimed debut EP, Bide Your Time, UK quartet Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles have a new single to tempt similar reactions. Always Something is a peach of a song, melodic rock swiftly engaging ears and inciting the body while revealing a fresh step of invention and adventure in writing and sound.

The band is the project of singer/songwriter Billy Bibby, founding and former member of Catfish and the Bottlemen whose debut album, The Balcony, achieved Platinum status last year. Leaving the band after seven years in 2014, he spent the following year writing and undertaking a solo acoustic tour before recruiting a full band with the help of Simon Jones, bassist for The Verve. Their first single, Waitin’ for You, grabbed potent attention before Bide Your Time made a striking impression at the beginning of last year. 2016 saw the outfit busy with their live endeavours taking in over 70 shows and festival appearances around the UK. This year looks like following suit, getting off to a potent start with the release of Always Something.

 The single immediately consumes ears with its tide of rousing rhythms and riffs entangled in melodic flames. It soon settles into a more controlled but still eager stroll as the guitars of Rob Jones and Bibby dance around the latter’s warm and inviting vocals. With the infectious beats of Mike Pearce colluding with the pulsing throb of Matt Bassy’s bass, the song easily has hips and appetite enticed by its infectious rock ‘n’ roll.

A smart and fluid variety in energy and imagination only adds to the persuasive prowess of the song, as too sultry keys flirting from the background as Bibby’s voice draws it all into making one captivating proposal through the guidance of his songwriting and inviting voice.

Always Something maybe not be breaking new ground but it is a new striking step in the Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles sound and a thoroughly enjoyable four minutes; a winner in our book.

Billy Bibby and The Wry Smiles – Are You Ready?

Reinforcing the attraction and quality found in the band’s recently released debut EP, Bide Your Time, British quartet Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles unveil new single Are You Ready?, a song which infests ears and imagination with its earthily melodic rock ‘n’ roll laced with an inviting tinge of Americana.

The band is the new venture of former and founding lead guitarist of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Billy Bibby. Uniting his string and lead vocal prowess with that of lead guitarist Rob Jones, bassist Matt Thomas, and drummer Mike Pearce, Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles came together in the Autumn of 2015. Within their first six months, the band went on a 26-date UK tour and recorded the well-received Bide Your Time EP. Its tracks and especially its singles, Waitin’ for You and Don’t Fall, found potent radio play across the likes of BBC Wales, BBC Jersey, Radio X, and Virgin Radio UK alongside numerous national and global indie stations.

It is a success sure to be matched and potentially surpassed by Are You Ready? , a track which Bibby recently talked of, saying “This song was the last one to be practiced and finished as a band before our first UK tour together,” continuing to add “but as soon as we’d finished it with our own input into our own individual parts it seemed to stand out as a major contender for the next single.

The song opens with the ear luring tones of Biddy being cradled in gentle strokes of guitar, a union quickly joined by crisp rhythms and the magnetic jangle of Jones’ melodic enterprise. As the vibrant passage of the verse leads to a boisterous chorus, there is an undefined familiarity to the proposition, but an essence which simply adds to the infectious character and imaginative nature of the encounter.

As swift as it is an ear pleaser, the sense that the song will be a live crowd pleaser emerges and in many ways it has that live air to its rousing presence.

The Bide Your Time EP was an impressive introduction to Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles which Are You Ready? takes to an even more potent level while providing the summer of 2016 with an instinctive anthem to embrace.

Mosley Bar – Another Record Sleeve EP

Having given a potent introduction to themselves with debut single Record Sleeve, British indie rock quartet Mosley Bar provide an even bigger and bolder statement in their emergence with the Another Record Sleeve EP. Four tracks which jangle and seduce with lively energy and imagination, the band’s first EP is a striking and increasingly magnetic encounter suggesting Mosley Bar as another to add to the new breed of exciting indie bands lighting ears.

Formed in 2015 with the ripe old ages of 17 and 20 across its line-up, Mosley Bar draws on inspirations from the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Two Door Cinema Club, and The Libertines as additional flavouring to their distinctively toned sound. Hailing from the North West of England, the four-piece released Record Sleeve last October, its ear enticing outing quickly drawing national and local radio play with BBC 6 music and BBC Introducing. Recorded with a second track in the August of 2015, its success saw the band return to The Motor Museum Recording Studio in Liverpool to lay down another pair of songs, the four now making up Another Record Sleeve.

art_RingMasterReviewStraight away it is easy to expect the EP to make a bigger stir as its best track leaps into ears with a dynamic contagion. Risk opens on the swinging beats of Matthew Wright, his arms no doubt a blur as his tenacious and attention stoking bait hits ears. Imagination and appetite is as swiftly grabbed by the dark meaty bassline of Tim Williams and the melodic jangle cast by the guitars of Adam Eccleston and Ryan Ward. The initial boisterous energy of the song relaxes a little as Ward’s alluring vocals join the revelry; alongside him William’s bass with brooding enterprise almost flirting with the song’s increasingly catchy tones. Fair to say, even before realisation of the virulence at work, hips and voice are firmly involved with a track leaving a lingering imprint in its wake.

Record Sleeve steps up next, its low key coaxing also becoming a bolder proposition as guitars and voice entice with spicy and melodic prowess. There remains a warm mellowness to the song, even when its sonic flames and eager energy really catches light with infectiousness pouring from every note and syllable whilst rhythms create their own captivating shuffle. Quickly it is easy to see why the song made a strong impact last year, the track feeding hungry ears with its flavoursome persuasion before parting for the similarly engaging Rendezvous. It too has a swiftly infectious adventure to its presence with some of those earlier mentioned influences open hues to the band’s own resourceful enterprise and imagination. It makes for a song, and indeed EP, which quickly feels familiar but with a vibrant and highly refreshing character, each only push Mosley Bar apart from any others carrying the same kind of inspirations.

The World And I brings the EP to a fine close, it too vibrantly swinging along with flirtatious textures and smiling melodic endeavour within its sultry sonic tapestry. Rhythms as now expected add their own addictive qualities whilst the vocals only continue to impress as they drive the song’s catchy tempting and the listener’s easily volunteered involvement.

The Mosley Bar sound has yet to find its unique feet but big hints and potential ripple through Another Record Sleeve as it has ears and bodies bouncing around in pleasure. Potentially big things ahead for the band we suspect.

FlashFires – Play EP

It would not be surprising if the name FlashFires rang a bell even if their sounds were a mystery because of the potent buzz that has been brewing up around them, certainly over the past six months or so. A couple of recent singles gave a good hint as to why the enthused reaction to their emergence and now the UK band’s debut EP brings the strongest evidence yet. A thoroughly engaging proposition with a sound lying somewhere between indie pop and rock, the Play EP makes a refreshing and fascinating full introduction to the young band.

Hailing from Basingstoke, FlashFires was formed by a quintet of school friends who aged nineteen to twenty, brought their skills and imagination together for a band swiftly inviting local attention and appetites. They were soon playing venues along the South Coast as an eager fan base grew around them, increasing their reputation all the time as they proceeded to gain slots at the Alresford Festival, Blissfields, and a headline slot at the B’Stoke Live show this last year. A song called ManShark in 2012 brought the band to the notice of Angry Badger Records, the independent label signing them up the following year as plans to record an album were put in place. Linking up with Tesla bassist Brian Wheat at J Street Recording Studios in California that September, the band set about recording a collection of songs produced by Wheat who was so impressed he expressed an interest in co-managing the band with Jules of Angry Badger Records. It was a union concluded by early 2014 as the band continued to lure focus and praise through a live presence seeing them playing with the likes of Catfish And The Bottlemen, The Telescreen, The Birthday Suit (Idlewild), and The Rifles to date. Last November FlashFires released acclaimed debut single Circus Boy, a potent lure followed recently by its successor Shy. Now Play is set to make its mark on a national awareness and reinforce the claim of vocalist Alex Gonzato that “We have been moving to bigger and better things recently, the hunger and drive in the band keeps us moving forward all the time”.

The Play EP     The release opens with 31, a song quickly luring ears with thumping beats within a melodic coaxing of guitar. It is not a dramatic start but a potent one, continuing as the expressive tones of Gonzato step into the weave of restrained yet firmly inviting enterprise cast by the guitars of Fraser Roskilly and Jon Cullis. The song continues to engage and embrace ears with its colourful melodies and more shadowed hues brought by the bass of Liam Kinslow and speared by the crisp beats of drummer Toby Bartlett. It is a warm and welcoming start to the EP, one bringing a slight whiff of Americana to its air, but in hindsight not carrying enough of the creative drama which inflames the following songs starting with Shy.

The band’s current single almost flirts with ears through its opening strokes of guitar, turning that suggestiveness into a stronger captivating texture as sharp hooks start to line the track’s creativity. There is snappiness to the encounter which was not exactly lacking its predecessor but certainly defused, whilst harmonies and melodies seem to have an even spicier colouring to their inventive embrace of punchy rhythms. Hints of Muse equally add intrigue and adventure to the infectious proposition before it makes away for the sultry presence of Lingo. With a great grizzled bass tone aligning to another impressive dance of jabbing beats from Bartlett, the track makes an imagination sparking start which only erupts in greater temptation through a contagiously imaginative chorus. It is fair to say that none of the songs on the EP explode into out and out raucousness and adrenaline driven revelry yet the song certainly leaves you breathless by the end of its wonderfully unpredictable adventure.

It is the pinnacle of the release though shares that plateau with the following You Say Nothing. Its opening hook has ears and appetite seduced whilst the quickly joining melodic wine dripping from guitar strings brings a scent of Dire Straits to the proposal. It is an alluring entrance which continues to expand as band and song entangle bluesy rock ‘n’ roll with a strain of more classically cultured rock as well as a power pop/punk essence. The outstanding song is simply catchy and enthralling, especially when the bass steps out with a delicious and throaty bassline which in turn inspires a new twist in the creative dance of rhythms and guitar.

Play is brought to a close by Circus Boy, a feisty and energetic flame of inventive craft and passion cast in another forcibly infectious slice of pop rock, and the most raw and explosive song on the release if not one to challenge the previous pair for top honours.

FlashFires easily show why the keen interest and praise being laid at their creative feet with Play whilst revealing a potential and strong hint that we have seen and heard nothing yet. With a very enjoyable and strong first seed in the EP, we for one cannot wait to see their talent blossom.

The Phantoms – Wasting Time

Enveloped in an eager buzz of attention in their Scottish homeland, West Lothian quartet The Phantoms make a potent play for ears and imaginations further afield with new single Wasting Time. It is a song which does not make a startling impression or impact initially but sneaks into the psyche whilst pleasing ears, finding a potent nestling place to nudge thoughts and imagination time and time again.

Formed in May 2012, The Phantoms were soon stirring up a local following with a sound bred on the inspirations of bands such as Kasabian, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Arctic Monkeys and their energetic live presence. Their debut EP This Is How It Should Be worked away on the Scottish media and fans whilst the following single Revolution took the band to a broader British spotlight, in no small ways helped by successful tour and support slot with Catfish and the Bottlemen and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Now the Broxburn band is aiming for greater success with Wasting Time, and it is hard to expect anything less than continued success upon its anticipated release.Picture 108

The guitars of Colin Simpson and Colin McKillop bring the song into view, their melodic enticing an instant magnet which increases its pull once the dark sultry tones cast Peter Stewart’s bass emerge in hand with the firmly delivered beats of drummer Blair Cullen. It is not an explosive entrance but a seriously compelling one which only intensifies once bass and drums spin their dark web around the strong vocals of Simpson. Electronic flirtation also sizzles and teases within the song, at times a corrosive whisper and in other moments a vivacious breath from them attaching to the melodic tenacity of McKillop. The track continues to hint that it might erupt into a massive anthem or contagion but never goes that extra step, retaining an infectious yet reserved energy which leaves ears and thoughts satisfied if hopeful for that extra missing spark.

Nevertheless the track is a captivating proposition alerting the country and beyond to another emerging and potentially mighty Scottish proposal. There is certainly no element of wasting time with The Phantoms new single.

Glass Caves – Alive

There is a healthy buzz around UK alternative rockers Glass Caves, and the release of their debut album Alive provides plenty of reasons why. It holds a collection of catchy and vibrant songs which live up to the album’s title with ease. There is an energy and hunger to songwriting and tracks which provides the release and sound with a tenacious and invigorating presence. It makes for a potently captivating encounter though what there is not within Alive is unique character or presence to set the band truly out from the Arctic Monkeys inspired crowd. Taking songs individually it does not impact so openly but across what is a nevertheless fascinating and highly satisfying proposition, that essence prevents a great album being a classic striking debut.

Since forming the band has incessantly hit streets and venues with their presence and vivacious sounds. This has led to a constantly increasing and eager fan base as well as praising attention from the underground media and beyond. Successful slots at numerous festivals such as Leeds/Reading, Ynot Festival, and Shrewsbury Fields Forever has done them no harm neither, nor the release of their self-titled EP last year. Now the Rich Turvey (Darlia/The Mispers) produced and John Davis (Royal Blood/Catfish and the Bottlemen) mastered Alive is ready to awaken even broader attention and even with small reservations, expectations of success are inescapable.

Glass Caves’ new single Go sets things off and instantly lights up ears and imagination with a flame of tasty guitar and probing rhythms. It is a spicy start reinforced by strong vocals and melodic acidity which begins washing over the fiery song. The band would probably protest but there is no avoiding the resonance of Alex Turner and co which whispers loudly within the track, something many bands employ or are tailored by and certainly here adds an admittedly flavoursome hue. All the same, the song is a punchy and energetically persuasive stomp providing a strong lure into the album.

The following Driving Home is just as contagious and instantly intriguing, hooks and melodies toying with ears and emotions from the start whilst vocals, lead and backing, create a warm web of enticement. The throbbing groan of a 10665245_744010618970195_5022062840488303203_nbassline adds to the rich bait whilst guitars capture thoughts with their inventive. As gently infectious and lively as its predecessor, it swiftly shows the band has an arsenal of highly persuasive songs, a theory soon backed up by Why Stay? and Out Of Control. The first of the pair lays down a slightly more reserved but no less animated canvas for voice and guitar to colour whilst the second with a similarly restrained base, explores shadowed scenery embellished by seductive keys. Whilst there is that persistent feel of other bands, Funeral Suits coming to mind, there is real individuality and distinctive character to each song which only suggests that overall uniqueness will come with time and maturity, this track a bulging proposition of evidence with its melodies caresses and vocal drama.

Both the sonically sultry Tonight and the smouldering blaze that is Breaking Out keep the album compelling and attention gripped, the latter of the pair a track with a never realised volatile edge to its temptation bringing a dramatic edge to spark appetite and imagination. The two again show further variation in the character of songs within the album, just as the excellent Let Go. There is an extra whiff of familiarity to the song yet it only enhances its spellbinding and virulently fascinating waltz. The best track on the album with ease it is an anthem to the skills and invention of the band and for passions to enlist in.

The slow burn of Match with its rhythmic crescendos and wiry melodic coaxing is another track full of intrigue and adventure but does lacks the something which ignites earlier tracks. It still makes for a pleasing companion, one sounding bigger and better over time, before This Road brings its own tantalising scenery and melodic dance to tap another keen wave of appetite whilst Be Together in turn parades its powerful embrace of warm keys and jangly hooks. Their enterprising suasions are surpassed by the creative tension of How I Feel, a song with a melodic landscape walled by raw sonic colouring and rhythmic prowling.

The album comes to a close with Moongate, a final energetic croon of voice and sound leaving a lingering touch on ears and thoughts. It is an excellent end to a thoroughly enjoyable release. Yes there is that lack of something strikingly different to set Glass Caves apart from the many but to be fair that applies to a wealth of emerging bands of which most certainly do not make as strong and as pleasing an impression as found with Alive. Glass Caves is a band to keep a good eye on and their album one to have plenty of fun with.
