If Sawsound is a band yet to cross your radar then there is no better time to discover their intriguing and compelling inventive intent and sound than by launching yourself at their latest single Dreamcatcher. The track is a breath-taking blaze of experimentation within an imposing heavy rock frame which captures the imagination from its first breath and leads it on a heady blaze of invigorating and inciting intensive alchemy. Released digitally this past September but with an impending re-release according to close sources in January (with one suspects a physical option), this is a release no one with a passion for bold ingenuity and exhausting imagination would be foolish to ignore.

Formed in 2009, the Leeds quartet brings eclectic influences through its individual members into their ever searching invention. Brothers Simon (guitar/vocals) and Johnny Whitton (drums) infuse a love of heavy hitting sounds from the likes of Mastodon, Tool, and Metallica to the mix whilst Adam Greenhead (bass) offers spicery from his funk/groove style inspired by bands such as Radiohead, Primus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Add the Celtic seduction brought through the violin of Hana Piranha and you have as Dreamcatcher potently proves, a release which tantalises and incites the imagination as well as the passions with voracious charm.

The single in its first bare second is coaxing out eager attention as a singular guitar stroking is joined by a dramatically SawsoundDreamcatcherCoverevocative violin croon, it’s delicious melancholic bait extended into pure addictive temptation by the joining thunderous rhythms and continually swerving and teasing guitar enterprise. The vocals have a northern lilt which adds expression to every syllable whilst the passionate delivery skirted by great band harmonies at times, only coaches thoughts to delve deeper into the narrative and magnetic textures of sound. The track brings a sublime tempest of heavy melodic rock, persuasive folk, and alternative metal, to really simplify all the flavours at work, into an arresting expanse of unpredictable imagination and mouth-watering adventure. As fluid in shifting gait and attack as it is in merging a colour box of styles into its spellbinding sinewed body, the song is a towering suasion of songwriting and craft, as well as spectacular inventiveness.

The release also sees three remixes of the lead song, UK producer DuBoTs creating the Oblivion Mix, the Lucid Dream Mix coming from OnesNzeroS, and Pope offering up the Deadliest Catch Mix. All free pinpoint and focus on individual aspects which paint a new satisfying take on the stunning original with their own adventurous insight though to be honest none come close to the force and potency of the lead track.

Backed by an equally impressive stop-frame animated video created by Michelle Tylicki, a visual artist who Sawsound is helping to raise money for her pledge campaign to enable her to help rejuvenate depleted coral reef that has suffered under man’s impact, Dreamcatcher is an outstanding release from a band which takes creativity and expansive rock to new scintillating plateaus.

Project Silence – One Way To Hell

    Project Silence is a sonic and invasive scourge from Finland which ignited a lasting passion and hunger in us for their presence through the album 424 which unleashed its extreme toxicity last year. The album was brawl of intense promise which shared a brutality and bewitchment that overwhelmed and seduced the passions. The band now return on December Friday 13th with new single One Way To Hell, a two track creative fury which confirms all of the intensive promise and stature of the previous release whilst stretching the band’s imagination and abrasive qualities even further.

Hailing from Kuopio, the band was formed in 2008 as initially a solo project of Delacroix (vocals, programming, keyboards),  who began brewing up a distinct dark aggressive design from ferocious essences bred in the likes of industrial metal, dark electro, trance, aggrotech, and black metal. A demo emerged soon after the project was unveiled followed to relative success by the single Voices the following year. 2012 saw the line-up of Mr. Sanderz (guitar), J (guitar), Silve R (drums), and Sturmpanzerjäger (bass) alongside Delacroix before debut album 424 was uncaged on the world to strong responses from fans backed by equally enthused critical acclaim from within the underground press alongside radio play on shows like The Bone Orchard at Audioburger.com. The experimental muscular confrontation of the new single takes the heights set by the album not maybe to new plateaus but certainly to intriguingly different and just as impressive corrosive adventures.

One Way to Hell emerges from an enveloping sonic mist; one soaked in menace and brewing industrial toxicity speared by one way to hell coverincreasingly intimidating beats and an asylum bred laugh. As soon as it has comfortably coaxed attention and intrigue from its recipient the band expels a squall of heavy duty rhythms and equally muscular riffs stalked magnetically by the shadow dwelling keys and malevolent vocal growls bred in even darker places. The track does not go for the jugular but instead bears its full weight upon the senses to immerse the whole of the listener and thoughts within a bruising and merciless yet seductive pestilence. With a deceptively contagious chorus and a just as virulently tempting swagger to its stride, the song initially does not make the same immediate impression as many tracks on the album did but with startling imagination and twists, like the excellent full stringed almost folky lure crafted by the guitars, the encounter evolves and increases its persuasion through its first and definitely across multiple returns. It is a slow burner in many ways but soon finds the flint to spark an enthusiastically hungry appetite for its bold adventure.

The track is accompanied by Death and Madness, an onslaught which carves a swifter impact on and submission from the passions to reinforce the thrilling potential and striking evolution of sound as presented in One Way To Hell. Production is less precise and clean on the second track which only adds to the throaty lure offered by the bass and mutually predacious guitar riffs punctured by just as threatening rhythms. Coursing with infection dripping grooves and rabid hooks, as well as dangerously alluring melodic seducing from the keys, the track is an epidemic of incendiary pestilence and destructive enterprise woven with threads of wanton beauty and classical elegance. Masterful and creating an even greater creative alchemy than its impressive co-provocateur, the song is a towering predator and excuse for all newcomers to check out the uncompromising might of Project Silence.

IIOIOIOII – Sun

Earlier this year the Rising Sky EP from US industrial/electro project IIOIOIOII set the imagination away on a warm mesmeric flight bred from its expansive atmospheres and spellbinding synth pop seduction. Equally it stirred up anticipation for and high expectations of the impending album from the North Carolina artist. On a day many hide in the shadows from, Friday 13th of this month will see the dawning of said album and an insatiable tantalising of melodic elegance and consumptive aural caresses which confirms and then crafts to greater heights all the promise and assumptions spawned by its predecessor.  Sun is a masterful casting of eighties synth pop and seductive electronic textures which enthral and flirt with ears and emotions from start to finish, a provocateur  who is new to the senses but holds a familiarity which makes easy allegiance to its infection seem like destiny.

IIOIOIOII (pronounced I.O.), is the solo project of Charlotte musician Christopher Gurney who since the release of the Rising Sky EP has come under acclaimed attention from fans and media alike. The quality of the four track release sparked something in people and its chosen genre, its seeds and poetical melodies seemingly cultured from an older era but evolving into a fresh and transfixing presence which adds almost classical warmth to the current climes of synth pop. Released as the EP via Juggernaut Music Group, Sun provides a glowing understanding soundscape and incitement for thoughts and emotions which with nostalgia and invention an equally tempting fuel to its enterprise leaves an already eager appetite for the artist full and still greedy.

Rising Sky is the first caress, senses spotting melodies gently coaxing in attention as a sinister industrial/electro rub shadows IIOIOIOII - Sun - covertheir enticement. It is an instantly engaging encounter which enriches its lure the further into its evocative depths the song moves. As the welcoming yet also slightly dark tones of Gurney call from within the predacious heat, the song arouses thoughts of eighties bands B-Movie and Modern English. It is a mesmeric start which holds an intimidation but it is held in check by the magnetic elegance of the melodies and the persistently infection laced lure of the song.

The impressive start continues with Weapon, again light and shadow entwines in a dramatic melodic embrace. With an enveloping tantalising ambience stalked by sinewy rhythms, the song simultaneously prowls and seduces the senses and imagination, flowing crystalline melodies making spellbinding bait to which defences are immediately attracted, especially as a Visage like electronic narrative coats the delicious enchanting and intrusive toxicity. The song immerses the senses in a provocative bathing, one which is reassuring but also emotionally exploratory; a trait just as ripe within its successor Stardust. Like those before the song has no urgency in making its full intent known, instead slowly dawning in all its aspects and emotional castings. The evocative slow stroll and celestial kisses from within the melodies sparks another delve in to eighties synth pop, the crafting of Paul Haig coming to mind as well as a darker presence which has whispers of Nine Inch Nails to it. Absorbing and virulently infectious within its reserved yet fully flighted soar, the track pulls the passions even deeper in to the riveting narrative of the album.

For Do You Know Gurney uncages a serpentine malevolence to his haunting vocals, a move again opening new shadows and enticements within the album which the following Falling boldly stretches into even darker realms whilst persistently lighting the way with irresistible melodic and electronic weaves. Gurney’s vocals on the second of the two provide an almost venomous breath to temper but also stretch the glassy beauty flowing easily over the ears; a kind of Frank Tovey meets Mr. Kitty persuasion. Though admittedly the pair nor the invasive but beguiling Spotlight which emerges next manage to ascend the heights of the opening trio of songs, all with sumptuous ease increase the bewitchment from and hunger for Sun.

    We’re Still Alive steps forward next with a steely intent and stance to its contagious croon. Like a new sculpting of the haunting invention of Trent Reznor and the chilled imagination of John Foxx, the track is another merciless majestic tempting of the senses and emotions whilst both New Sedations and Echo, the first a feisty discord drenched slice of creative bedlam and the second a ghostly smothering which induces fear and rapture, increase the drama and intrigue of the album. Gurney on the pair again shows with varying success he is unafraid to push his vocals to places they may not be wholly comfortable with but constantly it only adds to the appealing portentous air of songs and release.

After the veering on doomy presence of Goodbye, the album is completed by remixes from Dreams Divide (with Stardust), Revenant Cult (Spotlight), Art Deko (Rising Sky), Garten der Asche ( Spotlight), and Machinista (Stardust), all in their individual ways discovering and extending new aspects and traits to their chosen sources, though truthfully none find the unfussy triumph of the originals. Nevertheless they provide a fine closing stretch for a release which reinforces and forges greater promise within IIOIOIOII; the dangerous beauteous temptation unveiled one rewarding trap to fall for.
