Mind Museum: Lie To Me

If you have already been impressed by UK alternative rock band Mind Museum and their previous single Rat Race and the following The Power Of Three EP of last year, than new single Lie To Me is going to blow you away. If the Bristol trio are still new to you than the single simply is the perfect way to introduce yourselves to one of the best emerging bands in British rock over the past couple of years.

Comprising of Justin E Percival (vocals/bass), Will Slater (guitar) and Chas Bacon (drums), Mind Museum has been on a steady and determined rise since its formation in 2010. They have impressively shared stages with the likes of Young Guns, Twin Atlantic, The King Blues and The Royal Republic to go alongside their well received and acclaimed releases, as well as picking up strong airplay from the likes of Total Rock, BBC Introducing, and The Reputation Radio Show and having their videos hitting great viewing figures and exposure through the likes of Kerrang TV.

Lie To Me is another step forward for the band in sound, songwriting, and stature as there have not been others to unleashing a song as potent and emotively dramatic over recent months to rival Mind Museum. Within a couple of notes the song grips tight and whispers with emotion before raging with passion though, they master the aggression and intensity and turn it into a potent energy rather than an angry assault, the impressive trade mark of the band. The guitar invention of Slater is mesmeric within the song, his incendiary play a smouldering burn on the senses whilst the vocals of Percival are the most emotive and deeply reaching to date to bring the reflective heart of the song to passionate life. His pulsating basslines are as rich as ever alongside the impressive rhythms of Bacon, and taking the song as a whole it has to be said the band has found their own unique breath to leave their rivals behind.

A band which layers their songs with passion and shadows as powerfully as they do sounds and imagination, Mind Museum have evolved into the great band they always promised, the hard work starts here as they build even greater heights for themselves.

Miniature Dinosaurs – Lemonade

Last year Scottish band Miniature Dinosaurs opened up a flood of attention their way with the mischievous and wholly infectious single Alligator. The track was strongly impressive and put all on alert for what came next from the band. August 13^th sees new single Lemonade let loose to show that the success and quality of its predecessors was no flash In the pan and that the quartet from Stirling is one of the brightest sparks to have recently emerged within UK indie music.

The new track is taken from the upcoming Turn It On EP, which comes out in October alongside a second single from the release. Whereas Alligator was a greedy bundle of energy with a wicked grin upon its face, Lemonade finds the band exploring a more expressive and seductive sound though the track is no less infectious and short of a tongue in cheek breath. Their first release since signing with Integrity Records, who brought the likes of Reuben and Million Dead to the nation, it is another impressive step in the constant rise Miniature Dinosaurs has been on since their beginning. The band at their start found themselves receiving radio play months before their first ever gig and on stage has thrilled alongside the likes of Fenech-Soler, Johnny Foreigner, Twin Atlantic and Young the Giant. Singles through Electric Honey and Saraseto Records has only added fuel to their growth and as one listens to Lemonade and with the upcoming EP, it feels that the time of Miniature Dinosaurs is on the very near horizon.

The single instantly bursts in to life with a flurry of vibrant jangly guitars and firm rhythms before settling down to begin its tale of young romantic angst. The bass of Alban Dickson strolls with a moodiness adding depth to the elevated guitar play and the whispered tones of the synths from Craig Ferrie. Within the warm sounds the vocals of guitarist Barry Maclean are an expressive delight which explore each note and word he delivers with a compulsive emotive lilt. The track then brings in bursts of energetic passion where the beats of Sam Waller ensure a fuller attention from the ear so the melodic enterprise and discordant tinged surface of the guitars can play with relish. It is a glorious blend which along its length brings thoughts of bands like Associates, Orange Juice, Pulp, and Josef K to the unique sound the band conjures with ease.

Lemonade is outstanding and incites an even more elevated affection for the contagious sounds of Miniature Dinosaurs. The Turn It On EP cannot come soon enough and there is no doubt the band will become a constant on radio shows and channels with their sounds and accompanying videos of this and the forthcoming releases.

Late Night Fiction: Polar

Polar the new EP from UK melodic post hardcore band Late Night Fiction is one of those slow burners which needs a little extra time to unveil and expose its excellence. From receiving an initial appreciative nod without truly understanding its intent the release evolves into a stirring and perpetually intriguing gem. To be honest it never quite manages to ignite any ferocious or lingering fires within but is without doubt one of the more interesting and appetising releases of the genre and UK rock in general this year.

Late Night Fiction formed in 2007 as an acoustic duo of vocalist guitarist Phill Morris and guitarist James Thompson. Their need and desire for a heavier sound led to the addition in 2009 of bassist Reece Britton and ex-Alison Angus drummer Josh Meredith. Drawing on influences like Biffy Clyro, Yourcodenameis:milo, Hell is for Heroes and Brand New, the Hull based quartet released their debut EP Hands & Numbers the same year to strong responses. Shows with the likes of Grammatics and the Xcerts followed as well as sessions for BBC Introducing and their first single Horsefight. Since then the band has gone from strength to strength with this year alone already seeing the band playing alongside Twin Atlantic, , Dinosaur Pile Up, Flood of Red, run, WALK!, and Sucioperro. It has also seen Nat Lawson taking over with the sticks though Meredith is the man building the impressive song frameworks on the EP.

Released on their own Grey Man Records, Polar does not take too long into first song Black Watch to show that beneath the aggressive and high charged melodic scorching the band is not interested in merely making tidy, unassuming, and predictable music. This ensures songs which are at times volatile and insistently dynamic but also adventurous and continually surprising. The opener alone marks the songwriting as thoughtful yet unafraid to venture beyond its expected borders, something refreshing certainly in a genre which seemingly is veering towards wearing predictability as a uniform. The song ruptures the air with its first notes through striking and hungry guitars alongside openly earnest clean and shouting vocals. As the track surges with twisting switches from thrashing almost venomous intent to restrained melodic elegance which has its seeds in the acoustic intricacies from the roots of the band, it is a refreshing journey which leaps and gently strolls alternatively and persistently across the senses. It does not  get the blood surging through veins and the heart running fast but it certainly has one engrossed and grinning with delight.

The outstanding Exits, Pursued By A Bear steps into view next upon delicious atmospheric guitar weaves, their gait warming the air even with the exposure of coarse vocal grimaces within the otherwise smooth emotive delivery. As the song spreads its arms the bass of Britton virtually swaggers within the brewing ambience generated whilst Meredith leaves one on the verge of punch drunk with his powerful jabbing beats. Another exercise in musical adventure punctuated with explosions of incendiary energy and burning melodic intrusions, the song is a masterful piece leaving one deeply satisfied and with a desperate need to dive right back in to its heart to discover more of its textures and veiled invention.

The excellent and expressive instrumental Smashy “Smashy Beast” Beast is just the band laying out their musical ability and vision to wonderful effect, the dramatic and highly tensioned heart of the song much more than a mere interlude between the other tracks.

     Dialetics and Relax Please complete the line-up of songs to equal and impressive success. The first is more restrained than the other tracks but has a rawness to rile up emotions just as effectively adding further variation and imagination to the songwriting whilst the latter is a seven minute encapsulation of what the band is about, its presence an inciteful and compulsive exploration of their limits. Though arguably the least accessible song it has the most depth and imaginative canvas for thoughts and emotions to play with on the EP. It also has a melodic hook at times which shouts out Altered Images, but  do not let that put you off.

Polar is an exceptional release which just requires some fuller attention before it truly shows its qualities. The rewards though are very satisfying and with the album Ethics scheduled for late 2012, Late Night Fiction is a band to watch very carefully.
