For all the exceptional punk releases and bands igniting the rock scene over recent years, there is no still no substitute yet for the special tingle which only lifts its head with a ‘77 found roar. As we all know, it is a never diminishing inspirational period for punk rock and the never ending torrent of bands spawning their own identity with its antagonistic hues. Some breed a sound which is as close a cousin as you could wish for, amongst them The Kingcrows who are simply a rousing bridge between the late seventies and modern punk ‘n’ roll. Their previous releases have already made that declaration but new album Funland sets it in stone, the UK quartet involving the listener in something energetically aggressive, attitude driven, and most of all undiluted sleaze wrapped fun.

Hailing from Leeds, the quartet of vocalist Phil E Stine, guitarist Lee J., bassist Rocco, and drummer Ratbag have been a bruising and thrilling live presence across the north of England moving outwards. Emerging in 2005, The Kingcrows has torn up stages with their filthy rock ‘n’ roll ever since, playing alongside the likes of Spear Of Destiny, UK Subs, The Rezillos, TV Smith, Anti Nowhere League, Tokyo Dragons, Vice Squad, The Lurkers, 999, The Vibrators, Red Alert, The Outcasts, Peter & The Test Tube Babies and many more legendary and emerging bands over the years. They have also released a clutch of attention grabbing EPs, which made an even bigger impression when collected together and released in the shape of Corvus Maximus through STP Records in 2013. The album awoke a broader focus and awareness of the band’s unfussy and virulent sound, which Funland should now push into new spotlights and recognition.

The album erupts with Here We Go, the first riot initially blooming from a fairground organ and its warm invitation. Soon rhythms rumble with attitude and riffs stir up the air as the opener’s eager rock ‘n’ roll seizes ears and attention. The song is quickly into its virulent and persistent stride, cruising with jabbing beats spearing grouchy guitar and bass tenacity. The track is like a mix of Spunk Volcano and The Eruptions and The Adicts, similarity and nostalgia colluding with fresh attitude and revelry.

cover_RingMaster Review     A potent start to the album is further ignited by the following She’s My Rock ‘N’ Roll and its thrilling tempting. An alluring rhythmic enticing sparks a rockabilly bred grooving flirted with by spicy harmonica, they in turn kick-starting a heavy anthemic canter of contagious rhythms and incendiary sonic enterprise led by the ever magnetic tones of Stine. The track is glorious, punk rock at its tenacious and riotous best, and again as old school as it is imposingly new. The album’s first major pinnacle is backed, if not quite matched, by On The Road Again, a swiftly engaging and infectious stomp which has ears, feet, and appetite locked in within a handful of chords and resourceful seconds. There are no big surprises within song and arguably Funland in general, yet they only provide a nonstop and fully satisfying stomp to get eagerly involved in.

A southern whisper lines the lure and rampage of Rock ‘N’ Roll Rebel Songs, the track aflame with sultry guitar endeavour, inviting group vocals, and the breath and atmosphere of ’77. Lyrically it also sparks memories of times past, it all colluding in one easy going and gripping persuasion, though outshone by Forgotten Son straight after. Its opening riff comes with dark intent and imagination igniting attitude, its bait continuing to enthral as the song grows and breeds new sonic colour and lyrical drama around it. There is a touch of Angelic Upstarts to the encounter though that is but one flavour within the emotive shadows and provocative narrative on offer.

The album’s title track kicks up a storm of attitude and insatiable rock ‘n’ roll next, the track forcibly prowling with essences of bands like Suburban Studs and Crisis in its armoury before making way for the irresistible presence of Kick ‘Em Down. The album is truly at its loftiest height at this point, the tasty provocateur, and its predecessor, unleashing welcomingly bullying and virulently infectious rock ‘n’ roll with the second also unveiling another tonic of harmonica belligerence, before the brilliant Apocalypso steals the whole show. Opening on a delicious throaty bass riff with tendrils of guitar adding their spice before the drums create a brooding and catchy confrontation, the track evolves into one seriously magnetic shuffle. The beats of Ratbag continue to incite song and ears with their anthemic swings, whilst around them voice, riffs, and contagion ebb and flow like virulent waves soaked in inescapable temptation.

Never Gonna Fall continues the album’s elevated and invigorating energy and enjoyment with ease, its thumping presence and gait luring many strains of rock into one bulging incitement whilst Sick Of Love Songs creates its own individual fusion of old school punk and new rock ‘n’ roll. The bass of Rocco breeds a bestial snarl to its tone whilst Lee J. once again leaves sonic vapours from his searing and ever to the point exploits. Led by the beckoning delivery of Stine, the track is another hitting the sweet spot whilst proving to be another proposition you only wish its two or so minutes was stretches longer.

Funland ends with Beer and Whiskey, arguably the weakest song on the album. In context though, with it holding ears and pleasure firmly in its rip-roaring escapade, it simply reinforces the might of the tracks which over shadow it. It is indeed a fine end to an excellent slab of rock ‘n’ roll, Funland rigorously feeding appetites for seventies punk and today’s punk ‘n’ roll from start to finish.

2015 has already been blessed with some mighty punk offerings which The Kingcrows now rival if not surpass with their new proposal, but few of those others will become as big a favourite as Funland is destined to be we suggest.

Preying on ears with the primal snarl of early Killing Joke, the punk fury of Amen, and the raw salacious bloodlust of Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13, UK metal punks Generation Graveyard has become one of the eagerly talked about new protagonists of the European horror punk scene, and it is easy to see why with the release of new EP, Lonewolves. The band’s official debut release, it is a predatory assault on the senses and a stirring incitement to thoughts and emotions. It is hard to say that it is going to be the most startlingly original thing you will hear this year yet the London quintet unleash their venom and antagonism with a blend of flavours and impassioned vitriol to stand apart from the crowd and excite with undeniably ferocious potential.

Since its conception in the latter part of 2009, Generation Graveyard has earned a strong and impressive reputation through their live performances which has seen the band share stages with the likes of Misfits, Anti-Nowhere League, The 69 Eyes, Black Breath, Viking Skull, Warrior Soul, The Defiled, and most recently supporting Breed77 on their full UK tour. Fusing rich essences of hardcore, rock n roll, black metal, and crust into their metal punk voracity, the band’s next big step hits potently out in sound and lyrical intent, casting hostility amongst things at life and urban isolation, society and social upheaval, and substance dependence. As suggested Lonewolves is not reshaping a scene but it does make it impossible to ignore or resist the band’s fury.

The release immediately stands intimidatingly over ears, stirring thing up with caustic riffs and short sonic taunts whose acidic discontent is punctuated by occasional thumps of rhythms. The entrance of Abominate/Desolate is a Generation Graveyard - Lonewolves EP coverslow enticement which almost preys on its recipient before opening up a broader wash of guitar incitement around a sturdy stride. Once the drums start rumbling along with beats which seem to coax further the already impressive vindictive bass flirtation, the track takes to full hostile flight within its still stalking gait and the similar stance of vocalist Max’s grizzled growls. Dark addictive grooves and surges of scarring riffs continue to flourish within the brawling presence of the song, but it is the almost deceptively menacing bass and spiral of melodic guitar enterprise which leave the lingering impression of the strong and potent starter.

Things kick up another gear in attack and pleasure with Human Hive, the song scurrying urgently through ears from its opening breath and teasing attention with heavily poking beats within a maelstrom of sonic causticity. There is a more open contagiousness to the song than within its predecessor, a lure providing a dangerous and virulent seduction. Sonic groans and ravenous riffs stalk throughout the track’s rippling body, adding intimidation to the web of infectious persuasion and adversarial endeavour honed into one gripping confrontation. With Max offering a Casey Chaos like combativeness to his tones and the guitars an unrelenting and varied squall of abrasing enticement littered with thick hooks, the track ignites an already open appetite with ease.

The Empty strikes next, again a song making an initial quarrelsome impression veined by sonic bait clad in riveting invention and enticement. The track stomps and bustles with attitude and impatient ire, eager to start a fight or incite a riotous commotion. It is a pleasing and easy to embrace slab of unfriendly provocation but lacks the spark and quite simply the addiction forging qualities of the previous pair. Nevertheless it is another strong lure into band and release before the incendiary punk storm that is Deletist savages ears. It is as raw and as vicious as it gets on the release, every note and syllable a raucous enmity whilst the rhythms just puncture the body with their verging on malevolent antisocial attack. Like the last song it lacks some of the lures of certainly its successor but counters that with pure venom and hardcore punk voraciousness.

The title track takes over to steal best song honours, its Misfits like opening the doorway into the epidemically anthemic roar of the song. Rhythms and riffs spare little time to size up their victim, jabbing and raging respectively with the hunger and rabidity of a restless social uprising. Hooks and grooves play incessantly with the imagination whilst the group calls to stand up and roar simply provide the icing on the ridiculously thrilling cake. It is a great finale to an increasingly impressing release though certainly on the CD there is also a bonus track, the Stereo Juggernaut remix of Human Hive which offers a more than decent stomp to fling limbs to.

Lonewolves is a dramatically healthy and intensely promising introduction to Generation Graveyard, one easily showing why the fuss from those in the know towards the band. You feel though that there is much more to come and be explored within the band ahead than shown on the excellent release, which makes their future rather exciting.

Hotly-tipped UK metal punks ‘Generation Graveyard’ are poised to break out to the nation with their blistering new EP ‘Lonewolves’, which hits stores on Monday 21st July.

Inspired by urban isolation, an outcast lifestyle and social upheaval, Generation Graveyard are candid and straightforward, refusing to bite their tongues and be pigeon-holed. With a vast cross-section of influences stemming from hardcore, old school rock n roll, black metal and crust delivered with a vicious punk venom, Generation Graveyard have established themselves as the antithesis to the UK music’s current alternative scene.

 

Conceived at the end of 2009 and hailing from London, Generation Graveyard are 100% committed to the execution and creation of their craft. Through widespread gigging and intense rehearsing, the rising five-some have finely tuned their live show, which has led to them being selected for support slots with names such as The Misfits, Anti-Nowhere League, The 69 Eyes, Breed77, Black Breath, Viking Skull, Warrior Soul and The Defiled. The Londoners have also recently successfully supported Breed77 on their full UK tour.

 

Now the stage is set for the lively noiseniks to firmly stamp their mark on the UK scene and they have the ammunition in the shape of their new EP ‘Lonewolves’. The record bursts out of the blocks with the pounding openings of ‘Abominate/Desolate’ which goes right for the jugular and it’s a real introduction to what’s ahead. The blistering punk rock fury of ‘Human Hive’ is next up, as it attacks your senses at breakneck speed. The stout ballsy vigour of ‘The Empty’ continues in supreme vein before the vibe shifts with the industrial guile of ‘Deletist’. The record closes with the anthemic and down-right fantastical ‘Lonewolves’. Miss this band at your peril!

Anti Nowhere League/The Damn Garrison – Split EP

As criticised as they were praised in many quarters from their first days for their true DIY punk simplicity and unpolished confrontational often salacious musical craft and attitude, UK punk legends Anti Nowhere League soon outrode their critics to become one of the most loved antagonists. A new split through Rebel Sound release sees the band at their adversarial inhospitable best alongside New Hampshire Oi punks The Damn Garrison, a union made in middle finger heaven. The link up makes for four tracks of punk rock which are as soaked in aggression and mischief as in anthemic provocation, and on the Anti Nowhere League side unbridled irreverence. They are a quartet of tracks which unreservedly feed the base desires of all punk fans.

The first pair of songs provided by Anti Nowhere League are a couple which previously could only be found on their Pig Iron CD and tracks which Captain Oi refused to release. Day The World Turned Gay pulls no punches as it uncages potent hooks and insatiable grooves into a mesh of punk rock causticity lyrically and sonically straight away. The Tunbridge Wells quartet of vocalist Animal, guitarist Tommy, bassist Shady, and drummer Nato, cast a riff and rhythmic slavery which is simply prime punk rock. Certainly the song is not touching new plateaus in originality of band or scene but equally it is virulent choice ANL which stands apart wantonly and excitingly from the rest. Its might is replicated and increased by the following The Adventures Of Peter Vile, of course another song with no regard and blinkers to ‘boundaries’, going places where most fear even contemplating. Once again a weave of intrusive hooks and riling riffs create a web of ridiculously catchy bait to which vocals unfurl an equally riveting, irreverent, and forcibly honest narrative. Again it is what you expect an ANL track to be and stand up as, and again a wholly invigorating provocation reminding just how important and rigorously rewarding the band has been and still is to a great many of us.

Hailing from Dover, N.H. and formed in the summer of 2012, The Damn Garrison has swiftly made their presence a potent and thrilling one OB-GD17D.pdfon stage where they have played with the likes of Murphys Law, Infa Riot, The Warriors, Bishops Green, Evil Conduct and many more and through their four track 7” release through Arrest Records, Unsung Heroes. Consisting of vocalist Mike Day, guitarists Ritchie and Sammy Plante, bassist James Morin, and drummer Chad Lafrance, the quintet instantly unleash a thick infectious anthem of a bruising on the split with The Real Ones. An intensely coaxing bassline and crisp beats sets things in motion, their strong bait scythed through with thrusts of guitar. It is an immediately enticing affair which increases its call with a raw scowl of vocals which enter the fray as the track settles into a voracious charge, group shouts and juicy hooks adding extra spice to the temptation. As with the ANL tracks, the band is not forging new avenues but certainly lying fresh addictive and thrilling designs on to an established template.

The band’s second track Pride & Honor again leads with a great bass enticement which is soon smothered with irritable beats and rowdy riffs matched by excellent vocal squalls, singularly and as a group. As great as both songs are it must be admitted, as suckers for toxic basslines with as much groove and infectiousness to them as contagious spite, that Morin steals the passions in what are wonderfully fiery and contentiously evocative songs. Again stacked to the gills with hooks and raging riffs, the track rampages into the passions with merciless efficiency matching its partner track, and the incitements of their cohorts in crime upon the release, in exhausting punk bred appetites.

Two great bands birthed in different eras but united in sculpting strenuously exciting punk revelry across four outstanding tracks, the split is a mouthwatering stomp confirming the lingering adversarial might of Anti Nowhere League and announcing an emerging force in The Damn Garrison; another slice of evidence that world punk is possibly heading to another major heyday.
