Delicious horrors: an interview with The Monster Ones

From within the heart of the Palma de Mallorca region of Spain there has stirred in the past couple of years, a fresh and exciting storm of graveyard rock n roll. It comes in the thrilling shape of The Monster Ones, a band which collects the essential essences of various styles and flavours to create a fusion which leaves all fans from psychobilly and rockabilly to punk and horror rock, an energised limb casting explosion of energy. The quintet is a force on the rise and one we wanted to know much more about and find what drives their obvious hunger. So we had the band tell us all.

Hi, welcome to The Ringmaster Review and thank you for taking time to talk with us.

Firstly would you please introduce the members of The Monster Ones?

-Cecile The Beast: Lead Vocals

-Maf: Drums and Back Vocals

-Elvis Lugosi: Bass and Back Vocals

When and how did the band come about?

In 2008, Carpi and Cecile started the band, along with Bukake Kid (bass) and the help of some friend drummers; we collaborated with them in the early shows as we still did not have an official drummer in the band.

It was so fun! In just 15 days after getting a place to rehearse, we gave our first concert. We had no idea how to play, but had a great time, and from the beginning we have had the support of our family and friends who have encouraged us to learn and evolve day by day.

Your music is a great hybrid of punk, horror rock, glam, rockabilly and more. How do you describe it when asked?

Good question! hahaha! We used to call it Horror-Glam-Punk-Rock Band.

It’s just what you say … A mixture of many things we love, and we will not spare any of them. Rock ‘n’ Roll is beautiful in all its aspects, and we love to play with them all.

From your varied and flavoursome sound one imagines your influences too are wide. Who are the major ones to Cecile The Beastimpact your sound and invention?

Many, many influences, yes! We are 5 members in the band that have musical tastes in common as: Misfits, Ramones, Cramps … But each of us, individually, brings his/her own influences too.

I am right in thinking the band has evolved from initially playing cover songs to the all original composition making group it is today?

Yes, our first show lasted only 20 minutes, and consisted solely of covers of some of our idols (Misfits, Ramones, Turbonegro, Iggy Pop  …). But immediately after, we started to compose our own songs.

Tell us about the early times of the band and how easy or difficult it was to find a place in Spanish rock music.

Well, from the beginning we have this eagerness and enthusiasm to work; we believe that’s fundamental to make a site in the rock scene anywhere. Stay there, no matter what happens … And the harder it is, the more effort we put.

Is there a vibrant rockabilly/garage/horror rock scene in your homeland?

In our home, Mallorca Island … If you rely only on the local music magazines, the predominance is for Indie Pop

But really, if you visit the rehearsal rooms or go out to see concerts, you can see that there are great bands of Punk Rock, Metal, Rockabilly and Garage.

You released the Transilvania Rock City EP in 2010 and last year the excellent I Wanna Be A Teenage Monster!! EP. How would you say the band has evolved between the two in the aspect of songwriting and the sound itself?

In “Transylvania Rock City”, we recorded with a different formation to the present and served as our first experience in a recording studio.

Now, together with the current members, we feel our sound and compositions much more defined and worked.

In 2012 we decided to start experimenting with home recordings made by Maf (drummer). We recorded our songs in his living room, it was very useful to carefully analyse our music, and in this way we can improve.

From these recordings is where “I Wanna be a Teenage Monster!!” was born. It contains four of the most simple and direct compositions of The Monster Ones, of which we feel very proud.

 How does the songwriting work within the band?

In our band we are five songwriters. We all love to create, and we always do it together in the rehearsal room. It’s fun to see how each of us brings something different than expected, but which engages perfectly with the final composition.

The Monster OnesThe songs are steeped in horror, sci-fi, and comic book imagery and essences. Are these areas the major inspirations for your lyrical imagination or do you take the ‘horror’ of every day as a provocative factor too?

Horror, sci-fi, and comics are the main inspiration. Also very useful are the dreams and nightmares.

Tell us about your live shows, I hear they are an event few forget once tasted 🙂

Thanks, it’s the best we can hear about our shows! 🙂

In our live shows, we forget the boring real world and focus on the fun.

Yes, we like to dress and make-up for every performance … It is a form of expression, and also a way to carry over our audience with us to this imaginary world of horror and Rock ‘n’ Roll. We want them to get into the story and feel part of it.

Tell us about Zombie Walk and Zombie’s Party in Mallorca which I believe you helped found in 2010. Is this now an annual event and what do they comprise of?

Yes, it is an annual event that takes place every summer, thanks to our friend Adrian Garcia, who makes the hardest work of organizing this. Each year come more zombies, surpassing the 400 undead in the 2012 edition. The route of the Zombie Walk ends with a Zombie’s Party, where we give a show, along with other friend bands, varying in each edition.

Soon we’ll begin preparations for the 2013

How do you feel about the internet and its part in the rise and arguably demise of the chance of success for new emerging bands?

It is a very useful tool, both for the bands and for music fans.

Where do you hope to find The Monster Ones in five years?

Evolved, full of good experiences, with several albums behind us, and many others to record. Stay there and keep rocking!

What is next from the band and plans for 2013?

In mid-February we’ll get into the studio to record our first LP.

Of course, we will continue writing new songs, and we fervently wish to tour outside our home.

1. – The entry of V (Monster-Guitar). Great composer, and gives better shape to existing songs adorning them with his riffs, and Maf, (Monster-Drummer), perfectionist to the limit, which always encourages us to improve ourselves.

2. – The entry of Goatboy (bassist during a year in the band in 2011). He provided great ideas and recorded with us on I Wanna be a Teenage Monster.

3.-The entry of Elvis Lugosi (Monster-Bass), now bringing his forceful and elaborate riffs

4.- Our video clip “Teenage Ramone”, by which we were chosen “COOLEST SONG OF THE WEEK” in New York’s Radio Show Little Steven’s Underground Garage. This has made known our music in many more places around the world. Thanks so much, Steve Van Zandt!!!

5. – And at the end of last year was carried out the voting for “THE COOLEST IN THE WORLD 2012”, among the 50 songs of very great bands. We got to the No. 5, we see it as a great achievement and an honor. This has also been a great help to make our music known to the world.

Lightning Swords of Death: Baphometic Chaosium

    Primal and bleak, Baphometic Chaosium the new album from occult black metal band Lightning Swords Of Death, is an unforgiving and unrelenting torrent of evocative and menacing irreverence. It is uncompromising and challenging to the core, a release which will ignite distrust and fear in some and instinctive rapture in others, but for all it will be a lingering, uncomfortable, and unforgettable experience.

Around six years ago the LA band grabbed attention with their debut album The Golden Plague, the release taking the provocative fusion of occult sciences and the exacting sounds of the bands put in motion two years earlier, into an open intrusive reality. The release alongside the devastating live performances of the band demanded and received impressive acclaim and attention with the band surrounding and following the album with stunning displays of insidious performances alongside the likes of Nachtmystium and High On Fire, and as openers on the Danzig Blackest Of The Black Tour. The band gave 2008 their second release in the shape of a split CD with Valdur which though limited to only availability at their live shows drew further unbridled praise. Signing with Metal Blade Records in 2010, the band with new drummer Mike Vega on board, unleashed their second album The Extra Dimensional Wound to again rich responses. A US tour with Kreator and a place on the Evangelia Amerika Tour headlined by Behemoth followed as did being hand -picked to support Immortal during their only Los Angeles appearance and a performance at the 2010 Scion Music Festival.

Now the band has returned as a quintet with lead guitarist Chris Velez joining vocalist Autarch, bassist Menno, guitarist Roskva, and039841515121 Vega, and an album in Baphometic Chaosium which leaves one feeling violated and enriched in equal measure. Described as a ‘devotional work, dedicated to their patron god – A mind altering experience compelled by the embodiment of chaos, death and ecstasy entitled’, the album is a black web of ravenous and spiralling intensity and vicious spiteful hunger.

The title track lays a haunting atmospheric scurry upon the senses before opening up thumping rhythms and grasping guitar caresses. The guttural pit-borne scowls of Autarch express the shadows with malevolence and venom whilst the song expands into a breath sucking weave of raptorial rhythms and oppressive riffs. The bass of Menno is a charnel soaked host of black intensity amongst the merciless riffing and corrosive vocals bringing additional magnetic depth to what is a relatively straight forward gait to the track yet one openly incendiary in inventive intent.

The strong start becomes a furnace of high tempo annihilation as Acid Gate next rampages through the ear to assault and condemn the senses to an exhausting and compelling violation. It holds no inkling of mercy or light, the dense blackened malice of the track an overwhelming seizure of emotions and thoughts. It as do all of the tracks,  erodes and permeates until the listener is infused with and enclosed in the black, light extinguishing intensity.

The swamp of hornet intense vehemence which drives Psychic Waters is a delicious and sensational demonic saturation of the senses whilst R’Lyeh Wuurm is the darkest fury of unforgiving riffs, destructive rhythms, and vocal threatening. It is an outstanding malefaction with a heart blacker than any devouring chasm and the sonic armoury to bring instant submission to its towering primal ravishment but the album reaches its most compelling malignant depths with Epicyclarium. Dispersing a mixed variation to the vocal encroachment let alone the inspired expanse of the music, the track is a sonic incantation for the darkest passions with a snarl and rumble to riffs and energy which awakens essences of early Killing Joke to the black metal satanic distillery. The nasty endeavour is with ease the best track on the album which considering the strength of all shows the height of its sensational confrontation.

Closing with Oaken Chrysalis and another striking and contagious emotional brawl, Lightning Swords of Death has created in Baphometic Chaosium, a release which impacts on all aspects of the body, emotions, and thoughts. Whether the album has enough to make it one which will head thoughts when best of lists are formed come December time will tell but it will certainly be in the considered pile.

Man The Machetes: Idiokrati

Man the Machetes

    A stormy affair which leaves the senses rubbed raw but glowing with pleasure, Idiokrati the debut album from Norwegian hardcore rockers Man The Machetes, is an undeniably formidable and captivating onslaught. Fusing varied essences from rock and metal into their abrasive hardcore confrontation, the Bergen/Oslo based quintet has unleashed an album which is challenging and takes some intensive focus to discover all of its masterful elements but rewards richly for the effort.  The album squalls with sounds drawn from the same caustic wells as a Cancer Bats or Ghost Of A Thousand but throughout sends shards and veins of melodic rock and punk which captures the breath of a Billy Talent or Red Tape. It emerges as a distinct and original sound which sets the band apart from most, and though they brew a similarity of sound and attack across much of the release it has plenty of variation to captivate fully throughout too.

Released through Indie Recordings, Idiokrati is the accumulation of two years of hard work and a likely trigger to widespread recognition beyond their homeland. The band has risen from playing small Norwegian venues to lighting up festivals such as Pstereo and Hove as well as supporting the likes of Gallows and Kvelertak. The five friends who began playing music they loved in an old German bunker, have been on a forceful rise to date with the band travelling to Toronto In August 2012 to work on this their debut with producer Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, Comeback Kid). The album which emerged after four weeks of intensive work is a stirring and impacting bruising which ripples with infectious lures and irresistible melodic teasing. It is an uncompromising abrasion but one which employs skilfully crafted and engaged melodic flames.

From the moment opener Sluk Det Rått barges through the ear with a welcoming groove to the sinewy rhythms and riffs offered MTM-IDIOKRATI-COVER-1400x1400there is an immediate compelling draw to the release. The song is a grazing instigator through the barbed beats of drummer Per Christian Holm and the coarse vocals of Christopher Iversen but tempers their harsh rasping with magnetic melodic flares from the guitar and an imaginative sonic teasing which borders on sirenesque. Leading straight into second track Sjelsvrengt, the song is an impressive start equalled and continued by its successor. Again the melodic sonic magnetism is to the fore in the second track with the guitars of Morten D. Carlsson and Erlend N. Sætren irresistible in their invention and the bass of Erik A. Larsen a beast of muscular yet wanton contagious dance. The scorching presence of the song is less instantaneous than what came before but provokes an emotive response which is just as powerful.

Idiokrati continually does nothing less than impress, the likes of Mageplask with its mesmeric groove, the punk coated Slagen, and the intensive tempest Maktesløse encounters which ignite and energise the passions and primal instincts. The release has a fluid gait with many tracks evolving into the next seamlessly and with sonic skill though it too offers the only real downside to the release, a returning similarity across parts of the album. It is not a major negative but does defuse some of the invention underneath the surface scathing and occasionally make songs merge into one which an arguably over needed focus is required to differentiate.

Other than that the album is a tremendous debut and when tracks like the deliciously intimidating Deltidsidiot with its ‘celtic’ toned groove and the senses sizzling Hjemkomst lay their exhausting presence across the ear the release is exceptional. Man the Machetes offers strong emotions of much more to come too which really inspires Idiokrati to provoke immense anticipation for the band and their releases in the future.
