Hailing from Exeter in the UK, The Dreamer Within is a band beginning to lure very potent attention with their compelling metalcore bred sound. Young as an outfit, they have already shown themselves a fresh presence and roar on the British metal scene with a stage presence that has audiences swinging s evidence by acclaimed shows with the likes of I Divide, Glamour of the Kill, Skindred, and Palisades. Recently the quintet unveiled a new video for the song Purge for another big poke at broad attention. It had us wanting to know more, so with thanks to the guys we explored the beginnings of The Dreamer Within, their new video, an impending EP, and more besides…

Hello and many thanks for taking time to talk with us.

Can you first introduce the band and give us some background to how it all started?

Alex and Charlie started writing stuff when they were at Uni many years ago…like 7 years ago (they’re both well old). They both knew each other played guitar from school but Charlie didn’t like Alex because he had better hair and knew how to play more Metallica solos than him. However they ended up jamming together in a covers band and started writing their own stuff just for fun. They’d send each other random riffs and ideas and eventually ended up putting drums to some stuff so things sounded a bit more legit. One day though, Alex decided to put some synth over one of the riffs for a joke, however there was actually no laughing matter – it sounded genius. Well actually it sounded terrible but it started to influence some other things they wrote and eventually synth became a must for any song ideas. To cut a longer story shorter: they eventually got in touch with some people who they thought might be interested in actually playing some stuff live, including Alex’s dear cousin Josh who loves to play a bit of bass. After a few years of practice, writing and re-writing everything and a couple of line-up changes we eventually managed to play a show in July 2014. Ultimately, our love of metalcore probably brought us together, plus we all really like wearing vests. We all have pretty similar music tastes though, ranging from more straight up metal to trance/EDM so going down the contemporary metalcore route was a pretty natural thing for us.

What sparked the decision to form the band and the direction it was to take?

It’s always been quite a natural development, we all love our music heavy and full of synth! As mentioned above, the original conception of the band happened years ago (you can probably still find the original version of Recovery on the internet without having to look too hard) and the direction of the band really just came from a culmination of the things we love about music, minus Taylor Swift’s voice though unfortunately.

The Dreamer Within_RingMasterReviewIs there any specific meaning behind the name?

Choosing our name was a stressful time. We all had terrible ideas and it got pretty frustrating as all the super cool names were taken according to numerous Google searches.  We agonized over so many until one day at practice, Charlie lost it and said “right, I’m going to my car to get my mountain dew and packet of cashews, I want a name by the time I return…” and sure enough, Eliott came up with The Dreamer Within. It probably reminds us most of Charlie being furious and eating cashew nuts, although on a more serious note, we liked it as it vibed well with our style as a lot of our lyrics relate to recognising what’s important within oneself and looking at the world outside the box if you catch our drift. At the core of it, the name refers to the part of yourself that is dormant inside that aspires for greater experiences.

Tell us about your early days as a band; the unforeseen surprises and difficulties which you came up against that maybe musicians do not expect or realise will show themselves.

It’s still pretty early days really! I think one thing we never really considered was just how much effort (and equipment) has to go into creating the kind of sound that we have to manipulate live. I’d say one of the biggest surprises was probably when we played our first show after releasing our debut single Heart of Mine as originally we just wanted to release some music and play a live gig to say that we’d done it; the feedback was so overwhelming that we decided to keep going and never really looked back. In hindsight we could have probably done a far better job at getting ourselves shows at the start – we ended up waiting to be asked by other bands a lot which was awesome when it happened but it did mean we struggled to keep ourselves booked up. Ultimately, we realised that everyone in the local Exeter scene was super nice and talking to people/other bands was the best way to get about. Typically, no one ever has any batteries and we use A LOT of batteries for all the wireless stuff etc. The amount of times we’ve had to do an emergency battery run before a show is ridiculous – we never learn! Josh is the worst for this and also equipment in general. One show we played in Plymouth had him kneeling on the floor playing after his strap broke mid set. Obviously he didn’t have any sort of backup plan so the drummer from The Core of IO had to duct-tape it up for him while he was playing…we looked really awesome…

As you say, it has been a relatively short time that The Dreamer Within has been around; how would you say your sound has evolved in that time?

To be honest not that much – the first two songs we released in 2014: Heart of Mine and Recovery 2.0 are songs that were written alongside a few others that we actually had in mind for our up and coming EP so we’re still very much influenced by our original ideas. We guess that people can probably expect a far heavier EDM presence in some of our more recent compositions but essentially we want to get better at what we started doing rather than change our sound loads of times before people really get to know us.

Do you write and create as a unit?

Alex and Charlie often lay down the primary structure for most of the tunes as they’re both guitarists. They also have the responsibility of recording, mixing and mastering everything so it makes sense for them to take the lead on that side of things. However overall the songs come together from everyone’s ideas as Eliott is a keen synth composer and Matt handles pretty much all the lyrical side of things. As much as we make fun of him, Josh is a sick bass player and he rarely has to be taught anything and is happy to write his own bass parts rather than mimic the guitars…All pretty harmonious really.

 You recently released the video for new track Purge. Tell us about the song’s theme first of all.

Purge is primarily about recognising agents of deception and control in everyday life and “Purging” the feeling that you need to conform to believing what’s force fed to you or allow yourself to be easily influenced by common sources of information. Essentially the message is ‘don’t believe everything you read/see, don’t just sit there letting the world carry you along, get out there and find your own truth.’ We hope we don’t sound too cliché and political!

The press release with its announcement suggested that your new tracks, as well as being more creatively imposing and inventive, have “a darker lyrical tone.” Can you elaborate upon that and The Dreamer Within2_RingMasterReviewdoes Purge epitomise that evolution or are there further dark depths to be discovered?

We think the darker elements come from the overall feel of the songs themselves rather than the lyrics. We find it impossible to write anything in a major key! However regardless of what the song is about, lyrically we always try and put a positive spin on things to inspire a more uplifting feel.

What kind of things most inspires the band’s lyrical side?

We like writing about mankind’s place in the Universe, why we’re all here, what we should be doing while we are here etc. We are all really into space and all that cool stuff so we’d like to think our songs have a really big epic feel to them. We also like writing about some supernatural/potentially supernatural stuff as we think that a lot of potential answers to the world’s great mysteries could lie in thinking a bit more radically than the norm. Our first single, Heart of Mine is actually about Final Fantasy 7 which is one of our favourite video games. Video games are a theme we’d like to explore more in the future. All of us are also massive Star Wars fans so you can probably expect to hear a song in the future that mentions about how Rey from the new film is the greatest female ever.

Back to the video; who did you film it with?

An ace gent who goes by the name of Ben Lumber; the frontman of Acres who are currently killing it in Europe.

Did you, as a band, have a particular idea for it in mind or left it to the director etc. to come up with the basis for what is certainly an eye catching, ear pleasing proposal.

We scouted out what we thought was a pretty cool location for a first video. To be perfectly honest we took a lot of influence from videos that came out in the golden 2008 – 2012 metalcore/(dare we say it) crabcore era. It’s not a big surprise to hear that we love all that stuff. Because it was all performance based, it was up to us to choreograph our moves and group shots. We tried to throw in as much energy from our live shows as possible so what you see in the video is pretty close to what we pull off live, although that can be dependent on the size of the venue! Ben had some great ideas for angles and solo shots etc. but we had a lot of input in the visual side of things and Ben was great at listening to our ideas and working with us.

I believe the band is working on a new EP? Can you give us some insight and spoilers to that?

Cheeky 😉 I think we can probably let slip that the EP is going to be called This Is Not Our Home and will be out at the end of May. It will be made up of 5 tracks including Purge and another new song we’re doing a video for very soon. After listening all the way through, you should end up feeling like you’ve just danced with the Incredible Hulk at a rave until 6am.

Apart from the EP, what is in store for The Dreamer Within fans from hereon in across 2016?

We’ve got some really cool festival announcements coming up over the next few months including Massacre Fest in Gloucester. We also have our first tour booked from June 1st to 5th with High Rise, Follow the Wolf, and Last Hounds which we’re stupidly excited for. It will be our first time playing most of the venues on the schedule including dates in Leeds, Leamington Spa, and London so we’re really looking forward to seeing how we go down in places that aren’t near the South West.

We’re inspired by a lot of the bands that people wouldn’t be surprised by like Asking Alexandria, Abandon All Ships and Enter Shikari etc. Although collectively, it’s not unusual to see us listening to artists/bands like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Bullet for my Valentine, Trivium, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Erra, Funeral for a Friend, Paramore, and The Lonely Island to name a few.

Spawned from the notoriously haunted city of York, Amongst Thieves bring their driving, intense and colossal sound to the winding streets of this ancient landscape. Composed of Josh Nash (Vocals), Alex Morgan (Guitar), Ricky Kwong (Guitar), Jason Bentley (Bass) and Andy Ackroyd (Drums), Amongst Thieves slowly gathered their band members until they all clicked into place to create their own concoction of modern melodic and dynamic music akin to the likes of fellow home-towners ‘Asking Alexandria’, ‘Young Guns’, and Falling In Reverse.

Every Hour Kills – Almost Human

Rousing up anticipation and subsequently impatience for the release of their forthcoming self-titled EP, Canadian melodic metallers Every Hour Kills recently released new single Almost Human. The song is a roar of energy and skill which confirms the emerging potency of the band, already shown in their previous pair of singles, whilst revealing an even more striking adventure and creative ferocity in their sound. It is a highly infectious proposition crafted in arguably recognisable creative inks but casting a fresh and magnetic landscape.

The seeds of the Calgary bred Every Hour Kills began three to four years ago, when drummer Rob Shawcross (ex- Out Of Your Mouth, ex-Autobody, ex-Kobra and The Lotus) linked up with guitarist Sacha Laskow after his departure from Divinity. The pair subsequently brought in bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust, ex-Death Valley Dolls) and vocalist Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (Walk As Chaos, ex-Out of Your Mouth, ex-Autobody, ex-the R.A.C.E.) to complete the band’s line-up. With a name inspired by an anonymous literary quote which says “Every hour wounds, but the last one kills.“, Every Hour Kills has spent the time since forming working on and recording songs, which included the already released pair of singles, Deliver Us in 2013 and the following EHK_AH_900 smallyear the Joey Sturgis (Asking Alexandria, Emmure, Of Mice & Men, We Can As Romans) produced Chosen. Now with that impending EP on a close horizon, the band has set another spark burning in ears and appetite through Almost Human, a song showing even greater persuasion and adventure than that which fuelled its predecessors.

An electro bubble grows and explodes in a tempest of rigorously gripping rhythms and tenacious riffs as the song consumes and grips ears straight away. It is captivating start swiftly built upon by the excellent vocal prowess of Maxwell-Lyster and the breath-taking technical rapidity and enterprise of Laskow’s fingers and guitar. There is a blend of Sevendust and Dommin to the song, with just a hint of Disturbed and a louder whisper of In Flames, yet Almost Human soon reveals an individual character to its increasingly magnetic presence.

The song continues to croon and bellow across its intoxicating landscape, each turn of sound and ideation generally finding the middle ground between the two whilst the shapely invention which cores it all also embraces an industrial/electro metal adventure at times, a Rabbit Junk like spice fusing to the adrenaline sparking charge of the song.

Almost Human is a compelling offering and hint, and if the new EP can back it up with songs just as virulently convincing, we are in for one thrilling treat later this year.

Us Amongst The Rest – Follow the Truth

Impassioned and skilfully driven, the alternative rock bred sound running through Follow the Truth is an easily impressive proposition. The debut album from UK band Us Amongst The Rest, it contains twelve tracks which are ablaze with invention and emotive fire to spark a definite keen appetite for their creators. It is a curious affair though, in that it impresses and oozes enterprise on every level but lacks the indefinable spark to completely excite. To be fair there are tracks where it is easy to shout loud about their potency and thrilling presence but ultimately the album is more about the sizeable potential within it leading to an anticipation of big things for and from the band ahead.

Formed in 2012, the quartet from York is a maturely accomplished proposition through the previous exploits and experiences of its members and an obvious instinctive ability to write infectious and intelligently sculpted rock songs. Follow the Truth provides all the evidence needed to back up that claim, the album which was recorded with Sam and Joe Graves (Axewound, Glamour of the Kill, Asking Alexandria) at InnerSounds Studios, a collection of stylishly crafted and passionately paraded intriguing encounters. Lyrically its songs are themed by personal struggles and emotional conflicts and again this only adds to the undeniable emotive blaze at the heart of release and contents.

From its piano shaped atmospheric Intro, the album swiftly cages ears and imagination with Fields of Fray and its feisty blaze of thumping rhythms and aggressive riffs. It comes bound in an instantly engaging melodic enticement from guitarists Danny Beardmore and Dan Stockdale, resulting in a stirring entrance soon enhanced by the excellent and increasingly impressive vocals of bassist Karl Sandor. Once established the track settles in to a powerful stride of sonic and melodic tenacity, like a mix of Atreyu and Alterbridge with spicing from 30 Seconds to Mars and the band’s own inventive twists. It is a pleasing if unspectacular beginning to the album which is straight away reinforced by Love Is the Bull. Punctuated by the punchy beats of Paul Fernandez, the track supplies emotional flames over persuasive guitar and bass temptation to wrap ears and thoughts in provocative textures and expression. As the album in many ways, it is hard to announce real originality to the song but easy to announce the superb craft and melodic depths within it.

Bring the Fuel is another matter, a track to wax lyrical about with pumping energy and contagious enterprise uniting for an anthemic stomp lorded masterfully over by the voice of Sandor and the inventive adventure of the guitars. The Us Amongst The Rest album artworksinger’s bass exploits too find a heady virulence in their temptation matched by the crisp jabs of Fernandez. With essences of Avenged Sevenfold definitely spicing up the excellent track, it makes for the first pinnacle of the album and no surprise it has raised such interest and anticipation for the album as a single alone in a great many.

The track gives a tough task to follow for both Blood in Me and Angels, one which they provide strong offerings in reply. The first of the two is a pungent mix of scorching melodies and stabbing riffs resulting in a track which sways from seductive warmth to antagonistic intensity with seamless success whilst the second is a radiant power ballad confirming the vocal and individual skills of the band perfectly. As with many of the songs it does not startle but leaves a healthy appetite in place for the album and the band’s emerging diversity in songwriting and presence.

The excellent title track steps up next, it’s initial almost melancholic idle up to ears again a refreshing caress of vocal and melodic expression which leads to a richer and forceful sonic fire framed by probing rhythms. It is a slow burner of a song to some extent but another emerging as one of the album’s highlights before stepping aside for the less successful but enjoyable Silver & Lead. Expectations are not left hungry by the track but still fed a tasty slab of melodic metal which sparks only satisfaction which next up Horizons gives a spicier rewarding incitement to through its catchy grooves and dramatic heart bred tenacity.

Unforgettable similarly gets feet and ears swiftly on board if passions are left more reserved with its creative resourcefulness and vocal potency whilst Rise whips up another riveting anthem. Arguably the most inventive track on the album with its subtle vocal twists and entwining sonic threads, it is a tantalising proposition which as all tracks is drenched in the potential suggesting that the band will ascend to impressive heights ahead.

Completed by the very decent and pleasing Falling Skies, which also vocally features Sam Graves, Follow The Truth is undeniably an impressive and attention grabbing release which raises expectations and hopes for Us Amongst The Rest, something going by their first release you can see the band probably surpassing with relish and ease.

Surviving The Charade – We’re Never Coming Home

First impressions of We’re Never Coming Home, the debut album from Swedish melodic metallers Surviving The Charade, went from being slightly underwhelmed to inexcusably captivated as it revealed more about the qualities and imagination of the band with each and every track. Given numerous excursions through the ears, the ten track encounter has become a rigorously impressive and exciting proposition for imagination and emotions. Certainly it still has thoughts questioning and succumbing to occasional reservations, but with the voracious inventiveness and surging potential which soaks the band both Surviving The Charade and We’re Never Coming Home have emerged as incitements to get increasingly excited about.

Formed in 2008, the Stockholm sextet took little time in awakening a potent fanbase and attention with first EP Your Breath Smells Like Ben & Jerry’s. Its strong presence was more than matched by the band’s live performances which continued to draw eager followers towards their striking emergence. The following We Refuse To Stand In EP continued their rising success as did the band’s appearances at prominent festivals and supporting metalcore greats Adept. 2013 saw Surviving The Charade drop in on England to record We’re Never Coming Home with producer John Mitchell at Outhouse Studios (Architects, Enter Shikari, You Me At Six, etc.). Infusing inspirations from the likes of Asking Alexandria and Architects into their sound, Surviving The Charade provide an intriguing weave of textures and flavours within their first album, a web which as mentioned impresses and at times has you wondering but persistently leaves ears and attention captivated.

The title track starts things off and this is where that initial felling of being underwhelmed initiated. Certainly the opening of crystalline DVDAXXX2XX.pdfkey cast melodies set before vocals squalls from a distant ledge is an enticing lead into the accomplished and skilfully crafted song but subsequently it is a formulaic encounter which barely hints at the real adventure to come. Nevertheless with punchy rhythms from drummer Sebastian Brydniak framing the evocative narrative impressively led by the clean vocals of Simon Brantklev, the track is an imposing introduction which with its brief length is the right way to look at it even though it kind of gives the wrong impression of the album ahead.

Classically bred keys grasp the ears first as Shout, Walls, Shout! erupts, a startling unexpected grab of the imagination which soars over the hostile raw squalls of the band’s other vocalist Daniel Rotstam. It is a pungently dramatic and creative entrance to the song though some of that potency is lost as it then relaxes into a more straight forward melodic metal stride. To temper that though the bass of Fredric Fji Johansson gnaws at the senses whilst the guitars of Fredrik Brollin and Viktor Lundberg grind, whine, and croon with acute devilry. It is a formidable suasion which leaves its predecessor quite pale in comparison, though as skilled and commanding as the music is, it is the vocals which steal the show, the clean tones of Brantklev a transfixing caress and the roars in great variety from Rotstam carnivorously appealing if not always fully successful.

The following Above The Skyline stomps and seduces with a blend of classically bred elegance and ferocious antagonism vocally and musically, hooks and melodies in as much abundance and strength as heavily swiping rhythms and savage riffs. It is a riveting encounter which lurches at and romps with the senses in an evolving gait but lacks the spark which lit up its predecessor. It does give another flavoursome taste to an already established appetite for the release though which is soon enriched by the outstanding Shotgun Wedding Bride. From its first breath the song is ripping at the jugular with sinewed sculpted riffs and rhythms courted by caustic vocals whilst a haunting melody teases above the ravenous persuasion. The body of the track has a post hardcore hostility to its rabidity which takes on another depth of angst and ferociousness behind the clean seducing of Brantklev which in also seems to inspire a creative rapaciousness from the stabs of Brydniak and the varied snarls from Rotstam. It is a tremendous brawl which reveals the rich promise of the band ahead and their quality now.

The initial voracious intensity and Meshuggah like blaze The Diary Of Frosty Jack keeps ears and passions feverish with its truculent sonic and rhythmic intent, though the cleaner passages whilst adding further poetic toxicity defuse the breath-taking intimidation a tad. It is another immensely satisfying onslaught though, which as across the album, for every moment where things lack certain potency or success in their twists there is a horde of highly inventive, captivating sounds and ideation to enthral thoughts and emotions.

The vivaciously anthemic Here We Stand where emotive melodies and fiery harmonies stake their lingering claim on the imagination within a maelstrom of predacious intensity leaves imagination and attention exhausted next. Of. It is a tremendous fire enticing creative thought with a dramatic presence which leaves the next up Broken Glass a real test to emulate, which it almost does with its robust and blistering contagion within a continually shifting storm of emotive melodic grace and adversarial spite.

The predatory metalcore spawned sound of Dance For Messiah brings another inventive tempest to explore though it fails to enslave the passions with either the lingering vitriol or infectiousness of other songs. It is full of great and skilfully executed twists and turns but feels too familiar in its overall body of sound ultimately, thus feeding expectations somewhat. It also suffers lying between the previous pair of songs and Like Animals. Virulently infectious and strikingly inventive, the track is a relentlessly evolving dervish of argumentative seduction and amicable ingenuity, a song which if human would be classed as schizophrenic for many thrilling reasons. It is an outstanding slab of captivation, everything about it sensational and the best thing on the album.

The closing The Night We All Forgot is a song which may be should not work but does. Its opening chorus of vocals and throaty basslines is so obvious that you feel the band is just going for an easy exit, but then things turn into a threatening stretch of savagery vocally and musically that you swiftly reassess. The song continues to change and bewilder, its melodic almost pop infused moments an unsure success and its vicious inhospitable pillaging irresistible, whilst combined they ebb and flow in persuasion. It is whole though the song is a fixture in mind and emotions long after its departure so that like the album no matter any doubts it is an undeniable triumph.

It is hard not to get excited about the future of Surviving The Charade and to cast a keen anticipation for their next releases on the back of We’re Never Coming Home, a reaction we expect a great many to find through this gripping encounter.

Swedish riff beasts ‘Surviving The Charade’ set loose their killer debut album ‘We’re Never Coming Home’, out nationwide from Monday 2nd June.

Tugging from a range of sources, from the driving onslaught of Architects, through to the power of Bring Me The Horizon and Asking Alexandria, Surviving The Charade have shaped a sound that pushes and pulls, but is undoubtedly utterly captivating.

Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden and formed in 2008, Surviving The Charade instantly hit the ground running with the national release of their first EP ‘Your Breath Smells Like Ben & Jerry’s’. The record captured the imagination of the underground, and aided by blistering live performances, word soon began to spread about the band. Surviving The Charade upped the ante with their follow up EP ‘We Refuse To Stand In’ and prominent festival appearances further solidified the six-some’s blossoming reputation. Supports with ADEPT, extensive touring throughout their homeland and the release of their single ‘The Supernaturals’ has helped to push the band to new audiences. Last year STC hit England to work with esteemed producer John Mitchell at Outhouse Studios (Architects, Enter Shikari, You Me At Six, etc.) on their debut full length album, ‘We’re Never Coming Home’, and the resulting recordings are breathtaking.

Now armed with their killer album, the Euro slayers are set to blow your head clean off. The record starts in rich form, refusing to hold back as ‘Shout, Walls, Shout!’ soon tears through your ear drums, while offering a steady killer hook. ‘Above The Skyline’ continues to demonstrate the band’s deft ability to fuse biting hardcore with an anthemic refrain. As the record develops, ‘The Diary of Frosty Jack’ comes over you with blistering pace and stout groove before ‘Here We Stand’ dips to showcase the band’s growing maturity and more expansive songwriting. As the album flows, ‘The Night We All Forgot’ closes the record with a potent slab of gritty metalcore that is sure to beat your head into submission.

Fates Upon Us: Self Titled EP

In a year of what seems like a flood of emerging metalcore type bands, to truly standout from the masses a release needs to be exceptional and instantly inventive. Whether the debut self titled EP from Yorkshire band Fates Upon Us is such a release is debatable but the five track EP certainly marks the band as one full of obvious promise and refreshing imagination. The finding of their distinct voice is an assumption you can only see the band fulfilling ahead whilst their first release certainly elevates them enough within the ranks of similarly fuelled bands, to make them ones to watch closely.

Formed in August of last year, the Sheffield quintet took no time in finding a keenly receptive local audience to their live performances and sounds, a repeating occurrence as they slowly ventured out into the whole county and beyond. Good success in heats of the Corporation Battle Of The Bands competition has followed their strong beginning as well as a UK tour with Gold Skies Ahead. With comparisons to the likes of Asking Alexandria, A Day To Remember, and Bullet For My Valentine placed upon them, the band now unleash their debut release with a destined national awareness and fervour on their horizon.

Don’t Hate The Player, Hate The Game starts off the storm with resonating and intimidating riffs matched by towering rhythms and oppressive intensity. It is not a ferocious entrance but one which ensures instant focus in its direction. The vocals of Danny Costello send squalls of vehemence across the landscape of the song  whilst the guitars of Carl Tyler and Danny Hattersley fire flames of accomplished sonics and blistering melodic shards upon the senses. As a scowling predator the track is excellent but does suffer a little with the inclusion of clean vocals and an accompanying dip in intensity. It is not enough to unsettle the track but hindsight, after the others songs have stated their claim and disrupted the air, does offer a little surprise as to why certainly the vocals do not work as strongly as elsewhere where the cleaner tones are easily as impressive as the growling consumptions.

Nevertheless it is a  great start which is immediately elevated with the full steam stomp of Have Fun Storming The Castle, a track as unbridled in its passion and energy as it is in rifling the ear with sharp riffs and contagious ideas. The vocals are spot on in both extremes of delivery to put previous slight wrongs in context whilst the rhythms of Carl Jackson thump and barrack the ear with little restraint or mercy. As mentioned earlier whether the track is distinct enough like the release as a whole to garner the full praise it maybe deserves is arguable but as a feisty companion it leaves one wanting very little more.

The third track If Cats Had Opposable Thumbs brings another flaw, this time in its production levels which are too low so the track sounds like it is playing from a room away. It is a shame as the track itself is great but the drop does override the enjoyment somewhat. The track itself is a brawling confrontation merged with expressive melodic imagination and stirring energies. By this point though that similarity to other bands is strong, Fates Upon Us offer plenty to suggest their future sound will see them rise from the pack. The immersive mellow and enveloping weaves from keys and vocals sink seamlessly into the harsher heart of the song to show skilled craft and thoughtful endeavour to the songwriting, not something which can always be applied to other bands.

Back at full levels, Boys, We’ve Struck Gold is an instant winner, its expressive warm gentle initial tones erupting into a furnace of demanding yet rewarding aggressive and inventive ventures. The track barges one to the ground, leaving you a bruised victim to its intense anger but just as easily and passionately stretches out revitalising and reassuring melodic hands to steady and expand the heart to its imagination. Arguably for really the first time bassist Danny O’Keefe can step from the aural shadows to show his hunter skills as well as the continual depth he brings all songs. It is another exciting and captivating track offering great futures.

Closing with the relatively straight forward Hobo With A Shotgun, the EP is one which is impossible to lose in the pack whilst still within its stirring ranks.. Fates Upon Us though inspire expectations of great promise and a clear escape in the future to set them well apart from the throng.
