As enjoyably warm and infectious as the midday sun on your welcoming cheeks, The World Has A Bank Account, the new single from Wons Phreely is a refreshing and invigorating treat which makes it impossible not to want to bask within its glory with an insatiable hunger. A melodic paradise brought with uncluttered imagination, the song leaps upon the senses with a tender charm and eager energy for a quite thrilling, what will be for many, a first introduction to a talented Australian artist.
Wons Phreely is Perth singer songwriter Justin Wonsley Snowball, a man who has already grabbed good attention and acclaim with his Rules Of Nature EP of 2007. From its success the artist seemed to ‘disappear’ from view, Phreely taking time to travel the world. His return has come with a new image, a new sound, and The World Has A Bank Account which is taken from the Tonight EP. Musically he has evolved from a sharp wordsmith with accompanying sounds to a still stirring lyricist who has enveloped insatiable melodies and sweeping musical imagination to his creativity. One can imagine the early songs were lyric first compositions with sounds to line their path but now with the new single alone, one feels like melodies and music seed songs whilst the words still as potent reveal themselves within that established canvas. The new ‘invention’ has led Phreely to interest from and signing with Ivy League Records for the release and one imagines a wider attention once the teasing and energising sounds of the single work their impressive lures on more ears.
Based on an encounter with a girl Phreely met at a Patrick Wolf concert with some of the lyrics direct representation of things she said, The World Has A Bank Account enters on electro kisses before spreading its organic pulse with orchestral whispering caresses. It is an instantly intriguing wink before falling into a confident stroll of well-shaped guitars, pulsating rhythms, and the compelling vocals of Phreely alongside continually enthralling string and piano touches. Everything about the song is contagious, from its cheery swagger through to the persistently prodding gait of the song, with the aurally hooked breath of the sound and exceedingly engaging delivery of Phreely icing on the cake.
The World Has A Bank Account is without doubt one of the best indie pop songs this year if not the world leader. As it thrills the track is a kind of mix between Zebrahead and James Cook, its crunky energy and melodic beauty an enthralling enterprise. Out now it is a song to light up the dark days of winter.
