Hibernation Masturbation: The Video

km-vid_RingMasterReview

As the world and its ‘masters’ increasingly seduce and trap its inmates in their own design, the new single from Scottish indie musician/songwriter/producer Kevin Mcgowan is a timely statement and wake-up call with a striking video to reinforce its attention grabbing presence.

Hibernation Masturbation was written seven years prior to its new release and back then it reflected a growing virus within a populace increasingly disconnected from the world and its furtive and often more openly selfish vices. Fair to say the track’s observation is even more relevant to the now and the apathetic blindness to the controlling addiction shaped and driven by technology and media.

Talking about the song recently, Mcgowan said,” The song is basically saying how we are all in a state of hibernation and are unaware of what is going on in the real world around us. We get all our information from a screen, be it TV, mobile phones, computers or mobile tablets, and it has become a problem to decipher fact from fiction.

We are all caught up in the subterfuge in various ways, even reading this and watching the video part of being connected to “some kind of self-absorbed internet addiction”; Mcgowan adding; “As a society we have lost our way and exist in our own little bubbles where we can’t tell the real person from their social media profile. We are an idea of our dream selves rather than simply existing, images dictate our own person, creating unattainable needs, desires and aspirations.

km2_RingMasterReviewThe song’s video and its surreal atmosphere is an echo of those thoughts; its intimate and occasionally claustrophobic insight reflecting the bewitching fantasy and the ease in slipping into its fake but easy to devour stealing of choice and honest observation.

Even loneliness is nurtured by the reliance on thought dictating and enslaving technology and its wares, the video again with its distant but potent Alice In Wonderland like surrealism a direct poke which makes you think and assess as the enthralling song itself captures a share of the imagination.

With deceptive self-reliance on this escape leading to being wrapped up in one’s own world similarly courted by the enticing imagery of Hibernation Masturbation, an eye luring landscape interrupted by great shots of Mcgowan and his guitar craft, the video and indeed song enlightens and transfixes while almost being a paradox in that captivation with its theme.

The video is also a wealth of fun which should not be skipped by, with the power of a great song as its soundscape, Hibernation Masturbation is a spark for a grinning but thoughtful imagination to fall in to.

Elements – Make It Out Alive

Elements Promo Photo_RingMasterReview

As part of the exciting 2015 released Where We Once Begun EP, the track Make It Out Alive was an offering from UK alternative rockers Elements which took longer to spark the senses than many of its companions but alone left expectations of major things from the band. Fair to say it has also proven to be a track which has only grown in thoughts and enjoyment since that first outing, blossoming over persistent listens and now makes for a striking new video single for the Southampton hailing quintet.

Elements Cover Artwork_RingMasterReviewFormed towards the end of 2013, Elements have proceeding to forge a strong live reputation taking in shows with the likes of Bad Rabbits, The Afterparty, DEAD!, Ashes To Angels, The Hype Theory, and Public Service Broadcasting plus tours with They Say Fall, Elessar, As December Falls, and You Know The Drill along the way. The band’s aforementioned second EP, Where We Once Begun sparked eager attention and praise from Powerplay Magazine and Big Cheese among many, with the single Shaman from the Phil Gornell produced encounter leading the way. Continuing to make their name on the live circuit since, Elements now uncages Make It Out Alive on its own to stir up further attention.

The track opens on an alluring guitar jangle and the swiftly impressing voice of Graham Rogers, both quickly joined by a more maudlin bassline amid a sonic shimmer. The band’s rhythmic muscle is soon giving further depth and intensity to the song, the hefty swings of drummer Ash Martin uniting with the darker tones of Max Bakker’s bass as guitarists Ollie Butler and Robin Small cast a web of melodic imagination and dexterity. Captivating with increasing energy, as the backing vocal prowess of Bakker and Butler adds another further impressing texture to the adventurous and cleverly layered encounter, Make It Out Alive grabs ears and imagination alike.

As suggested the song is a grower; quickly pleasing on first listen and growing into a beaut of a proposition over time ensuring anticipation for Elements’ next step takes on certain eagerness.

Tijuana Death Shot – Generation Y

TDS_RingMasterReview

Formed last year, there is not a lot of info to share about UK rockers Tijuana Death Shot but on the evidence of their first demo and now new video/single Generation Y, the Manchester trio is heading the right way to ensure the British rock scene is well and broadly aware of them.

We mentioned that Tijuana Death Shot emerged in 2015, though their bio also suggests the band stepped into the light a year earlier, formed by lead vocalist/bassist Jo Quincy and drummer Tom Harris. With guitarist/vocalist James Binnie completing the line-up, the trio were soon creating raw and contagious heavy rock roars cast from a pool of blues and punk rock alongside glam and a more varied ferocity of sound. A three track demo last year awoke a wider expanse of attention, including ours, with the ear grabbing proposals of Disco Killer, This is the Rainbow Blackout, and Smoke & Liquor, whilst live, the band hit a hungry stride across 2015 continuing into this, adding the sharing of stages with a host of emerging and more established bands, including recently Novacrow, Stone Angels, Keto, Dischord, and The Stupids.

Now it is Generation Y stirring up a new tide of eager ears and support, primarily through a great video bringing the song’s salacious qualities to visual light in the Quincy and Sarah Brady directed film.

Stabbing beats and guitar make first contact, they triggering a slim but catchy stroll as the distinctive tones of Quincy entice within the web of Binnie’s grooves. A more forceful edge is carried by Harris’ anthemic swings, inciting a bigger roar from all in the chorus which is given extra punk ‘n’ roll ferocity by the enjoyable confrontational surrounding shouts of Binnie before the track bounces across its range of energies and sonic enterprise.

As shown on their previous demo, Tijuana Death Shot have a great range of unpredictable and imaginative, often off-kilter, twists to their songs; here the listener subsequently facing a rhythmic shuffle wrapped in blues flames or a sultry croon of melodic rock seduction within what is overall a rousing canter. Every element of the song also carries a mischievous devilment which will see Tijuana Death Shot, with their creative boldness, going a long way in making a potent impact on the diversity of British rock ‘n’ roll.

The Generation Y video can be seen @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbpNktZ_uXA or https://ringmasterreviewintroduces.wordpress.com/video-selector/ with the song a teaser to a new EP to be released later this year.

Dead Winter – My Only Home

Dead Winter_RingMasterReview

The early weeks of 2014, saw UK post hardcore band Dead Winter make a rather potent introduction to themselves with debut EP Erasing Glaciers. It was a magnetic six track fury of melodic metal and hardcore ferocity soaked with open potential which had already aroused attention with its first outing a few months earlier. Its re-release four years ago though, sparked a more national awareness which the band fed with their impressive live presence. The past couple of years or so have seen the band seemingly quiet. Things were happening though with ideas and directions breeding line-up changes as the band headed into their next steps now marked by new single My Only Home.

Formed in 2011, the Blackpool hailing band soon lured loyal support and ears with their sound and in turn the successful Romesh Dodangoda (Funeral for A Friend, Twin Atlantic) produced Erasing Glaciers. Weaving inspirations from bands such as Bury Tomorrow, Bring Me The Horizon, and A Day To Remember into their sound, Dead Winter and EP were soon drawing acclaim from the likes of Rock Sound, Powerplay, and Big Cheese Magazine. That regrouping and defining of direction and intent followed but now, and ahead of their first album also called My Only Home, set for release this summer, Dead Winter ‘return’ with a bang in the shape of its title track and an equally gripping video.

With Dodangoda at the helm of album and single again, My Only Home swiftly descends on ears with rapier like rhythms and badgering riffs which soon reveal their own predacious intent and snarl. There is a great metalcore edge to the trespass but a hue soon matched by the melodic enterprise and warmth increasingly aflame in the song. In the first minute alone, the band shows themselves to have tapped into a new contagious and virulent quality in their music without defusing the emotive intensity and fire that marked out their earlier exploits.

As pop punk in many ways as it is melodic metal and post hardcore crafted, the song continues to stir up appetite and pleasure, It provides a compelling and at times almost hostile anthemic proposal further shaped by the guitar craft of Jamie Townsend and Adam Roberts whilst driven by Danny Dawkins’s addictive beats and led by Ant Jones’ outstanding clean and melodic tones. There is a real maturity to the song which hopefully is a big teaser to the heart of the album to come, and a bold adventure which simply whips up attention.

My Only Home, single, video, and album looks like the moment when Dead Winter reassert themselves as one of Britain’s most exciting and seriously promising propositions.

The single, My Only Home is out April 15th. Check out the video on our Video Selector page.

South Wales five-some Between Waves exploded on the scene in 2013 after frustration with the lack of diversity in the current UK metal scene. Between Waves unleash their debut EP ‘Paper Chain’ featuring five killer cuts.
