Though no doubt the band has been busy beavering away sharing their mighty roar of sound, it seems to have been a quiet time attention wise around UK post-hardcore quartet Cold Summer since the release of their impressive self-titled debut album of 2013. There will be no escaping their presence now though with the release of their fiercely rousing new video/single A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire. A hint to the band’s upcoming new album Fight To Survive, the track recalls all the reasons the first album, and indeed earlier EP Wake, grabbed our ears whilst alone positioning the band upon a richer and loftier plateau of sound and invention.

Formed late 2011, the Leeds hailing band quickly began luring ears their way with two track acoustic EP, Transitions and the aforementioned Wake in the January and May of 2012 respectively. Offering a post hardcore sound which was eager to embrace melodic imagination to its aggressive snarl, the band also swiftly showed the DIY ethic which continues today. A leap in adventure fuelled their first album a year later whilst live the band again under their own steam booked a tour in support of it and a subsequent UK with He Is Legend in 2014. Over the years they have only increased their reputation as a band and live proposition with shows alongside the likes of Funeral For A Friend, Polar, Self Defense Family, Lemuria, Milk Teeth, Brawlers, Grieved, and Employed To Serve. Now to whet the appetite for their impending release, the band has uncaged their new single, a track which suggest that Cold Summer is poised to really stir up the European rock and post hardcore scene.

Cold Summer - A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire_RingMaster ReviewA Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire instantly consumes ears in a spicy sonic enticement punctuated by the roving beats of drummer Justin Eastwood. The imagination is as swiftly enthralled, especially as the fine voice of Dan Feast entangles itself in the fascinating drama and contagious enterprise quickly flooding the track. Raw vocals squalls break out throughout to enjoyably contrast and challenge the blazing infectiousness seducing the emotions, they backed by the increasingly predacious hues cast by the bass of Chris Hepworth and the grouchy torrent of riffs springing from the strings of guitarist Chris Harrison from within his otherwise virulent and catchy fire of melodic imagination.

It is a superb maelstrom of imagination and thick enticement, a declaration of an already impressive band coming of age in songwriting, sound, and craft. Thoughts now are that 2016 is going to be a massive year for Cold Summer if Fight To Survive can match and build upon A Time Imagination Forgot To Inspire.

Rhyn – Absence EP

With an emotive potency to match a rich tapestry of sound, the Absence EP from British alternative rock quartet Rhyn, is an encounter which simply makes ears stand up and pay attention. That is merely on the first play, subsequent listens revealing new depths and imagination which ensures it becomes an increasingly impressive proposal. It starts with a bang, mellows out into a less forceful but certainly engaging seduction before offering a song which simply ingrains itself in thoughts and emotions. Absence is a release which warrants persistent attention offering accumulating rewards in return.

Formed in 2010, Rhyn hails from Buckinghamshire and initially emerged as the trio of lead vocalist/pianist Chris Black, guitarist/vocalist Guy Johnston, and bassist Dan Marr. After the release of their first demo, the band expanded to four, going through many drummers until finding in 2012 the right one to stabilise the line-up in Rhys Coombs. Video/single Finite Bodies sparked an increase of attention with its release in 2014, the band feverishly backing it live across London before last year heading into the studio with producer Jason Wilson (You Me At Six, Fightstar, We Are The Ocean) to record the Absence EP. Luring comparisons in different ways to bands such as Biffy Clyro, Muse, and Nirvana, the foursome show with their latest encounter that their sound has its own individual character too, one unafraid to roar or sombrely explore emotive reflections.

Instantly a wall of eager riffs and punchy rhythms descend on ears, stirring up an appetite which is only increased by the great vocal drama and expression of Black as well as the unpredictable nature of the music around him. It is easy to understand the Muse references as an imposing rhythmic shuffle colludes with a web of guitar courted by captivating bass predation. Managing to be aggressive and experimental in a single moment, a raw seducing aligned to boisterous rock ‘n’ roll in another, and that is just a couple of aspects of the gripping and inventive landscape of the song, it has the imagination enthralled and ears fascinated from start to finish; it the kind of majestic anthem which bands are marked by.

The following Fall Away is equally energetic but with a mellower climate to its emerging croon. The keys of Black lay an emotive hand on ears as rhythms again find a skittish quality to their bait, whilst vocals once more impressively bring the heart of the song out, Johnston as potent as Black. Such the potency of its predecessor, the song was bound to slip a touch for personal tastes yet its melodic elegance and sonic craft leaves only a rich enjoyment which is echoed by Finite Bodies straight after. Keys lay a classically coloured coaxing before ears from its first breath, guitar and vocals adding their emotional hues into the embrace swiftly after. There is a fire to the song even then though which simmers and bursts into bolder life as it broadens its almost volatile nature and boldness.

Victory reinforces the satisfaction gained so far into its almost prowling incitement of ears, providing another surge of sonic theatre and emotive angst in thick flames of sound. It too is seamless in its merging of calmer explorations and feisty eruptions, spawning a catchiness which proves to be a constant in the band’s songs and has the listener as fully involved as the creativity breeding each encounter within Absence.

A slow burner that only becomes more persistent with every listen; it is unavoidably over shadowed by the outstanding might of The Only Place. The best track on the release, its opens with a croon of celestial keys and harmonic anguish which again draws swift thoughts of Muse. A rhythmically sparked energy slowly brews from that first breath too, erupting from a sombre sigh into a contagion of hooks and a melodic roar driven by the rich tones of Black. Imagining Faith No More doing a Bond theme is a hint to the scintillating chorus and thick weave of textures at play on ears and imagination. The likes of Porcupine Tree and The Palms equally can be suggested as a clue to the superb arousal of the senses, but again what emerges is something simply and masterfully Rhyn.

Concluded by the pleasing acoustic serenade of Believe In Ghosts with Black simply magnetic, the Absence EP is the declaration of a band ready to climb up into richer spotlights of attention. From its first moment to last, the release compels attention giving full enjoyment in return, with two particular moments which as good as leave ears awe struck.

Martyr De Mona – Siege Mentality

Eager to keep the momentum going of the past couple of years, especially since the release of their acclaimed second album Impera, UK band Martyr De Mona are poised to release new video single Siege Mentality. Taken from the band’s highly successful release, which itself built upon the band’s well-received and eagerly devoured self-titled debut album of 2011; the single is a roar of intent built upon another magnetic fusion of rock and metal from the Stourbridge hailing quartet.

Martyr De Mona Cover Artwork_RingMaster ReviewSince forming in 2010, Martyr De Mona has drawn full praise and an ever increasing horde of fans with their dramatic weave of sound. They have shared stages with the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Black Sabbath, Avenged Sevenfold, Slash, Black Stone Cherry, Skillet, and Alter Bridge, won a Best British Band of the Year award, lit up Bloodstock, and had numerous tracks added to the rotation of national UK and US radio stations and shows. Fair to say that the Romesh Dodangoda (Motorhead, Funeral For A Friend) produced Impera has made the biggest impact on the music scene for the band; one powerfully backed up by its clutch of singles which now includes the rousing Siege Mentality.

Opening with hefty grooves and just as commanding rhythms, the song fires up ears and appetite within seconds with the vocals of guitarist Louis Hale standing powerfully in the midst. From there, the riffs and grooves from he and fellow guitarist Joshua Jones only increase in virulence, aligning with a melodic prowess from them which equally is no lightweight in persuasion either, especially when colouring a calmer passage within the weave of alternative metal and boisterous, grunge lined rock ‘n’ roll. With the scything swings of drummer Ashley Leatherland a more volatile support, the bass of Josh Wooldridge adds a darker temperament and shadowing to the emotive heart of the song, that melancholic hue a potent wash in the keys lit close of the song.

Technically and emotionally, the song is masterful but equally it provides an anthemic persuasion which Martyr De Mona has proven to be so adept at nurturing across their music to date. It looks like being another busy and successful year for the band in 2016, especially if Siege Mentality has its way.

Better Than Never – Homemade Hero

Of any genre, trying to stand out from the crowd in pop punk seems to be one of the hardest feats. Trying to breed something dramatically unique in sound is something which many a great band have struggled to master. Some bands though, inspire the belief that even if their music is not majorly distinct initially, they have the potential and imagination to breach that particular plateau. Listening to the debut EP from British sextet Better Than Never that promise is certainly an open possibility. Embracing other flavours in its feisty pop punk sound, Homemade Hero offers four fresh and rousing songs that hint at something individual in the making.

Oxford bred; Better Than Never emerged in 2013 and quickly set about honing their sound and craft whilst growing into a vibrant proposition on the local live scene. Arriving at the line-up of vocalist James Harris, bassist Jake Aitman, drummer Kane McIntosh, and the three pronged guitar attack of Max Peniket, Jim Allsop, and Will Keating, who also adds backing vocals to the mix, Better Than Never entered The Ranch Production House in Southampton last year to record their first release.

BTN Homemade Hero Artwork_RingMaster ReviewWhat emerged was Homemade Hero; a tenacious quartet of songs soaked in infectious sound and swiftly grabbing attention. It makes a reserved yet firmly enticing start with Heads Shoulders Knees Bones, a song which itself makes a restrained entrance but soon erupts into a boisterous gait though the reins stay on a touch. The potent mix of Harris and Keating’s vocals soon have a say though and lead an eager canter of riffs and melodic hooks to liven up song and listener further. It is a potent if understated and over comfortable beginning, in comparison of the songs to come, to the release but one which nevertheless leaves ears keen and satisfied and the imagination hooked.

It is a success which Back Of The Line Kid seizes with a more dynamic and resourceful character. Straight away the vocals have richer expression as an alternative /indie rock essence flavours the far more unpredictable and fiery enterprise blossoming within the track. Bands like The Jacques and Asylums spring to thoughts as the track shows inventive adventure with the anthemic power of its punk side adding a Taking Back Sunday air to the excellent proposition and pinnacle of the EP.

The following Panama, which features Andrew Soares and Matt Poulton, swings and bellows with vibrant energy and fiery attitude next. The vocal blend across band and song alone is a pungent lure and more than matched by the infectious urgency and aggressive ferocity that ebbs and flows across its creative borders. Like a bridge between the characters of the first pair of songs, it leaves enamoured ears behind for the closing creative web of Dead Weight to entangle and pleasure. Again a broader flavouring is woven into the anthemic prowess of the encounter, where for the fourth time the trio of guitars create something which employs all their individual enterprise without becoming too over involved or imposing on the flowing virulence of the song.

That craft and the EP itself, is another the sign of a band with the potential to make a potent mark on the UK rock scene, especially as the undercurrent of real individuality in the release and Better Than Never’s imagination blossoms ahead.

Universal Thee – All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace is a flirtation which, whilst seducing ears with its pop charm, has the body bouncing and worming around like a slinky. The second album from Scottish alternative popsters Universal Thee brings a smile to the spirit and infectious revelry to the day and whereas their critically acclaimed debut album had ears and voices seriously enticed its potential has simply been blossomed to new refreshing heights in its successor.

Formed in 2010 as a trio with “a faulty Macbook for a drummer”, Edinburgh hailing Universal Thee first took their live steps two years later with an actual drummer. It was a show which had a low-key attendance to say the least but within two years the band was sparking really sparking eager attention, with first album Back to Earth at the forefront of the new thrust in their emergence. Since then their stature has only ascended, shows supporting the likes of Ded Rabbit and an appearance on the pyramid stage at the Kelburn Garden Party potent successes enhancing further their live reputation. Such the magnetic and contagious prowess of All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, 2016 is looking like being another successful time, possibly the moment when the band’s individual sound and presence is grabbed by new and broader spotlights.

Led by the united vocal enticement of husband and wife, James and Lisa Russell, the Universal Thee has drawn references to the likes of Ash, Pixies, Weezer, and Queens of the Stone Age; they amongst many inspirations to the band as a whole and individually. There is also, by coincidence one suspects, an eighties new wave/indie pop scent to their music which reminds of bands like The Chefs, Girls At Our Best, and maybe to a lesser extent The Passions and The Chesterfields. As shown straight away with opener Why, they are all just hues to something distinct to Universal Thee.

art_RingMaster ReviewThe first song swiftly jangles in ears with alluring elegance as the beats of drummer Matt Grieve provide a feistier touch. The song soon strolls along with a fuzzy air to the melodies of guitarists Robin Spivey and James Russell whilst the bass of Andrew Perrie brings a delicious almost groaning temper to the radiance around it. The blend of James and Lisa Russell is another key element in its persuasion, their union carrying a great essence of discord which just seals the deal for ears.

Unashamedly catchy, the great start provided by the first song is continued and surpassed a little by the second. Keep Falling adds a grungy texture to its enticement whilst the bass courts a post punk appeal within a quickly captivating Weezer-esque saunter. Its hooks are as keen and inescapable as its melodic romancing and boisterous energy, a creative weave more than matched by the band’s brilliant latest single Speaker. The mellow but lively vocals from both the Russells, leads a swinging almost mischievous tempting that instantly seduces ears and feet. That earlier mentioned eighties new wave pop colouring is a rich essence to songwriting which also openly draws on the influence of Frank Black, creating a proposition easy to suspect that the Pixies man would be proud to claim as his own.

Xang is a mellower but still energetic proposal next, its shadow lined air and character a slightly melancholic and evocative caress framed by more forceful rhythms whilst Lost at Sea glides through ears with a heavier and grittier breath to its punk infused pop. Both songs keep an already happy appetite fulfilled if without, and maybe expectantly, matching their glorious predecessors, a success definitely achieved by the outstanding Hey. With tenaciously anthemic rhythms and a fiery glaze to its pop ‘n’ roll, the song is certain single material with all the addictive hooks and qualities needed. Quaint and ballsy simultaneously, the track has the body leaping to its compelling creative throes before Hamlet 3 hits the same sweet spot with its own unique Teenage Fanclub does pop punk like canter. The song simply epitomises the growth in the band’s craft and sound without any lessening of their invasive pop ingenuity and it is impossible not to be fully involved in voice and hips with the increasingly rousing encounter.

A calmer climate washes over the senses as Sail Away floats into view, though rhythmically it offers great agitated bait around which vocals and melodies provide a familiar yet indefinable lure. A romancing which breeds more volatile moments within its persistent smooch, the enthralling hug makes way for more galvanic pop ‘n’ roll in the irresistible shape of Hounds, it in turn leaving ears to the pop fascination of closing track Light On, two tracks ensuring album and emotions are left on the same high they started with through song one.

Universal Thee have the great knack of creating something you feel you already know but then you only come across exciting surprise after surprise whilst being infested with pop music to get greedy over. All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace is the sign of a band ready to step into the intensive recognition of national awareness and more; a success hard to see evading the quintet for much longer.

Guitar Virtuoso Rene Benton Releases Brand New Album

US Guitarist Rene Benton To Release “Xpressions Too!!! (Short Storeez)” On Feb 29th

Fresh off the back of a stunning appearance at NAMM, American guitar wizard Rene Benton is set to release his latest album “Xpressions Too!!! (Short Storeez) on Feb 29th!

Inspired by a number of personal tragedies and triumphs; US guitar virtuoso Rene’ Benton put blood, sweat and fears into his latest work, the thrilling “Xpressions Too!!! – Short Storeez”, and it very much shows!

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Rene’ decided to dedicate his energy towards music following a stint in the Marines. He quickly began touring extensively throughout the United States and across the globe, in the process producing an astounding resume. Scoring gigs alongside luminaries like Chubby Checker, Gigi Hamilton, Tuhran Terrell (Anita Baker), drummer Jerome “Stixx” Davis (Tony Rich), actor/ singer Hunter Gerard and chart topping star Louie Louie and many others.

Rene’ was also involved with the modern musical Dreamscape, created and performed by Steve Reed, percussionist for fusion jazz legends – The Rippingtons. He’s also recorded with Grammy award winning artist Sleepy Brown, who wrote Outkast’s hit “I Like The Way U Move” and has chalked up multiple performances alongside artists like Grammy award winning bassist Mel Brown (Mark Anthony and George Benson), Christian Rapcore/Metal band Junkyard Prophet and a faction of British 70’s outfit The Fortunes, known for their hit “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feelin’ Again”.

Taking time to record his first full-length release, Rene’ employed expertise from bassist Troy Johnson, the dynamic drumming of Todd Roberson; both known for their work with Michael Lee Firkins, former Ratt frontman Stephen Pearcy and their own instrumental powerhouse JRZ System. The result was a full throttle carpet ride sounding like a cross between Stevie Wonder and Tony MacAlpine at times.

For his current project Rene called on more musical friends, such as bassists Philip Bynoe (Steve Vai/Nuno Bettencourt/Mark Boals) and Kelly Conlon (Death/Monstrosity/Azure Emote), drummers Atma Anur (Greg Howe/Cacophony/Vinnie Moore/Jason Becker) & Paul Vowell (Radioactive Chickenheads/Green Jelly) and Funk guitar legend Charlie Singleton(Cameo) and a host of other incredible musicians.

If Rene’s body of work says anything, it’s that “Xpressions Too!!!” is a vastly diverse offering that has to be heard to be believed. Bold, brilliant and full of energy; Rene Benton is a name fans of Progressive guitar work across the world need to get familiar with now!

Quartet Release Angry Robot Music Remix of ‘Trudge’ Following Exclusive Stream Via Regen Magazine!

York/Manchester-based noise-punk band SEEP AWAY have unleashed a remix of their debut single, ‘Trudge’, by US industrial heavyweights Cyanotic as a free download, one day after the track was debuted via Regen Magazine! Cyanotic mastermind Sean Payne had this to say about working on the track: “It’s like grimey UK hardcore on top of digital bangery: angry robot style!”

The collaboration came about following initial interest from SEEP AWAY drummer, Dom Smith: “I’m a massive fan of industrial and alt-electronic music, and the rest of the band are all about finding new ways to develop the sound, so Cyanotic was a natural choice – Sean’s work, and his label Glitch Mode’s output has always been awesome. I’m really proud of this.”
