Stone Cold Dead – Lava Flows

Lava Flows is one of those encounters which grabs rigorously, cuts off all forms of escape and in turn plies you with intoxicating persuasion which leaves you woozy and desperate for more. The heavy weight groove fest is the debut album from Greek metallers Stone Cold Dead, a band entangling the richest essences of groove and heavy metal with those of experimental and alternative rock. The result is a virulent form of predatory rock ‘n’ roll which leaves a thick greed for more as ripe as the outright enjoyment experienced from its thrilling introduction to a band destined to great heights.

Stone Cold Dead is the brainchild of former Rotting Christ and Nightfall guitarist George Bokos, a project which is not so much a solo adventure but one luring the talent of equally experienced and innovative guests. The Athens hailing Stone Cold Dead gave a potent hint of the quickly impressing sound fuelling the album a few short weeks back with the release of the single Hubrism, a teaser which awoke intrigue and anticipation with ease band now proven to be just the one facet of a triumphant beast.

The first inescapable seduction of the album comes through the union of Bokos’ glorious baritone guitar enticement with that of Charis Pazaroulas’ (ex-Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra) irresistible bowed contrabass temptation. Both aspects are a theatre of invention and controlled rabidity, of creative attitude and expression colluding to create bestial stomps of fierce rock ‘n’ roll with an unrelenting appetite to devour and incite ears and imagination. That ingenuity alone makes Lava Flows a must investigation but add the majestic and fearsome rhythmic bait bullying and igniting the senses throughout , and you have a proposition which is pure metal alchemy. Split into three sections; Stone, Cold, and Dead, which “unfolds along the Cosmic Tree, which connects three different realities”, Bokos has given the three tracks in each part to a trio of exceptional drummers to drive, twist, and elevate the nature and personality of each movement within the album. Yannis Stavropoulos takes the first section, to be followed by Dimitrios (Vorskaath) Dorian, the multi-instrumentalist behind Zemial, and Nile drummer George Kollias respectively. It is an aspect to the release that just adds further formidable drama to the provocative journey of the album, a potency which makes more of a thrilling impact than was definitely expected.

cover_RingMaster Review     The album opens with Climbing The Cave and straight away it is prowling ears with sonic craft as a rhythmic rumble builds into an anthemic addiction. As becomes the diverse mouth-watering norm across the release, riffs nag and gnaw on the senses as quickly enslaving vocals and the jungle of beats from Stavropoulos descend to seduce and ravage the body. Like a mix of Bloodsimple, Killing Joke, and Black Tusk, the track swings its bait whilst drilling deeper in to the psyche with every torrent of rabid riffs and web of insatiable grooving. It is probably right to say our passions were hooked from this point, a submission ensured by the contrabass seducing of Pazaroulas but only confirmed time and time again across Lava Flows starting with Cyclone Speaking.

Instantly the second song is more bestial in the tone of guitar and bass, and strolling with an antagonistic gait soon drawing in melodically enflamed roars of sound and voice. Rhythmically things are another maze to explore and be willingly trapped by as the melodic tenacity of Bokos flirts and explores new designs and instincts within the bruising rock ‘n’ roll climate. As with its predecessor, swift submission and a lusty reaction from body and thoughts are given, a success found again by the album’s title track. Lava Flows, as its title suggests, smoulders and crawls from its first breath but around an already keen burst of rhythms which provide the spark for a subsequent sludge bred swagger as volatile in energy and hunger as it is immersive in weight and ambience. Pazaroulas again bewitches with his bow on strings whilst Bokos and Stavropoulos entrance as they turn limbs and neck muscles into their puppets.

An apt colder steely hue flows through the album’s Cold section, Death Drive preying on ears with increasing intensity and energy as a punk ‘n’ roll attitude and irritability runs through the song’s pulsating veins. The craft of Dorian has a more rock ‘n’ roll energy and swing to its attack which is translated in the sound around it, that in turn creating another strain of alternative and groove metal united in stoner-esque toxicity to grip ears.

Both The Black Snake and Hubrism transfix with their individual invention and natures, the first emerging on a tribalistic, mystique clad trespass breeding a caustically flamed swing of riffs and incendiary grooves. The perpetual niggling quality of both continues to make the juiciest irresistible bait matched by vocals, rhythms, and that contrabass and bass ingenuity, manna throughout the album. Here it creates an emprise of colourful melodic and sonic mystique within a net of addictive creative voracity whilst its successor is a more sinister and disentangled weave of voices and atmospheric intimidation crowded by a great irritant of waspish grooves and robustly dynamic rhythms. Once more songwriting and sound infests and twists the listener this way and that with startling invention and imagination, and though many elements are familiar there is no doubting they are employed and evolved into something rabidly fresh and unique to Stone Cold Dead.

The exceptional Deconstructing The Architect is the first offering in the Dead segment of the adventure, Kollias sculpting a wonderfully intrusive and anthemically invigorating wall of rhythms as the guitars open up their own net of inimitable and irrepressible imagination and craft. The body becoming a puppet to the strings of band and album is nothing new at this point but certainly strung out and sent into their biggest frenzy yet as the song builds into its Torche meets Mastodon meets Trepalium emprise of sound and temptation.

A shamanic scent opens up with the entrance of Umbilical Cord next, the guitar again spinning a sultry and exotic coaxing before the track erupts into its muscularly predacious and erosive glory, which itself is never absent of unpredictable and smouldering flavours from distant shoes and cultures. The track, as all, simply engrosses and thrills, a tempting emulated in the closing extensive exploration of And The Tree Becomes A Sphere, a travelogue of sound and inspiring hues in its own right that has ears and thoughts as enslaved as the emotions amidst a massive greed for more.

Lava Flows is real heavy groove woven magnificence for the ears, and even if others find themselves to be not quite as lustful in reactions as we found ourselves to be, Stone Cold Dead are still a big reward all should give themselves a chance of getting excited over.

Saint[the]Sinner – Masquerades EP

Starting with the band name, Saint[the]Sinner weaves a thick web of temptation and drama that simply devours ears and imagination from within new EP Masquerades. The UK sextet are beginning to be renowned for casting tapestries woven with theatrical post-hardcore, melodic metal, and contagious pop rock, to simplify their sound. Their reputation in turn has grown by the year since forming in 2011 but after Masquerades it is easy to say that Saint[the]Sinner have stepped onto a new plateau and are ready to embrace the richest spotlights.

The past two to three years has seen the band share stages with the likes of Crossfaith, Bullet for My Valentine, and A Day To Remember amongst great many as well as play the Warped Tour in 2013 and Takedown a year later. 2015 has been no less busy for the band, culminating in the release of Masquerades, which Saint[the]Sinner recorded with and was produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Bullet for My Valentine, All Time Low, Bring Me The Horizon). The six track adventure of sound is pure magnetism and though arguably its contents bask more openly in inspirations than the band’s previous songs, it has only resulted in the most unique and exciting offering from the band yet.

Rich in the scent of bands such as My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, Avenged Sevenfold, and Fall Out Boy, Masquerades is a perpetual torrent of creative adventure and imagination soaked in instinctive drama, as shown by the opener Theatre Of Broken Dreams. From its initial music box like melody the song holds court, swiftly throwing open the door to muscular rhythms and ravenous riffs as a two prong vocal attack spreads the emerging narrative. The raw squalls of Lukey Juan are uncompromising but superbly tempered and accentuated by the excellent clean tones of James Laughton, his impressive presence similarly illuminated by the enjoyably rabid delivery of Juan. With that first starting touch of symphonically laced keys still flirting within the intensive blanket of invention and sound, the track relentlessly twists and turns, its volatility seeded in a maze of styles and compelling imagination. Those early references are a vocal colour to the song, but as suggested, clear hues in something original and creatively vaudevillian to Saint[the]Sinner.

The outstanding start is followed by First Blood, another ferocious mesh of rich flavours and varied styles honed into something distinct to the band. Keys appeal early and again get smothered in the thick tide of sound and atmosphere but still continue to lurk as the guitars of Pash Stratton and Billy Muircroft evolve through seduction and predation, matching the vocals simultaneously. Whiffs of Muse and Bullet for My Valentine also drift across the tempestuous wave of multi-coloured sound, as the track creates an enthralling invitation impossible to refuse.

The next up Left For Dead revels in more pop rock scenery for its vibrant if still intimidating start, virulence instantly flowing through the magnetic proposal, especially in its Fall Out Boy like infestation of a chorus. The bass of Tom Bigg is a growl of shadows whilst drummer James Booth scythes through the air with instinctive intensity to match the contrasting grouchiness of Juan’s vocals. Along its thrilling length, the keys spread symphonic evocation whilst the guitars write their own dramatic persuasion within another striking proposition within Masquerades.

She’s a Vampire is the same, every element seeming to have its own story going on within the total play of the track, but all uniting with fluid and resourceful craft for one riveting croon come storm of emotion and sonic adventure. Across the EP, Laughton increasingly impresses with his expressive and potent tones, they the more dominant presence here, but that is something easy to say for all members as each song stirs up ears and appetite with zeal and a prowess of dramatic invention.

The EP comes to an end through the irritably imposing Set It Off and finally the alluring labyrinth of Asylum. Both tracks show another shade of the sound and songwriting of Saint[the]Sinner, the first of the pair entangling metalcore seeded savagery into its blossoming landscape of post hardcore and melodic metal theatre. Its successor also opens, as the first song on the EP, with a haunting melody, quickly casting a cinematic theatre of hooks and enterprise which is soon caught in the claws of rapacious metal and vocal ire, that in turn revolving within a melody honed calm and symphonic mysteriousness; all elements in league with each other from thereon in to masterful and gripping success.

It is a mouth-watering end to an equally mighty release. If the likes of the aforementioned My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, and Avenged Sevenfold do not do it for you than maybe Saint[the]Sinner might be a proposal that lacks something but as said, the band takes all flavours and turn them into their own continuing to grow and impress body of invention so for all they are worthy of a listen. The bottom-line is that this is a band with the potential to go really places, and soon so do you want to miss out?

Dorje – Catalyst

Catalyst is the perfect name for the new EP from UK rockers Dorje, its sound and songs the sure spark to major attention and a greedy appetite in a great many for the band’s inventively fiery sound. It is an offering lying somewhere sound wise between Soundgarden, Audio Slave, Alter Bridge, and Tool but with a freshness and invention which across its five tracks shows exactly why there is a rich buzz around the quartet.

Technically impressive and captivating with a sound built on rousing grooves and inflame melodic imagination, Dorje imaginatively draw on varied flavours from the likes of blues, jazz, metal, and a diverse mix of muscular rock ‘n’ roll. What emerges is a rich and enjoyable persuasion that is unafraid to merge recognisable hues and flavours into the band’s own skilful textures and magnetically resourceful enterprise. Catalyst roars with this impassioned recipe, and though it may not blow ears and the passions away, it certainly leaves a hungry appetite and intrigue for more in its wake.

DoejeCover-Bright_RingMaster Review   Written is first up upon the band’s second EP and straight away a guitar stirs up attention with its raw and slightly grizzled coaxing. In a swift breath or two, the dark throaty bass lures cast by Dave Hollingworth join the expanding flames springing from the of guitars of Rabea Massaad and Rob Chapman, with the latter’s vocals make an equally strong impression as they join the captivating sinew driven mix. The beats of Ben Minal cage it all in a restrained but potent frame as Hollingworth’s craft continues to be a dark magnet in a song blossoming an off-kilter and delicious passage of imagination soaked avant-garde adventure. It is a moment reinforcing early recognition of the great unpredictability which also lurks within the band’s potent tempting, a twist turning a strong track into something special especially as it continues to add riveting spice to the remainder of the impressive song.

The potent start continues with the EP’s title track, the song as its predecessor, making a controlled and alluring start but soon, once it has found its creative feet, brewing into and expanding into an imagination fuelled exploration. Admittedly the track never ventures as boldly as the opener but entangling familiar and fresh enterprise in a technically sculpted web of enticement only leaves ears and pleasure full; a hungry satisfaction wanting more and duly fed by Aeromancy. Encircling the senses in another maze of technical prowess and heavy rock predation as emotive as it is rapacious, the song blazes away as it takes the listener through its multitude of layers and robustly dynamic textures.

A more relaxed embrace and enticement comes with the excellent All next, the band creating an enthralling croon as provocative as it is progressively charming and holding a touch of UAE band Absolace and Porcupine Tree to its enticing flavouring. As expected, the song carries an attitude to its breath and predatory air to its invention which invigorates the warmer side of its infectious character, both sides closely colluding as the track works its way to a tempestuously compelling and exhilarating climax.

Closing track White Dove is a more formula heavy rock bait of sound which personally did not whip up the same excitement as those before it yet leaves only fill satisfaction behind with its old school meets grunge feel. It is an eager slice of the kind of rock ‘n roll which never fails to go down well though, an inflamed storm ensuring Catalyst leaves a potent last impression.

Dorje are cultivating something very flavoursome and indeed striking as the Catalyst EP powerfully reveals but equally there is open potential of broader and bolder things to come which means current rich enjoyment is leading to keen anticipation for what comes next, a reaction as ripe as the pleasure found in this new roar.
