Formed in 2012, UK rockers EofE has been stirring up attention with a handful of potent releases though their new single Stars In Hollywood is the first to cross our radar. It is destined not to be the last though as the track alone proves enough to understand and reinforce the growing buzz around the Black Country quintet. The single is a rigorously captivating slice of muscular rock ‘n’ roll with nothing lightweight about its enterprise and everything captivating in its presence.

Stars In Hollywood has been announced as the band’s first official single but follows a host of digital tracks released on the likes of iTunes across 2014. Each of Dirty Diana, Lust, Kiss Me Like You Mean It, and Piece of You awoke increasing attention, which now after hindsight listens is easy to understand, but it was the acclaimed Bridges last November which breached greater media and fan spotlights. Its success and keen radio play was backed by an 11-date headline tour across the UK. Now EofE follow it up with Stars In Hollywood, its unveiling coming straight after the band completes another extensive tour supporting UK metallers Glamour Of The Kill. 2015 is sizing up to be another potent year for the quintet of Tom Harris, Dan Bremner, Luke Bradley, Nicky Waters, and Reece Luke, with Stars In Hollywood the next striking temptation.

The single rides in on a sonic lure and jabbing beats, building up its walls before it all crashes down into a melodically fuelled yet pungently weighty proposal. The dark throated bassline is an immediate attraction, its heavy growl never far from the surface of the song and sparking great satisfaction. Swiftly in full energetic stroll, the song’s great vocals align to just as expressive guitar enterprise. Stars In Hollywood is also unafraid at times to relax for just a voice and bass seduction and other moments the same of vocals and guitar, but ultimately t storms senses and the imagination with a rousing stride of sonic tenacity and melodic invention. The anthemic urgency and prowess of the song is just as impacting and inescapable, easily pushing EofE onto that continual to watch list.

Stars In Hollywood is a treat, a single which whether an introduction to the band or confirmation for fans of their impressing growth, sets down a new marker and peak for the band’s creativity and sound to date. We will be joining a great many keenly anticipating their next proposition from hereon in.

The Phantoms – Wasting Time

Enveloped in an eager buzz of attention in their Scottish homeland, West Lothian quartet The Phantoms make a potent play for ears and imaginations further afield with new single Wasting Time. It is a song which does not make a startling impression or impact initially but sneaks into the psyche whilst pleasing ears, finding a potent nestling place to nudge thoughts and imagination time and time again.

Formed in May 2012, The Phantoms were soon stirring up a local following with a sound bred on the inspirations of bands such as Kasabian, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Arctic Monkeys and their energetic live presence. Their debut EP This Is How It Should Be worked away on the Scottish media and fans whilst the following single Revolution took the band to a broader British spotlight, in no small ways helped by successful tour and support slot with Catfish and the Bottlemen and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Now the Broxburn band is aiming for greater success with Wasting Time, and it is hard to expect anything less than continued success upon its anticipated release.Picture 108

The guitars of Colin Simpson and Colin McKillop bring the song into view, their melodic enticing an instant magnet which increases its pull once the dark sultry tones cast Peter Stewart’s bass emerge in hand with the firmly delivered beats of drummer Blair Cullen. It is not an explosive entrance but a seriously compelling one which only intensifies once bass and drums spin their dark web around the strong vocals of Simpson. Electronic flirtation also sizzles and teases within the song, at times a corrosive whisper and in other moments a vivacious breath from them attaching to the melodic tenacity of McKillop. The track continues to hint that it might erupt into a massive anthem or contagion but never goes that extra step, retaining an infectious yet reserved energy which leaves ears and thoughts satisfied if hopeful for that extra missing spark.

Nevertheless the track is a captivating proposition alerting the country and beyond to another emerging and potentially mighty Scottish proposal. There is certainly no element of wasting time with The Phantoms new single.

The Riptide Movement – All Works Out

It is an understatement to say that last year was a big year for Irish rock band The Riptide Movement in their homeland. It was a massive attention grabbing time which saw the release of debut album Getting Through, a gold-selling release which provided a tremendous cap to a series of top 10 singles and sold-out headline tours. 2014 basically thrust the Lucan, Dublin quartet, on the back of their previous increasingly potent presence, into a major spotlight in Ireland, one the band is now looking to emulate in the UK and further afield with their first British single All Works Out. Taken from Getting Through, which will also be getting its own British unveiling later in the year, the new single grips ears and imagination with a rousing three and a half minutes of undemanding but infectiously captivating rock ‘n’ roll. A mix of melodic rock with folkish essences and just a hint of Irish Americana, the song is a highly enjoyable introduction to The Riptide Movement.

As suggested it has been an increasingly potent time for the band since forming in 2006 and especially heady over the past couple of years. Recent successes has seen the band play across numerous cities from Dublin through to Delhi, support The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 2013, and lure hordes of new appetites at Glastonbury 2014 with their acclaimed performance. Getting Through was not slow in luring success with its Irish release, the album being included on the Meteor Choice Music Prize Shortlist for Irish Album of the Year. The Riptide Movement is certainly 7e05df8f-175d-436c-9766-2324249034bca band on the march with Britain next in line as they reinforce their successful festival appearances with All Works Out and subsequently the album, which was recorded with Ted Hutt, one of the founder members of Flogging Molly, this summer.

     All Works Out makes a low key entrance, a simple countrified twang of guitar making the first beckoning. It is swiftly joined by the punchy beats of drummer Gar Byrne and a resourceful bassline from Ger McGarry though, creative flames constantly lit as the guitars of J.P.R Dalton and Mal Tuohy expand their initial lure. It is still a minimalistic and appetising coaxing, the song never exploring anything beyond a feisty liveliness, yet all the time building an anthemic climate to further captivate ears and attention. Vocals across the band unite in a seriously infectious lure for the chorus whilst the bass slips into heaver and darker tones after time to contrast the fiery melodies which similarly emerge in the growing roar of a song. A little like Doves meets fellow Dubliners K.N.O.T.S., the track bounds through ears with a contagious revelry, a vibrant enterprise which maybe is not testing originality but definitely employs familiar spices in an invigorating and a thickly appealing way to incite the imagination and appetite.

All Works Out gives us a healthy hint at the reasons for Ireland taking The Riptide Movement to their hearts, something The UK will be copying if not now indeed come the summer we suspect. With this release, it is hard to imagine that anticipation for Getting Through will anything but hungrily eager.

The Skints – FM

There are numerous and varying essences which make a great record, elements which create an escape or certainly a potent diversion from everyday issues and drudgery. There are some which go even further, capturing the imagination as forcibly as ears and emotions whilst taking the listener into a landscape that is familiar in some and many ways to their own personal life’s scenery. These are the standout moments in music and FM is without doubt one of those. The third album from UK reggae/dub quartet The Skints, the release is a fascinating and seriously thrilling adventure, an encounter from the band drawing on their own personal pleasures growing up and in turn connecting with the listener’s. FM is an inescapable thrill fuelled by fun, fierce enterprise, and ridiculously contagious imagination…oh there are some rather bewitching sounds involved too.

Following on from their previous acclaimed albums, Breathe. Build. Believe. and Part & Parcel, of 2009 and 2012 respectively, FM is a tantalising proposition which in some ways can be described as a concept album. The release from the East London quartet of Jon Doyle (bass), Marcia Richards (keys/sax/flute/melodica/vocals), Jamie Kyriakides (drums/vocals), and Josh Waters Rudge (guitar/vocals), takes the listener into the heart of an imaginary London pirate radio station, The Big FM / Frequency Murderation, 103.Skints. Across its length we are entertained by four radio shows with the DJ Mr Versatile Breakfast Show, the alter-ego of Tippa Irie, setting the album’s broadcast off. The release is a tribute to the radio culture the band and indeed we have all loved as music fans, whatever our tastes, an ‘education’ and experience arguably lost in the modern internet age. FM is quite simply spellbinding in premise and invention, the songs finding The Skints at another creative plateau yet unafraid to give a nod to their early inspirations and own rawer sound whilst weaving diverse tapestries from roots reggae, dub, rocksteady, punk, Motown, grime, garage, and soul plus much more.

FM is summer in one excitable embrace and instantly steals ears and passion with This Town which follows the opening Breakfast Show skit. Featuring Tippa Irie and Horseman, the song is an immediate seduction. Vocals caress ears as guitar and pulses stroke with equally engaging intrigue. It is potent bait swiftly given greater colour by the irresistible tones of Marcia Richards. The image001song has attention and appetite instantly in its hands right away as a skittish air only adds to its compelling aural smile. London life has never been so warmly and magnetically shown but it is just the start. Both guests add their distinctive and captivating vocal adventures to the invigorating stroll, it all leading to a croon of a chorus which surely no one can resist. The track is spellbinding leaving a huge grin on heart and face and pleasure ready for what is to follow.

In The Night steps in next, its melodies and harmonies gliding over the senses, serenading ears with aural poetry. Elegant and reflective, the song also shows a darker yet unthreatening side, Horseman again adding his rich deep tones as energies brew heavier attitude around him. Imagine By The Rivers meets The Clash and you get a sense of the great contrasts colluding in beauty, though admittedly not the real uniqueness of the offering. Its mesmeric elegance is followed by Come To You, a summery waltz in ears with Richards as vocally enchanting as the pop bred melodies and steamy prods of keys and guitar. You can easily visualise or imagine a video of the song such its cinematic air, for us the singer spreading her melodic romance from the open carriage of a London park situated steam train, its wheels dancing around a track in the sultry heat of summer.

The excellent My War brings a darker edge to the release, the song a cover of the Black Flag track. It is still a fascinating melodically enhanced invitation but has a snarl to its voice and attitude lined swing that breeds an additional intriguing edge to the provocative narrative and shadows. The track is the end of the first show, Dancehall Dilemmas with Dr. Ranking Pegasus (aka. Horseman) opening up the stations next clutch of offerings. Featuring a ‘call from listener Danny’ it evolves into the excellent Friends & Business, another song with an addictive swagger and punchy rhythmic enticing commanding feet and passions with consummate ease. Ska bred with a soulful nature to its heart and vocals, the track also has a mischievous almost vaudeville moment which only adds to the addiction spawned by the slice of rock pop.

Both the feisty sway and swing of Where Did You Go? and the more serious presence of Tazer Beam keeps album and listener aflame with invention and pleasure. The first is yet another call of the summer with intimate melodies and irresistible rhythmic and percussive lures courted by bewitching vocal prowess across the band. As with many songs by The Skints, you feel you know the proposition ahead of ears yet everything about it is fresh and unpredictable, a skill sparking greater lustful reactions. The second of the two songs, explores a darker and grittier premise, looking at gun and associated violence on both sides of street culture. Tippa Irie returns to bring his pungent style to the immersive tones of song and band, contrasts again sublimely crafted in sound and lyrical expression by the band.

After the melodic spell of The Forest For The Trees, sorcery of vocals from across the band kissing ears as words and reggae honed strokes work on the imagination, the Grime Hour With Rivz (aka MC Rival) welcomes Eyes In The Back Of My Head. Also featuring the ‘DJ’, the track almost prowls ears, the hip hop incitement of Rival an alluring and compelling protagonist against the similarly imposing sounds surrounding his spits. Tempering it though, keys and vocals from the band bring their own smouldering seduction; whilst seemingly inspired by the tense streets being explored, the guitar reveals noir lit drama in its creative designs. The track gets under the skin, constantly evoking thoughts and emotions before Got No Say provides its own distinctive and individual flirtation of eagerly simmering keys, siren-esque melodies, and another thrilling and adventurous vocal union. In many ways the song might be the most pop of them all on FM, though as ever it never allows itself to settle into one singular premise of sound.

DJ Mr. Versatile Evening Session is the final show of the broadcast and gives us the mouth-watering beauty of Tomorrow. The song epitomises everything impressive about The Skints. Songwriting alone as enchanting and immersive as the melodies and imagination fuelling every slice of ingenuity held within FM. We have obviously repeatedly mentioned the thrilling melodies and harmonies which ignite songs, but have to also point out the dark throbbing lines cast by Doyle’s bass, the instrument and its dramatic strings perpetually casting additional theatre within the tracks.

It is a masterful end to a stunning release. The band’s previous albums were the mark of a band persistently finding new heights and depths in its sound and invention. Now FM is yet another landmark for not only The Skints but indeed reggae seeded ingenuity as a whole.

Dora Nadine – Summer EP

Pop punk unafraid to add a raw snarl every now and then, the sound of British rockers Dora Nadine makes for a friendly and rather appetising encounter, a description which also perfectly fits new EP Summer. Containing a handful of songs which as the EP title are full of infectiousness and warm revelry, the release is a thoroughly engaging and magnetic encounter. The fact that it does not over excite and get the emotions as elevated as it might have, feels like a missed opportunity but when it lures a frequent return to its enjoyable presence it is fair to say that it is doing plenty right.

Dora Nadine hails from Anglesey in North Wales, and since forming within the closing weeks of 2012, has consistently made an increasing impression on the rock scene. Debut EP Welcome To Hollywood in the January of the next year, sparked a potent spotlight towards the band from fans and media alike whilst their emerging live presence only lured further eager attention, especially through shows with the likes of Mallory Knox and Tonight Alive last year. As the new EP dances with ears and imagination it is unsurprising to see that influences to Dora Nadine’s sound include New Found Glory and You Me At Six, yet they only add to the appealing and to be fair diverse colour of the band’s sound. Hooks snare the listener at every turn as melodies entwine ears with energetic revelry, and with muscular rhythms aligning to punk bred riffs, Summer is a sizeable, undemanding enticement for feet and pleasure.

The EPs title track sets the party going, a lone riff swiftly igniting a thrust of rampant beats and sonic enterprise, these swiftly punctuated by infectious hooks and just as catchy melodies and vocal escapades from the band. The main lead of Dewi Thomas makes an instant good impression too; his voice holding a tinge of former Hagfish frontman George Stroud Reagan III to it, and indeed across the EP essences of that band, amongst others, also hint away. There is a heavy tenacious energy and core to the track also which works perfectly with the lighter contagion flirting Dora Nadine 'Summer' EP Artworkwith ears. Imagine CIV around their second album fused with New Found Glory and you get a healthy glimpse of the impressive opener, if not of all of its potency.

The inescapable bounce and infection continues into the following 2 Step, a song similarly sculpted to its predecessor but with even thicker addictive hooks and spicy grooves across an anthemic rumble of rhythms from drummer Karl Hargreaves and bassist Osh Williams. The underlying groan to basslines and the more aggressive scrub of riffs cast by guitarists Tomi Hargreaves and Matthew Newbigging make a great companion and temper to the melodic flames lighting the track, those bred by keys especially tasty as everything from the band combines to enslave body and thoughts.

The beginning to Save Your Breath emerges as one of our favourite moments upon Summer next, its opening melody straight out of The Mighty Lemon Drops songbook. It is a lip licking start to the reflective and lively balladry of the song, an entrance swiftly reinforced by Thomas and the catchiness already laying its hands on ears from voice and rhythms alone. Into its stride the song expands into a more, not exactly predictable, but certainly recognisable premise though it cannot prevent the pop croon from leaving ears fully content and ready for Bow For The Crown which flows right out of it. That continuation means the song again has a similar template to the one before but is soon dousing it with its own melodic wine and rhythmic agitation. It is a mix capturing the imagination but as the last song, surprises are few even if satisfaction is high; that missed opportunity as mentioned at the start applying to this pair of tracks whilst they still make a highly pleasing offering.

Far Too Long bounds in with charm and energy next, at times tempering its initial urgency with a gentle melodic caress though for the main it is a buoyant rock pop romp featuring the outstanding tones of guest vocalist Lily Green alongside Thomas. It is a great union which arguably is not used enough in the outstanding song but a minor quibble soon forgotten as the closing Our Last Scene leaves the EP and listener in strong if again familiar territory. Even with this recognisable breath, the track is a heftily pleasing proposition, raw vocal squalls in the background of swirling melodic adventure and rhythmic confrontation bringing new drama.

There is a hidden track on the release, a version of The Fall which again only has good feelings roaming ears and emotions with its thrilling attributes and appetite for hooks and imposing riffs, not forgetting lofty harmonies. Dora Nadine on the evidence of Summer feels like a band just a few steps away from sparking major spotlights and in creating a release which will seduce all. This EP is a great appetiser in the meantime.
