Brightlight City – Our Future’s Not Dead

Having impressed with debut EP, Adventures in 2015, British rockers Brightlight City now reveal the blossoming invention and increasing maturity in their sound with successor Our Future’s Not Dead. Hinted at by a pair of singles last year, the new release is evidence of a band building on an impressive start and potential with stylish adventure whilst nurturing a whole new promise for continued growth.

Surrey bred, Brightlight City weave in inspirations from the likes of Hundred Reasons, Million Dead, Yourcodenameis:milo, At the Drive-In, Biffy Clyro, and Jimmy Eat World into their sound; indeed sparking comparisons to the former and others such as Thursday and Hell Is For Heroes with their melody rich and harmonically honed songs. Equally there is a fresh and potent catchiness and steel to Our Future’s Not Dead which as suggested was first glimpsed within last year’s singles Gravity and Thieves. It is a growth in sound which has come with an increasing reputation and praise for their live shows through the quintet sharing stages with Max Raptor, Fizzy Blood, Bad Sign, and Blood Youth and playing alongside Rise Against and Millencolin at Envol et Macadam Festival in Canada in 2015as well as their own shows.

Recorded with Matt Hyde (Funeral For A Friend, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot), Our Future’s Not Dead is likely to spark another bout of attention and hunger for Brightlight City, setting out its persuasive strength with opener It Depends On You. Skittish beats alongside vocal and guitar offered temptation bring the song into focus; their low key yet agitated attitude soon a full roar as vocalist Jamie Giarraputo heads a web of melodic enterprise from guitarists Jonathan Staunton and Justin Giarraputo, the latter adding his own potent vocal expression to the mix. Anthemic in heart, imposing in rhythm as the hefty jabs of drummer Ben Bell court the brooding lines of bassist Tom Stock, the track roars with energy and passion.

With a mellower air Leave A Light On follows, wiry melodies swimming round a throaty bassline as emotive vocals entice with distinctive expression. Once again there is an instinctive catchiness at work, never wavering as fiery textures evolve and unite in a livelier blaze of sound and emotion. In some ways it is a less intricate proposition than its predecessor but only to its strength as each element is a flame of craft and drama before making way for Heart Stops. The third track comes coated in the infectiousness of the opener, its swinging body almost pop punk like and relentlessly coaxing listener involvement with its vocal harmonies and controlled but boisterous swing; a tenacious essence just as open in the calmer moments of a song taking best track honours.

The EP is brought to an end by Past/Future, a track epitomising the evolution in the Brightlight City sound with its rounded fusion of melody and energy amidst a new depth of contagiousness and invention. As all the songs within Our Future’s Not Dead it is a memorable and lingering encounter going to make a thoroughly enjoyable and impressing release. The Brightlight City sound has yet to become something truly unique but as the EP shows, it is well on the way and providing some rather tasty encounters along the way.

Blood Youth – Closure EP


Blood Youth hold nothing back on their new EP; their passion, fury, and intensity is fuelled to the top and going for the jugular. To that, the UK metallers also add some imaginative invention and snarling contagiousness to create one attention grabbing incitement.

The Closure EP is four tracks of punk driven metal seemingly unleashing, lyrically and physically, a pent up heart and ire. The successor to the well-received Inside My Head EP of last year, it emotionally carries on from its predecessor with guitarist Chris Pritchard recently saying about the release, “Our debut was a lyrical meltdown. It expressed the issues Kaya (vocalist Kaya Tarsus) has had for the past six years in a way he hadn’t been able to show until the band started. With this new E.P – Closure – it’s about what he once felt coming to an end. And for all of us this EP is literally closure for the personal anxiety we all felt while writing Inside My Head. The whole thing was a recovery process…Full circle.” That unleashing of emotion is an open roar backed by a sound which equally builds on its predecessor and subsequently leaves it in the shade through its voracious and creative enterprise.

BY CLosure Artwork_RingMasterReviewRecorded, as the first EP, with producer Jonny Renshaw, Closure opens with the calm yet agitated Breathe. Its brief body is a melodic coaxing of guitar and keys with the potent vocal caresses of Tarsus laying out his emotive reflection. Around it though is a tension, an underlying almost portentously melancholic air which erupts in full rigour within the following 24/7. A vocal roar sparks a stalking of the senses by predatory beats and grievous yet buoyant riffs. They do carry some restraint which is quickly thrown off once Tarsus vents with impressive expression and vocal dexterity as the rest of the band spring an inescapable web of creative animosity and temptation. On the surface, the Blood Youth sound does not strike as being overtly unique yet from a salacious bassline and the irritability of vocals, which seem to transfer their spikiness into the hungry sonic enterprise, band and song show themselves to be something imaginatively distinct and pleasingly volatile.

The song continues to twist and turn, bruising and badgering the senses whilst gripping ears with a fierce engagement of bold ideation; qualities and success continuing in Mood Swing. Living up to its name, the track is a torrent of predacious grooves and lethal hooks aligned to barbarous rhythms yet at a slip of a note becomes a melodically catchy and warmly engaging enticement of seriously catchy rock ‘n’ roll. The track is superb, Blood Youth creating the kind of slavery ears long for and the type of song which pushes bands into major spotlights.

The EP closes with its title track, the song also the new single/video from the band. Bred from the same template as the last track, it offers a warm melodic hand initially with the voice of Tarsus again impressing with its mix of clean and hoarse deliveries. Though it is easy to see why it was chosen as the lead track with its anthemic roars, it does lack the extra creative spark of Mood Swing for personal tastes yet leaves ears and emotions invigorated and hungry for more.

Blood Youth have leapt on in style from their last highly enjoyable release. If In My Head was a call to arms, Closure is a declaration of war on dark times and thoughts announcing the Harrogate band as another potential soaked and exciting proposition to add to the watch very closely list.

The Closure EP is released March 11th physically and digitally via Rude Records.

Catch Fire – The Distance I Am From You

It is a bit of a challenge to stand right out amongst the thick body of pop punk bands established and emerging; to find that sound which is easy to pick out from the crowd. Looking like they are on the way to becoming one such proposition is UK band Catch Fire. The Nottingham quintet has not exactly found that uniqueness yet but as their debut EP shows, they are definitely moving in the right direction. The Distance I Am From You EP offers four songs firmly bred in the recognisable genre design that flavours so many bands but as each track develops, Catch Fire show an imagination and willingness to inventively twist things that can only push the band away from the pack in time.

Formed in 2013 under the name Layby, the band released two EPs before last year either evolving into or re-remerging as, however you want to look at it, Catch Fire who now make their potent introduction through The Distance I Am From You courtesy of Rude Records (Set It Off, Zebrahead, Blood Youth, Light Years, Knuckle Puck). It is an encounter revelling in the surge of melodic prowess fuelling its songs and the fresh imagination coated tenacity coming from each band members; evidence of both coming straight away with opener Introspective Pt. I.

Catch Fire TDIAFY Artwork_RingMaster ReviewInstantly rugged riffs and rumbling rhythms swamp ears as vocalist Miles Kent, backed as potently by the harmonic tones of guitarist Neal Arkley, nudge attention. It is a thick but controlled beginning turning into a far friskier stroll as drummer Ash Wain’s swings become more dynamic and aggressive whilst vocals continue to easily please. That boisterous nature continues into the steely bass prowl cast by Joseph Ryan Askew’s fingers and on to the sonic blend of riffs and melodies spun by Arkley and Tim Bell. It is a heavily engaging and rousing encounter elevating to new heights and standout individualism when it canters through a low key but provocative passage of vocal shadows and harmonies within a cage of almost predatory textures.

It is an impressive start matched by latest single Bad Behaviour. It too opens with a bold and rowdy start that holds few big surprises yet grabs ears and appetite by the throat, feeding their basic needs before exploring its more inventive dexterity and ideation. Strands of spicy melody and an imposing and inventively alluring unity of drums and bass begin to emerge as the track progresses, it all blossoming into richly enticing exploits that defuse any previous scent of the band being just another formula pop punk offering.

The first two songs probably edge the other pair within The Distance I Am From You but firstly Anaesthetic has bodies bouncing and enjoyment swinging with its rapier like rhythms and fiery sonic invitation around again a strong vocal mix whilst Introspective Pt. II closes the EP off with an emotively calm acoustic caress to sink in whilst leaving one more reminder of the side by side vocal strength of Kent and Arkley as well as the thoughtful songwriting of the band.

Catch Fire are not at that point of turning UK pop punk on its head but the signs and potential are there within The Distance I Am From You, that the band have it in their ability if their imagination continues to blossom.
