Interview with Dick Venom of Dick Venom & The Terrortones

If you thought UK psychobilly was on the decline or started and ended with The Meteors and Demented Are Go then you would be very wrong for now we have a new pretender to the throne of  P. Paul Fenech and Sparky in the dark princely shape of Dick Venom. Leading an equally mischievous band of hell’s rejects in The Terrortones they are a fresh, sexy and insatiable addition to the garage/rockabilly/psychobilly freakshows of the UK. We have the pleasure to enter the lair of Mr Venom to find out much more about the unsavoury quartet.

Hello and a big welcome to The RingMaster Review.

Could we start with finding out the history of the man Dick Venom?

Awwww, me? Well I was born in the swamps of the moon’s lagoons and hitched a comet tail to earth. Guess I landed on my ass because my behind which stung like a beehive had been hangin out the back of it for about a month. I dusted myself down, sprayed off a load of space debris and here I am.

When and where did the Terrortones become involved?

They just kinda came outta nowhere. I’d been riding high on jungle janes and ‘gator tails for a while when all of a sudden they hit me. Hell only knows what they were doing in my neck of the woods but damn they sounded good. SugarBeats was pounding on something like a thundercrack jackhammer, Vicky Twist and Wrex St.Clair just seemed to jump out at me with guns and guitars blazin’, they caught me unawares and all the hairs on my unmentionables seemed to jump up to attention.

Your music throws a mix of rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, psychobilly, and garage punk into a swamp of dirty mischief, what are the strongest influences to your sound musically and personally?

Musically? Anything that’s got a lil bit of something raw and a little bit of life to it, stick a little of the Devil there too and you got yourself a mix – from Raw Power era Stooges to N.Y Dolls to Batmobile to Standells  hell… let’s throw some Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson in there for good measure too.

Personally? A lil carpet burn and heat rash and some rubber marks and whiplash and I reckons I just might be entertained

Nottingham is your home, how do you find it for you as an artist and band for opportunities and for finding fans for your insatiable wickedness?

Y’know it’s pretty good. It’s where we started playing and started getting support. And there are always plenty of people to satisfy my appetites. Though I might have to leave when the spate of quiffed up moonchild newborns all come tumblin’ out. Oops.

The band line-up has an uncanny look and feel of The Cramps, intentional or sheer fortune?

Now that can’t ever be a bad thing cannit? I mighta got some fashion tips from a few folk that I like and the Cramps might have been one of them but as for the rest of the ‘Tones – they’re the ones who make the music and they aint never come across the Cramps before getting told they play like them.

You have just had a launch show for new release RockinRollin VampireMan, was it as much of a riot and flesh fest as certain pictures portray?

Awww. Yes. Yes it was. It was every kinda fuckphonic filth that you mighta guessed it would be. Having four sets of jigglies spelling ‘We heart Dick!’ is something I won’t forget. Some people wanna see their name in lights? Seein’ mine on ladylumps will satisfy me fine.

The three track release is a dark beast of gratuitous pleasure, are the songs ones that have riled up audiences at live shows for a while or brand new for the single?

Hmmmm, a lil mix of both. ‘RockinRollin’ VampireMan’ is a pretty old one. ‘StickyPants Trance’, that just had to go on, hell when we first played that song some folk got so wet you coulda drowned toddlers in their pantyhose. ‘Lilly & the Killers’, well that was just a nice lil closer. None were written specifically for it but we try to record just as often as we can so there’s never much delay.

Though your songs often have a horror/movie fuelled theme one gets the sense from the passion you deliver them even in your own inimitable way that there are personal inspirations at play too?

Well I do like to bite.

RockinRollin VampireMan is an infectious almost anthem track, maybe a personal declaration too?

Well with that being the very first song on the very first single then I reckoned I better had set myself up. Aint nutin like an honest introduction.

The tracks sound actually reminds of the first split release the Meteors were involved with but also in a way of very early The Fall. Are these bands that you have a liking for?

Now the Fall I like – but… Really? The Fall? I might have to dig the old stuff out and compare.

Included on the single is the track Sticky Pants Trance. We have all had some of that in our lives but what inspired the song itself?

Once I got stuck in a crater of a hiphole and then I got thinkin’ how I got there. Now it can’t all be my fault that chicklets get transfixed in my stickypants trance can it? Guess it’s a curse I have to bare.

The CD comes with a great comic book sleeve, the artwork is excellent, who drew and wrote that?

You can find here in the video for StickyPants Trance, she’s the nurse that gets carted away at the end. She’s called Nurse Catatonic.

Once the dust for the single has settled what comes next and how long before the next release?

Gigs, leather, latex, shows, caber tossing, goat blowing, olive oil, friction burns, corsets, tattoos, tattoos of corsets, pictures of tattoos of corsets, burlesque queens and the odd dream of Dana Scully. Got a bunji clunge jump all lined up too – that’s a bunji jump and target practice all rolled up in one. Next release? Shall we say end of the year? Thinkin’ it might be a new song we’ve written that we so sensitively called ‘Get Fucked Up Good’. It’s a sweet little ditty ‘bout the pitfalls of lovin.

Many bands now seem to be disregarding releasing an album to instead bring a steadier stream of singles or EPs, is that something you may consider?

I think that might be the case. Every time we get a set of dynamite songs we’re gonna get them down and get ‘em out to the masses. If there’s demand for an album then hells yes we’ll do one. Plus this way our comic strip will get longer with every release.

With your diverse sound which fights being tagged how easy is it to find bills and bands to fit easy with your distinct show?

It’s working pretty well, ‘cus we got bits of rockabilly, bits of punk, bits of garage, psychobilly, gothabilly we get tied into a load of different scenes. I reckon people don’t just wanna see one thing at a gig so having a mix up does us some favours.

Is it harder to find gigs further afield than Nottingham with venues that do not know the band or is it the opposite and places you have spoilt that are then more resistant haha?

Can’t say we ever had much problem getting out and about – the more places and people we sweat on the better. I’m a sociable lil critter so I like t’ hound promoters and venues wherever I can. I’d say we play a different city every two weeks at the moment and I reckon I wanna do more. And I aint never trashed a stage or venue too bad to not get an invite to go back.

I can imagine many bands would stay away from sharing stages with you for fear of being blown away from your performances.

Well maybe, guess folks in the audience can only get so wet.

What have been the best gigs you have had to date and most memorable?

The single launch was something unforgettable and every time we play at 12Bar in Soho it’s like the best sticky hotbox homecoming you could ever imagine. Got a nice big break at Rescue Rooms, Nottingham about a year back too.

And the best forgotten?

Already forgotten.

It is hard to believe your gigs are just another show for people, you make sure one way or another they are unforgettable one imagines?

Well now that’s just me all over– unforgettable. And without any show then you may as well be sat at home with a record in your ears. You want something to get caught up in right?

Are there any boundaries or limits that have not been or you will not push in your shows?

Hmmmmmm… I mighta knocked my tooth out  twice on a mike, split my lip so bad that I went to a vets right after the gig (I didn’t wanna wait all night at A&E). Think I broke a rib somehow too but I’d never do nuthin to hurt myself on purpose.

Isolated Atoms – Illuminate

The new EP from UK rock band Isolated Atoms treats the ear to music which is distinctive yet also a list of influences which seem to ooze from every track. Illuminate is a creative release offering as many engaging new flavours as it does nostalgic spices seeded in the sound of the eighties. This results in an EP which feels like an old acquaintance resurrected in a new body and fuelled by fresh energy. With the band name partly inspired by the song of the same name from the legendary Joy Division you immediately get some idea of the sounds breathing within the impressive tracks.

The band was formed in 2008 in the Black Country, West Midlands, and took no time in coming to the close attention of more and more people, their debut single of the following year Tell Me What I Want, grabbing radio play and finding subsequently itself and the band under the enthusiastic notice of the likes of Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) and Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order). The new release looks set to easily expand on this existing awareness in the UK to take the band further on from a growing response which has seen them finding recognition in the US with shows at various venues including the legendary Whiskey a Go-Go.

Isolated Atoms and Illuminate brings electro rock if one is to simplify it to the ear but their unique version comes with a steel and distinctly dark feel which has something for everyone from electro pop enthusiasts to goth and post punk fans. They are hard to pin down as their songs inspire thoughts and emotions from bands such as obviously Joy Division and New Order to Leisure Process and Sisters Of Mercy as well as current bands like Editors and Dommin. The songs are a heady fusion of sounds led by the unique expressive voice of Grant Leon Ashman, his delivery and style laced with touches of Andre Eldritch and Ian Astbury to his own distinctive and emotive tones.

Opener Gun In My Hand has a kind of vaunt to its intent, a surety that connects within moments. The song is openly infectious, its hold strengthening as the sounds wrap themselves firmly around the senses. With a Sisters of Mercy bassline resonating insistently and guitars fired in the forge of the Cult the song stomps eagerly; it is an addiction in the making ensured by melodies and essences bringing memories of the likes of The March Violets.

A strong start is soon pursued to equal effect by the mesmeric melodies and caress of Pray For Me Now. Like an enthused young brother the song builds on the strength of Gun In My Hand with a blues impassioned declaration from Ashman upon a swell of graceful synth delight. Caressing the senses as effectively as the first track pumped them up, the song shows the depth and diversity to the band within their enterprising sound. The next song Perception continues the mood and expansive sweep with synths that soar and lap around the burning passion of lyrics, the stirring vocals, and pulsating basslines.

Final song is a remix of a previous single Play, a song which feels very similar initially to the previous song. One its eighties electronica sounds swarm all over the ear though we are lifted into another soundscape of the Isolated Atoms musical world. This song offers the strongest nostalgic energy of the release, the song reminding of bands like The The and Positive Noise, though the dark essences of the song always keeps it wholly original.

      Illuminate is a strange release that is original and very familiar at the same time even if you have never heard the music of Isolated Atoms before. Importantly though it is a mesmeric and thoroughly pleasing release that makes one eager for more from the band and soon.

In Place Of Hope – Self Titled EP

If of a sensitive disposition than stay clear of the new self titled EP from hardcore/metalcore band In Place Of Hope. Though it does not neglect the melodic and cleaner side of metal it first with no compulsion to be nice obliterates defences and stretches the ear to extremes. It does at times with an out stretched hand offer to pick one up again but only to allow it to knock ten bells out of its victim all over again. The release is a formidable trio of songs which whilst not turning over new rocks for the genre kicks them around the place with impressive skill.

Formed in 2010 down  in Southampton, the quartet of Matt Dennison (Vocals), Russ Barnes (Lead Guitar), Rob Arthur (Vocals/Guitar), Dave Sands (Bass), and Mike Hill (Drums) took an inspiration influenced by the likes of Parkway Drive, Bring Me the Horizon Alexisonfire, and Killswitch Engage and twisted it into their own aggressive and impressive sound. 2011 saw the band matching and upstaging the likes of Evita, Giants, Odessa, Despite My Deepest Fear, and Brotherhood of the Lake in gigs across the South of England, all the while accumulating strong respect and notice further afield. With the release of their EP it is hard to imagine they will not be taking larger and swifter steps up the metal ladder as more fall beneath its thunderous might.

Obviously not a band with an ounce of mercy or desire to take it easy on people within them, In Place of Hope attacks the senses like a tornado from the off with the brilliant Lifelines. The song instantly became a favourite for song of the year with the barrage of violent drums and monstrous riffs that leaves one shell shocked. Many songs do this but once the sinister infectious groove begins to wind itself around the heart, the satanic growls spray venom with every syllable and the clean vocals swarm eagerly all over the debris, the song rises to majestic and impervious to complaint. The drums stomp all over the senses with obvious delight whilst the guitars play with the damaged goods left and it is so satisfying. The song has everything to make it a permanent fixture in all metal hard hearts and sets the band alone ahead of the plethora of emerging metalcore bands.

After such an impressive start there had to be a drop in levels or even intensity. Maybe there is but it is hardly note worthy, the remaining explosions of Bridges and Dark Roads & White Knuckles more than capable of holding their own. The first opens with just clean vocals and guitar to bring a frown but within a few breaths the song erupts into more splintered intense riffs and captivating melodies. The mix of growls and clean vocals favour the latter more in contrast to the opener but the band brings them both together in a defined and seamless mix which many bands struggle to understand or do. The song as does the latter of the two shows the expansive sound and ability within the songwriting and vision of the band and though no song offers anything brand new to leave one awe struck you know it will come, that In Place Of Hope have all the armoury and creativity.

As Bridges closes with sparkling melodic guitars winding down, Dark Roads & White Knuckles muscles its way in with stirring riffs and commanding rhythms. The show is less brutal than the opener despite the bitterly harsh growls, well that is until the band cannot hold back any longer and unleash a thunderous assault bombarding the ear with heavy artillery that breaks knees ability to stand. Once out of their system the band resumes the original intent the song started with, again it is seamless and the switching back and forth exhilarating.

      Lifelines may lead the way and set the pace on the EP but overall it is an impressively solid and deeply satisfying release that ensures In Place of Hope have the attention of everyone.

Dirty Crawlers – Southern Headlines

UK rock band Dirty Crawlers has always had a confidence and swagger about them and their sound which made the band mischievously engaging and irrepressible. Their soiled and enthused rhythm and blues flavoured rock songs y found their way to the heart with an honesty and eagerness which was refreshing and impossible not to be drawn into. Now to what will be a loud chorus of excited voices from their ever increasing following is unleashed their debut album Southern Headlines. With a revamp of favourites and a collection of startlingly pleasing new tunes the album finally announces   Dirty Crawlers upon a bigger platform and already they appear to own it.

Made up of vocalist and guitarist Luke Wallin, bassist Nick Feltham, drummer Darren Parsons, and lead guitarist Kris Hutton, Dirty Crawlers simply rock the speakers with their new release. Twelve songs which play like old boozy friends but brought forth with energy and vibrancy that makes everything sound like virgin sounds. Whilst there was definite promise and pleasure in the previous singles which led to impatient anticipation for more, Southern Headlines exceeds expectations which were already high. The quartet from Staines has simply given a feast of straight forward uncluttered rock ‘n’ roll for the ear to devour and body to let loose to.

The album opens with Gonna Be Right and immediately sets out their stall. The song grips the ear taking it into realms of rock that never fail to light up the energy and need to participate. The flavours the band offer in their music is varied influence wise and the opener wants to reveal them all. With essences of the likes of Small Faces and The Who alongside the eagerness of the likes of Purple Hearts and The Creation the band sets the album off to a fine start.

A firm start is soon eclipsed by the following Second Touch, a song that takes one by the scruff of the neck with hypnotic rhythms, expressive vocals, and guitars as caustic as they are dripping filth caked melodies. It is gritty and totally unfussed about brushing off the dirt to be the clean boy your mother would love. The song does what all good rock songs should do, party in the ear and leave one breathless.

As mentioned a few tracks have been given an updating which actually kind of leaves one slightly undecided about them as in the case of the brilliant song Victim Of Love. With a 2011 remix the song is just as stunning and infectious as ever, inviting and probably regretting the need for some listeners to join is at the top of their voices, sorry boys. The indecision comes in the fact that this and others also revamped have a cleaner and more incisive mix which really does do them justice and elevates them onto another platform, but there is still a small feeling of loss for the rawer grungier sound. Nothing can deny the power and quality of the song and though and it is another excellent track to add to the growing list on the album.

The reworked These Few Nights, the insatiable bluesy Black & White (like Casablanca), and Spaces a song dripping emotive vocals and melodies continue the fine sounds and well crafted songs. Dirty Crawlers songs are quite deceptive, on the surface they just seem like simple wholehearted slices of rock but there is a depth and skill to them which reveal s the thought and heart that goes into the music. The Top Cat remix of Bottleneck is a perfect example; it taunts and plays with the ear like a kid with a new toy, swinging chords and melodies before the senses whilst stomping on them with robust rhythms. Initially it looks easy and without effort but the song is concisely created to engage, mesmerise and then command which it does with consummate ease.

Completed by songs like southern twanged Nine Day Wonder, a great new version of another crowd favourite Looks Like Love, and the heartfelt When She’s Gone, the album is a real joy. It does not venture into directions that break down the walls of invention but chooses to stay in pasture which ignite and deeply satisfy the heart. Dirty Crawlers have kept us waiting for this but time dissipates into a distant memory when it sounds this good.

Axis Mundi -Chapel Perilous

Axis Mundi is a band which has you smirking, open mouthed, scratching your head, and wondering what just hit you. Most of all the quartet from Hinckley, UK have you rocking like a bird on an electrified fence, vibrating, busting moves, and a shell shocked wreck by the end of the experience. Becoming well renowned for their live shows their debut album Chapel Perilous is the impressive result of the transfer of their live energy and mischief to the studio. The album romps all over the senses and pumps up the ear with eight vibrant violations headed up by an opening Disclaimer to cover their wicked little hearts.

Formed in late 2008 Axis Mundi have excited, enthralled, and surprised every step of the way. The year after starting, the band was rated as one of the top upcoming bands in the UK from a group of over 12,000 other strong candidates and they left venues like Indigo2 in London a hollow reflection of themselves with their riotous shows as their stock grew. 2010 saw them working closely with best-selling science author and New Scientist writer Michael Brooks during his election campaign against Hinckley and Bosworth MP David Tredinnick, the politics of the band striking a stance as strong as their irrepressible sounds, and there was the little matter of a 4 track EP Find the Others making waves too. Since its release in the twilight weeks of last year Chapel Perilous has thrust the band into brighter headlights as more fall under its stomping presence and unpredictable manipulations.

The album ‘a 9 track story of a series of real life legal and illegal experiments conducted into consciousness and perception’ hits the senses with unbridled mischief from the off, the Axis Mundi freakish blend of unrelenting acid house build ups and ear slamming rock riffs and vocals clashing in an irresistible cacophony of sonic blaze. Classed as psychedelic raverock the band tease and mislead the senses whilst mistreating and molesting them at the same time. They come at you from every direction with the misdirection of maniacal hysterical magicians, the ensuing maelstrom of sound across the album an unsettling pleasure and sheer fun. Imagine a cauldron of Pop Will Eat Itself, Manic Street Preachers, and Rage Against The Machine flushed through a vat of The Browning and infected with a healthy dose of acid house mayhem and you have Axis Mundi.

Goat Boy opens up the chaos, its provocative riffs stroking the ear roughly as guitarist/vocalist Gary Frewin sets the stage for the rampage ahead. His voice plays like a cross between James Dean Bradfield and Zack de la Rocha and adds a perfect edge to the all enveloping sounds surrounding him. As bassist James Midgley thumps in pulse energising riffs the synths swarm and slap with a loving hand. The song is infectious and heart pumping stuff closely matched by the following eager to engage Rich And Famous. With scrambling riffs and dazzling bubbling waves of synth lapping the ear the song reaches deep with a less frenetic intrusion than its predecessor.

Chapel Perilous has a strength across its length which many bands would yearn for but with two tracks the band out shine even themselves. First there is the romping stomp of Tales from the Galapagos, an early Faith No More flavoured feast of energy and siren spawn sounds. It sways and teases with a cocksure confidence that you cannot resist its charms as it investigates and ventures up and down varied rock and electro avenues. Alongside the opener it is the best song on the album, one of a trio as the pair are joined by Eden Alive! in jostling and flaring up the heart. With soft expressive vocals and thought invoking guitar and synth melodies the song immediately captivates, then when it explodes into full on electro bedlam with a chest beating fist pumping energised aggression it spawns sonic rapture. Like a mini rock opera the song encapsulates everything you need to know about Axis Mundi and their fine imagination and ingenuity.

With further great songs like The Limitations Of Thinking Things Are Real with a stroll and attitude as mischievous as a gang of drunk school boys, the metal fuelled The Fool, and the schizophrenic Blue Cunt, Axis Mundi have produced an album that attacks and lights up every pore with fast flowing and mesmeric invention. First time you listen you grin, the second you find the glories within, and the third you are infected for life, enjoy!
