Nishe – Underlaps EP

Having impressed with the single Lose Control just a few weeks back, UK alternative rockers Nishe now back it up with the equally pleasing Underlaps EP. The single was a tenacious temptation on ears and imagination with the ability to linger in thoughts after its departure. The band’s new offering is all that times four with a quartet of songs which either eclipse, match, or closely back up their acclaimed predecessor, but all leaving pleasure rich and the reputation of Nishe further enhanced.

The London based trio first made their mark with debut EP This is Nishe early 2014, around a year after forming. It swiftly drew praise and attention as well as airplay on local and web radio, the likes of BBC Introducing included in those drawn to the band’s sound on both sides of the Atlantic. Lose Control made an even bigger impact which the threesome of Giovanni Zappa (lead vocals, guitar, electronics), Harold Wilson (bass), and Nicolas Py (drums) look like pushing on again with Underlaps.

Artwork Underlaps (EP)_RingMaster Review   The EP starts with the rousing exploits of Out Of Place, the track a wash of riffs from its first breath and a rolling rhythmic stomp a few moments later. Quickly into a robust stride complete with jangly hooks, a fuzzy atmosphere, and energetic resourcefulness, the song easily incites emotions and appetite with its angular but well-rounded rock ‘n’ roll temptation. A little scuzzy, a touch grungy, and all anthemic prowess, an impressive and dynamic start to Underlaps is made, a success continuing with Minors.

The second song breaks on ears with a bass grumble and a tempestuous air bred by Py’s rhythms and Zappa’s guitar but swiftly relaxes into a ska kissed swagger with mellow and expressive vocals. This comes with an immediate virulence which has hips and the imagination enslaved, its Fall Out Boy meets [Spunge] like adventure irresistible, but just one passage in the imagination driving the song. Blues rock, punk pop, and fiery rock all join the colour and invention shaping the majorly thrilling escapade, the track simply and powerfully another contagion fuelled slice of rock ‘n’ roll from Nishe.

Warm reggae seeded seducing lines the opening of Want It Back next, the song soon boiling up its indie rock invention to similarly potent and enticing effect. It is fair to say that the song does not reach the same heights as its predecessors yet with magnetic invention inspiring its grooves and catchy hooks, the song holds keen ears firm whilst the band’s obvious passion simply translates into the heart and captivating roar of the encounter.

Closing track (All My) Sense Blows is the most ‘reserved’ track on the EP, tempting rather than imposing on attention but with boisterously engaging rhythms, pulsating electronic flirtation, and the ever rich persuasion of the vocals and melodies, it only sparks full enjoyment with its emotive blaze. Revealing more of the depth to the band’s songwriting, the song brings Underlaps to a thoroughly satisfying and eventful close.

This year has been a strong one in the rise of Nishe but 2016 promises to be their most successful yet simply off the back of the excellent Underlaps.

Alpha Shallows – Set the Fires EP

It may only be four songs but the debut release from British indie rock band Alpha Shallows suggests a fruitful union between the band’s sound and the appetites of the adventurous music public is on the cards. To be fair, Set The Fires already establishes that connection with its shadowed wrapped and emotionally powered roars, each song getting under the skin in varying but forceful degrees to tap into the psyche and awaken a lusty appetite for the band’s stirring sound. The EP is beguiling and a thickly enticing introduction to the dark imagination of Alpha Shallows.

The Leeds/Wakefield hailing and early 2014 formed Alpha Shallows is the creation of vocalist Craig Walker, bassist Gary Hargreaves, guitarist Paul Joice, and drummer Ben Hewitt formerly of metallers Boneyard Babies. Their backgrounds bring an array of styles and influences into a sound which itself is a tapestry of textures and colours within melancholic beauty. Since emerging, the band has become a potent attraction on the Yorkshire live scene with tracks being supported by the likes of BBC Introducing in North and West Yorkshire. Set the Fires is the national wake-up call and one hard to imagine going unnoticed.

artwork_RingMaster Review   It opens up with the evocatively gorgeous and emotionally intensive Temper, a track epitomising that ability of the band’s sound to get right under the skin. A lone guitar caresses ears first, its tone immediately melancholy coloured as that tempting continues to beckon ears even as the air around it gets more turbulent. The voice of Walker is a just as swift and strong persuasion, his entrance stirring up a fiery and rousing air wearing the scent of Deftones, Life of Agony, and Damn Vandals to it. In full flow, the track flows through shadowed calm and emotional volatility with ease, the sounds matching the intensity of the song’s lyrical narrative and heart every step of the way. It is simply superb, a mighty start to the release and thrilling first touch of the band’s imagination and craft.

The EP’s title track steps up next to match the triumph of its predecessor, the song an immediately livelier affair showing eager beats and sultry guitar enterprise within its first few breaths. The bass of Hargreaves adds another thick lure as the track explores a Doors/Birthday Party spiced slice of indie rock, though there is much more to the contagion and tenacious swing of the rich incitement on ears and hips. Listener involvement is a quick success too, the chorus alone inescapable bait as the impressive start to the release continues.

Solace steps forward next providing a tantalising smoulder of a croon as gentle and seductive melodies entangle ears and appetite alongside the ever potent and emotively intensive vocals. There is something wonderfully familiar to the track and indeed the whole EP but as yet an essence we have yet to pin down whilst basking in its inviting hue within the equally magnetic invention of Alpha Shallows. The dark serenade continues to mesmerise and seduce, increasingly so with every listen, a success emulated in the closing tempest of Flatline, another merging of elegant almost maudlin tempting with rousing endeavour and energy to enjoyably consume body and emotions.

Whereas the first two songs explode in the imagination and appetite right away, growing more imposing with every listen, the final pair takes their time to induce the same greed for their bewitching majesty but certainly rising to the same heights over numerously rewarding listens. All four songs also reveal the rich craft and adventure of the band’s sound and songwriting whilst suggesting there is still much more to come.

It seems like the end of 2015 is unveiling some of its best introductions and biggest treats with Set the Fires right there on the frontline.

Steel Flowers – Kleptocracy

According to the press release, concept album “Kleptocracy is looking around and suddenly understanding what Orwell meant. Kleptocracy is mind control told by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World. Kleptocracy is the distaste ensuing and the attempt to destroy all, but it is also the final realization, just like an oxymoron, to be who you want to destroy.” What the words omit to mention is that the new album from Italian band Steel Flowers is also one fascinating and increasingly compelling proposition. Sculpted on a fusion of hard rock and alternative metal, to simplify things, the ten track incitement entices the imagination with an unpredictable bedlam of flavours and styles woven into a theatrical canvas. Initially it challenges ears and thoughts with that same off-kilter tapestry but over time builds into a lingering persuasion which draws keen attention time and time again. Kleptocracy will not be for everyone but if the thought of System Of A Down meets Turbonegro meets Dog Fashion Disco appeals then this just might be a thrilling way to end the year on.

Formed in 2002 by vocalist Riz, the Milan band quickly hit the live scene before releasing a series of EPs over time. Line-up changes ensued before Steel Flowers settled down to record and release debut album 12 Tales From The Life Of Mr Someone in 2009. Described as a mix of hard and street rock, its well-received uncaging led to the band appearing at Faenza’s MEI, an event for independent labels that same year. 2011 saw the band begin work on Kleptocracy and the emergence of a new direction and invention in the band’s sound as alternative metal influences, and more, began ripening within their imagination. Fair to say the fiercely diverse album had a troubled creation but finally it gets its unveiling via Red Cat Records to ultimately captivate and impress.

cover_RingMaster Review     It opens with Oxymoron 4991 and an initial tempting of electronic mist conjured by Uzzo punctured by a moment of distorted vocals. There is a portentous edge to that first coaxing, one which ripens as guitars and rhythms bring forth their own dark hues, though within a few more haunting moments a warmer light and energy erupts to change the shade of the song again. The guitars of Alex and Adriano are soon dancing and flirting with ears whilst still providing darker drama to the broadening sonic narrative of the track. Once fully into its infectious stride, attention and appetite are enslaved by the song, thoughts similarly bewitched as it proceeds to slip from spicy grooves and niggly hooks into mellow harmonies and avant-garde twists. The vocals of Riz provide variety to match the sounds too, clean croons and gnarly roars offered in numerous ways and backed well from elsewhere within the band. It is fair to say, as the album, the track took time and a few plays to really click in ears and emotions, but straight away had them fully enticed and wanting to delve deeper into its warped adventure.

The dirtier rock ‘n’ roll of Pauper comes next, the feisty beats of drummer Kiry potent bait alongside the throaty tone of Yano’s bass. The latter soon reveals its swinging moves though, a funk infused revelry flushing through the song with a touch of Red Hot Chili Peppers to its colouring, though the earlier heavier elements still court these tangy exploits. It all helps fuel a quickly contagious proposition with a virulence matched in kind by that bred in the punk ‘n’ roll stomp of its successor I’ll Kick Your Ass. Straight away the song’s tenacious and tempestuous roar teases with a B-52s-esque groove which reappears throughout alongside Sex Pistol like hooks, both inflaming the raw and brawling heart of the excellent track.

Hallways Of Illusions serenades ears with its melodic flames and emotive textures next, it a gentle croon but with a fiery nature as, like all songs, it involves an array of creative spices and evolves with perpetual regularity, though not as dramatically as other proposals within Kleptocracy, such as Break My Blues with its intoxicating sonic liquor around prowling rhythms. Living up to its name in tone, the track is an enticing engagement though also not quite escaping the shadow of others like the following Tired And Bored. A great grizzled bassline sets the song up; a web of voices and guitar spun endeavour then wrapping ears as another funk inspired intent infests the rhythms and the hard/classic rock enterprise of the song. Again it is a track which needs time to blossom in thoughts but only heads to the providing of rich pleasure for the listener to embrace.

Through the psychotic character and vaudevillian heart of the outstanding Ruled By Evil Men and the infectious dystopian predation of Workin’ Monkey, the album hits a new plateau of persuasion, both tracks casting their own unique and engrossing theatres of sound and suggestion with the first of the pair the show stopper on the album.

Variety continues as an electronic enticing welcomes R.I.P. next, that brewing into a seventies seeded progressive metal narrative swinging from big thrills to smaller pleasures but always wrapping ears in thick tempting before making way for closing track Tank Man. The song ends the album on a more classic hard rock offering with a touch of Extreme meets Ugly Kid Joe to it; a last slice of rock ‘n’ roll maybe undulating in its riches but undoubtedly leaving satisfaction strong.

Kleptocracy is not without flaws, at times its invention taking songs away from their best assets, but Steel Flowers has certainly conjured a release that excites with the potential of bigger and bolder things ahead for good measure.

Immension – Love Never Dies

Earlier this year British metallers Immension released their highly anticipated and impressively enjoyable debut album In Vain. It was an encounter wearing the Sheffield band’s influences openly on its sleeve whilst tempting ears with their own specific craft in songwriting and sound. One of the many highlights within the stirringly enjoyable embrace of familiarity and fresh imagination was the track Love Never Dies, a song now having its moment alone in the spotlight as Immension’s new single. It certainly stood out through its dramatic originality and emotive intensity amongst all the other successful persuasions within the album and fair to say it has lost none of its power as it tries to ignite another wealth of attention the way of the band.

Immension Promo Shot_RingMaster ReviewFormed in 2008 by Jake Kearsley (vocals, guitar, bass and piano) and Tim Dolan (lead guitar), Immension have blossomed into a band persistently grabbing attention and praise. Straight away their sound seemed to draw on inspirations ranging from Bullet For My Valentine and Metallica to In Flames and Avenged Sevenfold, a mix stirring up a quickly growing fan base live and through a self-titled EP and subsequently its successor The Enemy Within. 2011 saw the addition of drummer Jonni Sowter to the band’s ranks, a final piece of the puzzle found in many ways leading to the creation and acclaimed release of In Vain a few months back. 2015 has definitely been a strong year for Immension and is set to end on a high for them through Love Never Dies.

An initial and distant sigh of keys leads ears to the emotively charged piano of Kearsley, his fingers painting a melancholic picture as a similarly toned reflection escapes with his impressive voice. It is an alluring start becoming more potent as portentous shadows quickly cloud the song’s atmosphere; that springing punchy rhythms and a throaty lure of bass in tandem to contrast and accentuate the melodic and harmonic beauty also shared. From within that creative merger, a fiery climate brews too, veins of sonic enterprise and emotive drama wrapping the Metallica scented ballad as it arouses and seduces the senses simultaneously.

The song is a blaze of emotional angst and mesmeric beauty within a just as gripping tempestuousness. Certainly its character and body has a strong familiarity to it but not as potent as the creative theatre and anthemic prowess unique to Immension. For newcomers Love Never Dies is the perfect doorway into the band’s impressive qualities and rich potential, for fans it just confirms why they have taken the band to their breast.

Maybe We’re Dead Already – Shrapnel

Scottish rockers Maybe We’re Dead Already have just released their new EP On The Way Down, a six track roar of alternative and hard rock led by lead track Shrapnel. Sent over to us as a teaser and presumably the initial bait/single for the bigger release, the track is a grizzly and grouchy stomp of tenacious rock ‘n’ roll which certainly sparks a want to hear more.

Hailing from Glasgow, Maybe We’re Dead Already emerged in 2013, formed by guitarist Matthew Sharp and bassist Steven Bowie. Quickly they became a gigging whirlwind across Scotland earning potent reputation backed by their self-titled demo EP from which certain songs found strong airplay on the likes of Amazing Radio. Now it is On The Way Down and prime weapon Shrapnel poised to stir up more attention and further afield.

Big boned rhythms and fiery riffs open up the track, no major surprises but plenty of energy and raw tempting charging ears from the off and matched in strength by the vocals of guitarist Paul Morton. Hooks and rhythms swiftly collude to create a web of bait which alone grips the appetite, leaving the imagination to the vocals and the creative flames shooting from the guitars across its bows.

Inspirations for the band come in the shapes of bands like as Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Truck Fighters, Led Zeppelin, and Queens of the Stone Age, and certainly a couple of those are influential hues to the grungy rock ‘n’ roll on offer. Eagerly driven by the formidable swings and tenacity of drummer Cree Hoggan, Shrapnel is a rousing, easy to enjoy persuasion.

We have yet to hear the rest of the EP it comes from but Shrapnel suggests that is also well worth checking out for similarly enjoyable hard-nosed rock ‘n’ roll.

Sittin’ Pretty – Twenty Four Seven / Hopeless Annie

Sittin’ Pretty is an alternative/blues rock band from the North West of England and a proposition, if their new single is a sign of things to come, we are all going to hear a lot more about in coming months and years. There is booziness to the band’s sound, an intoxicating essence which entices and seduces certainly on the evidence of their double A-sided single Twenty Four Seven / Hopeless Annie. The release enthrals from the start, worming it way into the psyche to linger long after its songs have departed. Admittedly its first touch is potent without seemingly lighting a blaze in the passions, yet once it is not there tantalising ears it still haunts the imagination to pleasing effect.

Sittin Pretty artwork_RingMaster ReviewHailing from Manchester and Bolton, Sittin’ Pretty consists of vocalist Conor Wilde, guitarists Lewis Grounds and Cameron Gavin, bassist George Brown, and drummer Sayon Beaufort-Harwood. It is a young quintet blessed with the ability to fuse classic and modern hues into their own adventurously provocative sound. Produced by Steven Wilson Jnr and engineered by Gary Hadfield (The Courteeners, Elbow, The Stereophonics, The Twang, Justin Timberlake), the band’s introduction to the world is a compelling persuasion needing little time to make an impact.

Twenty Four Seven embraces ears with voice and a low key caress of keys initially, the croon of Wilde imposing and inviting bait leading the listener into the quickly broadening landscape and heart of the song. Subsequently ears are entangled in spicy guitar grooves and prowling bass tempting, each a flirty mix of blues/ jazz tenacity around the increasingly potent vocals of Wilde and band. The whole temperature of the song continues to increase with every sweep of guitar and swinging groove, their sonic fire aligned to the emotive flames breaking out as the track heads to a sizzling climax as pungent and individual as its melancholically suggestive start.

Hopeless Annie opens with strokes of fuzz lined guitar, a raw coaxing soon joined by another pulsating bass lure from Brown amidst potent sonic mistiness. The strength of the vocals again demand focus upon entering the sultry yet volatile smooch of bluesy tempting, but quickly sharing the limelight with the craft escaping all members of the band. Though the track is a spark or two less stirring than the roar made by Twenty Four Seven, it equally leaves ears and pleasure full, and an appetite for more, hungrier.

It might be only two songs but already anticipation of bigger and bolder things has been awakened by the single; just up to Sittin’ Pretty to deliver now.
