Mind Set A Threat – Self Titled EP

Like musical whiplash the self titled EP from Edinburgh band Mind Set A Threat strikes, from the first note a niggle starts and then with full force the sounds slam home and the power of the quintet over powers and consumes. Mind Set A Threat is a metal band with screamo tendencies but there is more to their music then that simple tag, they bring urgency to their sound that gives them a post hardcore edge too and more.

The three song EP shows a progression by the band from their earlier release The Losing Game, bringing a more assured and confident sound whilst still retaining their core energy and feel  that  already has brought them some eager attention. Each track is laden with pulse racing riffs, blood boiling intensity, and outright passion in their energy and for their own music.

The Odyssey’ starts off the release, a powerhouse of a track where vocalist Dave unleashes with a might equal to the imposing heavy attack his growling screams; with venom dripping from his lips he matches the striking rhythms and preying riffs perfectly. Countering and complimenting this angry attack are the excellent and well delivered smooth vocals of Adam Gardner; his voice and the skilful melodic play he brings with fellow guitarist Pabz make a great contrast and addition within the aggression, creating a track that is rounded and full.

The second track and their new video is ‘Stories’ and the best song on the EP. Though the trio of tracks hold a consistency of quality that is impressive it just edges the others in creativity. Again the blend of clean and harsh vocals is a good mix, neither over powering nor detracting from the other in power or presence.  The track has an Alexisonfire feel which with the bands open love of said band is no real surprise, but Mind Set A Threat use it as a mere influence rather than a template and create a song that is vibrant and stirring.

Final track is ‘All The Hour That God Sends’ and it brings a darker wave of intensity, the bass and drums of M.C. and Gary A respectively scarring with their attack. It also shows the stronger melodic side to the band and their ability to combine both elements with perfect balance into songs that are impressive and rewarding to the listener

The song rounds off a very satisfying EP that not only shows a band in control and creative at this moment in time but suggests great promise for major things in the years ahead if not sooner for   Mind Set A Threat.
