The Sons of Bido Lito – Avalanche

Some songs just frisk ears with their creative tenacity; finger the imagination and fondle the psyche with a tempting which almost seems like it has been engineered just to fit personal tastes. One such irresistible enticement for us is Avalanche, the new thrill laden single from UK garage/psych rockers The Sons of Bido Lito. The two track encounter is pure addiction on 7” vinyl courtesy of Dirty Water Records; a pair of songs which from different directions unite to create aural manna for swerving bodies and lusty thoughts.

Taking its name from the Los Angeles hangout of the Sunderland band’s musical heroes such as The Doors, Love, and Captain Beefheart, the seeds of The Sons Of Bido Lito began in the summer of 2011. Inspired by the sixties garage rock sound and equally its psychedelic seduction, the quintet began weaving those essences into their own shadow rich imagination and dark toned invention. The years since emerging have seen the band support the likes of Jacco Gardner and James Skelly & the Intenders, share stages with bands such as Primal Scream, and the release of their well-received debut EP Bido Music in the April of 2013. The following Gamma Ray! single again awoke new and greater amounts of eager appetites as well as finding itself being used by Fifa for their YouTube goal of the month video, ensuring the song there alone was heard over one million times, whilst the track Coco Bongo was taken up by Heineken for their Champions league coverage with Ruud Gullit bringing another 2,000,000 YouTube hits in touch with the band. Now it is the turn of the brilliant Avalanche to stir up more attention, a success quickly assumed as a given once the title song sets to work on ears and imagination.

Cover_RingMaster Review     For us it took barely a handful of seconds to be enthralled to Avalanche, the song winding a juicy flirtatious guitar groove around ears, it almost instantly joined by the bulging muscle of commanding and enticing beats. Another breath sees further guitar shimmering seducing the senses and a rumbling dark bassline whipping up the emotions. Fair to say already every aspect of the song comes with an addictive virulence which only grows and intensifies over time. The garage rock stomping spawned by riffs and rhythms alone just dangles impossible not to take a bite at bait in the lure of the song, that incessant tempting leading to a host of keen and imposingly gripping hooks, juicy grooves, and the great effect wrapped vocals of guitarist Phill Houghton.

Surf rock hues soak the melodic enterprise whilst bass and beats taunt with a tone and infectiousness lying somewhere between The Cramps and Bo Diddley. Overall the song, drawing as much on the flavourings of artists like The Sonics and Dave Edmunds as it does those like Reverend Horton Heat and Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers, finds a unique spot in a bordering on psychotic landscape which is quite simply sixties spawned rock ‘n’ roll alchemy perfect for any era.

The accompanying 12 Commandments emerges with a character more coloured by the psychedelic influences of the band. From within a wash of waves on an imagination assuming midnight lit shore, another heavily alluring bassline from Lem grips attention. A matching rhythmic coaxing from drummer Dodsy quickly joins the affair and a sultry embrace of guitar from Paddy Pickering too, once more a surf rock seducing working away through his and the string exploits of Phill Houghton whose vocals sway in ears like a magnetic flame, the keys and percussive enticing of Chris Houghton completing the palette of sonic colour in the psych rock temptation. The collusion of all hues maybe inevitably suggests The Doors but equally the likes of The Byrds and fellow UK band Kobadelta come to mind across the encounter too.

Though the lead track steals the show, 12 Commandments is sheer bewitchment and together both tracks make Avalanche one majestic virus of sound and reveal The Sons of Bido Lito as one musical infestation everyone needs in their life.

Nine Miles South – Self Titled EP

It is proving to be a rather exciting year for UK rockers Nine Miles South which is coming to a thrilling head with the release of their self-titled debut EP and a couple of big shows, all sure to confirm that their groove loaded southern rock ‘n’ roll is ready to awaken the broadest attention. Their three track release is an invigorating and exciting slab of resourcefully varied hard rock; heavy and contagious, creatively aggressive and addictive, it has body and appetite on red alert by track one, seduced by the third and though it weaves plenty of familiar sounds and textures into its persuasion, the EP just hits the sweet spot that lies within all rock fans.

Nine Miles South was founded by Danish bred Seb Mikkelsen, the band forming after the vocalist/guitarist had moved to the UK from his homeland. Based in Guildford and with a line-up completed by guitarist Jon Antony, bassist Andy Sleigh, and drummer David Wilson, Nine Miles South took little time in awakening strong support and awareness through their tenacious live presence. Shows with bands such as Kobra And The Lotus as well as their own gigs and strong festival appearances have marked the band out leading to good radio play. After a couple of recently highly successful London shows and ahead of the band playing Hard Rock Hell in Wales on November 13th with amongst many, Black Label Society, UFO, Helloween, Pat Travers, and Gun, and also supporting Skinny Molly at the North Devon Arena in Ilfracombe on November 18th, Nine Miles South release their first EP, an easy to suspect spark to increasing and eager attention.

NMS FRONT COVER EPP_RingMaster Review   Produced by Samuel Burden, the EP opens with The Reckoning, a mighty anthem for ears and emotions. A slightly reserved beginning cups ears first, a sultry climate of guitar and melody backed by the vocal twang of Mikkelsen swift enticement which only grows more gripping as thick fisted rhythms join the increasing energy and roar of the song. It is still not in top gear but casting an inescapable anthem for body and voice which only blossoms into virulence as grooves twist and entwine the psyche and hooks lurk in very corner and evolution of the outstanding song. As suggested the overall sound has a recognisable air but it only adds to the drama and potency of the tempting, especially which sixth gear is finally unleashed for a boisterous finale.

The excellent start is backed well by Leave Me Be, another making its entrance on a gentle melody from the guitar whilst quietly brewing a more intensive character which erupts soon after. A more emotively coloured and controlled stroll, the bluesy track spins a weave of melodic and vocal expression wrapped in low key but pungent grooves, these further punctured by firm rhythms. The bass of Sleigh has a great growl whilst the guitars of Antony and Mikkelsen create a croon of enterprise to match the resourceful vocal tones of the latter, backed well by Antony and Sleigh. Without quite matching the heights and irresistibility of its predecessor, the song has ears and attention riveted before Fingernails brings the release to a rousing close.

The third track has the imagination drifting off to dusty, country blues rock lands within seconds, grooves and riffs instantly sculpting a southern seeded canvas to lose oneself in, before shadowed rhythms lined with spiky beats and grooved invention build tantalising scenery. Imagine a mix of Bad Company, Down, and The Bastard Sons and you get a whiff of the excellent climax to one thickly enjoyable encounter.

The last few months has seen a new wind of attention and buzz around Nine Miles South which can only get bolder and louder with the release of their first EP. It is rock ‘n’ roll with a twang and very easy to suggest you go get some.

Wilhelm Tell Me – Growing Younger

Like a spring sun whose potency creeps on you until flesh begins sizzle, Growing Younger the new single from Wilhelm Tell Me warms up from an appealing first impression to become an offering which refuses to go away. With melodies that linger, hooks that grip, and vocals which simply tantalise, the single is a refreshing breeze on the senses from a band perpetually growing.

cover_RingMaster Review     The indie pop driven band hails from Hamburg and Copenhagen with a line-up consisting of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Henning Sommer, bassist/backing vocalist Matthias Kranz, and drummer Paul Kaiser. 2011 saw the release of debut album Excuse My French and since then a clutch of singles and EPs before last year was given the A Short Story for the Road EP to enthuse over. Recorded with and produced by The Mars Volta keyboardist Lars Stalfors, the encounter awoke a new strength of attention and acclaim for the band which Growing Younger, itself taken from the EP, continues. The single has already teased and lured previously but given a broader re-release this September, it is a captivating welcoming fro newcomers to the vibrant sound of Wilhelm Tell Me.

Keys and guitar immediately invite ears and imagination, their melodic caressing leading into a slightly leaner but no less magnetic passage of pulsating bass and vibrant vocals, both laying in an evocative mist of keys spawned warmth. There is an on-going smile to the touch and melodic breath of the song which slips into a more eager grin as the guitars play with engaging enterprise and the song’s chorus dances around recruiting the listener’s involvement with increasing potency.

The song continues to please and ignite participation with a dancey catchiness which is Paul Haig like at times. Fair to say the song does not blow a major fuse in the passions, but certainly it is far more impacting than first imagined as its gentle hooks and mesmeric melodic charm just keeps repeating on thoughts and hunger. In many ways its return has come a few weeks too late as it is a proposition simply calling out to grace sultry summer nights.
