It is fair to say that British rock band Whitecliff is gaining a reputation as rich and inescapable as their drama soaked sound has proven to be, and it is safe to say that it will only increase with the release of new single Five Minutes. The two song offering is a captivating example of the band’s indie/melodic rock imagination with even bolder exploration coming in the atmospherically thick ’Till The End which accompanies the lead track. Released via 25 Hour Convenience Store, the label of The Libertines’ Gary Powell, the single has all the qualities to spark another successful year for the band to match 2015.

The first band signed to 25 Hour Convenience Store, Whitecliff first lured attention with debut single Everybody Knows, its success backed and pushed last October by the Young Lovers EP. Both releases grabbed ears with their fresh and vibrant sounds, in turn drawing potent media attention and support across terrestrial and internet radio. Live too, the band has grown from strength to strength, supporting The Libertines at one of their sold out Alexandra Palace shows and playing London’s Old Blue Last and the Notting Hill Arts Club amongst highlights so far.

art_RingMasterReviewReuniting on the new single with producer Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Paolo Nutini, Badly Drawn Boy) and for mixing Dan Grech (Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines, Circa Waves), both handling the previous EP too, Whitecliff need mere seconds to grip ears with 5 Minutes. Its initial guitar jangle alone has the imagination engaged whilst the subsequent thick bassline of Paul Bates and the skittish beats of Tom Taylor soon spring hips and head bobbing into action. Vocalist Olli Nagy as potently as ever exudes confidence and charm whilst guitarist Jonny Ball gives a new wave character to his flirtatious dance of pick and imagination on strings.

The track is an addictively infectious and provocatively rousing proposal easily whipping up an eager appetite for its prowess before ’Till The End sees the band slip into atmospheric waters with the resonance of bass colouring the poetic suggestiveness of guitar. As Nagy then lays his beguiling tones on the emotive canvas, a Muse/Coldplay like scent arises in sound and tone though pleasingly Whitecliff hone it into something individual to them. Almost prowling ears with its slow gait, the track is a fascinating look at another side to the band’s songwriting and invention; a new strain of variety sure to flourish across future releases.

As much as the Young Lovers EP solidly impressed, both 5 Minutes and ’Till The End outshine any previous Whitecliff endeavour. The single is a rousing and transfixing proposal across its two tracks and yes with it as evidence; it might be safe to say that 2016 is going to be another potent year for the band.

False Heads – Steal and Cheat

There was without a doubt a rich twinge of intrigue and anticipation when UK rockers False Heads got in touch about a new single coming out. It was a surge of excitement inspired by memories of the band’s still impressing and thrilling previous pair of EPs and soon fiercely lit again by the actual rousing temptation of Steal and Cheat itself. The single is a thumping stomp of indie rock tenacity amidst grouchy rhythms and punk seeded invention; a track which whips up ears and enthused involvement as easily as it awakens a greedy appetite for more.

artwork _RingMaster Review     East London bred False Heads made its first steps in the opening month of 2014 and quickly began enticing attention and whipping up a loyal and quickly increasing following. Around the summer of that first year, the trio released the Tunnel Vision EP, a rousing quartet of tracks more than doing its bit to lure further and greater focus the way of the band. It also provided a strong base from which the band could expand and explore its songwriting and sound, and that they had by the time its successor, the Wear and Tear EP, had leapt into ears this past April. Whereas the first encounter was a grunge hued affair, its successor revealed a dirtier and heavier rock tempest to its enterprise and invention. Steal And Cheat shows another strong twist in sound from those before it whilst carrying the increasingly distinctive False Heads character and voice.

Steal and Cheat is quickly into its punk ‘n’ roll canter, the guitars and rhythms colluding in a boisterous canter as the trio of Luke Griffiths, Jake Elliott, and Barney Nash get to work on the imagination with theirs. This time around, the threesome weaves a more restrained and minimalistic proposal of, as suggested earlier, indie and punk enterprise bound in a wind of virulent energy and vocal revelry. The bass is a hefty lure, its throaty swing and presence a cantankerous incitement alongside the sonic web of guitar and the invitingly anthemic vocal delivery. With the drums leading the tempting, it is fair to say that everything about the song is an incitement of catchiness though, and increasingly irresistible over its length and every play.

Like a fusion of Houdini, The Vibrators, and Libertines, whose Gary Powell releases the single on his 25 Hour Convenience Store label, Steal And Cheat is instinctive manna for the ears and easily the finest track from False Heads yet.

There has been a flowing amount of praise and expectations of big things ahead for Whitecliff since the release of their first single Everybody Knows a year ago, and the Liverpool based band can expect plenty more thanks to their excellent debut EP Young Lovers. The first band signed to 25 Hour Convenience Store, the label of Gary Powell from The Libertines, Whitecliff have crafted and delivered a new exploit to which acclaim is set to be a given. Three tracks of virulent and inventive indie pop rock, the Young Lovers EP is simply a tonic for the ears and imagination.

Consisting of vocalist Olli Nagy, guitarist Jonny Ball, bassist Paul Bates, and drummer Tom Taylor, Whitecliff recorded the Young Lovers EP with producer Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Paolo Nutini, Badly Drawn Boy), its mixing taken care of by Dan Grech (Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines, Circa Waves), both also scheduled to work with the band on their first album scheduled for recording next spring. The latest release opens with its title track, and an instant blaze of warm melodies and enticing hooks tempered perfectly by a moodier bassline. The voice of Nagy is just as swiftly enticing, his tones gentle yet forceful in their expression and power to match the potent rhythmic jabs and sonic seducing masterfully and creatively at play across the song.

It is a rousing rock pop incitement to start the EP but straight away eclipsed by The Talk. From its opening tease of guitar and accompanying groove, the song is a virulent stroll which just gets more flirtatious and compelling with each vocal harmony around the potency of Nagy and every catchy twist slipping easily into ears with lingering effect. There is a feel of Black to the song and the overall songwriting of Whitecliff, in the blend of emotive passages and inescapable melodically honed hooks which just light up ears and appetite with increasing effect over every listen.

Final song Say What You Want is the same, but individual in character with its emotive croon through crystalline melodies in a creative romance of the imagination. On first listen the previous two songs outshine the third but time and plays has seen it bloom into an irresistible serenade to rival all whilst revealing more of the depth and substance to the Whitecliff sound.

As we predicted the quartet will be no strangers to acclaim over the next weeks and months but already there is the thought that we have barely tapped into their potential, even with the strength of Young Lovers so exciting times for them and us.

The Jacques – Pretty DJ EP

Like a hybrid infestation spawned from a mix of Babyshambles, Arctic Monkeys, and The Sugarcubes, The Jacques in one scintillating swoop has announced themselves as one of the UK’s most exciting newcomers. That potent introduction comes in the sensational shape of the Pretty DJ EP, a four track stomp of Britpop and pop punk infused with garage rock devilry, which from first to last breath inflames the imagination and incites the body.

Formed only in January of this year and consisting of two sets of brothers aged 16 to 21, The Jacques inspired by the sounds they were raised upon which included the likes of The Strokes, The Ramones, The Jam, The Lemonheads, and Elvis Costello, swiftly made their mark on the live scene. In a few brief months the Bristol hailing quartet of vocalist/guitarist Bonnie Jacques, guitarist Jake Edwards, bassist/vocalist Oli Edwards, and drummer Elliot O’Brien found themselves playing numerous festivals across the summer including Guilfest and at Hyde Park where they supported The Libertines and caught the attention of their drummer Gary Powell, the co-founder of 25 Hour Convenience Store, who signed them on the spot to the label which now uncages the band’s first irresistible offering.

Recorded at Rockfield Studios with Dan Swift, Pretty DJ opens with its title track and instantly ignites the imagination and appetite with an initial jangle of spicy guitar. With rhythms soon in tow, the song relaxes into a warm yet unpredictable stroll littered with quirky hooks, a rhythmic shuffle, and a richly persuasive bassline. It is potent bait especially when the distinct and unbroken vocals of Bonnie flirt with ears, his tones refreshingly unique and individually expressive even at a young age. The song proceeds to weave its salacious sonic curves and healthy rhythmic persuasion with raw and compelling seduction, every syllable and note brought with a dose of eclectic enterprise. The following Foreign Films has a more relaxed gait than the great agitated endeavour of its predecessor, but is no less virulent bait with its sultry melodies and a great vocal duelling between Bonnie and Oli. It is hard to look further than The Libertines as a spicy influence here, though equally there as whiffs of bands like Supergrass and Pulp at play too. The song also carries garage rock tenacity to its sonic and lively cosmopolitan temptation as it reveals a little more of the rich potential and imagination of the young band.

Scum In A Bottle also visits that garage rock breeding as well as a punk causticity which adds further tasty shades of endeavour to the release. Guitars spark and flame with raw charm whilst again the vocals tantalise with their seamless union and magnetic uniqueness. Littered with mouth-watering craft and creative revelry from the guitars and a pungent baiting from the intrepid rhythms, the track steals its own thick wedge of the rich praise building up inside waiting to shower the release, a portion matched by that garnered by the closing Weekends.

The final track swiftly has its temptation ingrained through an opening bass lure. Always a sucker for throaty enticing like this, the track had us gripped from its first second and only proceeded to increase its hold with tangy grooves and similarly tasty hooks across bracing swipes of sonic causticity. As with all the tracks, it is impossible for feet and vocal chords not to join its call, with pleasure in close quarters to their eagerness.

It is fair to say that The Jacques wear their influences on their sleeve but only as homage to those inspirations and as an invigorating hue to their own invention. The Pretty DJ EP is easily one of the highlights of the year and easy reasoning as to why Mr Powell leapt upon them within a breath of discovering their existence.
